What is Art Basel All About?

Art Basel Miami Beach launched in 2002 as the American extension of the renowned Art Basel fair, founded in Switzerland in 1970 by MCH Group to spotlight contemporary and modern art on a global stage.

The Miami Beach edition, which started in 2002, is the most prominent art fair in the Americas and typically occurs in early December.  It’s now a central part of Miami’s cultural scene, attracting art collectors, galleries, artists, and enthusiasts from around the globe, with 80,000 visitors annually.

Art Basel is primarily an event showcasing modern and contemporary art from both established and emerging artists. It serves as a global meeting point where art, culture, business, and social life converge, making it a must-attend event for anyone passionate about contemporary art.

Why is Art Basel so Important?

Art Basel is a key event in the global art world due to its immense influence and prestige. It attracts top galleries, collectors, and curators, setting trends in modern and contemporary art.

The fair is a platform for cultural exchange, promoting both emerging and established artists while driving significant art sales, which shape the global market. Art Basel also supports non-profit organizations and hosts high-profile cultural and social events that foster connections and collaborations within the industry.

How is Art Basel Miami Beach Organized?

Art Basel Miami Beach is divided into several sectors, each dedicated to different facets of contemporary and modern art. The main sector, Galleries, features leading international galleries presenting works by emerging talents and established masters. We have created a comprehensive gallery guide here.

Other sectors include Meridians, which showcases large-scale projects curated by Yasmil Raymond, and Nova, focusing on recent works by one to three artists. Positions highlights solo presentations by emerging artists, while Survey focuses on galleries exploring historically significant artistic practices. Additional sections like Kabinett feature curated exhibitions within booths, and Conversations offers live debates with cultural thought leaders.

What’s New and Exciting at Art Basel Miami Beach 2024?

Art Basel Miami Beach 2024 will feature 283 galleries from 38 countries.

Yasmil Raymond will curate the 2024 Meridians sector for the first time, bringing her expertise as the former Director of Portikus and Rector of the Hochschule für Bildendende Künste-Städelschule in Germany to the large-scale projects that push the boundaries of traditional art fair formats.

Other exhibition sectors, such as Nova and Positions, will continue to focus on emerging artists, showcasing innovative and new works. Meanwhile, the Kabinett sector will offer intimate, thematic exhibitions.

The 2024 edition will also host the popular Conversations program, with a premiere artist talk by Hank Willis Thomas. This discussion series remains a key platform for art-world dialogue and networking, enriching the experience for collectors, curators, and art enthusiasts alike.
