  • Pérez Art Museum Miami Presents Calida Rawles: Away with the Tides

Calida Rawles, "Away With The Tides" (2024). Acrylic on canvas, 120 x 96 inches. Courtesy the artist and Lehmann Maupin, New York, Seoul, and London. Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is showcasing Calida Rawles: Away with the Tides, an exhibition featuring all-new, site-specific works alongside a novel large-scale video installation. Marking Rawles’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States, Away with the Tides reflects aspects of Miami’s diverse communities, natural environments, and rich history. Internationally recognized for her intricate and delicate acrylic on canvas paintings, Rawles blends hyperrealism with poetic abstraction and situates her subjects in dynamic, undulating spaces. Her recent work utilizes water as a vital, organic, and multifaceted element—as well as a historically charged space that concomitantly represents racial exclusion and individual healing. “Away with the Tides seeks to illuminate and celebrate Miami’s history, resilience, and beauty, in the hands of a distinct talent in contemporary painting,” said PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans. “Supporting and collaborating with the local communities of Miami and South Florida is one of PAMM’s core values and central facets of its mission. I want to thank Calida for sharing her work, passion, and restless desire to experiment and evolve with PAMM and with our audiences.” Away with the Tides bridges the past and present, depicting elements of Miami’s history through the eyes of its residents. Delving into the experience of Black people in America, Rawles partnered with members of the historically Black community of Overtown in Miami. Akin to Tremé in New Orleans, the Historic West End in Charlotte, and countless other neighborhoods in the United States, Overtown transformed from a thriving cultural and commercial hub for Black people in the 1930s to a town subjected to gentrification, systemic racism, and mass displacement beginning in the 1950s and 60s. “It is extremely exciting to work with Rawles on her first museum solo presentation. While Rawles’s signature style will be present, she is also pushing her boundaries and working in natural waters for the first time, resulting in paintings with a new color composition and feel,” said PAMM Associate Curator Maritza M. Lacayo. “Miami is a complicated and difficult place to understand. I hope this exhibition gives others the courage to dive into their city or town’s history, no matter how dark or difficult.” Rawles’s process began with a series of preliminary photoshoots in Virginia Key Beach and the public pool at Theodore Gibson Park in Overtown, which then informed the subject matter for the lifelike paintings on view. Ranging from a 10-month-old baby to senior citizens, the portraits provide representation for those who call Overtown home while capturing the generational shift the community has undergone and giving shape to an American experience that is often overlooked. With residents as the subjects of her paintings, it became evident that the exhibition would be a transformative experience—for some, it would also be their first time at a museum, emphasizing the silos Miami still struggles to navigate despite geographical proximity. Furthermore, by photographing Black individuals in the ocean, Rawles interrogates the Atlantic Ocean's history as the site of the supremely exploitative Transatlantic Slave Trade. As a result, the finished work critically engages with Miami’s water-entwined climate, while connecting to larger histories of beauty, oppression, and persistence in contemporary American life. “I am so inspired by the Overtown community’s resilience and strength. Through my work, I hope to shine a new light on the beauty and untold stories of its residents. I’m immensely grateful to Franklin Sirmans and Maritza M. Lacayo for supporting my vision and giving me the opportunity to engage so meaningfully with this incredible community,” said Calida Rawles. Away with the Tides is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue, the most in-depth volume to date on Calida Rawles’s art and practice, featuring collaborators Regina R. Robertson, Christine Y. Kim, and Enuma Okoro. Away with the Tides is organized by Maritza M. Lacayo, Associate Curator, with the support of Fabiana Sotillo, Curatorial Assistant. MORE ON CALIDA RAWLES Rawles received a B.A. from Spelman College, Atlanta, GA (1998) and an M.A. from New York University, New York, NY (2000). Solo exhibitions of her work have been organized at Lehmann Maupin, New York, NY (2021); Various Small Fires, Los Angeles, CA (2020); and Standard Vision, Los Angeles, CA (2020). • Tryout for the Maccabiah Games and Celebrate Jewish Heritage Month with Scott Kalb

May is Jewish American Heritage Month and Scott Kalb, who has been involved with tennis and the Maccabiah Games for a great portion of his life, is proud of his Jewish heritage and is encouraging others to try out for the games! Scott has been playing tennis his entire life, with one of his early memories coming in the New York City Public School Athletic League, where he was a champion at age 13. He played through college and became a champ in the Ohio Athletic Conference singles champion. Scott is also a Maccabiah Games veteran, competing for over 16 years, and as Co-Captain of the USA Masters and Grand Master’s Tennis Team, he wants to see others get involved this year. Often referred to as the “Jewish Olympics,” the Maccabiah Games are the world’s third-largest international sporting event and has featured participants from over 100 countries competing in a wide range of sports. The 2025 Maccabiah Games are just over a year away, taking place in Israel, and brings together Jewish athletes from around the globe for a prestigious sporting event. “I tried out for the USA Masters tennis team for the 2009 Maccabiah in Israel and qualified for the team, but I took a job overseas in South Korea and moved away for a few years with my family and was unable to join the Games,” Scott recalled. “Four years later, we moved back. I tried out again, made it, and played in the 2013 Maccabiah Games winning a gold medal in singles.” Maccabiah’s mission to build Jewish pride through sports and promote support for Israel, Zionism and Jewish continuity through athletic, educational, and cultural experiences for participants of all ages, is well represented in the athletes and competition. “Marching into that stadium behind the US flag in the opening ceremonies is a thrill like no other. I love meeting new people and getting together with old friends,” he said. “I have been competing in the Maccabiah Games for over ten years and it is like an extended family. We all look forward to seeing each other and to playing together.” The competition is set to take place July 8 through July 22, 2025, but there is a golden opportunity for Jewish Tennis athletes, that’s right around the corner. Maccabi USA is hosting tryouts for the Masters Tennis Team, and you can try to make the team and play in the games! Tryouts are taking place October 6 through October 8 at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens. Maccabi USA is looking for players to compete in the 35 & Over age group all the way up to 80 & Over, with 5-year increments. You must be a 3.5 & above rated player to tryout. “I have now played for the USA in five Maccabiah Games, three Maccabiah in Israel (2013, 2017, 2022), one European Games (Budapest 2019), and one Pan American Games (2023 in Argentina),” he said. “I have won eight medals; two golds and a silver in Singles, and three golds and two bronze medals in Men’s Doubles.” “Meeting Jewish athletes from around the world, forming friendships for life, you can’t beat it,” Scott said. “If we can play together, and compete in sports together, we can learn to live in harmony and respect, and communicate openly with each other.” For more information on trying out for a tennis team, contact Shane Carr or visit maccabiusa.com. • The 95th Women’s Golf Amateur Championship Field

Welcome to the excitement of this year's Women’s Amateur Championship, hosted at The Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Florida. With eighty-four talented players teeing off, the stage is set for four intense days of golf, where players will navigate 36 holes of individual gross stroke play into match play rounds. Once match play begins, it's single elimination, adding an extra layer of intensity as we inch closer to crowning our 95th Women’s Amateur Champion. But that's not all; this year's lineup is brimming with talent. As we journey to Jupiter, Florida, female golfers from the Sunshine State are all vying to etch their names onto the esteemed roster of elite champions. Be sure to keep a close watch on our highlighted field players as they strive to make their mark. Chloe Kovelesky | Boca Raton, Fla. – Defending Champion Chloe Kovelesky was just 16 years old when she became the youngest player to win the Women’s Amateur Championship last year. Not only was she the youngest, but she was just the second junior golfer to win the Women’s Amateur in the championship’s 94-year history, after 17-year-old Bailey Shoemaker won in 2022. Her success didn’t stop there. Kovelesky, a Boca Raton native, was also named last year’s Player of the Year. She then defended the honor and slid into 2024 being crowned champion of this year’s FJT Indian Spring Open (16-18), and FJT Golf Road Junior Major (16-18) where she posted rounds of 69-68 for a total of 137. Maisie Filler | Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Maisie Filler, a senior at the University of Florida, epitomizes the fusion of hard work and talent. Her skill was evident when she clinched the No. 1 spot in the official NCAA Rankings earlier this year at the Moon Golf Invitational in February. Additionally, in January, Filler defeated Scarlett Schremmer, the No. 1 ranked junior in Alabama, by a margin of 4 & 3 to claim the 91st Jones/Doherty Women’s Amateur at Coral Ridge Country Club in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Most recently, Filler competed in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur where she secured a top-10 finish. She also competed in the U.S. Women’s Open after earning her Golden Ticket through a qualifier at the Club at Admirals Cove. Among her notable achievements in FSGA competitions is a runner-up finish at the 2022 Women’s Amateur Championship. Filler has showcased her skills consistently throughout her junior career on the Florida Junior Tour, securing a top-10 placement at the Girls’ Junior event and making appearances at both the U.S. Women’s Amateur and the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship. Jordan Fischer | Cape Coral, Fla. Another notable player to keep an eye out for is Jordan Fischer. Fischer has been making waves on the fairways since she was the FJT (13-15) Points Champion in 2020. She would go on to become the Girls' Junior (13-15) Champion, the Pam McCloskey-Brosnihan Open Champion, and the winner of the Florida Girls State championships, all in 2021. Most recently, she was crowned champion of the 2023 Florida Women's Open at Grand Harbor Golf & Beach Club in Vero Beach, FL, posting a score of 70-67-69 for a total of 206 and becoming the first amateur to win the Championship Division. Fischer now attends LSU where she played in four team tournaments and one individual event for the Tigers as a freshman. Alexandra Gazzoli | Palm Coast, Fla. Despite being only 18 years old, Alexandra Gazzoli has already amassed an impressive list of accomplishments. At the age of 12, she secured a spot in the Drive, Chip, and Putt National Finals at Augusta National—an extraordinary feat for any young golfer. Throughout her high school years, Gazzoli consistently excelled, finishing within the top four at the Class 2A state championships for four consecutive years and clinching the state championship title as a junior in 2022. Among her notable achievements in FSGA competitions is her victory at the Florida Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship, held at TPC Treviso Bay in Naples, FL. In November of 2023, Gazzoli took her golf career to the next level by committing to Florida State University. Meghan Stasi | Oakland Park, Fla. Meghan Stasi truly defines the term "force to be reckoned with" in every sense. Her illustrious list of achievements speaks volumes. As a 17-time FSGA champion, her dominance extends far beyond Florida's borders. Notably, she has clinched the title of Mid-Amateur Champion in 2019, 2017, 2016, 2014, and 2013, along with Amateur Champion honors in 2012 and 2010, and was named the Curtis Cup Captain in 2024. Her FSGA accomplishments include the 2022 International Four-Ball Champion, and 2021 Summer Mixed Champion, among many others, and most recently she won the International Four-Ball Championship in 2023. Stasi also won Amateur Player of the Year five years in a row from 2010-2014, and three more times in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Stasi also was the youngest individual inducted into the FSGA Hall of Fame in the Association’s history at just forty-two years old. In addition to her achievements with the USGA and the FSGA, Stasi is a seven-time Philadelphia Women’s Amateur champion, winning seven-straight titles. The field is packed with talented competitors and there are two more that deserve to be highlighted. Indeed, the youngest player in the field and the most experienced player in the field both have remarkable golf resumes: Leah Gram and Mary Jane Hiestand. Leah Gram | Jupiter, Fla. Even as the youngest contender in the 95th Women’s Amateur Championship, Leah Gram’s remarkable array of achievements positions her as a strong contender for victory. With three consecutive top-10 finishes in the U.S. Kids World Championship at Pinehurst and a qualification for the Augusta National Drive, Chip, and Putt National Finals, Gram has already made her mark on the golfing world at a young age. Notably, she holds the Florida Junior Tour (Girls 11-12) 36-hole all-time scoring record with an astounding 67-71=138, also tying the 18-hole scoring record and securing victory with the widest margin (11 strokes). Gram's impressive résumé sets her apart as a rising star in the world of golf. Mary Jane Hiestand | Naples, Fla. Hall of Fame Inductee, Mary Jane Hiestand joins the lineup for the 95th Women’s Amateur Championship, and her list of accomplishments goes far and wide. Hiestand has the most Senior Women’s Amateur titles with four past victories. In addition, not only has she earned Women’s Senior Player of the Year honors seven times, as well as Women’s Player of the year one time, she has also competed in over fifty USGA events. However, Hiestand’s achievements extend beyond the realms of the past. In May of this year, she and her partner Susan Temple clinched victory at the Women’s Shoot-Out held at Plantation Golf & Country Club in Venice, FL. Additionally, she triumphed in a one-day event at Estero Country Club carding a 73. Simply a glimpse into a highly competitive field, the victory could belong to any player teeing it up on Thursday. However, come Sunday, a trophy is up for grabs at the Bear’s Club, so stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting 95th Women’s Amateur. By ML Staff. Content/Image courtesy of FSGA

  • Is Petite Modeling the New Body Positive Trend?

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, body positivity has taken significant strides. From plus-size models to those representing disabilities, the runway has become a more inclusive space. However, one group has long been overlooked: petite models. Traditionally, the industry has considered models under 5'9" to be petite, with icons like Kate Moss setting the standard. Yet, a refreshing shift is on the horizon. Miami Swim Week has recently shattered the conventional mold, featuring models of all ages, shapes, and heights, including those standing at just 5'2". This groundbreaking move raises a critical question: is the modeling industry finally ready to embrace the everyday woman? Image by Remington Jay Photography Given that the average height for women in the United States is around 5'3.5", the push for more petite models is both timely and necessary. The representation of petite models on major runways not only mirrors the real-life diversity of women's bodies but also reinforces the message that beauty is not confined to a specific height. The inclusion of petite models signifies a broader embrace of body positivity, extending beyond mere size to encompass height diversity. As the fashion industry continues to evolve, the recognition of petite models may well be the next frontier in promoting a more inclusive and realistic standard of beauty. In our interview with model and actress Jewell Negin Farshad, an Iranian-born model, she shares her life story growing up in Iran and the adversity and challenges she faced as a woman. From being restricted in what she could wear at public beaches to having to cover up in compliance with the rules of the Islamic regime, Farshad’s experiences highlight the severe limitations placed on women. Iran, once a modern country in the 70’s, saw a drastic change after the Islamic regime took power, stripping women of many freedoms. Farshad’s journey and persistence in representing women of Iran shine a light on the suffering and resilience of women under the Islamic regime, particularly within the context of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. Her story underscores the importance of visibility and representation in the modeling industry, not just for petite models but for women worldwide who are fighting for their rights and freedoms. Image by Bullshot Photography As we celebrate these advances, it's worth asking: is petite modeling the new body positive trend? The answer seems to be a resounding yes. By aligning the runway more closely with the reality of the everyday woman and amplifying voices like Farshad’s, the fashion industry is taking significant steps toward a more inclusive and empowering future. • Sleep in Style: How a California King Bed Can Make Your Bedroom Feel More Luxurious

Sleep is an essential part of everyday life and paramount to wellness, but many are always searching for ways to achieve a good night's rest. Many factors impact sleep, and while people focus mostly on curating their environment, Healthline notes that what you sleep on matters too. A good bed can encourage restful sleep and alleviate pain, helping you boost your energy, mood, and health. If you're looking to upgrade your bedroom environment while enhancing your sleep quality, a California King bed can be just what you need. Not only does it provide ample space for you to stretch out and move around while you sleep, but it also elevates your bedroom and turns from a simple sleeping space to a refined room that you'll love to spend time in. Here's how a California King bed can make your bedroom feel more luxurious: Spacious sleep The most obvious advantage of a California King bed is its size. It's larger than a standard king-size bed, offering enough room to sprawl out and sleep comfortably. Having ample space to sleep can feel incredibly luxurious as opposed to scrunching up on a smaller mattress, which is uncomfortable and can affect your sleep quality and overall health. If you're a taller individual or enjoy having a lot of personal space while snoozing with your partner, a California King bed is the way to go. On top of that, the large size can make for a more grand and inviting feel for your bedroom, similar to what you might experience in a high-end hotel suite. The larger size may also encourage you to get rid of clutter that's occupying your floor or wall space, helping you achieve a cleaner look. Making a statement A California King bed commands attention in your bedroom by its presence. Its size allows it to become a focal point in the space and can be a great piece to center other design decisions around for sophistication and cohesion. You can make it easier to unify your decor and design with a California King bed set, which provides a chic bed frame with matching side tables or a dresser, bringing everything together for a more put-together look in your bedroom. The Camila California King bedroom set amps up the luxury with a velvet upholstered bed frame and comes with two nightstands made out of elegant light wood. The Porto storage bedroom set by Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent creates a spacious, serene sanctuary with a bed, matching nightstand, and dresser. With a California King bed set, you can bring the best out of your bedroom. Experimenting with bedding A California King bed allows you to experiment with luxurious bedding options and offers more room to spice up your sleeping space. The finest bed linens not only look luxurious but also feel impeccable. Brands like Amalia Home have long specialized in top-of-the-line bedding options made from fibers like cashmere, mulberry silk, Supima cotton, and linen. Their century-old expertise can ensure your California King sleeping experience feels straight out of a high-end hotel. Soft duvets and comforters not only provide warmth during cooler nights, but can also look visually opulent and inviting. You can explore eye-catching prints or go for soothing hues to give your space a unique ambience. A California King bed also offers plenty of space for layers of plush pillows, creating a cozy atmosphere. If that's not quite your style, you don't have to have layers and layers of bedding. A California King bed can still look and feel sophisticated with minimal bedding, and insights from The Healthy highlight that that can even be better for a good night's sleep! By ML staff.
