  • Through the First Round at Junior Amateur Match Play

The first round of stroke play seeding started today at Streamsong Resort for the Junior Amateur Match Play Championship. The Boys (16-18) Division competed on the Red Course for the first round while the Boys (13-15) Division and the Girls (13-18) Division competed on the Blue Course. Boys (16-18) Division Clipper Salmon posted the low round with a five-under-par, 67 on the Red Course. Salmon has found success this summer with a win at the FJT Golf Road Junior, a top-10 at the 70th Boys’ Junior, and a top-10 at the 107th Amateur Championship. He explains how he is building on these positive results, “A lot of good results, especially at the Am, showed myself that I can play well and I can hang with some of the best players in the state. My confidence has really built over the last few tournaments and I have now been able to carry it over to this tournament.”  Arth Sinha posted a great round with a four-under-par, 68. Not far behind are Tommy Tyler and Evan Raynor both with a three-under-par, 69. Boys (13-15) Nicholas Brown, Nolan DeForest, and Jacob Watson all share first place after posting a two-under-par, 70 on the Blue Course. DeForest saw success at this event last year advancing all the way to the final match which ended in 22 holes. He explains his approach from stroke play to match play, “In stroke play, I almost never look at the leaderboard, I just stay in my own world. But when it comes to match play, I make my strategy as I go based off of what my opponent is doing.” Henry Wang and Kenny Klein fired rounds of one-under-par, 71. Girls (13-18) Defending champion, Ana Boone, is back on top of the leaderboard after the first round of stroke play seeding. Boone posted a three-under-par, 69 to lead the field by one stroke. She explains her round, “Today was really fun. I just played really consistent golf hitting a lot of fairways and a lot of greens. I did have a lot of two putts, but made some good saves too. I had a couple four-footers for par, and a couple for birdie but I also made in some longer ones too which helped.” She further explained that knowing she won this event once gives her the confidence to play well again and hopefully defend her title. In addition, Alyssa Mixon posted a two-under-par, 70. Mara King and Alexandra Snyder both posted rounds of one-under-par, 71. What’s Next Tomorrow the Boys (16-18) Division will compete the second round of stroke play seeding with an 8:30AM shotgun on the Blue Course. Upon the completion of the round the low 32 players will advance to match play in the afternoon. The Boys (13-15) Division and the Girls (13-18) Division will compete in their second round of stroke play seeding with tee times from 7:30AM – 11:40 AM off of the first hole on the Red Course. Upon completion of play, the low 16 competitors from each division will advance to match play in the following day. By ML Staff. Content/Image courtesy of FSGA

  • 'Photo Finish' LIVE Unlocks a New Generation of Horse Racing Fans

A new generation of horse racing fans is being introduced to the age-old sport through the virtual lens of a video game built on the world’s most advanced technology. The game is Photo Finish™ LIVE , founded by Ian Cummings, the former Creative Director of EA Sports Madden NFL and, as of 2023, an official gaming partner of the Kentucky Derby. Unlocking a Gaming Generation of Horse Racing Fans For many players, PFL has transformed their little to no previous interest in horse racing into a love affair with the sport. One example of the game’s impact is Phil Baker, a chartered accountant from the Isle of Man who owns the virtual stable YSM Racing Club . After a year-long pursuit of the title, Baker and YSM were crowned champions of the Virtual Kentucky Derby, a monthly Race for the Roses that digitally mirrors the real-world Derby down to a meticulously detailed virtual replica of the Churchill Downs track. In a short period, Baker has seen his interest in horse racing go from intermittent to passionate enough to travel to Louisville for the 150th Kentucky Derby this past May to win the race's virtual equivalent in the following weeks. 'Before Photo Finish™, I was just a casual horse-racing fan, mostly from the wagering side,” says Baker. 'My interest in horse racing has grown considerably. PFL has opened up my interest in horse racing in the USA and beyond, where I previously only casually followed UK or Ireland racing.” After joining the game, Baker says that attending the Kentucky Derby quickly made it onto his bucket list, which he checked off by attending the 150th Kentucky Derby in May. Baker traveled thousands of miles to watch the historic race alongside a large contingent of fellow virtual stable owners who had traveled from every corner of the globe, all thanks to their shared passion for a video game that introduced them to the sport. “The atmosphere at Churchill Downs was electric, and the moments before the main event were unforgettable. It was surreal to be there, knowing a video game led me to fly across the world to watch America’s biggest race.' Baker said. Not long after watching Mystik Dan crowned Kentucky Derby champion in person, his stable’s virtual racehorse, Sprinter Sacre, won the digital equivalent of the rare honor – the Virtual Kentucky Derby. YSM Racing Stable at Churchill Downs “Winning the Virtual Kentucky Derby has been a huge driving factor for me and the rest of our stable syndicate, YSM Racing, since the day the partnership with Churchill Downs was announced,” Baker shares, adding the journey to VKD champion was a long, but worthwhile trek. “We knew we had the bloodlines and the breeding acumen to create a Virtual Kentucky Derby winner -- and we came close multiple times, hitting 2nd place twice. We thought we had a great chance to win on at least half a dozen previous races; it never clicked until we eventually won the 14th running of the Virtual Kentucky Derby with our horse, Sprinter Sacre. “The race went off at midnight UK time, and I excitedly woke up my wife and newborn. It was a moment I'll never forget.' Churchill Aims to Draw New Generation of Horse Racing Fans Photo Finish Live Community Meet Up at Churchill Downs' First Turn Club As a virtual horse racing experience, Photo Finish™ LIVE mimics all the thrills, excitement, and rewards that come with its real-world counterpart. The game is so realistic, in fact, that throughout the past decade, NBC Sports has utilized Photo Finish™ 3D simulations of the Kentucky Derby during its pre-race telecast. From the First Call before every race to hosting a monthly Virtual Kentucky Derby, every aspect of real-world horse racing has been digitally duplicated to showcase sport hundreds of millions of people worldwide enjoy to a new audience. The fact that the game is so true to life largely made Photo Finish™ a perfect partner for Churchill Downs to help make horse racing more accessible and digestible to a young gaming generation. 'One of our objectives is to really lean into and engage that next generation of Kentucky Derby fans,' Casey Cook Ramage, VP of Marketing & Partnerships at Churchill Downs, told BizBash ahead of the 149th Derby . 'That's why we're working with Third Time and other partners that can help us find those fans and celebrate in a way that interests them.' The success Photo Finish™ LIVE has had in attracting a new generation of fans is evident, with events like KD150 serving as proof of the vital bridge between virtual and real-world racing experiences. 'As PFL continues to succeed, it will draw more traditional racing fans to the game as well as bring an entirely new audience to real-life horse racing,' says Baker. 'KD150 was proof of this bridge, and I believe it will only get bigger in the coming years – we’ll see you for KD151!' With a little over a year under its belt and a mobile app coming to market soon, Baker believes many more will soon learn what thousands of Photo Finish™ gamers have—the only thing better than a realistic horse racing video game is real horse racing itself. 'Online horse racing games like Photo Finish™ LIVE can introduce a new audience to horse racing,' Baker notes. 'I've seen members of the game and community who had no prior interest in horse racing develop a genuine passion for the sport – it feels as though we’re only just getting started and scratching the surface.” What is Photo Finish LIVE? A simulation-style horse racing game, Photo Finish™ allows players to own, race, and breed virtual horses just like the real thing. Filling a gap in the gaming market where no true-to-life horse racing game existed prior, the in-depth strategy has taken the gaming industry by storm and fast-tracked the introduction of horse racing to thousands of virtual stable owners participating in continuous, 24/7 virtual horse races. • Dimarco Goes Low to Capture 78th Florida Open Championship

Cristian DiMarco was on fire from the moment he stepped onto the tee this morning. His stellar performance earned him the prestigious title of the 78th Florida Open Champion. DiMarco fired off rounds of 69-67-64 to reach a staggering 16-under par.  Few starts are as electrifying as Cristian's, who birdied the first three holes right off that bat to snatch an early lead. Daniel Robinson and yesterday's frontrunner, Brad Schneider, navigated smoothly between 8-under and 10-under on their front nine. Schneider stumbled with a double bogey on the eighth, and Robinson faced a similar setback on the ninth hole. As the final stretch approached, DiMarco surged ahead, widening his lead. Despite Robinson's attempts to challenge with birdies on holes 11, 13, 16, and 17, DiMarco maintained his focus, consistently adding to his birdie count. By the end of the day, DiMarco had birdied half of the course, totaling nine birdies, with five coming on the back nine. Demonstrating true championship form, DiMarco sealed his victory with a birdie on the last hole. DiMarco had a good feeling going into his final round, “I love these two golf courses, and I kind of just felt like I was playing good coming in and I felt like I had a chance from the start of the week and that if I just stuck to my game plan I would have a chance.” When asked if he thought his three consecutive birdies on the first three holes helped boost his confidence going into the rest of the round, he remarked “For sure, it’s always nice to get a good start. I’ve played a lot of golf with Daniel Robinson and Brad Schnieder, I know them pretty well and know they’re really good players, so I figured I had to get out and run and try to hide.” DiMarco navigated finding hiding spots from his competitors well as he walked away with the status of champion and a $20,000 check.  John Somers, Pierre Viallaneix, and Luke Gifford, all finished in a three-way tie for third, with a total of 9-under par.  James Hassell, who finished in a four-way tie for sixth was named our low amateur after firing off rounds of 72-69-67 (208). In his final round, Hassell captured seven birdies to declare himself as this year’s low amateur. By ML Staff. Content/Image courtesy of FSGA

  • Tips for Choosing the Right Clinic and Surgeon for Your Hair Transplant in Turkey

When facing hair loss, many are turning to  hair transplant Turkey for a permanent solution. However, the key to a successful transplant lies in selecting the right clinic and surgeon. As the popularity of this surgical procedure in Turkey grows, so does the availability of clinics, making the selection process potentially confusing and complex. Here, we will provide you with a concise guide filled with tips and advice in choosing the right clinic and surgeon for your hair transplant in Turkey. Image by mraoraor / Adobestock Accreditation and Certification One of the first steps to take when searching for a hair transplant clinic in Turkey is to check their accreditation. Look for clinics that are recognised by international hair transplantation institutions, as this signifies standards of care and expertise. Similarly, it's vital to ensure that the surgeon you choose has substantial credentials and is experienced in hair transplantation surgery. Experience Matters Beyond certification, the surgeon’s experience is critically important. In the field of hair transplants, skill and expertise develop over time; thus surgeons with a record of numerous successful procedures under their belt are often a safe bet. Do some background study on your prospective surgeon's education, training and how long they've practiced hair transplantation surgery.  Before and After Photos The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Before-and-after photos could serve as proof of a surgeon's work and the clinic's efficacy. A surgeon who delivers consistent success would undoubtedly have a plethora of before-and-after photos. However, one needs to critically scrutinise these images to ensure they are not manipulated or altered. Image by Africa Studios / Adobestock Patient Reviews and Testimonies Another source of insight into the clinic's and surgeon's abilities is through patient testimonies and online reviews. Honest patient reviews provide a glimpse into real-life experiences and outcomes, which can be more helpful than the most elaborate website or brochure. However, remember to look for reviews on independent and trusted platforms for the most objective feedback. Transparent Costs Though we often associate quality with a higher price tag, this is not always the case. Some clinics in Turkey offer high-quality hair transplants at lower prices due to the country's lower cost of living. Look for a clinic that's upfront about their fees from the consultation stage since hidden costs may lead to budget overshoots further down the line. Always cross-check the cost structure with what's included in the package. Post-Surgery Care A crucial aspect often disregarded is the importance of post-surgery care. Aftercare can significantly impact the success of your hair transplant; thus, a clinic offering comprehensive post-operative care should be high on your prospective list. Image by Dusko / Adobestock Remember, a hair transplant is a significant decision and requires thorough deliberation and research. Weigh up different clinics and take your time to find a surgeon in Turkey who matches your needs and expectations. While each person's hair transplant journey will be unique, these tips should guide you towards making an informed choice, and subsequently, a successful operation. By ML Staff. • Hurricane Straps Keep Roofs on Houses and Can Improve Safety During Tornadoes

Many people think of a well-built house as one where the walls are strong enough to hold up the roof so it won’t fall on them. This is reinforced by children’s stories like the Three Little Pigs , where the house made of brick is the strongest when the Big Bad Wolf comes to town. When a strong tornado passes through a neighbourhood, it results in total chaos. Debris is everywhere. Shingles and siding and bricks are thrown about. Entire roofs are tossed, often landing on neighbouring homes. Walls collapse, cars are rolled and flipped. Insulation is stuck to every surface like a strange snowfall. On July 15, a tornado struck Barrie, Ont., destroying several homes: Could anything have been done to minimize the damage in Barrie? Holding on to the roof In any windstorm, tornadoes included, the roof needs to be secured — this is due to the uplift, the same physics that allows an aircraft to fly. This runs counter to our intuition since we tend to think about roofs collapsing, not flying. The uplift is the main vulnerability of houses. The structure of residential roofs in Canada tend to be strong because they are designed to handle the heavy weight of snow in winter. For the wind, which acts in the opposite direction as the snow, it is the nails connecting the trusses to the top of the wall that become critical to ensure that the roof stays in place during a severe storm. The National Building Code of Canada requires three nails — just over three inches long — in each roof-to-wall connection . These toe nails, as they are called, are what hold the roof down in the wind. If this is done properly, the roof structure should be safe until wind speeds reach about 160 kilometres an hour . At such wind speeds, asphalt shingles may blow off but the roof structure will remain intact. Houses are not designed for tornadoes, although the building code discusses tornadoes. The requirements for fastening the walls to the foundations were developed to deal with tornadoes. These were included in the 1995 release of the National Building Code following tragic deaths in 1984 when cottages were swept into Blue Sea Lake in Québec , along with post-storm observations following a 1985 tornado in Barrie . It is now known that toe-nailed connections are the weak links in the structure, more likely to fail before the roof sheathing and before the walls pull apart from the foundation. Walls are more likely to collapse when the roof is gone, and the roof itself can become airborne. Both of these are threats to life and safety. The Northern Tornadoes Project survey in the immediate aftermath of the recent tornado in Barrie indicated that several homes did not meet the building code requirements because of missing toe nails. This is nothing new. Similar observations were made in 2009, when tornadoes landed in Vaughan , and in 2014 in Angus . Image courtesy of iko. Hurricane Strap are long, thin pieces of metal that connects the wall plate and the rafter providing an extra support. Unknown speeds To design for tornadoes, we need to know the wind speeds in tornadoes. These are rarely measured. Rather, tornado wind speeds are assessed through the damage they cause, via the Enhanced Fujita Scale . The recent Barrie tornado was assessed to have had maximum wind speeds of 210 kilometres an hour based on the damage to a few of the houses. It was a strong tornado. However, if this strong tornado had instead gone through farmers’ fields, missing all buildings and trees, then it would have been assessed as an EF-0 (90-130 km/hr) tornado even though its true strength was greater. Clearly, the use of damage to estimate the tornado wind speeds is challenging, particularly in sparsely populated areas. As a result, the reported intensity of a tornado — its maximum wind speed — depends on what it hits and, therefore, on the quality of construction. A roof with only a single toe nail would be assessed as EF-1, while properly installed toe nails yield an expected wind speed of about 195 kilometres an hour, which is EF-2 . Put another way, a wood-frame roof is expected to fail in an EF-2 tornado, while improper toe nails would lead to roof failure in an EF-1 tornado. As a result of this uncertainty, quantifying wind speeds in tornadoes is still an active topic of research and development . Nevertheless, the combination of tornado simulators , wind tunnels that create tornado vortices to define the wind forces on buildings, and full-scale laboratory tests on houses to determine their strength has helped. They’ve provided good estimates of failure-inducing wind speeds during tornadoes under a range of conditions including that of the roof-to-wall connections . Could anything have been done to mitigate the damage in this EF-2 tornado? In any tornado, the highest wind speeds only occur over a relatively small proportion of the total damage path . That means damage reduction measures can be quite effective in mitigating damage from the overall storm. If all of the houses in Barrie had been built to the building code requirements, there would have been less damage overall, although there still would have been some significant damage because of its intensity. Strapping down There is a better solution: the use of hurricane straps instead of toe nails. This well-established technology, developed to deal with hurricanes, can work to keep the roof attached to the walls in tornadoes with wind speeds up to about EF-2 . They are inexpensive, costing less than $200 per house to install, and are easy to inspect for compliance. Since EF-2 and lower-rated tornadoes represent more than 95 per cent of all tornadoes , requiring straps in the building code could reduce much of the damage of these severe storms and and significantly improve safety. While a few other things need to be done to make houses fully able to withstand EF-2 tornadoes , this adjustment would eliminate the weakest link, increasing resilience and safety by keeping the roof on the walls and stopping entire roofs from flying downwind and hitting other buildings. • Breaking Boundaries: An Exclusive Interview with Toni Trucks

Miami Living Magazine had the pleasure of speaking with Toni Trucks, a standout actress renowned for her role as Lieutenant Lisa Davis on CBS/Paramount+’s hit series SEAL Team. As the show approaches its highly anticipated seventh and final season, premiering August 11th, Toni reflects on the journey of portraying the only female series regular in a male-dominated environment and the empowering experience of playing an Intelligence Officer. Beyond her role in the series, Toni shares insights into her life outside of her career and her excitement for future roles that will showcase new dimensions of her acting talent. Join us as we delve into Toni’s remarkable career and the diverse experiences that shape her life. Miami Living (ML): SEAL Team is about to wrap up its seventh and final season. Can you share your thoughts on the bittersweet experience of saying goodbye to a show that's been such a significant part of your career?   Toni: When the news came that this would be our final season, I can definitely say I didn’t feel ready. We have had the privilege over seven seasons to create such full characters. It felt like they all still had a lot of stories to tell. That being said, the writers have done such a beautiful job with this season that I am really excited for the fans to take this ride with us.   ML: You’ve portrayed Lt. Lisa Davis, the only female series regular on SEAL Team.   Can you walk us through the training regimen and challenges you faced to authentically portray this character?   Toni: My character doesn’t normally find herself on missions these days. It’s been really fun over these past 7 seasons to go from packing parachutes and running coms to becoming an officer and helping to steer the SEAL Team from a different angle. My training during our time has run the gamut. Fitness, firearms, axe throwing, stunt fighting and phone books worth of technical jargon that would make your head spin.   ML: Being a woman of color in a male-dominated series must have come with its own set of challenges and triumphs. Can you reflect on how this role has been challenging and/or empowering for you?   Toni: Women currently make up roughly 22% of the military and women of color are even less. This extreme imbalance was something I considered often in my portrayal of Lt. Lisa Davis.  Numbers aside, women are excelling at all levels in the military. Lisa is a nod to the incredible women I know already exist.  I am filled with pride to be playing someone who is whip-smart, navigating tricky spaces and doing an excellent job! My hope is that Lisa’s story will ultimately inspire young women of color in any field.   ML: You’re involved with TAPS, a charity supporting surviving military families. Can you tell us more about your work with this organization and what it means to you personally?   Toni: I was introduced to TAPS and their important work through my outreach at SEAL Team. I was so impressed with the women in particular at the helm of this organization that I really wanted to get involved. I am now proudly serving as an honorary board member. One of the things I absolutely love is their work in youth programming, curating experiences that children may have missed out on with their loved one now gone. TAPS is serving people at every age and in every stage of grief. It is important and beautiful work.   ML: You’ve had a diverse career with roles in everything from action-packed series to charming comedies. If you could switch places with any of your previous characters for a day, who would you choose and what would you do?   Toni: You know, I did a Comedy Central series some years back called CORPORATE. In it I played a ridiculous news anchor named ‘Karen James’ and had the privilege of being the love interest of the late Lance Reddick, who was absolutely brilliant.  Being in that wild world and working with Lance again would be a dream. CORPORATE was definitely a show that I wish I had spent more time on. If you have never seen it… find it.   ML: What’s one of your favorite ways to relax and recharge when you’re not working?   Toni: My go-to relax mode includes lots of quiet time (NO TV) and sunshine. A beach or pool are equally welcome. Now when I am really wanting to energize my spirit, I absolutely love taking a trip to New York City and filling my days and nights with theatre. I always come home feeling inspired and ready to jump into the next project.   ML: Looking ahead, you’ve mentioned excitement about playing a character unlike any you’ve portrayed before. Can you give us a hint about what this new role entails and what attracted you to it?   Toni: I don’t yet know what is to come but I am looking forward to a new role. Meeting your next character is like meeting a new best friend.
