About Kartell

Founded by Giulio Castelli in 1949, Kartell embarked on a remarkable journey that would come to define the essence of the 'Made in Italy' label. In its formative years, the company developed a distinctive design language that captured the imagination of a global audience. A pivotal moment occurred in 1988 when Claudio Luti, Giulio Castelli's son-in-law, acquired the company. Drawing upon his fashion experience gained at Versace, Luti instigated a renaissance for Kartell characterized by an unwavering commitment to perfection and refined design aesthetics. Under Luti’s stewardship, Kartell engaged in fruitful collaborations with prominent designers and architects, including Philippe Starck, Roberto Lissoni, and Patricia Urquiola. This period saw innovative explorations of materials, transforming how furnishing items were conceived and manufactured. The groundbreaking moment arrived in 1999 when Kartell became the world’s first company to utilize polycarbonate for furniture production. The introduction of La Marie, a completely transparent chair embodying modern minimalism, marked a significant turning point, leading to the creation of iconic pieces such as the Louis Ghost chair. This innovation not only established Kartell’s reputation but also initiated an enduring exploration of transparency, surfaces, and shapes, setting a new standard in furniture design. Kartell’s commitment to pioneering materials and technologies has resulted in products that are both original and unmatched in the contemporary design landscape.
