Bonaire feels different from the moment you arrive. Many Miami travelers may not know much about Bonaire, but this relatively under-the-radar Caribbean island quickly proves that its low profile is part of its appeal. The Dutch Caribbean island is less about crowded beaches and nightlife and more about nature, water and the freedom to explore at your own pace. Covering roughly 114 square miles, Bonaire combines cactus-covered hills, salt flats, mangrove channels and rugged volcanic coastline with some of the Caribbean's most accessible underwater scenery. For Miami travelers, getting there is surprisingly easy. American Airlines operates nonstop flights from Miami International Airport to Flamingo International Airport in roughly three hours. From the airport, it is only a short drive to Delfins Beach Resort Bonaire, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, where you can trade the airport terminal for a beach palapa and, if your timing is right, a sunset over the Caribbean. Delfins Beach Resort is designed around Bonaire's greatest attraction: the sea. The resort sits directly on the waterfront, with a private beach, sunbeds and a pier that provides easy access for swimming, snorkeling and diving. Two magnesium swimming pools offer an alternative when you want to stay above the water, including Bonaire's only Olympic-size pool. But the real draw for divers is the resort's partnership with Dive Friends Bonaire, which operates an on-site PADI 5-Star IDC Dive Center. Below the surface, Bonaire's marine environment is just as impressive. The waters surrounding the island are protected as part of the Bonaire National Marine Park, with hundreds of fish species and dozens of coral species inhabiting the reefs. Beyond the Reef You don't have to be a diver to appreciate Bonaire's relationship with the ocean. A short boat ride takes you to Klein Bonaire, an uninhabited island known for its white-sand beaches, clear water and protected marine environment. On Bonaire's east coast, Lac Bay offers a completely different experience, with mangroves to explore by kayak and famously strong conditions for windsurfing. Back on land, guests can explore independently with a Suzuki Jimny rental arranged directly through Delfins Beach Resort. This makes it easy to visit Washington Slagbaai National Park, where cactus-filled landscapes, rugged coastline and wildlife create a dramatic contrast with the resort's beachfront setting. Guests can also book a Stay & Drive package, which includes the vehicle as part of their stay. Flamingo sightings are another Bonaire highlight, while the island's constant trade winds have inspired wonderfully unconventional activities, including landsailing in a wind-powered blokart. For an experience that feels almost otherworldly, plan a night dive around the full moon. On several nights following a full moon, bioluminescent ostracods can create tiny flashes of light underwater, producing a natural nighttime display for divers lucky enough to catch it.
