- International Exhibition The Art of Banksy: "Without Limits" Opens in Miami
Fans of the acclaimed and provocative British artist Banksy can now experience his iconic works up close as The Art of Banksy: “Without Limits” exhibition opens in Miami at Ice Palace Studios on January 14, 2022, as part of its North American debut. The exhibition – custom-built to fit the venue – includes several experiential areas and more than 155 of the artist’s works such as certified originals, prints, photos, lithographs, sculptures, murals, and video mapping installations created only for this tour. Tickets start at $27.20 and are available through Feverup.com/Miami and ArtOfBanksy.com. The exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays and Wednesdays through Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Building upon the incredible success of The Art of Banksy: “Without Limits” in Europe, the Middle East, Australia and Asia, the exhibition celebrated its U.S. premiere in Atlanta in September 2021. Due to popular demand, the show in Atlanta was extended. Miami is the second city on the national tour where the exhibition will be showcased for a limited time, followed by Charlotte, North Carolina, and other cities to be announced later this year. To date over 1.2 million people have visited the exhibition around the world. Regarded as one of the most valuable and talked about artists of our time, Banksy’s popularity cannot be denied. The exhibition The Art of Banksy: “Without Limits” is presented by eventS and SEE Global Entertainment. More than 20 of Banksy’s works are carefully reproduced with his stencil technique especially for the exhibition, including his March 2021 creation “Escape” originally appearing on England’s closed Reading Prison, and “Pulp Fiction” featuring likenesses of the film’s stars Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta pointing bananas in place of pistols. The exhibit also features an astounding reproduction of a subway station from the London Underground, which immerses visitors in the world of Banksy's street art. In addition, visitors can view a mural installation by a renowned creative team, which authentically brings the spirit of street art to an indoor exhibit. A video documentary gives visitors insights into Banksy’s life and work, all presented in a unique setting. The show promises – and delivers – a genuinely impressive experience and is a “must see” to celebrate or learn about his art. Other highlights include “Dismaland” installations from Banksy’s 2015 pop-up Bemusement Park, prints of “Flower Thrower” and “Kissing Coppers,” and the sculpture “Death of a Phone Booth.” Other surprises include a section dedicated to Banksy’s activism related to immigrants and an “infinity room” addressing politics. Visitors are also invited to join the spirit of Banksy's activism by spray painting their own T-shirt with a $2 donation to the M.V. Louise Michel organization. “Visitors will find conversation starters around every corner of this exhibition as Banksy is an exciting and compelling artist we delight in sharing with the public for the first time in Miami,” said Martin Biallas, CEO of SEE Global Entertainment. “Some consider Banksy a prankster and others regard him an artistic genius – no matter one’s perspective, worldwide it’s clear that everyone agrees Banksy’s popularity and influence cannot be denied.” “Banksy has a unique power to express strong political statements with poetry, energy and humor and an unnerving ability to get to the heart of the subject matter,” added Biallas. “Any location that features Banksy’s work becomes the place to see, and in the U.S. that place is Miami.” The founder of the exhibition, Kemal Gurkaynak, who is based outside the U.S. and considers himself a Banksy advocate, also affirms the incredible ability Banksy has to inspire conversation. “The Art of Banksy: ’Without Limits’ is not an exhibition but a show with a philosophy as Banksy loves to provoke, shock and even disturb society,” said Gurkaynak. “He does it with humor and poetry indeed. Banksy has the unique ability to express through his works some truths that most people don’t have the courage to say out loud. And, nowadays, we need to be sincere, empathetic and caring to one another more than ever. This is what Banksy’s art does: it has the power to unite people, ideas, values that can change the world for the better. Through The Art of Banksy: ‘Without Limits’ our mission is to present the truth about Bansky’s art and to carry his powerful message into the world.” The Art of Banksy: “Without Limits” successfully exhibited in multiple international cities including Istanbul, Amsterdam, Melbourne, Antwerp, Berlin, Bucharest, Cluj, Budapest, Riyadh, Vienna, Warsaw, Seoul and Atlanta. - Saje Nicole: I Aspire to Inspire
I am Saje Nicole, a Haitian American model who shuttles between Los Angeles and Miami. Many may not know this, but Miami is where I started modeling. I came here at the age of three with my mother and father (both from Haiti) looking for a better life. My mother always wanted me to be a nurse or a doctor, but I had something else in mind. Growing up, I always knew I wanted to model, but it was hard to find “my place.” I did not necessarily look like a successful model, but all I needed was patience. I always tell people, yes, I lived in Fort Lauderdale, but Miami is where I grew up. Miami is where I found my first agency, where I walked the runway for the first time, and where I worked on my first film set. Some of them were huge projects, others were just shows, but in my mind they all led me to bigger opportunities. In July 2020, I walked in a Miami Swim week show for the first time. That same year, I also auditioned for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit. And little did I know, this was the moment I had been waiting for. I filmed my audition video on Miami Beach with my iPhone, tripod and lapel mic. I edited it at home, which took me all day, and uploaded it the very next day! Since then, I have made it to the finals of Sports Illustrated Swim Search, shot with the infamous Yutsai, met the entire team at Sports Illustrated, walked with them at Miami Swim Week my sophomore year, and last but not least, I am featured in this year’s Most ICONIC issue of Sports Illustrated History, with three black women on the cover! I accomplished all of this because I was extremely determined and persistent. All traits I learned growing up in Miami. Yes, we know how to have a good time, we know how to keep the spirits high and the music jumping, but there is another side to Miami. A side that is full of string pullers and trailblazers. I’d like to call it the best of both worlds. So thank you, Miami. For raising me and showing me how to take things easy and have fun, but also how to keep the job safe and make my city proud. That’s the real Miami Living. - An Appetizing Chicken Tortilla Soup
A silky purée of vegetables, tortillas and spices, this chicken tortilla soup is hearty enough to serve as a meal. Photo by Alexandra Grablewski (Chronicle Books, 2018) Whenever we visit my parents in Longboat Key, Florida, we spend a lot of time hanging out at St. Armands Circle. It’s the kind of place where you stroll in and out of boutiques, people-watch at sidewalk cafés, walk around with drippy ice cream cones, and ask every stranger with a dog if your children can pet it. One of our favorite restaurants there is Tommy Bahama. The food’s always good, and we love sitting around a big round table under gently spinning wicker fans, listening to a one-man band play endless Jimmy Buffet tunes. We all have our favorite dishes at Tommy’s but one thing everyone agrees on is the chicken tortilla soup, made from puréed vegetables and corn tortillas. This is my version — lightened up a bit from the original but just as satisfying. (Photo above by Alexandra Grablewski, Chronicle Books 2018) WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE CHICKEN TORTILLA SOUP HOW TO MAKE CHICKEN TORTILLA SOUP Begin by heating the oil and butter in a large soup pot over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, and green pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until tender and just starting to brown, about 15 minutes. (Turn the heat to medium-low if the mixture is browning too quickly.) Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Add the chicken broth, cut tortillas, cumin, chili powder, salt, and cayenne. Bring to a boil, then turn the heat down to low and simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes. Off the heat, then use a handheld immersion blender to purée the soup until completely smooth. If you don’t have a hand-held blender, let the soup cool slightly and use a standard blender to purée in batches. Be sure to remove the center knob on the blender top and cover with a dish towel to avoid splatters. Taste and adjust seasoning, if necessary. Stir in the chicken, if using, then ladle the soup into bowls and serve with optional additions. Enjoy! Chicken Tortilla Soup By Jennifer Segal, inspired by Tommy Bahama Tropical Café A silky purée of vegetables, tortillas and spices, this chicken tortilla soup is hearty enough to serve as a meal. Servings: 6 INGREDIENTS For soup 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 medium yellow onions, roughly chopped (about 2-1/2 cups) 4 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced into quarters 1 green bell pepper, seeded and roughly chopped 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 quarts (8 cups) low-sodium chicken broth (best quality such as Swanson) 6 small (6-inch) corn tortillas, cut into small pieces 1 tablespoon ground cumin 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper Optional additions 2 cooked skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite sized pieces (see note) Sour cream Crushed tortilla chips Chopped fresh cilantro 1-2 avocados, peeled, pitted and sliced INSTRUCTIONS In a large pot, heat the oil and butter over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, and green pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender and just starting to brown, about 15 minutes. (Turn the heat to medium-low if the mixture is browning too quickly.) Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Add the chicken broth, cut tortillas, cumin, chili powder, salt, and cayenne and bring to a boil. Turn the heat down to low and simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat, then use a handheld immersion blender to purée the soup until completely smooth. (Alternatively, let the soup cool slightly and use a blender to purée in batches. Be sure to remove the center knob on the blender top and cover with a dish towel to avoid splatters.) Taste and adjust seasoning, if necessary. Stir in the chicken, if using, then ladle the soup into bowls and serve with optional additions. Note: I usually use leftover or rotisserie chicken for this soup, but if you want to cook the chicken from scratch, you’ll need two bone‑in chicken breasts. Preheat the oven to 425°F and set an oven rack in the middle position. Place the chicken breasts on an aluminum foil–lined baking sheet, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. Let cool, then pull the meat off the bone and cut into bite-sized pieces. Freezer-Friendly Instructions: The soup can be frozen for up to 3 months. Defrost the soup in the refrigerator for 12 hours and then reheat it on the stovetop over medium heat until hot. This soup will also keep nicely in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. (If refrigerated or frozen, the soup will thicken up quite a bit, so add a bit of water or chicken broth while reheating to thin it out as necessary.)
