Set on a former coffee plantation, the hotel seamlessly blends colonial-era architecture with contemporary comforts, making it an excellent base for travelers visiting Costa Rica for both business and leisure. One highlight during my stay was the authentic, friendly staff who made me feel completely at home. Their warm hospitality gave the entire property a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. History The history of Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belén is deeply rooted in Costa Rica’s coffee trade. The property was established by Sebastián de Zamora in the 19th century as a coffee and tobacco plantation. The region was crucial in Costa Rica’s rise as a major coffee exporter, with beans being sent to Europe via the port of Puntarenas. Photo by Karnav, Adobe Stock Guests can still see remnants of the past throughout the property, including curated original artifacts like traditional oxcarts that were once used to transport coffee beans—one of which is beautifully displayed in the lobby, now filled with vibrant flowers. Additionally, several original pieces are seamlessly incorporated into the hotel’s design, such as stable wooden doors and an antique bed that has been creatively repurposed into a table, among other unique touches. Accommodations The hotel offers 289 rooms and 10 suites, all designed to provide a modern, comfortable experience while still evoking the charm of a traditional Costa Rican hacienda. The room I stayed in featured rich wooden furnishings, soft beige and yellow tones, and large windows with views of the surrounding mountains, the golf course, and the lush grounds of the property. Updated amenities such as flat-screen TVs, high-speed internet, mini-fridges, and luxury bedding ensure guests feel right at home. Each room also includes several glass bottles of water, which guests can refill using the hotel’s filtered water stations—a thoughtful initiative aimed at reducing single-use plastic. Worth mentioning is that Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belén also caters to families and business travelers, offering family-friendly rooms and flexible configurations for group stays. Dining Dining at the Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belén offers a variety of local and international flavors. Hacienda Kitchen , the hotel’s signature restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a view of the golf course. The menu features traditional Costa Rican dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, offering an authentic taste of the region. A highlight is the hotel’s on-site organic garden, which grows herbs, strawberries, and star fruit that are often used in the dishes, enhancing the farm-to-table experience. For a more refined dining option, La Isabela Steakhouse offers expertly prepared steaks, a curated wine list, and an intimate atmosphere. During my visit, I enjoyed a unique tasting menu paired with wine painting. The Josper oven, using natural charcoal, imparts a rich, smoky flavor to the steak, making it one of the most memorable meals I’ve had. If you’re looking for something more casual, Casa del Café serves Costa Rican coffee, pastries, and light meals 24 hours a day. I had a special coffee tasting with Orgaikos Coffee , which offers a chance to experience organic coffee and learn about sustainable farming. For a change of pace, La Castilla offers Asian-fusion cuisine and exotic cocktails with stunning views from its outdoor terrace. Finally, Bar 10 combines a sports bar atmosphere with elevated dining, where guests can enjoy American favorites and cocktails while watching live games. Wellness & Recreation During my stay, I experienced Kuö Spa’s Coffee Scrub Treatment , which uses coffee from local vendors, including the hotel’s plantation. The exfoliation left my skin refreshed and soft. Inspired by the Cabécar culture, the spa incorporates natural elements like water, earth, sun, and moon. With 11 treatment rooms, including private suites with Jacuzzis overlooking the coffee fields, the spa offers a peaceful, relaxing setting. For those staying active, the hotel features a fully equipped fitness center, two outdoor pools, a golf driving range, and tennis courts. The golf course provides a serene environment for both casual and seasoned golfers. Winding paths throughout the grounds are perfect for morning walks. Along the way, I discovered thriving coffee plants, trees, and a charming butterfly garden with colorful blooms that attract butterflies, adding to the hotel’s natural beauty. Sustainability The hotel takes sustainability seriously, with several environmental initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. In 2021, the Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belén became the first Marriott property in Latin America to install a solar-powered microgrid system. The solar panels generate energy to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 20.8 tons annually. Beyond energy efficiency, the hotel is actively involved in the local community through its Serve 360 initiative, which supports local projects and charitable organizations like the Food Bank of Costa Rica and the Roblealto Association. They also lead environmental programs, such as the recycling of plastic bottle caps to create accessible beach paths for people with disabilities, which demonstrates the hotel’s ongoing commitment to sustainability. Don’t miss a visit to Galería Talentum, where local artists showcase contemporary Costa Rican art in a relaxed, welcoming space. Spirogyra Butterfly Garden Tucked away in the bustling neighborhood of Barrio Tournón, this tranquil oasis offers a break from the city’s energy. The Spirogyra Butterfly Garden is home to hundreds of colorful butterflies and lush tropical plants, just a short walk from downtown. It’s a great place to unwind and learn about Costa Rica’s biodiversity without leaving the city. Mercado Escalante A culinary hub hidden in the eastern part of San José, Barrio Escalante is known for its trendy food scene. Mercado Escalante and Calle 33 are home to a collective of gourmet restaurants and craft breweries, offering everything from Costa Rican fusion to international cuisine. The ambiance is lively yet relaxed, perfect for an evening stroll and bite. Museo de Jade While not entirely hidden, the Jade Museum is often overlooked by tourists in favor of more famous sites. However, its modern design and impressive collection of pre-Columbian artifacts make it a must-visit. With the world’s largest collection of American jade, the museum offers a glimpse into the spiritual and artistic life of Costa Rica’s indigenous cultures. Parque Nacional & Parque España Skip the usual parks and head to these adjacent green spaces in the heart of San José. Parque Nacional features monuments to Costa Rican independence and shaded walkways, while Parque España offers iron sculptures and lush gardens. These parks are less touristy and more frequented by locals—a great place to feel the city’s rhythm. Casa del Cuño Located near the Antigua Aduana, Casa del Cuño is a hidden cultural gem that hosts pop-up markets, art exhibitions, and craft fairs. Morning Habits That Set the Tone Your AM routine sets the stage for how your skin handles everything the day throws at it; sweat, heat, and UV rays. Start with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. On April 16, Commercial Real Estate Women Miami (CREW Miami) hosted its Lunch & Learn, “Building Resilience: Sustainable Real Estate Practices in Miami” , at the Mayfair House Hotel & Garden in Coconut Grove. The panel highlighted three leading women in South Florida’s sustainability movement, who are applying innovation, policy, and community design to future-proof the region’s built environment. Patrice Gillespie Smith, President & COO, The Underline Conservancy; Shannon Wilson, Associate Director Mortgage Banking at Berkadia and CREW Miami’s 2025 Program Director; Anya Freeman, Founder & CEO, Kind Designs; Josie Legido Correa, Director of Business Development at JWR Construction Services and CREW Miami’s 2025 Board President; Dorota Lopez, CEO, GFD Group; and Marta Marello, Building & Energy Analyst, Office of Resilience Division, Miami-Dade County. As founder of Kind Designs, Freeman is revolutionizing coastal infrastructure with 3D-printed “living seawalls” that are more affordable and eco-friendly than traditional concrete systems. “My vision is really to make Miami an example to the rest of the world, because we're really the first city to face this challenge of flooding and rising sea levels at scale. And we're either going to be an example or we're going to be a lesson.” Kind Designs has already deployed the world’s first 3D-printed seawall in Miami Beach, filtering 100,000 gallons of water daily with the help of over 2,000 oysters. Patrice Gillespie Smith , a longtime advocate for walkable cities , emphasized The Underline’s role as a public-private partnership reclaiming 10 miles of land beneath the Metrorail to create green infrastructure, pedestrian and bike corridors, and art-driven community spaces. “As a result of this ambitious mission, which is to transform the 10 miles beneath the Miami Metrorail, we are reclaiming the space for bicyclists and for pedestrians. We're ‘re-wilding’ Miami. Not many trees here anymore, but we’re changing that. By the time we're finished, 500,000 plants and trees will be planted, restoring the ecosystem. So we’re bringing back birds, bees, and butterflies that weren’t here or haven’t been here for decades, but are thankfully coming back thanks to that greenery.” Three new segments of The Underline are slated to open by the end of 2025, extending the project’s reach from Coconut Grove to Dadeland. Marta Marello , Building & Energy Analyst at Miami-Dade County, encouraged attendees to explore global best practices when thinking about energy-efficient development. Drawing inspiration from tropical climates more comparable to Miami, she shared an example from Singapore where a dated commercial structure was transformed into a model of innovation: “A bank in Singapore [for example] retrofitted a 30-year-old building and transformed it into a net zero building. And so the way they were able to do that was to take 10% of the space that was previously air conditioned and make it open air and ventilated. And then, just by innovative engineering, tightening the building envelope, and other strategies, they were able to drastically reduce the energy consumption—the baseline consumption of the building—by 70%, so that the remaining 30% that is needed to cover the building is generated by the roof.” The event concluded with an open Q&A, where attendees asked thoughtful questions about innovation, practical implementation, and how each speaker’s work contributes to a more resilient Miami. Following the panel, guests enjoyed networking, reinforcing the #CREWFirst culture of building meaningful professional relationships.
