- Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belén
Located just a short drive from San José’s Juan Santamaría International Airport, the Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belén combines history, culture, and modern luxury in a unique setting. Set on a former coffee plantation, the hotel seamlessly blends colonial-era architecture with contemporary comforts, making it an excellent base for travelers visiting Costa Rica for both business and leisure. One highlight during my stay was the authentic, friendly staff who made me feel completely at home. Their warm hospitality gave the entire property a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. History The history of Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belén is deeply rooted in Costa Rica’s coffee trade. The property was established by Sebastián de Zamora in the 19th century as a coffee and tobacco plantation. The region was crucial in Costa Rica’s rise as a major coffee exporter, with beans being sent to Europe via the port of Puntarenas. Photo by Karnav, Adobe Stock Guests can still see remnants of the past throughout the property, including curated original artifacts like traditional oxcarts that were once used to transport coffee beans—one of which is beautifully displayed in the lobby, now filled with vibrant flowers. Additionally, several original pieces are seamlessly incorporated into the hotel’s design, such as stable wooden doors and an antique bed that has been creatively repurposed into a table, among other unique touches. Accommodations The hotel offers 289 rooms and 10 suites, all designed to provide a modern, comfortable experience while still evoking the charm of a traditional Costa Rican hacienda. The room I stayed in featured rich wooden furnishings, soft beige and yellow tones, and large windows with views of the surrounding mountains, the golf course, and the lush grounds of the property. Updated amenities such as flat-screen TVs, high-speed internet, mini-fridges, and luxury bedding ensure guests feel right at home. Each room also includes several glass bottles of water, which guests can refill using the hotel’s filtered water stations—a thoughtful initiative aimed at reducing single-use plastic. Worth mentioning is that Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belén also caters to families and business travelers, offering family-friendly rooms and flexible configurations for group stays. Dining Dining at the Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belén offers a variety of local and international flavors. Hacienda Kitchen , the hotel’s signature restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a view of the golf course. The menu features traditional Costa Rican dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, offering an authentic taste of the region. A highlight is the hotel’s on-site organic garden, which grows herbs, strawberries, and star fruit that are often used in the dishes, enhancing the farm-to-table experience. For a more refined dining option, La Isabela Steakhouse offers expertly prepared steaks, a curated wine list, and an intimate atmosphere. During my visit, I enjoyed a unique tasting menu paired with wine painting. The Josper oven, using natural charcoal, imparts a rich, smoky flavor to the steak, making it one of the most memorable meals I’ve had. If you’re looking for something more casual, Casa del Café serves Costa Rican coffee, pastries, and light meals 24 hours a day. I had a special coffee tasting with Orgaikos Coffee , which offers a chance to experience organic coffee and learn about sustainable farming. For a change of pace, La Castilla offers Asian-fusion cuisine and exotic cocktails with stunning views from its outdoor terrace. Finally, Bar 10 combines a sports bar atmosphere with elevated dining, where guests can enjoy American favorites and cocktails while watching live games. Wellness & Recreation During my stay, I experienced Kuö Spa’s Coffee Scrub Treatment , which uses coffee from local vendors, including the hotel’s plantation. The exfoliation left my skin refreshed and soft. Inspired by the Cabécar culture, the spa incorporates natural elements like water, earth, sun, and moon. With 11 treatment rooms, including private suites with Jacuzzis overlooking the coffee fields, the spa offers a peaceful, relaxing setting. For those staying active, the hotel features a fully equipped fitness center, two outdoor pools, a golf driving range, and tennis courts. The golf course provides a serene environment for both casual and seasoned golfers. Winding paths throughout the grounds are perfect for morning walks. Along the way, I discovered thriving coffee plants, trees, and a charming butterfly garden with colorful blooms that attract butterflies, adding to the hotel’s natural beauty. Sustainability The hotel takes sustainability seriously, with several environmental initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. In 2021, the Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belén became the first Marriott property in Latin America to install a solar-powered microgrid system. The solar panels generate energy to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 20.8 tons annually. Beyond energy efficiency, the hotel is actively involved in the local community through its Serve 360 initiative, which supports local projects and charitable organizations like the Food Bank of Costa Rica and the Roblealto Association. They also lead environmental programs, such as the recycling of plastic bottle caps to create accessible beach paths for people with disabilities, which demonstrates the hotel’s ongoing commitment to sustainability. Meetings & Events The hotel offers over 14,000 square feet of meeting space and 28 flexible rooms for business and social events. The Juan Vázquez de Coronado ballroom accommodates up to 1,000 guests, and the Central Courtyard is perfect for outdoor gatherings. Comprehensive event services, including planning, catering, and audiovisual support, are available. The on-site chapel, the first building on the property, provides a charming and historic setting for weddings. Experienced staff are available to assist with both business and wedding planning. - Discovering the Hidden Gems of San José Costa Rica
Tucked in the heart of Central America, San José, Costa Rica’s vibrant capital, is often seen as a jumping-off point for jungle treks, Pacific beaches, and cloud forests. But those who take the time to explore the city itself are rewarded with a rich tapestry of culture, history, and creativity. Beyond the bustling boulevards and colonial facades lie hidden gems that offer a more intimate, authentic experience of the capital’s soul. From artistic enclaves to serene green spaces, San José is filled with surprises waiting to be uncovered. Photo by Cesar Badilla, Unsplash A Brief History Founded in the early 18th century, San José began as a small village with no formal government, which made it unique among Latin American capitals. It wasn’t until 1823 that it officially became the capital of Costa Rica, chosen for its central location. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the city grew rapidly, fueled by the coffee boom that brought wealth and European influence, especially in its architecture and arts. Today, San José stands as a testament to Costa Rica’s democratic legacy, artistic traditions, and dynamic modernization. Photo by Quang Nguyen, Unsplash NOTABLE VISITS Here is a list of my favorite sites of San José worth visiting: Barrio Amón One of San José’s oldest neighborhoods, Barrio Amón is a haven for architecture lovers and art enthusiasts. Its streets are lined with beautifully preserved Victorian and Art Deco buildings, many of which have been transformed into cafes, boutique hotels, and art galleries. Don’t miss a visit to Galería Talentum, where local artists showcase contemporary Costa Rican art in a relaxed, welcoming space. Spirogyra Butterfly Garden Tucked away in the bustling neighborhood of Barrio Tournón, this tranquil oasis offers a break from the city’s energy. The Spirogyra Butterfly Garden is home to hundreds of colorful butterflies and lush tropical plants, just a short walk from downtown. It’s a great place to unwind and learn about Costa Rica’s biodiversity without leaving the city. Mercado Escalante A culinary hub hidden in the eastern part of San José, Barrio Escalante is known for its trendy food scene. Mercado Escalante and Calle 33 are home to a collective of gourmet restaurants and craft breweries, offering everything from Costa Rican fusion to international cuisine. The ambiance is lively yet relaxed, perfect for an evening stroll and bite. Museo de Jade While not entirely hidden, the Jade Museum is often overlooked by tourists in favor of more famous sites. However, its modern design and impressive collection of pre-Columbian artifacts make it a must-visit. With the world’s largest collection of American jade, the museum offers a glimpse into the spiritual and artistic life of Costa Rica’s indigenous cultures. Parque Nacional & Parque España Skip the usual parks and head to these adjacent green spaces in the heart of San José. Parque Nacional features monuments to Costa Rican independence and shaded walkways, while Parque España offers iron sculptures and lush gardens. These parks are less touristy and more frequented by locals—a great place to feel the city’s rhythm. Casa del Cuño Located near the Antigua Aduana, Casa del Cuño is a hidden cultural gem that hosts pop-up markets, art exhibitions, and craft fairs. This revitalized colonial-era building often features work from young designers and artisans, making it an ideal stop for unique souvenirs and handmade gifts. Looking for a place to stay in San Jose? We recommend Marriott Hotel, Hacienda Belén . By Markin Abras.
- How Car Finance Brokers Help You Find the Best Deals
The process of selecting finance options becomes difficult because of high-pressure situations at dealerships. The role of car finance brokers helps customers through this process. The intermediaries act as an independent resource for buyers by accessing multiple lenders to find financing rates which match both your financial capacity and credit standing. The broad network of their relationships turns demanding searches into personally adjusted solutions. Image by Alex P Access to a Broader Lending Network The dealership usually works with particular finance providers which will limit your selection. Brokers have access to multiple industry lenders who choose not to work directly with the public. The expanded range of lenders through brokers allows you to conduct assessments that would not be possible during single-lender applications. Your options increase your ability to obtain better interest rates in combination with flexible payment conditions. Tailored Deals for Diverse Credit Profiles Every lender operates with different credit score requirements since they provide different financial solutions to their clients. Banks have two different approaches to lending because they either prefer customers without credit issues or work specifically with borrowers who made mistakes in the past. A broker possesses profound knowledge about the credit scoring system. The broker service connects your financial profile to suitable lenders who will approve your application request while avoiding time-consuming procedures and credit score damage from excessive hard checks. Negotiation Power You Can Leverage Lenders know that brokers bring in business consistently. This relationship gives brokers negotiating leverage that individual applicants can’t replicate. Whether it’s reducing the APR or adjusting the repayment period to better suit your needs, a broker can push for more favourable terms. Their incentive is aligned with yours—they don’t get paid unless you get approved, and their goal is to place you with a deal you’ll accept. Save Time Without Cutting Corners Sifting through application forms, checking eligibility criteria, and comparing repayment terms manually is time-consuming. A broker streamlines the process. You provide your information once, and they handle the legwork from there. The result is a curated shortlist of offers, each one aligned with your financial parameters. Instead of guessing, you’re choosing confidently from vetted options. Clear Communication Without the Jargon Finance paperwork is rarely user-friendly. Brokers bridge the gap between complex terms and clear explanations. They translate technical wording into plain advice, ensuring you understand what you're agreeing to before signing anything. Transparency builds trust, and good brokers keep communication consistent from enquiry to final agreement. Image by Antoni Shkraba Studio Support Beyond the Deal The service doesn’t always stop once you’ve signed the dotted line. Many brokers remain available to answer questions, liaise with lenders on your behalf, and even assist if you're considering refinancing down the line. This ongoing support adds value well beyond initial savings. No Obligation to Accept The dealership usually works with particular finance providers which will limit your selection. Brokers have access to multiple industry lenders who choose not to work directly with the public. The expanded range of lenders through brokers allows you to conduct assessments that would not be possible during single-lender applications. Your options increase your ability to obtain better interest rates in combination with flexible payment conditions. A Smarter Way to Finance Getting car finance involves more than monetary considerations because it requires selecting an option that matches your lifestyle along with your financial situation and future goals. Brokers provide three key advantages through their service which simplifies the process. A professional partner provides you with confidence built from knowledge that goes beyond seeking a loan while helping you make well-informed decisions. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Pexels
- Sun, Sweat & Skincare: Keeping Your Glow All Year in the Sunshine State
Living in Florida means embracing sunshine, beach days, and a lifestyle that revolves around the outdoors. But with all that sun and heat comes a serious need for a smart skincare strategy. Whether you're hitting the sand, walking the dog, or just trying to keep cool while running errands, the sun and humidity can take a toll on your skin. The good news? You don’t have to sacrifice your glow for the Florida lifestyle. Image by Mikhail Nilov This guide will walk you through year-round skincare "musts" that work with Florida’s unique climate. From everyday sun protection to pro-level treatments, here’s how to maintain that fresh, healthy glow no matter the season. Why Skincare Hits Different in Florida Florida's environment is intense: lots of UV exposure, high humidity, and, for many, a constant sheen of sweat. That means skincare here isn’t just about beauty; it’s about protection and long-term health. The constant sun can speed up aging and increase the risk of hyperpigmentation and skin cancer . Meanwhile, humidity can clog pores, leading to breakouts or dull texture. You can’t just follow the same routine you used in milder climates. Instead, Floridians need to think in layers: protect, hydrate, repair every single day. Morning Habits That Set the Tone Your AM routine sets the stage for how your skin handles everything the day throws at it; sweat, heat, and UV rays. Start with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. Overnight, your skin repairs itself and can produce excess oils or sweat, especially in warmer months. A foaming gel or water-based cleanser will refresh your face without drying it out. Next up: antioxidants. A vitamin C serum in the morning is non-negotiable. It helps combat sun damage, brightens skin, and boosts your SPF's effectiveness. And speaking of SPF, this should be the most consistent step in your Florida skincare ritual. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, preferably mineral-based if your skin is sensitive. And yes, even if it’s cloudy. Even if you’re indoors most of the day. UV rays find you. Make it easy by using a moisturizer with built-in SPF or applying a separate sunscreen as your final step. Bonus points if you throw on a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for your outdoor moments. Hydration That Holds Up in Humidity You might think that living in a humid place means your skin stays naturally hydrated. Not exactly. Sweat can dehydrate your skin, and air conditioning (your summer survival bestie) strips moisture fast. What you need is lightweight, breathable hydration that won’t clog your pores. Look for gel-based moisturizers with hyaluronic acid or glycerin. These ingredients pull water into the skin without adding heaviness. And don’t sleep on hydrating toners or facial mists; they can be great mid-day refreshers, especially if you're out and about. If you wear makeup, opt for formulas labeled " non-comedogenic " and consider using a setting spray with SPF for touch-ups throughout the day. Image by Jess Vide Repair Mode: Your Nighttime Routine Nighttime is when your skin can bounce back from everything it’s faced. This is the time to go in with your more active ingredients. After cleansing, consider a mild exfoliant but don’t overdo it. In a climate where you're sweating and cleansing more frequently, your skin barrier can get compromised. Limit chemical exfoliation to 2-3 times a week with AHAs or BHAs depending on your skin type. Next, apply a hydrating serum and follow up with a richer moisturizer than your morning one. At night, your skin is in recovery mode, and extra moisture helps speed that process. If you’re dealing with hyperpigmentation or uneven skin tone (common in sun-prone states), this is also the time to use targeted treatments like retinol or niacinamide. Just make sure you ease into these if you’re new and always buffer with moisturizer. Your Skincare Arsenal for Outdoor Activities Whether you're at the beach, biking, or just living that patio brunch life, your skin is still in the game. Keep sunscreen in your bag, your car, and near your front door. Reapplication is where most people fall short every 2 hours is ideal, especially if you’re sweating or swimming. Sun-protective clothing is also worth investing in. Look for UPF-rated shirts, hats, and swimwear. It’s a simple, stylish way to stay covered without having to coat every inch of your body in SPF. And don’t forget your lips, they need sun protection too. Choose a balm with SPF 15 or higher. When It's Time to Call in the Pros Daily care is essential, but sometimes, skin needs a little extra love after too much sun exposure or a bad breakout. That’s where professional treatments come in. Blond Injector is a trusted medical spa in Florida, known for cutting-edge beauty treatments and expert care. They offer options like hydrafacials, microneedling, and skin resurfacing that can target sun damage, fine lines, and uneven texture all tailored to Florida’s climate and your lifestyle. Even just one seasonal visit can reset your skin and give you noticeable results that home care alone might not achieve. Mindful Eating, Glowing Skin Skincare isn’t just topical ; what you eat matters, when your skin is under environmental stress. Drink plenty of water, especially after outdoor activities. Dehydration shows up fast on your face. Try to include skin-friendly foods rich in antioxidants (like berries, leafy greens, and citrus), omega-3s (from fish, flaxseed, or walnuts), and collagen boosters (like bone broth or collagen peptides). Limit sugar and dairy if you notice they trigger breakouts, and don’t forget to include healthy fats, they keep your skin plump and smooth from the inside out. Keep It Simple, Stay Consistent You don’t need a 12-step routine or expensive products to maintain great skin in Florida but you do need consistency. Focus on basics: cleanse, protect, hydrate, and repair. Don’t wait until you see damage to act. And remember, your skincare needs will shift slightly throughout the year; summer sun is different from winter dryness, even in the Sunshine State. Tune into your skin’s needs and adjust accordingly. With the right products, daily habits, and the occasional boost from skincare pros, your skin can thrive, even when the weather is working against you. Keep it simple, stay sun smart, and let that natural Florida glow shine through all year round. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Pexels

As founder of Kind Designs, Freeman is revolutionizing coastal infrastructure with 3D-printed “living seawalls” that are more affordable and eco-friendly than traditional concrete systems. “My vision is really to make Miami an example to the rest of the world, because we're really the first city to face this challenge of flooding and rising sea levels at scale. And we're either going to be an example or we're going to be a lesson.” Kind Designs has already deployed the world’s first 3D-printed seawall in Miami Beach, filtering 100,000 gallons of water daily with the help of over 2,000 oysters. Patrice Gillespie Smith , a longtime advocate for walkable cities , emphasized The Underline’s role as a public-private partnership reclaiming 10 miles of land beneath the Metrorail to create green infrastructure, pedestrian and bike corridors, and art-driven community spaces. “As a result of this ambitious mission, which is to transform the 10 miles beneath the Miami Metrorail, we are reclaiming the space for bicyclists and for pedestrians. We're ‘re-wilding’ Miami. Not many trees here anymore, but we’re changing that. By the time we're finished, 500,000 plants and trees will be planted, restoring the ecosystem. So we’re bringing back birds, bees, and butterflies that weren’t here or haven’t been here for decades, but are thankfully coming back thanks to that greenery.” Three new segments of The Underline are slated to open by the end of 2025, extending the project’s reach from Coconut Grove to Dadeland. Marta Marello , Building & Energy Analyst at Miami-Dade County, encouraged attendees to explore global best practices when thinking about energy-efficient development. Drawing inspiration from tropical climates more comparable to Miami, she shared an example from Singapore where a dated commercial structure was transformed into a model of innovation: “A bank in Singapore [for example] retrofitted a 30-year-old building and transformed it into a net zero building. And so the way they were able to do that was to take 10% of the space that was previously air conditioned and make it open air and ventilated. And then, just by innovative engineering, tightening the building envelope, and other strategies, they were able to drastically reduce the energy consumption—the baseline consumption of the building—by 70%, so that the remaining 30% that is needed to cover the building is generated by the roof.” The event concluded with an open Q&A, where attendees asked thoughtful questions about innovation, practical implementation, and how each speaker’s work contributes to a more resilient Miami. Following the panel, guests enjoyed networking, reinforcing the #CREWFirst culture of building meaningful professional relationships. It’s part of CREW Miami’s mission to continue conversations around cross-sector collaboration, creative problem-solving, and the role women play in driving sustainable progress in the built environment.
