  • Events Happening at MOCA North Miami this July

Les Sirènes showcases seven different types of mermaids that inhabit the waters of Haiti, from the beaches to the Basin Bleu waterfalls in Jacmel, each representing a cautionary tale from Haitian folklore. Also open through MOCA’s Welcome to Paradise series is Germane Barnes’s Play House, an installation that activates MOCA’s Paradise Courtyard with a pared-down replica of a shotgun house, paying homage to a definitive style of home frequently seen throughout parts of South Florida. The installation serves as a site of play and exploration, transforming the building into a playscape that balances recreation with learning, where visitors can explore the history of these homes through VR-activated archives. Beyond the newly opened exhibits, much of MOCA’s programming for July takes its inspiration from artist Manuel Mathieu’s presentations—World Discovered Under Other Skies and Dwelling on the Invisible. Farrey's Lighting, Bath, Kitchen and Hardware, a cornerstone of the South Florida community, is proud to announce it was honored by the City of Sunny Isles Beach and Mayor Larisa Svechin with a proclamation declaring June 20 “Farrey’s Day” in commemoration of its 100 years of service to the Miami-Dade community. Siblings Kevin and Paige Farrey were presented with the proclamation during a City Commission Meeting on June 20. Founded by John J. and Emily Farrey in 1924, Farrey’s has been a leading provider of products, technical resources and services for lighting, bath, kitchen and hardware projects. What started as a small general store that only sold hardware, linens, lighting, china, fishing gear and other home products, transformed into two 30,000-square-foot showrooms, in North Miami and Coconut Grove, with more than 25,000 in-stock SKUs – offering the largest product selection and in-stock inventory of its kind in South Florida. Achieving 100 years of continuous operation in today’s business era is an exceptional accomplishment, not only for a small family-run business but also for a business located in a city like Miami, which was incorporated only 128 years ago and is still evolving. Farrey’s has survived the test of time, sharing this privilege with very few other Miami businesses that remain open to this day. Each of the Farrey’s four generations has a played pivotal role in steering the company through continuous expansion, adapting to evolving landscapes, surviving economic downturns, hurricanes, a pandemic and more – all while continuing the family legacy. Today, the fourth generation of the Farrey’s family, led by CEO and Chairman Bud Farrey, has upheld its commitment to being a trusted source of unique, superior offerings and unmatched expert services. South Florida’s rapid residential growth and the influx of new homes, condominiums and mixed-use developments continue to increase lighting, bath, kitchen and decorative hardware needs, which Farrey’s highly trained, multilingual consultants fulfill. The company guides homeowners, designers and trade industry professionals including interior designers, general contractors, builders and others in creating modern yet elegant spaces. The consultants understand clients’ aspirations and can expertly read plans/drawings, conduct onsite visits and provide problem-solving solutions, regardless of style preference and budget. “It’s an incredible honor to be recognized by Mayor Svechin and the City of Sunny Isles Beach for our 100 years of service and our family’s legacy,” said Bud Farrey. “2024 has been an exciting year of celebrating this remarkable milestone and this wouldn’t be possible without the Miami-Dade community, our customers and our long-time vendor partners who have trusted our team for their lighting, bath, kitchen and hardware needs for 100 years.” For more information about Farrey’s Lighting, Bath, Kitchen and Hardware please visit https://farreys.com/. • A Look into the 65th Girls' Junior Golf Championship

As June draws to a close, we not only mark the end of the first month of summer but also anticipate the Girls' Junior Championship. This year, Pelican Golf Club will host the event, showcasing Florida's top junior female golfers competing for the title and a place in FSGA history. Starting June 27th, 90 talented players will tee off, setting the stage for an exciting competition to determine this year's champion. In a new format starting in 2024, all players will compete from the same tee for the Overall Championship, playing 54 holes of stroke play to crown the 95th Girls’ Junior Champion. The tournament will still recognize both a Regular Age Division (16-18) Champion and the Junior Age Division (13-15) Champion. Last year, Yingshai (Lydia) Lin (16-18) and Amelie Zalsman (13-15) claimed titles in their respective divisions. Lin returns to defend her crown, teeing off at 8:54 A.M. in a featured pairing alongside Sophia Dyer, the 2024 Women’s Amateur Champion. Dyer staged a thrilling comeback this year in the final round of match play to clinch the Women’s Amateur Champion title. Other notable players include Mi Li and Katelyn Huber who will hit the fairways on the 10th tee at 8:45 A.M. Mi Li, currently ranked 40th in the World Junior Rankings, is a strong contender for the Championship. Li recently finished tied for 4th at the 2024 Rolex Girls Junior Championship and was victorious at this year’s FJT Eagle Harbor Open (16-18) with rounds of 68-70. Huber is a University of Florida Commit who competed in last year’s U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship. Huber also fired a 64 in the final round of Exempt-Only at Sandridge to capture the victory. Lee was the low amateur in the U.S. Women’s Open Qualifying at Sugar Mill in May, and she won the 2024 FJT PGA National (13-15) 54-Hole Major Major at just 11 years old. Kayla Bryant, the 2023 FJT Tour Championship winner is also in the field. Bryant was the 2024 Junior Orange Bowl Champion, and represented the United States in Japan for the Toyota World Junior Championship. Bryant also captured the victory at the 2022 Junior Match Play Championship. Lastly, keep an eye on Olivia Hassel Bach. She finished T-8 in the 95th Women's Amateur Championship and is a former FJT Champion. Hassel Bach, a member of Pelican Golf Club, will be navigating her home course, adding to the intrigue of her performance. Hassel Bach will hit the opening tee shot on Thursday at 8:00 am off the #1 tee. Pelican Golf Club, with its Donald Ross-inspired design, promises a challenging par 70 layout over 7,000 yards, featuring lush greenery and crushed quartz sand. The stage is set for an exceptional showcase of talent, as the Sunshine State's finest young golfers compete to win this year’s title. • Miami Marlins Welcomes Dontrelle Willis to His 'Second Home'

As the first 8,000 fans to arrive at loanDepot park on Sunday, June 9, were given a Dontrelle Willis bobblehead, Willis also received something special at the ballpark that day. His return to the city and franchise where his career began brought back a rush of emotions and memories. “Being a Marlin means everything to me,” said Willis. “The city of Miami embraced me. This is my second home.” A fan favorite throughout his Marlins tenure, which included being named National League Rookie of the Year and winning the World Series in 2003, Willis received a warm welcome back from Sunday’s crowd. “The excitement and appreciation from the fans mean the world to me,” said Willis, who gladly granted as many autograph and photo requests from fans as he possibly could. Coinciding with his bobblehead giveaway, Willis was there to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. And despite having far more experience than the average person, he faced a dilemma that almost anyone who has thrown a first pitch can relate to. Should he throw it from the pitcher’s mound or stand in front of it? Ultimately, Willis decided to stand in front of it, but not for the same reason as most people who take that route. “I’ve never thrown a pitch [at loanDepot park], so I was kind of nervous to touch the mound,” said Willis. “I didn’t want to mess with the starter’s mound, but I love the stadium and love the vibes.” Catching his pitch was Marlins pitcher Jesús Luzardo, who watched and rooted for Willis as a kid. “Growing up down here, I was a big fan of his and got to watch his 2003 season, him win a World Series, and his career start,” said Luzardo. The two southpaws then sparked a relationship after Willis reached out when Luzardo was a member of the Oakland Athletics. “He was nice enough to talk to me and give me some advice,” said Luzardo. “Ever since then, we’ve just gone back and forth.” While they have maintained the friendship through texting, Sunday marked a rare opportunity for them to interact in person. “It’s a blessing,” said Luzardo. “Not everyone gets a chance to talk to someone they looked up to when they were young, so it’s something I like to take advantage of. I talk to him as much as possible and get his opinion as much as possible.” The impact Willis was able to have on a young Luzardo and countless Marlins fans is something that he selflessly attributes to those around him. “For a young whippersnapper from Oakland, California to come here and be so green, a lot of people, from my teammates to so many different people in the organization, they put their arms around me and taught me the ropes,” said Willis. “I’m super proud, and I think they know deep down that they all played a part in my success in Miami.” While he no longer resides in Miami and is not an official member of the organization, both still and will forever hold a special place in his heart. About Singular Care: Singular Care was founded by entrepreneurs Santiago Tejeda and Ignacio Lopez, who have a track record of creating innovative products that solve consumer problems through sustainable design.  With this latest venture, the pair are redefining the oral care experience with the launch of Singular Care’s first product: a medical-grade, stainless steel toothbrush with a recyclable, replaceable elastomer head. This groundbreaking product is racking up online sales and global accolades out of the gate:  selected for prestigious impact accelerators including the Latino Business Network at Stanford University, the Social Enterprise Greenhouse in New England and the Westerwelle Foundation’s Young Founder Programme in Berlin, as well as winning a coveted cash prize in Pharrell William’s Black Ambitions Class of 2023. Beyond its initial product, Singular Care has a pipeline of oral care products that will bring design and sustainability to the bathrooms and travel kits of discerning consumers across the globe in the coming months.
