All You Need to Know About Kitesurfing in Miami Beach



Before heading out to Kitesurf beware that you will need to obtain a permit. Ordinance No. 2019-4263, has been designed to ensure safety protocols are maintained. The permit costs $46 dollars and will be valid for a period of 5 years from issue date. Once you complete the application form (search for kitesurfing to complete the correct form) bring it in person to the City of Miami Beach Customer Service Center located at in Miami Beach (1755 Meridian Avenue, Suite 100).


In addition be aware of three important guidelines from Miami Beach Kiteboarders Foundation. Designed to keep everyone safe, Kiteboarders should stay at least 50 feet away from swimmers, 200 feet from shore and should only kite over the beach for launching and landing purposes.

Where to Kitesurf


The best time to kitesurf in Florida is from October to May due to stronger winds and the best locations in Miami are listed below (be sure to bring your permit!).


Crandon Park

Crandon Park is one of the most popular destinations for Kitesurfing. Miami Kiteboarding will register you upon arrival an explain the basics that you need to know.

Matheson Hammock Park

9610 Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables, FL 33156


Matheson Hammock Park located just south of Coral Gables is also a popular kitesurfing destinations. Specific kitesurfing should be observed.

Key Biscayne

6767 Crandon Blvd, Key Biscayne, FL 33149


Near Matheson Hammock, Key Biscayne is a gorgeous site to Kitesurf. It can get busy there but don't worry, you can always find a scape route.

Miami Beach

The beaches located on 21st and 87th Street are popular Kitesurfing destinations in Miami Beach due to choppy waters. However, be aware that most beaches in Miami Beach is busy with swimmers. Best time to kitesurf is early morning or late afternoon. Weekends are specially busy with tourists. Kitesurfing has been prohibited between 24th and 25th street and 29th street.


If you are a beginner, you can take lessons at The Kite Shop located on 76th street. Be sure to bring your permit for your lessons.
