  • Functional Rehab Training: A Holistic Approach to Recovery

Functional rehab training is transforming the way we approach recovery and rehabilitation. Unlike traditional rehab methods that often focus on isolated muscle groups or specific injuries, functional rehab emphasizes restoring the body’s ability to perform everyday tasks and movements with ease. This holistic approach is designed to enhance overall physical function, improve quality of life, and reduce the risk of future injuries. Image by Friends Stock / Adobestock What is Functional Rehab Training? Functional rehab training focuses on exercises and movements that mimic real-life activities. The goal is to help individuals regain their ability to perform daily tasks, such as walking, climbing stairs, or lifting objects, effectively and safely. This type of training incorporates a variety of exercises that engage multiple muscle groups and joints, promoting coordination, balance, and strength in a comprehensive manner. Key Principles of Functional Rehab Movement Patterns : Functional rehab training emphasizes the importance of proper movement patterns. By focusing on exercises that replicate natural movements, such as squatting, reaching, or bending, individuals can retrain their bodies to move efficiently and safely. Core Stability : A strong core is essential for maintaining balance and stability. Functional rehab often includes exercises that target the core muscles, helping to support and protect the spine and improve overall functional capacity. Progressive Loading : The training involves gradually increasing the intensity and complexity of exercises. This progressive approach helps individuals build strength and endurance over time while minimizing the risk of overuse injuries. Integration of Multiple Systems : Functional rehab training integrates various physical systems, including muscular, skeletal, and neurological. By addressing these systems together, the approach aims to restore optimal function and prevent future issues. Image by Viacheslav Yakobchuk / Adobestock Benefits of Functional Rehab Training Functional rehab training offers numerous benefits for individuals recovering from injuries, surgeries, or chronic conditions. These include: Enhanced Recovery : By focusing on functional movements, individuals can recover more quickly and effectively, regaining their ability to perform daily activities with confidence. Reduced Risk of Re-injury : Strengthening the body’s ability to move correctly can help prevent future injuries and improve long-term physical health. Improved Quality of Life : Functional rehab training can lead to significant improvements in overall physical fitness, making daily tasks easier and more enjoyable. Practical Application Functional rehab can be tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual. It often involves working with a trained physical therapist or rehabilitation specialist who can design a personalized program based on an individual’s goals and condition. • Miami-Made Film 'Mountains' Opens August 16 with Filmmaker Q&A Screenings

Struggling to connect with their son, who has distanced himself from his Haitian roots and dreams of an artistic career, Xavier and Esperance grapple with their changing family dynamic. Xavier's desire to provide a better home for his family clashes with the reality of dismantling the very neighborhood that defines their identity. Despite the encroaching signs of gentrification, Little Haiti pulses with its unique traditions and cultural rhythms. • Vacheron Constantin Unveils Métiers d'Art Series Honoring Ancient Chinese Culture with “Seawater Cliff” Motif

Vacheron Constantin pays tribute to ancient Chinese culture with its new Métiers d'Art - Tribute to traditional symbols series, featuring two interpretations of the "Seawater Cliff", a legendary Chinese motif that first appeared in the 14th century. This depiction of wave-lashed cliffs belongs to the cultural tradition of Imperial China, a special field of study for Mr. Song, the Former Associate Research Librarian of the Palace Museum, who guided the Vacheron Constantin artisans on this project. Housed in a 38 mm-diameter case in 18K pink or white gold, powered by Calibre 2460 driving central hours and minutes hands, these dials provide a forceful, beautiful expression of Chinese cultural symbolism.   A fruitful cultural collaboration    The Métiers d'Art - Tribute to traditional symbols series offers a journey into the history and culture of China's last two Imperial dynasties, from the 14th to the early 20th centuries. To immerse itself in the distinctive decor of this period, the Maison took a particular interest in the decorative arts and notably in the “Seawater Cliff” motif omnipresent on courtly architectural elements, but also on furniture and porcelain, as well as on imperial clothing and particularly the so-called ‘dragon’ robes. These richly embroidered silk ceremonial garments conveyed distinctive symbolism according to their motifs.  For this research work, the Maison benefited from the advice of Mr. Song, the Former Associate Research Librarian of Palace Museum housed in Beijing's Forbidden City. In agreement with this expert in Chinese history and symbolism, studies on the dials of the four Métiers d’Art limited editions focused on the "Seawater Cliff" motif. Extensively documented by Mr. Song, this depiction features a mountain towering above the tides with their ebb and flow lashing its cliffs. Embroidered on the lower hem and cuffs of the robe, this ornamentation was regarded as auspicious for those who wore it.    A cultural tribute    Although water and mountains inspired the decoration of various artefacts in China as early as the Neolithic period – and were represented in an increasingly figurative way throughout the first millennium AD – the combination of the two came later. It was with the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties that the motif really took shape. Officially named "Seawater Cliff" under Emperor Wanli (1573-1620), it was reserved for the Imperial family. As its name suggests, this motif refers to the sea, its tides represented by long undulating lines that come crashing down in powerful surges against the cliff. Symbolising the emperor's immutability faced with the vagaries of life, these overhanging mountain cliffs are unaffected by the waves.    In Chinese, the words 'tide' and 'dynasty' are homonyms, while the word 'cliff' can also mean 'ginger buds' – of which one can recognise the outline on the edge of this escarpment overlooking the sea. In Chinese tradition, water and mountains are also strong territorial symbols. With this "Seawater Cliff" motif richly emblazoned on his ceremonial robes the emperor embodied stability. Like the unshakeable cliff above the waves, a symbol of peace and longevity, he was the guarantor of the country's fortune and prosperity. This motif became very popular and spread across all social classes in furniture, sculpture, decorative objects and architecture.  An ode to craftsmanship    Beating at the heart of the 38 mm-diameter case in 18K pink and white gold is in-house Calibre 2460, chosen for its aesthetic appeal and compact dimensions (26.2 mm in diameter and 3.60 mm thick). The movement’s configuration driving central hands ensures seamless integration with the dial to give scope and depth to the passing hours and minutes. Endowed with a 40-hour power reserve, it meets all the criteria of the Hallmark of Geneva certifying both origin and horological expertise. The 22K gold rotor echoes the symbolism of the dial, since the oscillating weight is delicately engraved with a motif recalling the movement of waves and tides.    Métiers d’Art - Tribute to traditional symbols - Eternal flow: cloisonné enamelling and engraving    Against a star-studded night sky, the mountain peaks, bordered by vegetation in the shape of ginger buds, are caressed by tidal waves. With its colourful aesthetic and respect for traditional Chinese ornamentation, this depiction is a masterpiece of cloisonné enamelling, which was originated in China. The technique is also named Jingtai Blue , which pays tribute to its heyday which is in the era of Emperor Jingtai in the Ming Dynasty. The latter technique was a natural choice because of the flexibility it offers in terms of both the choice of colours and the graphic design of the intricate shapes.    Laying the 220 gold wires used to delineate the enamelling fields forming the "Seawater Cliff" motif along requires more than 50 hours of work to shape the motif. This is followed by the enamelling itself in successive layers according to colour and intensity, with a kiln firing between each operation. It takes no less than 70 hours to achieve the rich tones that are so characteristic of this piece. A final polish then completes the work to highlight the gold cloisonné that gives substance to the motif. Finally, a translucent enamel coating instils a unique glow into this highly architectural composition, enhanced by the finesse of the lines and ancestral expertise.  To highlight this enamelling work, the bezel of the model is entirely hand-engraved with a bat motif. In Chinese, 'bat' and 'happiness' have similar pronunciations – which goes some way to explaining the status of this animal as a harbinger of good fortune. In Chinese decoration, five bats are often seen together, traditionally expressing the "Five Good Fortunes": longevity, wealth, stability, virtue and happiness. On this watch, the engraver has depicted the bat in the form of a frieze composed of successive volutes representing the animal’s characteristic silhouette.    Métiers d’Art - Tribute to traditional symbols - Moonlight slivers: Grand Feu enameling, engraving and gemsetting    For this second "Seawater Cliff" motif, the aim was to achieve a depth effect on a monochrome base. Crafted in 18K white or pink gold depending on the model, the all-in-one-piece dial features hollowed waves, blue enamelled parts and raised diamond-set sections for the mountain area. The master artisan has used a blend of techniques to create this composition, endowing the motif with a subtle yet distinctive aesthetic.  The gold dial is divided into three parts. The first, which delineates the sea, is made of deep-blue Grand Feu enamel applied in successive kiln-fired layers. This is followed by patient engraving. The technique used for this depiction of waves is engraving on enamel to create volutes. These are then accentuated by the master artisan, who fills in the furrows with white enamel that is then also fired. This extremely thin layer creates a subtle shadow on a delicately textured background, creating the impression of a sea in motion.    The second part, devoted to the sea tides running along the mountain range, is reserved for the setting. Each sea tide is delicately hand-set with brilliant-cut diamonds, evoking the moon slivers that inspired the name of this piece. Meanwhile, the third part of the dial serves to add relief, with a mountain range lashed by foaming waves. Meticulously engraved with tone-on-tone champlevé enamel inlays to accentuate the depth of the landscape, this portrayal of the mountains is also worked in drypoint to accentuate the perspective effect.    The sparkling brilliant-cut diamonds adorning the sea tides exude an ashen moonlight gleam, echoed by the setting of the bezel entirely adorned with brilliant-cut diamonds.  ML Staff. Ann Storck Center  (ASC) – a Fort Lauderdale-based private nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching lives of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities – is proud to announce it has completed renovations to its Adult Day Training Program Facility. The program will reopen on Monday, August 5, after a multi-year hiatus.     After experiencing significant damage from Hurricane Irma in 2017, ASC began renovations to its Adult Day Training Program in May 2022. The $1.5 million Adult Day Training renovation project is expected to be completed on August 5, 2024, and it aims to revitalize and enhance the facilities dedicated to serving adults with developmental disabilities. ASC accommodates 96 permanent residents and serves more than 300 clients daily through an array of critical care, learning and ability focused programs. Throughout all its programs and services, the Center intends for individuals to discover ability and build independence so that individuals live happier, more independent, fulfilling lives.   ASC’s Adult Day Training Program is an on-site facility where residents go to participate in a diverse range of activities, fostering social interaction and skill development for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The center-based program cultivates an atmosphere of structure and excitement, where participants eagerly anticipate reuniting with friends and staff members each day. Community involvement is a key focus, and ASC provides a variety of engaging activities to support individuals in achieving their goals while exploring new interests and hobbies. Depending on each participant's individualized plan, they may engage in goal-oriented classes or activities such as music therapy, art therapy, computer training, physical fitness, cooking and daily living skills. The renovation project consisted of several key components designed to improve the functionality, accessibility and overall quality of the Adult Day Training Program including:    Facility Upgrades:  The renovation involved updating the 7,000-square-foot physical infrastructure of the Adult Day Training facilities to create a more conducive environment for learning, socialization and skill development. This included refurbishing interior spaces such as classrooms, activity areas and common areas to improve aesthetics, comfort and functionality. With the renovation, the Adult Day Training Program facility is now fully wheelchair accessible and has four classrooms including an expressive arts room, a music room, a sensory room and a life skills room; six full bathrooms including showers; and a conference room.    The full renovation included painting the inside and outside; refurbishing the floors and walls; adding new electrical, fire and plumbing equipment; and a brand-new air conditioner. The building is equipped with all new furniture and equipment. All safety elements have been upgraded including a generator hook-up in case of hurricanes or emergencies. The building can also be converted into a residential option if necessary. Technology Integration:  The renovation project also included the integration of technology solutions to support program delivery and enhance participant engagement. This involved installing multimedia equipment, interactive displays and assistive technology devices to facilitate learning, communication and skill development.   Program Expansion:  With the renovated facilities, the Adult Day Training Program can now accommodate 70 participants and offer a wider range of activities and services.  The renovation project was a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders, including ASC staff and board members, architect Neal Schofel of Architecture Dynamics and general contractor HITT. The project team worked closely to develop design plans, coordinate construction activities and ensure that the renovation meets the specific needs and requirements of the Adult Day Training Program. This project represents a significant investment in enhancing the quality of life and opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities. By creating a more modern, accessible and inclusive environment, the renovated facilities enable participants to participate in meaningful activities, develop essential skills, and foster social connections, ultimately promoting independence and empowerment within the community.   “The completion of our Adult Day Training Program renovation is an exciting milestone for Ann Storck Center. This expansion allows us to serve more individuals with developmental disabilities in the community and meet the growing demand for adult day training services,” said Ann Storck Center CEO Patricia (Pat) Murphy. “We want to celebrate our accomplishments but look forward with renewed determination and optimism that our work is far from over. Dreams, hard work and commitment can make a difference in lives. We will not rest until our good gets better and our better gets best.”   For more information about ASC, please visit  annstorckcenter.org .  By ML Staff. Images courtesy of annstorckcenter.org

  • South Secures Dramatic Comeback to Clinch Golf Championship with Third Consecutive Victory

The South team came through with a dramatic turnaround, clinching the Championship after trailing 5.5 to 10.5 at the start of the singles matches. This victory marked their third consecutive win. Four-Ball Matches  The wind made for challenging conditions during the morning matches, courtesy of tropical storm Debby. However, the players managed the adversity well and were able to put together some exciting play. South got off to a hot start during the morning four-ball matches, but the North clawed their way back to square it up at the end, finishing with the North and South teams tied at 4-4. Some highlights included Mingbo Jiang, who holed out from the bunker on the 18th in a dramatic finish. Yet, it was still the North side of Adam Hovermale and Jackie Ryan Donovan who took the point for the South team. In her final efforts, Ana Boone birdied her 18th hole to close her match 2-up, leading to a tie overall. Foursome Matches The afternoon foursomes faced even stronger winds, adding to the anticipation as both sides entered the matches tied. The South team initially took the lead again, but there was plenty of golf still to be played. In the first foursome, William Lisle and Layla Pedrique competed against Henry Robards and Alexandra Snyder. Robards and Snyder managed to erase a four hole deficit and ended their match in a tie, while the other groups continued to battle it out.  The scoreboard gradually shifted in favor of the North, who ended the day with a 10.5-5.5 lead over the South. All but one of the foursome matches were completed before a brief weather delay, which affected the match between Ana Boone / Luke Balaskiewicz and Marley Pedrique / Wylie Inman. After a 30-minute rain delay, Boone and Balaskiewicz finished 1-up to add another point for the North, pushing their total into double digits. Single Matchplay In a turn of events, it was the North team who got off to a hot start in the morning. However, blue started overtaking the scoreboard as the first six matches ended in a point for the South team. Dannika Hines of the North team outlasted Claire Lu 5 & 4 to bring a point for the North team while eight matches were still battling it out. As roughly half the matches turned in, it was 12.5-11.5 in favor of the South team.  Critical matches, including Maggie Potash (North) versus Natalie Angelo (South) and Palmer Haynes (North) versus William Lisle (South), went all square after the South took control midway through the back-nine. Angelo outlasted Potash with a birdie on the 18th hole to win 1-up. Palmer would breathe some life back into the North team after birdieing the 18th hole, winning his match against Lisle. However, the decisive point was clinched by Jack Ryan Donovan, who defeated Henry Robards 3 & 2. Three players went undefeated in their matches: Palmer Haynes (North), Dannika Hines (North), and Xin Wang (South). • Celebrating Disability Pride Month: USTA Florida Remains Committed to Adaptive Tennis Growth

As Disability Pride Month comes to a close, USTA Florida highlights efforts in the adaptive tennis community to further the sport’s accessibility. This month, USTA Florida had the pleasure of supporting community events focused on giving adaptive athletes the chance to enjoy tennis.  In Tallahassee, the SportsAbility Alliance has been a cornerstone for adaptive sports and tennis, hosting weekly sessions every Thursday night throughout July. This initiative has been running successfully for ten years, welcoming all ages of players. USTA Florida helps the SportsAbility Alliance by providing free equipment and support to ensure these sessions run smoothly and as many people as possible can attend.  The program is structured to cater to both youth and adult participants. The first hour is dedicated to adaptive youth, allowing young players to learn and enjoy the game in a supportive environment. The second hour welcomes adaptive adults, giving them an environment to connect with others through their shared love of tennis.  This year saw a fantastic turnout each week, with participation from both new and returning players. The sessions not only provided a platform for skill development but also helped these athletes make social connections.  On July 25, USTA Florida was proud to be part of the Disability & Adaptive Recreation Expo in Jacksonville. This event was a vibrant celebration of adaptive sports and activities, offering attendees the chance to try a variety of adaptive sports, including tennis, archery, volleyball, surfing, and bicycling. USTA Florida set up a booth and a tennis court, giving participants hands-on experience with adaptive tennis.  The expo was also highlighted by Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan, as she proclaimed July 26 as ADA Day in the city, commemorating the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act on July 26, 1990. This recognition underscored the significance of the event and the ongoing efforts to promote accessibility and inclusivity.  Looking ahead, USTA Florida is excited to host the Adaptive Unified Doubles National Qualifier on August 24 and 25. This event will bring together teams consisting of one adaptive player and one non-adaptive player, competing in Unified Doubles format.   The top two teams from this qualifier will advance to the National Championship in Orlando later this year. Registration for the event is free.  As Disability Pride Month concludes, USTA Florida remains dedicated to promoting adaptive tennis and supporting athletes with disabilities. The events of this past month have demonstrated how the power of sports bring people together, break down barriers, and create lasting positive change. USTA Florida looks forward to continuing this important work and expanding opportunities for adaptive athletes in the future.  By ML Staff.
