- From Bookstall to Masterpieces: The Legacy of Au Bak Ling
Mr. Au Bak Ling left school at a young age to help support his family, and from humble beginnings, he went on to establish an international conglomerate. A highly esteemed Hong Kong collector, he achieved tremendous success and built one of the most remarkable private collections of Chinese imperial ceramics through rigorous effort and a drive to pursue the very best. His collection has enticed fellow collectors and enthusiasts for decades. Kevin Ching, chairman of Christie’s Asia, engages in a conversation with the collector’s daughter, Angela, and unveils the story behind Mr. Au’s legendary life and collection Mr. Au at home, circa 1982-1983 Humble beginnings with great ambitions Au Bak Ling was born in Hong Kong in 1928 into a poor family. When he was only ten years old, he was forced to leave school, in order to help his father run a small, second-hand bookstall. In December 1941, war broke out in Asia-Pacific, and on 25th December Hong Kong was occupied by Japanese troops. Mr. Au was only thirteen years of age at the time, but found himself burdened by the responsibility of supporting his family. Nevertheless, in 1943 he formally started a business under his own name ‘Ling Kee’.Mr. Au quickly realised that self-cultivation was the only way forward, and his first step towards that end was to acquire a good dictionary and to study English assiduously. With his efforts, Mr. Au was able to attain an excellent command of both spoken and written English. His mastery of the Chinese language also enabled him to undertake complex translations and compose elegant Chinese couplets. ‘The first one (book stall) on the left was called Ling Kee, and was run by a ten-year-old child. This child was the youngest stallholder, but he was very well-informed – he knew about Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, as well as the works of the great German writer Goethe – and was already the most perspicacious.’ - Dai Wangshu The well-known Chinese poet, translator and essayist Dai Wangshu lived in Hong Kong for several years. He wrote a number of essays, including some relating to the literary life of Hong Kong. The young Au Bak Ling featured in one of his articles titled ‘Hong Kong’s Second-hand Book Market’. ‘At the lower end of one of the ladder streets, beside the theatre in Queen’s Road Central, there were five stalls going up the steps from the main road. The first one on the left was called Ling Kee, and was run by a ten year-old child, whose father managed a scrap paper stall a little further down. This child was the youngest stall-holder, but he was very well-informed – he knew about Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, as well as the works of the great German writer Goethe – and was already the most perspicacious’, he wrote. Talent plus persistent self-improvement, transformed the young Au Bak Ling and changed his destiny. Mr. Au later expanded the Ling Kee business, ordering new books from England. The competition in the book trade was extremely fierce and he found it necessary to move into the retail market, where he managed to become the largest supplier of school textbooks in Hong Kong. It brought Mr. Au considerable satisfaction when, despite the fact that British publishing houses had dominated the market in Hong Kong for more than 120 years, Ling Kee became the major publisher of textbooks for Hong Kong students, many of whom have become leaders in Hong Kong today. An astonishing entry into the collecting world In November 1974, Mr. Au joined a fellow Rotarian in attending an auction preview. Until that time, his interest had only been in Chinese paintings of the Lingnan School. He became enthralled by the great variety of shapes, colours, and decorative styles of the porcelains on display. The next day, he ventured into the saleroom and bid freely on everything that attracted him. By the end of the sale, he had purchased 14 pieces, and thus began his forty-five-year journey of collecting Chinese ceramics. Mr. Au in Christie’s Hong Kong’s first sale in 1986 (the third from the left in the third row) Angela recalls that her father lived with his collection, regularly examining and admiring the prized pieces. Yet he always reminded himself that he was only ‘the custodian and not the owner of the piece in perpetuity’. ‘What incredible luck makes it possible at all to obtain an ancient piece many centuries after its production?’ he would wonder. ‘The time that the collectors spend with their pieces should be cherished because of this.’ Therefore, he made a wish to sell part of his prized collection after he passed away. ‘A true collector must have knowledge, passion, determination and patience in order to build up a good collection.’ - Au Bak Ling Mr. Au quoted the scholar Au Yeung Shiu (Ouyang Xiu, 1007-1072 – eminent Song dynasty statesman, historian, and poet) in stating that three essential elements are required in order to become an art collector: appreciation, opportunity, and financial resources. He once declared, ‘A true collector must have knowledge, passion, determination, and patience in order to build up a good collection. Even more importantly, he must rank rarity, quality, beauty, cultural value, and the unique features of an object much higher than its commercial value. If he does otherwise, any talk about the art of collecting is meaningless. There is no shortcut to connoisseurship.’ This was one of the most important and valuable takeaways of Mr. Au from his collecting journey of over forty-five years. One of the most remarkable private collections of Imperial Chinese Porcelain The Au Bak Ling collection of Chinese porcelain is one of the most comprehensive private collections of Chinese ceramics with examples spanning over 1,000 years of ceramic production, with iconic and the rarest pieces dating from the Song (960-1279), Yuan (1279-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. The long and glorious period of China’s imperial porcelain production is illustrated in this collection, an all-encompassing overview of its history which became Mr. Au’s collecting objective. According to Angela, her father was particularly drawn to the ceramics from the Chenghua reign period (1464-1487), which is considered one of the peak periods of Chinese imperial porcelain production. The abundance of Chenghua period porcelains in the Au Bak Ling collection is unmatched. The Royal Academy of Art’s first exhibition of a private ceramics collection In 1998, a selection of Au Bak Ling’s ceramic treasures was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. The exhibition, 100 Masterpieces of Imperial Chinese Ceramics from the Au Bak Ling Collection , was the first ceramics exhibition of a single private collection to be held at the Royal Academy since its foundation in 1768, an important testament to the remarkable influence and stature of the Au Bak Ling collection in the global art and collecting world. Mr Au Bak Ling From 22 to 25 September 2024, a special exhibition of highlights from the Au Bak Ling Collection will be on display at Christie’s new Asia Pacific Headquarters, including this important and extremely rare doucai stemcup, Chenghua six-character mark and of the period (1464-1487) This exhibition undoubtedly cemented Mr. Au’s belief that his collection methodology and strategy were correct – focusing on the best objects from great periods. Giving back to society whole-heartedly Mr. Au dedicated himself to working all his life and was always conscious of the importance of giving back to society. He knew very well that ‘A drop of water tastes like sweet dew when one is thirsty’. In 2009, he founded the Au Bak Ling Charity Trust which donates five thousand bags of rice every month to poor families, in addition to funds for various educational scholarships, which he established for the purpose of helping disadvantaged students studying to become teachers in China and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, as well as those in Canada who excel in their fields of study. He especially hoped that the aspiring teachers would view a lifelong career of educating youth as a sacred mission, and would devote their efforts to nurturing tomorrow’s leaders. Mr. Au and family at a charity trust event ‘What you have gained from the community must, at least in some measure, be returned to the community. Every year, one tenth of the family’s income should be donated to the Au Bak Ling Charity Trust to support charitable causes. When performing good deeds and accumulating virtue, helping those in need and alleviating poverty, no reciprocation should be expected.’-Au Bak Ling A portion of the proceeds from the highly anticipated inaugural sale of Chinese imperial ceramics from Mr. Au Bak Ling’s prestigious collection, will be donated to charitable causes, honouring his philanthropic spirit in giving back to society.‘The Au Bak Ling Collection: The Inaugural Sale’ will take place on 26 September 2024, as the first live auction at Christie’s new Asia Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong at the Henderson. From 22 to 25 September, a special exhibition will be on display, showcasing further highlights from the Au Bak Ling Collection, including several extremely rare Chenghua period (1464-1487) imperial porcelains that the collection is celebrated for. - Sundays At the U With Movies: "The Gleaners And I”
Join the University of Miami at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, for a screening of Agnes Varda's "The Gleaners and I" (2000), a self-reflexive documentary in which the French cinema icon explores the world of modern-day gleaners: those living on the margins who survive by foraging for what society throws away. The movie ranked 69th in the 2022 Sight and Sound poll of the 100 greatest movies ever made. THE GLEANERS AND I | 2000) | WRITER-DIRECTOR: Agnes Varda | RUNNING TIME: 1H 22M | IN FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | UNRATED No offensive material | PROJECTED in 2K DCP format Embracing the intimacy and freedom of digital filmmaking, Varda posits herself as a kind of gleaner of images and ideas, one whose generous, expansive vision makes room for ruminations on everything from aging to the birth of cinema to the beauty of heart-shaped potatoes. By turns playful, philosophical, and subtly political, "The Gleaners and I" is a warmly human reflection on the contradictions of our consumerist world from an artist who, like her subjects, finds unexpected richness where few think to look. - Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso Tribute Enamel Collection Celebrates Claude Monet’s Artistic Legacy
To coincide with its participation in the Homo Faber Biennial exhibition in Venice this September, Jaeger-LeCoultre pays homage to the host city with three new limited-edition Reverso Tribute Enamel timepieces. The case-back of each piece features a miniature reproduction of one of Claude Monet’s paintings of Venice, reaffirming the Reverso as an ideal canvas for artistic expression. An Homage to Venice, Captured by the Great Impressionist Master, Claude Monet. Painted late in his career, Monet’s ‘Venice Series’ paintings exquisitely render the architecture and exceptional light of Venice that immediately captivated the artist when he and his wife arrived in La Serenissima in autumn 1908. At first declaring the city “too beautiful to paint”, Monet soon set to work, choosing a dozen different sites and painting them repeatedly at different times of day to capture the changing light. It was a prolific period: during his 10-week stay, Monet painted 37 images. Intricate Works of Craftsmanship Celebrating the Métiers Rares™ Atelier Homo Faber’s mission to honour and promote craft in all of its forms closely mirrors Jaeger-LeCoultre’s commitment to support not only the craft skills of watchmaking but also the artistic crafts associated with Haute Horlogerie. With the new Reverso Tribute Enamel ‘Venice Series’ timepieces, La Grande Maison showcases the talents and skills of the Manufacture’s in-house Métiers Rares™ (Rare Handcrafts) Atelier - bringing together the crafts of miniature painting, enamelling and guillochage - while paying tribute to the mission that it shares with Homo Faber. The first of many challenges in decorating the case-back was to reproduce original works measuring more than 65 x 92 cm onto a surface of 25 x 20 mm. It was not only a feat of miniaturisation to perfectly mimic every detail of Monet’s paintings; the enameller also had to create an illusion of the impasto (the textured effect of thicker paint that the artist applied when he finished the canvases in his studio at Giverny) and recreate the dreamlike quality of the originals, with their fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. It required 14 layers of enamel to achieve the desired intensity and depth of colour – three base layers, four layers of painting and seven layers of translucent ‘fondant’, with up to 15 separate firings at up to 800° Celsius. The three dials, decorated with hand-guilloché patterns beneath translucent coloured enamel, are an eloquent artistic response to the miniature paintings on the case-backs. The enamelling alone requires eight or nine hours of work for each dial, with up to five layers of enamel and six or seven separate firings at up to 800°C. The final challenge is the faultless application of the indexes (requiring tiny holes to be drilled through the pristine enamel) and the transfer of the chemin de fer minutes register. The simplicity of the Reverso Tribute design codes – faceted appliqué hour-markers and Dauphine hands – places full value on the beauty of the decoration. Three Celebrated Artworks Complemented by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Vision of Art and Culture San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk. Chosen as the setting for the Homo Faber Biennial, the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, opposite St Mark’s Square, captivated Monet. In this view, painted as the sun set behind the island, the emphasis is on light, colours and reflections, reducing the buildings to a silhouette that anchors the composition. The miniaturised reproduction of Monet’s celebrated painting required approximately 70 hours of meticulous work. The dial features grand feu enamel in a shade of blue that perfectly complements the colours of the sky on the case-back painting. Echoing the geometric lines of the Reverso’s Art Deco design, the herringbone guilloché pattern comprises 120 separate lines, each of which requires three passages of the lathe, making 360 lines altogether – a meticulous task that takes eight hours to complete. The Grand Canal Venice. With a remarkable sense of depth and movement, this spellbinding view across the Grand Canal was painted in the afternoon. The church of Santa Maria della Salute appears to be floating on the water, its architectural details sublimated to the effect of the hazy light. The case-back that faithfully reproduces this masterwork required almost 70 hours of enamelling work. The wavy hand-guilloché pattern on the dial – which took eight hours of meticulous work to create – repeats the reflections on the water’s surface depicted in Monet’s painting. The visual effect of the waves is amplified by layers of translucent grand feu enamel in a soft shade of green that matches the water. The Doge’s Palace. Painted from a gondola in the middle of Grand Canal at 8.00am, this view of the Doge’s Palace beautifully evokes the effect of morning light on the water. “The palace…was just an excuse for painting the atmosphere,” Monet wrote to a friend. To reproduce the shimmering beauty of this painting, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s enameller worked for almost 70 hours in total. On the dial, the lozenge guilloché pattern creates constantly changing effects of light and shade as it is turned at different angles, echoing Monet’s fascination with the effect of light on water at different times of day. Amplified by rich layers of translucent blue grand feu enamel, the geometric pattern comprises 981 lines, each of which requires five passages of the lathe. With a total of 4,905 passages of hand-operated lathe altogether, this highly skilled work takes eight hours to complete. Offered in a limited edition of 10 pieces each, the Reverso Tribute Enamel ‘Venice Series’ is a fine tribute to the city that hosts the Homo Faber Biennial and a superb marriage of fine watchmaking with the decorative crafts of guillochage, enamelling and miniature painting. - Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation Donates $20,000 to Local Schools for Fall Community Projects
On Tuesday, Aug. 27, the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce (MBCC) Education Foundation, chaired by Bruce Gould, proudly awarded $20,000 to local Miami Beach public schools as part of a new initiative: Fall Community School Projects. This generous donation highlights the Foundation's unwavering commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and fostering a supportive and enriching environment within our local schools. Through this initiative, the Foundation continues to demonstrate its dedication to making a meaningful impact on the education and development of Miami Beach students. To personally deliver these contributions, Miami Beach Chamber leadership, including Richard Segal, chairman of MBCC and co-founder of RFB+Fisher Potter Hodas and co-manager of the Miami office; Vice Chairs Linsey Lovell and Alfredo J. Gonzalez; Education Foundation Chair Bruce Gould; and President & CEO Brittnie Bassant, visited the two Miami Beach public schools receiving the grant funds. The first $10,000 was awarded to North Beach Elementary for their impactful project, "Planting Trees for a Greater Community." With a focus on environmental stewardship, the school plans to plant Dade County Pines throughout the campus and surrounding areas, creating a greener, more vibrant environment for all. This project not only enhances the school’s landscape but also serves as an educational tool, as students will actively participate in planting and caring for the trees. By integrating this hands-on activity into their curriculum, North Beach Elementary is fostering teamwork, environmental consciousness, and a deeper connection to the natural world. Additionally, students will have the unique opportunity to take home and plant a Dade County Pine, further extending the project’s impact into the community. Another $10,000 was awarded to Miami Beach Fienberg Fisher K-8 for their innovative "Children of the World Park Enhancement Project." This initiative is designed to transform the school’s Children of the World Park into a sensory-rich, interactive, and educational space. By introducing a variety of butterfly and hummingbird-attracting plants, along with other enhancements, the project aims to provide students with opportunities for sensory enrichment, environmental education, and creative expression. The revamped park will serve as a vibrant outdoor classroom where students can explore and learn in a dynamic and stimulating environment, fostering their curiosity and creativity. "We are thrilled to support our local Miami Beach public schools through these impactful projects," said Bruce Gould, Chair of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation. "These initiatives are a testament to the power of community and the importance of investing in our future." President & CEO Brittnie Bassant echoed this sentiment, stating, "The Education Foundation’s work is the cornerstone of our mission to uplift and empower our public education system. Image by T.Den_Team / Adobestock Clip-in hair extensions are a popular hair enhancement tool amongst celebrities and beauty influencers. But the best part? They are easy to use and require less commitment compared to other hair extension types. The Magic of Clip-In Hair Extensions Clip-in hair extensions are easy-to-install, temporary hair extensions that you can "clip-in" to your natural hair. One of the benefits of these extensions is that you can easily place them at different parts of your head to achieve various styles. Therefore, if you are seeking a short-term hair transformation for a special event or just for a change of style, clip-ins are your best bet. Transforming Your Hairstyle The simplicity and versatility of clip-in hair extensions mean you can create different looks in minutes. Whether you want a long, luscious mane, a voluminous, bouncy bob, or a trendy hair colour without the damage of dye, there's a clip-in extension for you. You can easily go from a daytime to a nighttime look by adding more extensions for volume. Image by primipil / Adobestock Caring for Your Clip-In Extensions Despite the ease of use and style flexibility clip-in hair extensions offer, proper care is essential to ensure durability. Just like your natural hair, extensions require regular washing and conditioning. Brushing them gently before and after use helps keep them tangle-free. When washing your extensions, use a gentle shampoo and conditioner. Ensure you rinse them thoroughly to prevent product build-up, which can make them look dull and lifeless. Also, avoid using heat styling tools as much as possible to prevent damage. Are Clip-In Extensions for You? Clip-in extensions are perfect for anyone looking for instant hair transformation. If you are someone who loves to experiment with your hair look but shies away from the commitment of permanent extensions, clip-ins are a perfect solution. Whether you are a busy professional, a party-goer or someone looking for a quick hair fix before a meeting, clip-in hair extensions are a life-saver! Remember, like all good things, quality matters when it comes to clip-in hair extensions. Ensure you purchase from a reliable source to get the best out of your extensions. Image by Bidzilya / Adobestock Final Words Clip-in hair extensions are the secret to instant and effortless hair transformations. With the wide variety available today, there's no limit to the hairstyles you can recreate. So, why wait?
