Black Manti Dumplings A bold reinterpretation of Doya’s fan-favorite manti. This version envelops langoustine in silky squid ink dough, complemented by marash pepper and shaved fennel for a briny, aromatic finish. The Fisherman Stew Built on a white wine reduction and layered with mussels, grouper, prawns, and clams, this coastal riff on another Doya classic captures the essence of the sea in every bite. Crispy Branzino A reimagining of Doya’s signature whole fish, served with soutzouki crumble for texture, a fragrant mastic milk sauce, and a vibrant Aegean garden purée that ties the plate to its terroir. Susan Lacy & Jessica Levin: Billy's body of work as a musician has clearly had a cultural impact, and we wanted to explore the question of why this music has endured for generations, even though Billy hasn't released a song in 30 years.  Susan was approached by Tom Hanks' company Playtone. They had agreed to co-produce with Hazy Mills – Sean Hayes' company – but Playtone wanted Susan as the director based on her reputation as a masterful filmmaker of artists' stories, and they entrusted her to get to the heart of what makes Billy such a singular artist. Susan and I have been partners for over 25 years - I have produced countless films that she has directed. But we teamed up on this one due to the expansive nature of Billy's musical story, and we are glad we did! The film features exclusive and deeply personal interviews with Joel. What was your approach to building the kind of trust that would allow him to open up so candidly? Susan Lacy & Jessica Levin: Billy's every move has been covered by the press for over 50 years – and he has frequently deflected the deeper questions with humor and self-deprecation in a self-protective manner, which is totally understandable. But Susan built trust with Billy over the span of about 20 hours of interviews. Once he realized that we were doing a deep dive into the music and the artistry, he began to open up and trust that he needed to go deep himself.  It is important to note that Billy told Susan early on that she should "tell the truth," and we never veered from that principle.  This film was made independently without any input from Billy, and he didn't see the film until it was finished.  It was a very courageous thing to do for an artist who has not had a rosy relationship with the press throughout his career. Susan Lacy & Jessica Levin: There were so many surprises, but probably the biggest revelation was how intertwined Billy's songs are with his life – his songs are a road map to his personal journey. There is relatability and universality in his songs, but once you become aware of how autobiographical they are, it casts an entirely new light on the body of work. Take, for example, the song "Vienna", a beloved philosophical song that especially resonates with young people coming of age. The song has become so important to fans over the years that it is frequently requested in concerts. When we began digging into the meaning behind the song, we came to learn that it was deeply connected to Billy finding his father, who had been absent in Billy's life from the time Billy was eight until Billy sought him out in his 20s. After a good bit of probing by Susan, Billy finally admitted that the song was about the search for his father, whom he found in Vienna! So it turns out that Vienna is a deeply personal song, but the fact that it is still universal and relatable is a hallmark of Billy's musical genius. Another surprise was finding out about the story of Billy's family roots. His German Jewish family narrowly escaped the country during the Holocaust. Billy learned most of this from his half-brother, whom he didn't meet until he found his father. His half-brother, Alexander Joel, is a well-known opera conductor who also lives in Vienna. Billy and Alexander's shared musical DNA is apparent and runs deep in the Joel family. How did you decide what moments or chapters of his life to spotlight, given the scope of a six-decade career? Susan Lacy & Jessica Levin: As filmmakers, Susan and I are about discovering the soul of the artist. Susan started the American Masters series with the founding principle of telling artists' stories for posterity. And she has continued that work at HBO, telling revealing stories about Steven Spielberg and Jane Fonda, among others. And the approach to Billy Joel was no different. Seeking to understand the person behind the work – the personal stories that fueled the music and the musical influences that fed his musical direction throughout many decades of prolific songwriting. We seek to understand the heart of an artist by examining process and emotion. This film will give fans a new lens on his music and will seek to answer the question "Why Billy Joel?" for those who have not appreciated or understood his artistry. Joel's music must be woven intricately into storytelling. How did you approach using his songs to reflect or deepen the emotional arc of the film? Susan Lacy & Jessica Levin: Billy Joel's catalog is deeply intertwined with his life, and we felt that should be reflected in the storytelling. Many songs are ripped from the pages of his life with lyrics that tell the story of the arc of his journey. We knew we wanted to use Billy's music to underscore the entire film, and the depth and breadth of his catalog enabled us to do that. Billy has 121 songs in his catalog, and we are proud to say that there are over 110 songs in the film.  His music has a wide variety of influences  — Broadway, film, jazz, classical, and the American Songbook, in addition to blues and rock n roll, but classical music is probably his strongest foundational influence. We used many of Billy's classical compositions to underscore the film as well.  And we discovered what a learned classical musician he is – with a solid understanding of composition, structure, harmony, etc., and that has informed his music. If there is one composer he idolizes above all others, it is Beethoven! That cocktail of influences infuses his music with a cinematic quality that lends itself to underscoring not just the stories of his songs but the emotional rollercoaster of his personal life as well.  Photo Courtesy of Art Maillett/Sony Music Archives/HBO You included never-before-seen footage and performances. Can you share the story behind uncovering one of those clips? Susan Lacy & Jessica Levin: Because Billy has lived his life in the public eye for so many years, there is a treasure of archives recording Billy's evolution as an artist. But one piece of footage that was revelatory and has never been seen before was shot on the day he signed at Columbia Records, June 26, 1973. It is a very raw and emotional performance of the song Piano Man —  a very young Billy alone at the piano singing from his heart.  At that time, he had recently written the song, and the power of his connection to the piano is palpable in the footage.  We used this footage toward the end of the film to remind our audience where Billy started his career, as a young, vulnerable songwriter who had no idea where the piano would take him. Joel has performed in Miami many times over the years, and once owned a home on La Gorce Island. Did the city or any of his time here come up in your research? Susan Lacy & Jessica Levin: Billy spends most of his time in Florida now! He still owns a home in Long Island, and those will always be where his roots are, but as he sings in the song "Miami 2017",  "But that was so many years ago…before we all lived here in Florida". And that came true for Billy. He has a long history of performances in the state, including one in Orlando a couple of years ago, where the temperature dropped in the 40s!  The title And So It Goes  is not only a poignant song but also a statement. What did it come to mean for you in the context of his life? Susan Lacy & Jessica Levin: The song And So It Goes resonated with Susan early on, and she knew she wanted it as the title of the film. The song very much encapsulates Billy's life philosophy. So much has happened to this man – his tale is truly Shakespearean in its unfolding, and Billy has embraced the philosophy of living with mistakes and missteps – in life and in love – and being able to accept these moments and move on.  He is resilient and a fighter. He understands that emotional lows will come, but there are also triumphs and beautiful moments that come into your life that you must appreciate.  He is a romantic at heart and love will always hold an important place in his life and his music, and many of his most important songs have reflected that. Billy Joel's music has a deep emotional resonance for so many people. What do you hope audiences will take away about the man behind the piano after watching this film? Susan Lacy & Jessica Levin: We hope audiences will have a new understanding of Billy Joel's music by understanding where the emotions and inspirations came from. Having insight into Billy's journey and motivations enables you to hear the music in an entirely new way – on a deeper level – and we hope audiences will appreciate the many aspects of this complex man through his music. Susan Lacy & Jessica Levin: Billy is more than the hits – more than "Uptown Girl", "Piano Man" or "We Didn't Start the Fire" (although we love those songs!).  He is a man of deep complexity and emotion. As his stepson Sean says in Part One – "If he could communicate about feelings, I don't know whether he would be able to create the songs and the feelings that they all convey. And that's where I have to look and go, alright, whatever he didn't do, whatever his shortcomings were, he did do that. And that's powerful. That moves people". We feel this statement underscores the power of Billy's body of work. What's your favorite part about the city of Miami?  Susan Lacy & Jessica Levin: Over the years, Miami has transformed into a cultural mecca with many cultural influences on display throughout the city. For us, the music and art take center stage, along with the incredible food and the cosmopolitan resorts that dot the beautiful shoreline. Diversity takes center stage in Miami! In the weeks leading up to June 16, 2023, when I attended the Pittsburgh leg of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour , the online chatter about the 33-year-old singer had become draining. Scott Eisen/TAS23 via Getty Images The internet was ablaze with rumors about Swift dating Matty Healy , the lead singer of the English pop-rock band The 1975. Some Swifties – the term used for diehard Taylor Swift fans – berated the pop superstar for dating Healy, who’d become mired in controversy for appearing on a podcast whose hosts made racist comments about the rapper Ice Spice . As the Pittsburgh leg of the tour approached, I wondered if I were about to dive headfirst into an angry mob of tens of thousands of Swifties. On the day of the show, Acrisure Stadium was mobbed with 72,000 people, but the Swifties in attendance were far from angry. In that moment we became deeply connected by our shared love and admiration for Swift’s music. Sociologist Emile Durkheim described this phenomenon as “ collective effervescence ,” the unique surge in feeling when large groups of people come together for a shared purpose. “It was rare, I was there, I was there,” Swift belted out during “ All Too Well .” I was there, too, as life events touched by Swift flashed by: sitting at my first desktop computer as a teenager in Kathmandu, Nepal, replaying “Love Story” on LimeWire; my first week in the U.S., during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, when Kanye West infamously interrupted Swift ; how Swift’s eighth studio album, “ Folklore ,” brought me back to life after it seemed as if the world were on the verge of imploding in 2020. Collective delusion The Eras Tour was not my first experience of collective effervescence. Nor was it the first time I felt such a strong disconnect between the online and offline worlds. Right before the pandemic began, there was the painfully quiet fizzling out of the Bernie 2020 movement . As a volunteer for that campaign, I had the remarkable experience of connecting with other Americans who wanted a Bernie Sanders presidency. I especially appreciated how this role connected me to the people who make up the Nepali diaspora in the U.S. We hoped to improve our immigrant experiences, whether it involved no longer fearing the deportation of loved ones or easier access to health care . But then repeated news cycles about “ toxic Bernie Bros ” seemed to drain the movement’s momentum. Mainstream media outlets reported that Sanders’ base was made up of white male cyberbullies . Negative tweets had been amplified, and the words and behaviors of a few Sanders supporters all of a sudden were being portrayed as representative of an entire movement. The contrast between what was being said online versus my own experiences was jarring: Here I was working to find transportation for 80-year-old Nepali grandmas who didn’t speak English but wanted to vote for Sanders. Post-election analysis would show that the Bernie Bro trope was entirely constructed ; there was no evidence to show that young white men made up a majority of Sanders’ supporters. The movement, in fact, consisted of a diverse coalition of people from marginalized races and genders . Supporters of Sen. Brown/AFP via Getty Images A vocal minority sets the agenda Online narratives distort real life more often than you might realize. Research consistently shows that a small minority of people who have social media accounts post the vast majority of content. In what’s termed the “ 90-9-1 rule ,” 90% of users on these websites only “lurk” or read content, 9% of the users reply or re-post with occasional new contributions, and only 1% of the users frequently create new content. Pioneered by Jakob Neilson, the 90-9-1 rule is one of many theories within internet studies that describe participation rates, and different scholars find support for different variations of this rule. Reddit, for example, has over 1 billion monthly active users, but according to a 2017 conference paper, an overwhelming majority of Reddit users are lurkers . X, the website and app formerly known as Twitter, had around 350 million users as of 2023; however, research from 2019 found that 75% of its users were lurkers . In other words, most of the discussions happening on websites like Reddit and Twitter come from a vocal minority of users – whose posts are then curated and boosted by algorithms . Nonetheless, in the past decade, the news media have increasingly constructed narratives about collective reality based on what happens in these websites. Of course, toxic online behavior exists in all online communities. But it represents the words of a smaller minority of users within the already small minority of people who post content online. Media narratives that emphasize certain groups as toxic based on online behavior – whether they are describing fandom or politics – fall into the trap of confusing the internet with real life. In the weeks when Swift was dating Healy, a vocal minority of Swifties came head-to-head with a vocal minority of Healy’s defenders . Then the celebrity pair ended their relationship, and collective attention moved on from that topic almost immediately. Several weeks of nonstop debate, attacks and hand-wringing ended up being utterly meaningless – except to social media companies that converted this brief obsession into clicks, engagement and ad revenue. My forthcoming book, “ Attention and Alienation ,” brings renewed focus to an increasingly demystified phenomenon: The online attention economy maximizes profits by designing algorithms that boost engagement , particularly by promoting negativity and outrage. Oligarchy of the ‘extremely online’ Sometimes the consequences of mistaking the internet for real life are dire. Take reproductive health. Online rage about the Supreme Court’s decisions to overturn Roe. v. Wade peaked within a few days and people moved on to different topics. Today, reports about reproductive health care take up very little news media space compared with garden-variety trending topics like “Barbenheimer” – the double blockbuster release of the movies “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” on July 21, 2023. In the real world, many people continue to suffer from lack of access to lifesaving reproductive health care across the U.S. , while the online chattering class celebrates the radical feminism of the “Barbie” movie . Perhaps it’s time to sideline social media and the internet when evaluating the nature of our collective reality. Reality exists outside of our devices, whereas social media algorithms push whatever keeps us tethered to the screen. There is little evidence to support the idea that online discourse represents collective experiences . That might be easier said than done: 94% of journalists say they use social media for their jobs. But as an internet researcher – and Taylor Swift fan – I am hopeful that experiences like the Eras Tour will wake up more people to the fact that human beings are more united than social media algorithms would have us believe. Ezio’s Steakhouse, the upscale Italian-inspired concept from New York restaurant visionaries Brandon Hoy and Chef Carlo Mirarchi, will open its first brick-and-mortar location at  Lefferts ’ newly completed luxury condominium tower, 72 Park , in North Beach (NoBe), Miami Beach, in late fall 2025. After months of speculation and economic whiplash, the Federal Reserve has finally kicked off a long-anticipated pivot, slashing interest rates by 50 basis points. For the commercial real estate (CRE) scene in Miami, that move lands with a mix of hope, caution, and opportunity. The city’s market, known for its dynamic growth and heavy investor interest, now finds itself recalibrating as financing conditions begin to shift. Let’s be clear, this rate cut doesn’t instantly unlock the gates to a flood of deals. But it sends a strong signal: the Fed is shifting from a restrictive to a more accommodative stance. For local CRE stakeholders who’ve been waiting on the sidelines, this may be the cue to get back in the game. Sentiment, after all, is a powerful force in real estate. And in Miami, a market already flush with international capital and booming sectors like retail and   hospitality , even a hint of monetary relief carries weight. That said, the fundamentals still matter. Inflation data remains mixed, and the cost of capital, while improving, is still high by historical standards. The Fed’s move has more of a psychological effect right now, and lowering financing rates may take time to fully filter into the lending environment. That means deals still need to pencil out under cautious assumptions. For many investors and lenders,   commercial valuation services  have become essential in navigating this changing landscape, offering clarity on income projections and exit strategies as the market resets. Miami’s real estate identity is evolving. While traditional office spaces have cooled, there’s growing demand for asset classes like medical office, student housing, and mixed-use developments. These categories, often tied to population growth and infrastructure expansion, continue to attract capital. The Brightline connection between Miami and Orlando, for instance, is one piece of the bigger puzzle reshaping regional value. But not all sectors are enjoying the same optimism. The office market is still under pressure. Distressed assets are likely to surface more in 2024, particularly as a wave of maturing debt approaches. Nationally, more than $180 billion in CRE debt is set to come due this year. In Miami, lenders may take a harder stance compared to the soft approach of 2023, especially as the economic picture grows more predictable. For some properties, extensions and modifications won’t be enough. Looking ahead, much of the action is expected to pick up in late 2024 and beyond. If the   Fed continues cutting rates  in the coming policy meetings, momentum could build heading into 2025. Miami, with its high visibility and active development pipeline, will likely be a top target for reinvigorated investment flows. For now, the Fed’s move is more of a green light than a green wave. State legislators appear to be leaving the future of online gambling up in the air for millions of Floridians.  Although crypto casinos are not licensed or approved by the state, many Floridians get around the restrictions by playing at some of the top ranked casinos with no registration  online. These platforms tend to offer bigger payouts and wider gaming selection from which to choose from. If online gambling were to get Tallahassee approval, it could generate millions or even billions of dollars in revenue.  Earlier this year, a couple of proposals started to make their way through the state’s legislature.  Bill HB593 was intended to not only properly legalise online betting and casinos, but also to give control of them to the Seminole Tribe of Florida.  The Seminoles currently run six of Florida’s casinos , which are situated in Okeechobee, Immokalee, Tampa, Coconut Creek, and two in Hollywood.  The tribe also ran the Seminole Casino Big Cypress near Clewiston, which closed earlier this decade.  However, the bill ran into trouble and died in committee last month.  A similar fate befell Bill S1404. This piece of legislation would have clarified what members of the state’s Gaming Control Commission could and could not do during their time in office, as well as establishing guidelines for the recruitment of commission members. The bill would also have, potentially, paved the way for Seminole management of online gambling in the state.  Again, though, it failed to gain traction and died last month, awaiting a reference review.  With online gambling still something of a grey area for Floridians, one of the state’s physical casinos is urging people not to be fooled by fraudulent online adverts.  Ads are popping up across the internet claiming to be from the Miccosukee Casino & Resort in Miami.  They say that people can gamble online with the casino, which is owned and run by the Miccosukee tribe, but this is not the case.  In a statement, Brad Rhines, the Casino’s general manager, said: “These fake advertisements are misleading and potentially harmful to consumers. “Protecting the integrity of our brand and the trust of our guests is a top priority. We want to be clear — Miccosukee Casino & Resort does not operate any online gambling platforms.” Meanwhile, the state’s authorities are cracking down on illegal gambling activities.  In Lady Lake, near Orlando, the Il Villagio senior entertainment center has been shut down following a police raid.  Law enforcement authorities carried out a bust earlier this month, seizing 190 slot machines and confiscating $349,000 in cash.  The facility’s owner, Rima Rey, has been arrested on suspicion of money laundering and keeping a gambling house.  Similarly, a raid on the Orioles bar in Okeechobee saw six slot machines seized as part of a months-long investigation.  The local Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office’s Narcotics Task Force and the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) carried out the bust.  The sheriff’s office claimed that the bar’s Facebook page showed evidence of patrons not only taking part in unlawful games, but also cashing in their winnings with vouchers.  This month’s anti-illegal gambling raids come after similar operations in May.  During that month, officers from across Florida seized more than 100 illegal and unlicensed slot machines from bars and gas stations in Okeechobee, DeLand, Dade City, and Daytona Beach.  One bust, in Dolly’s Old Town Tavern in DeLand, saw 14 slot machines and $8,000 seized, while another, at Play For Keeps, Dade City, led to 24 machines and $35,000 in cash taken by law enforcement officers.  In a statement , FGCC acting executive director Ross Marshman said: “The Commission is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with our law enforcement partners as we collaboratively tackle illegal gaming throughout our state.” By ML Staff.
