- Miami’s Sarah Newberry Moore Reflects on Paris 2024 at Olympian Reunion with 8 Fellow Olympians
Just over a month after competing in the Paris Olympics, Sarah Newberry Moore, a Miami native and accomplished Nacra 17 sailor, joined fellow Olympians in Marblehead, MA at the Eastern Yacht Club on September 12 to reflect on their summer in France. The evening, presented by Samsonite and Sextant Wines, provided a chance for athletes like Moore to reconnect, share their favorite Olympic moments, and offer insights into their journeys. Moore recounted the electric atmosphere when Team USA celebrated its first sailing medal since 2016, a moment she described as deeply emotional and unifying for the team. Stephanie Roble (Tokyo 2020 & Paris 2024 49erFX) answers a question on the microphone during the panel portion of the evening, seated next to Hans Henken (Paris 2024 49er) to her right and David Liebenberg (Paris 2024 Nacra 17) to her left Watch the panel recording here. In attendance: Lara Dallman-Weiss, Mixed 470 (Shoreview, MN) Markus Edegran, Men’s Kite (Ossining, NY) Hans Henken, Men’s 49er & Bronze Medalist (San Francisco, CA) David Liebenberg, Nacra 17 (Richmond, CA) Noah Lyons, Men’s iQFOiL (Clearwater, FL) Stuart McNay, Mixed 470 (Providence, RI) Sarah Newberry Moore, Nacra 17 (Miami, FL) Stephanie Roble, 49erFX (East Troy, WI) Maggie Shea, 49erFX (Wilmette, IL) Unable to attend: Ian Barrows, Daniela Moroz, Erika Reineke, Dominique Stater Athletes reminisced on their favorite moments, including witnessing the first Team USA sailing medal since Rio 2016 and the first medal for USA in the 49er since Sydney 2000, achieved by Ian Barrows and Hans Henken in Marseille. “All of us in the [Team base] were screaming at the top of our lungs,” recounted Nacra 17 athlete Sarah Newberry Moore. “I don’t think I’ve ever had such a deep, guttural reaction to something in my sport, and watching Hans and Ian win that medal was an extremely special moment. We were already very bonded as a team, but that moment we were just 1000% behind them every second of that race.” They shared advice for athletes coming up behind them, with bronze medalist Hans Henken leaning into a misconception about the path to the Olympics: “I think one aspect that’s really easily overlooked is that you don’t necessarily have to sail an Olympic class boat to become an Olympian. Being able to sail any type of boat is a huge skill and having those skillsets at a young age and growing with that is a huge thing that translates into Olympic sailing. I mean the class that Markus (Men’s Kite) is currently campaigning in for 2028 and what he went to Paris for wasn’t even an Olympic class when he started kiting. So how does he even know that he’s campaigning? He has to take a lot of skillsets from other classes and apply those to what he’s currently doing and has to grow and learn from there.” In addition to the conversation with athletes, attendees were treated to a selection of Sextant Wines and took home Samsonite luggage tags. Athletes were presented with 1.5L custom wine bottles by co-owners Craig and Nancy Stoller and arrived in style with their innovative Samsonite luggage that was provided ahead of travel to Marseille. - Tua Tagovailoa's Health and Future: Updates from the Miami Dolphins
As the Miami Dolphins continue to navigate a season marked by both anticipation and challenges, questions about QB Tua Tagovailoa’s health and future remain at the forefront. Recently, media members sought updates from Dolphins’ Head Coach on Tagovailoa's recovery, how he's feeling, and what the next steps could be for the quarterback, both in terms of his health and career. In a candid press conference, the coach provided insight into Tagovailoa’s current status, the team’s approach to managing his situation, and how the Dolphins are adapting moving forward. Here’s what was shared. Q: I was going ask, is QB Tua Tagovailoa exhibiting any symptoms? How is he feeling? Does he have symptoms? "He was downstairs today smiling with his teammates. He's working with the trainers and medical staff diligently and as far as I'm concerned, you're in the protocol and I think he's doing well today and we take it day by day. He was feeling good, but what does that mean in terms of a medical diagnosis? I don't base my judgments on my interactions with him necessarily as much as it is hearing the end result of the medical examination and where he's at. It was good to see him and I know his teammates were pumped to see him." Q: You implored people not to worry too much or discuss too much about his future, what's next, to take it day by day; but there was a report yesterday by NFL Network that QB Tua Tagovailoa is focused on playing football again and coming back. Has he given you any indication? Is that what seems to be the plan for him as he moves forward? "I think as far as Tua's career is concerned, I think it's of utmost priority of mind for Tua to speak on Tua's career. So I think reports are reports. As far as I'm concerned, I'm just worried about the human being and where that's at day to day, and I think I'll let Tua be the champion of his own career and speak on that." Q: Is he going on injured reserve? "Not enough information quite yet. That's going to be driven by medical experts and then when we get the appropriate information and discuss with Tua, then Chris (Grier) and I can discuss that. Not quite ready to make a distinction on that, so that could or couldn't. We'll see in the next coming days." Q: Unfortunately this is something that he has history with now as far as evaluation and seeing doctors and specialists and all that. Last time he sought independent specialists. Are you encouraging him to go that route again this time? "Absolutely. That will be part of the process, for sure." Q: What made QB Tyler Huntley the choice as a quarterback being brought in? "In lieu of the fact that if you're not going to adhere to timelines based upon what the science tells us and how we want to approach individual situations and player injuries; with that unknown, that was something that – ever since he's – it's been apparent from afar and then having some coaches that have been around him, shoot, he was replacing the league MVP and you could tell from far away that he was a guy that the team absolutely believed could lead them to victory. I think that's a very huge tangible thing for a non-QB1 necessarily, and so for us without knowing exact timelines, we got to learn firsthand a nice reminder of how it only takes one play and what you think your depth is changes abruptly. So that's a move for moving forward to secure some depth in case of the unforeseen which is timelines for us as it relates to Tua." Q: To kind of drill down on QB Tyler Huntley and why he's here, is he being brought in to serve as the No. 2 behind QB Skylar Thompson or the No. 3 behind QB Tim Boyle or compete with Skylar eventually? "This was not a move to in any way, shape or form out of anything not that has to do with Skylar (Thompson). Our team going all the way back to his first rep in rookie minicamp as a rookie to down the stretch of the 2022 season to what he was able to do to win the No. 2 job, this is not in any direct reflection to Skylar as Tua's backup. This is more for the depth. I do think that it helps the dynamics of the room to give another guy with starting history to this team and gives another added addition of a guy that's a signal-caller that a team can get behind. I was happy adding – what we were able to do in the quarterback room – in adding (Tim) Boyle, but I think this is more directly to back up Skylar and then you always let competition play out when it's out on the field, but this was a depth move, for sure." Q: This decision, obviously QB Skylar Thompson did well in training camp, has done well in the exhibition season throughout the years and he does have the most familiarity with your offense. But what makes you so convicted that he can lead this team to victories? "And I totally understand that question and this is deep-seated. This is observation from the second that he got on site. I think you learn so much about people when they're put into new situations and from his first rep in rookie minicamp, his first day on site to his first rep against I think it was the New York Jets or his first start against the Minnesota Vikings or his next start which was win-or-go-home situation – the final game of the regular season – or his start in the Buffalo game in the playoffs on the road where all these situations, you are grading the player and how he is executing what he is seeing live-speed. And time and time again, he's done things that are very, very difficult your first time around. And then I know last season we didn't really get the opportunity to see him play. It was a neck-and-neck competition in training camp and last year I thought Mike (White) did a great job giving us what the team needed and with an extra year under his belt, I thought in a tight race that he (Skylar Thompson) really separated himself. So I think his game has developed since he's had a starting opportunity in the National Football League. I think all his teammates can feel his command and his growth, and I think he put together some winning football as a rookie. Rookies have a hard enough time digesting anything, let alone being a quarterback in this offense, so there's a lot of reasons that his teammates have to fully believe in him and his ability which is why he was the No. 2 named from the end of preseason." Q: I guess the idea was this offense needs a certain kind of quarterback to operate it. You've said that QB Tua Tagovailoa is the ideal quarterback for this system. QB Tyler Huntley, he and Tua have different games. Is it a signal that you're willing with QB Skylar Thompson, with Tyler if he ever plays to broaden the playbook? To go a different route? Maybe do some concepts that haven't been really the bread and butter of what we've seen? "Absolutely and I think there's also the history of our offense does not start Year 1 with the Dolphins. I think with the different assets that we have and this complexion of the offense, for sure, there's a reason why I feel that with the utmost conviction with Tua, but going all the way back to some of the concepts and some of the beliefs that we've kind of developed, it wasn't too long ago where we were adapting within the offense, we were adapting in Washington to uncharted zone read territory. So that was something that we learned that we've kept in place in various situations. We've actually run a couple concepts here before when Skylar (Thompson) and Teddy (Bridgewater) were playing in '22. And then that's something that we carried all the way through 2021 in San Fran when we had Trey Lance on board as well. So there's ways within the offense to adapt to your skill position players and I think you're never – I know from a defensive perspective what that adds to how you have to defend so there is an advantage to, quite frankly, a different angle or a different competitive advantage when your quarterback has a lot of success with his feet. So I think that is something that from our offensive standpoint is not as outside-the-box as one may think. Tua's No. 1 RPO that he runs all the time is an extension of a zone read principle that he just throws instead of running the ball. So there's good caveats to it and a lot of different ways to skin a cat." Q: The last week dating back to even a week ago, it's been pretty emotional for this team and obviously the latest with QB Tua Tagovailoa. How much of the focus as you begin a new week and prep for the next game is it a focus to kind of re-center things? That things aren't getting away from you after all the kind of emotion of the last week or so? "Absolutely. That's a huge thing as we grow as a team. Listen, you call a spade a spade – as a team you have to address the fact that why did we feel the way we felt, why were we so caught off guard and why was the ultimate result something that we've been working diligently at preventing for a long time? And the biggest thing is when you are going above and beyond and then absolutely get the opposite results desired, you make sure that the team is individually focused on the growth of their game and not looking over their shoulder being like, 'OK, well shoot…' I was really enthused by today just in general because you want starting from – let's take as an example Anthony Weaver as the defensive coordinator and the trickle-down effect of how the defensive coordinator looks at the result. Well, it could be very easy for a lot of people to be like, 'There was three turnovers and two turnovers on down or whatever and 24 points came off those.' That is the easiest thing. The hard thing is to say, 'Whatever, let's tune up our game, I don't care about what other phases are doing, I don't care about what other positions are doing. How do I relate to our ultimate job? As 'Weave' (Anthony Weaver) said, our job is to get the ball back. I think teams are 18-3 in 2024 when the turnover differential is in the plus. But that doesn't help anyone get better if you just focus on 'Hey, I'm good.' So to me, worrying about our standard and focusing on winning the next game is absolutely the most important thing that this team can learn, especially after you – nobody on the team saw the end result coming, but now I feel like our team understands why it did and then what our objectives are to clean up our game as fast as possible to render results that we're more satisfied with, plain and simple." Q: Do you expect to have T Terron Armstead available on Sunday? "Yeah, I think he's day to day. So what that looks like – I feel it's definitely more of a day-to-day situation, so I'm optimistic." Q: RB De'Von Achane right now through two games has 46 touches, the next five players have combined for 44. Was this always the plan for him to be such a heavy vocal point of this offense? Or is there a plan to diversify a little bit? "Well, I think there's compounding variables. I wouldn't say – I knew he was going to have an uptick in involvement. I think with Raheem (Mostert), his situation, that's kind of added to it, the defenses structures and what they've committed themselves to has given him more opportunities. I think specifically it's hard not to give guys opportunities that really are thirsting for the ball that are doing something with it – so it's to his credit. You want to talk about a guy that literally did everything imaginable to have that Thursday night opportunity in terms of his time in the training room and making sure he was a full-go. All he's done has given more reasons to get him the ball. I wouldn't say that – it was probably quite the opposite going into the season. I wasn't thinking – we really have a situation where there's a lot of people to give the ball, more so than I've ever been used to here, so to say that I was forecasting such a heavy dose, that wouldn't be honest. But at the same time, he's definitely earned all of the opportunities and he could make a case for even more. So I think I wouldn't expect – there's so many playmakers that we had to diversify. I think his production with the ball right now is definitely a positive for us, because to get the ball away from him, you got to do some good stuff with it. So I think it puts pressure on all eligibles and what you do with the ball, because he's made it very clear that on the routine, he's probably making the first guy miss." Q: Upon review of the film, why was it so hard to get WR Tyreek Hill and WR Jaylen Waddle the ball consistently against the Bills? "Well, I think there's – football is definitely a team sport. Offensive football, when a team is committing – when a defensive team or an opponent is committing to take somebody away, you have to make them pay appropriately. I think the ops are still there, they just might not be as multiple when you're having a two-man player, you have two people guarding one on run downs. So I think those, what's cool about 'Reek' (Tyreek Hill) and (Jaylen) Waddle and their understanding of football and really our offense is there's certain situations where, it doesn't happen that often, but they'll come to the sidelines and tell me, 'Hey, you know what? We need to run the ball.' What they're saying is they know there's not a run fit player. They know that the safety and the corner aren't even looking at the ball during our play action, so you have to execute and make people pay when they're overplaying something. I think that teams have a lot of reason to focus on those guys and I think collectively it's a group effort to get them more involved because they're the – case in point, the rest of the offense is in an advantageous situation if they're going to fully commit the way that some teams have been, that you always have to keep them involved, but there's a balance where teammates have to really make opposing teams pay if they're going to overcommit that way. And until we do, I think they understand as much as everybody else that teams will do something until you make them pay for it." By ML Staff. Content/Image courtesy of Miami Dolphins
- Downtown Fort Lauderdale's Huizenga Park Redesign Begins: Perkins&Will Miami Studio Leads the Vision
After years of planning, design, and community engagement, the Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and the Huizenga Park Foundation are proud to announce the construction commencement of the Huizenga Park Reimagined project. Broward County-based MBR Construction, Inc. and KEITH, with construction, engineering, and inspection (CEI) services, will deliver an improved Huizenga Park for the Fort Lauderdale community. "We could not be more excited for renovations to begin on Huizenga Park. This project represents the DDA's longstanding commitment to make Downtown Fort Lauderdale the most desired, livable community in the region," said Jenni Morejon, President & CEO of the Fort Lauderdale DDA. "MBR and KEITH's proven track record make them the perfect fit to carry out construction. Their dedication to improving public spaces in South Florida has not gone unnoticed, and they will do a phenomenal job transforming Huizenga Park." Fort Lauderdale-based MBR Construction, a family-owned firm, has over three decades of experience transforming public spaces in South Florida. The DDA first contracted with MBR over 20 years ago to complete Downtown Fort Lauderdale's first major streetscape improvement project, transforming the SE/SW 2 Street stretch from the Broward Center for the Performing Arts to the US 1 Tunnel. The DDA studied world-class parks in cities across the United States to inform the design vision for the new Huizenga Park. Nationally renowned design firm Perkins&Will spearheaded the park's redesign and introduced a dynamic mix of uses to transform Huizenga Park into a highly active community gathering space for everyone, day and night, all year long. The mix of uses is modeled after successful designs seen in major urban centers across the country, including New York City’s Bryant Park , widely regarded as one of the most successful urban park transformations in the world. Perkins&Will’s Miami Studio focused on sustainability and resilience throughout the redesign, creating a park that balances leisure, activity, and community engagement. The new design will revitalize Huizenga Park with a series of outdoor rooms , setting it apart from traditional parks by offering spaces for dining, physical activity, events, meet-ups, and relaxation. Key design features include an updated Spirit of Fort Lauderdale Fountain , an enhanced Riverwalk section , a lush shade canopy , a civic lawn , a dog run , and a waterfront restaurant . "Our mission is to create a space that enhances Huizenga Park’s offerings while still paying homage to its existing strengths and location along the New River. We aim to raise the bar for design excellence in public spaces," said James Phillips Senior Landscape Architect at Perkins&Will. "We recognize the park as a focal point of the Downtown Fort Lauderdale experience, contributing to the tremendous walkability of the area, and we are honored and excited to rejuvenate it to better serve Fort Lauderdale." Fort Lauderdale-based Sweet waters , a full-service restaurant to be operated by the same team behind Miami’s iconic Rusty Pelican, will serve as a hub for dining within the park. Designed by Stiles Architectural Group , an in-kind contribution, the park will also feature fully attended public restrooms and a Legacy Wall honoring Huizenga Park's biggest champions. "We are incredibly honored to partner with the Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Authority on the revitalization of Huizenga Park," said Michael Boss, President of MBR Construction. "As a family-owned business, we deeply connect to the Fort Lauderdale community. Huizenga Park is a beloved destination, and we're excited to transform it into an even more vibrant and welcoming space for the community to enjoy." Construction is expected to take just over a year, with the park reopening by late 2025. During the construction period, a pedestrian pathway along the Riverwalk will remain accessible to the public. - Discover the New Wave of Sake: Try American-Made Oishii this World Sake Day - October 1st
Most people associate sake with Japanese food - either a sake bomb on a night out with friends or an expensive bottle at a high-end sushi restaurant. American-made Oishii Sake is aiming to disrupt that connotation. Oishii is the fresh face of sake that’s making waves with its bold statement: ‘Sake, not just for sushi anymore™’. Miami founder Buzzy Sklar launched Oishii, hoping that consumers would pair it with everything from pizza to tacos to steak. This innovative, freshly launched brand is setting out to revolutionize how we experience sake with its blend of authentic Japanese craftsmanship and American ingenuity. Oishii sake is crafted using pristine Blue Ridge Mountain water and premium Titan rice from a single-origin farm in Arkansas and then brewed in Charlottesville, Virginia. It’s wallet-friendly too, with a suggested retail of $29.99. The brand launched with two iterations of Oishii: cloudy and clear. Cloudy Oishii Nigori: This variety is a delightful, lightly sweet sake with tantalizing notes of banana and melon, perfect for those who love a smooth, fruity profile. - Brandt Snedeker Named U.S. Team Captain’s Assistant for 2024 Presidents Cup
U.S. Team Captain Jim Furyk announced Brandt Snedeker as his fourth captain’s assistant for the 2024 Presidents Cup. Snedeker, who was honored with the Payne Stewart Award presented by Southern Company last month, will join fellow assistants Stewart Cink, Justin Leonard and Kevin Kisner when the Presidents Cup returns to The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Canada, Sept. 24-29. Keegan Bradley, who was previously named as a captain’s assistant in August, was one of Furyk’s six captain’s picks to round out his 12-player U.S. Team. Snedeker, 43, represented the U.S. Team in the 2013 Presidents Cup at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, compiling a 2-3-0 record. The Tennessee native also played for the United States in the 2012 and 2016 Ryder Cups, where he amassed a 4-2-0 record. Snedeker, who will be a first-time captain’s assistant in the Presidents Cup, was named one Bradley’s vice captains for the 2025 Ryder Cup. “I enjoyed competing together with Brandt at the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah. He is a fierce competitor, great teammate and one of the most respected players on the PGA TOUR. He will provide a steady voice in the team room, and I will rely on him for insight and advice as we lead our 12 players into Montreal at the end of the month,” said Furyk. Snedeker owns nine career wins on the PGA TOUR, including the 2012 TOUR Championship, where he also won the FedExCup. The former Vanderbilt University standout is one of just 13 players in PGA TOUR history to card a sub-60 round, doing so at the 2018 Wyndham Championship, where a first-round 59 helped him collect his ninth title. “I was honored to get the call from Jim and thrilled to accept this role as one of his captain’s assistants for the Presidents Cup,” said Snedeker. “He’s someone I’ve looked up to throughout my career and I know will be a strong leader for the U.S. Team at Royal Montreal. My goal is to add a trusted voice to our players throughout the week and do everything I can to help us pull out the win.” For more information about the Presidents Cup, or to purchase tickets, please visit PresidentsCup.com . - 10 Financial Mistakes You Can Avoid to Secure Your Future
Let’s be honest, managing your finances isn’t always easy. It can be overwhelming, especially with all the advice out there. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to be a financial expert to avoid the most common money mistakes. In fact, just recognizing what those mistakes are can be a game-changer. Want to build a secure future for yourself and your loved ones? It starts with steering clear of a few pitfalls that could trip you up along the way. Let’s dive into the top ten financial mistakes you should avoid, and how you can fix them to keep your future on track. Image by photobyphotoboy / Adobestock Not Having an Emergency Fund We all know life is full of surprises. The question is: are you prepared for them? Whether it’s a sudden medical bill, car repair, or job loss, having an emergency fund can make all the difference. Without it, you could find yourself relying on credit cards or loans to cover unexpected expenses, which can quickly spiral into more debt. How much should you save? A general rule of thumb is to stash away three to six months’ worth of living expenses. It might sound like a lot, but start small. Even putting away $20 a week adds up over time. The goal is to build a cushion that gives you peace of mind. Living Beyond Your Means You might have heard the phrase "keeping up with the Joneses." It’s tempting, right? We all want the latest gadgets, trendy clothes, or that brand-new car. But here’s the catch: if you’re spending more than you’re making, it’s only a matter of time before things start to fall apart financially. Take a hard look at your spending habits. Are there areas where you could cut back? Maybe cook at home instead of eating out, or downgrade that subscription service you barely use. Living within your means isn’t about depriving yourself, it’s about making sure you’re setting yourself up for long-term success. Failing to Budget Properly Budgeting might not sound glamorous, but it’s one of the most powerful tools in your financial toolbox. Without a budget, you’re flying blind when it comes to managing your money. You might think you know where your cash is going, but do you really? Creating a budget doesn’t have to be complicated. You can use simple methods like the 50/30/20 rule, where 50% of your income goes to needs, 30% to wants, and 20% to savings or debt. Or, you can get more detailed and track every single expense. The point is to know where your money is going and adjust if necessary. It’s all about staying in control. Image by Nuttapong punna / Adobestock Ignoring Debt Repayment Debt. It’s that word none of us like to think about, but it’s crucial to tackle it head-on. Whether it’s student loans, credit card balances, or a personal loan, ignoring debt doesn’t make it go away. In fact, it only grows, thanks to interest. Start by organizing your debts. Make a list of what you owe, the interest rates, and the minimum payments. Then, consider using a repayment strategy like the snowball method (paying off the smallest debt first) or the avalanche method (focusing on the debt with the highest interest). Little by little, you’ll start seeing progress and trust me, that’s a great feeling. Not Saving for Retirement Early Retirement might seem like a far-off goal, but time flies. And the sooner you start saving, the better off you’ll be. Why? Compound interest. This financial magic means your money grows over time, and the earlier you start, the more time it has to build. If your job offers a 401(k) with a match, take advantage of it. It’s essentially free money for your retirement. And if that’s not an option, consider opening an IRA. Even contributing small amounts early on can make a big difference later. Overlooking Insurance Coverage It’s easy to think car insurance and other types of coverage are things you can skip to save a few bucks. But one unexpected disaster, whether it’s an accident, illness, or home damage can wipe out years of savings in a blink. Having the right insurance coverage is about protecting yourself and your assets. Auto, health, home, and even life insurance are all worth considering depending on your situation. It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it, right? Making Emotional Financial Decisions We’ve all been there when something happens, and we make a split-second decision based on emotion rather than logic. Whether it’s panic selling an investment or impulse buying, emotions can lead us to choices we later regret. Take a breath. Step back. Whenever possible, give yourself some time to think things through. Financial decisions, especially big ones, deserve careful consideration. Ask yourself: is this move going to benefit my long-term financial goals, or is it a knee-jerk reaction to something temporary? Neglecting to Invest or Diversify Are you letting your money sit idle in a savings account? If so, you’re missing out on opportunities for growth. Investing might sound risky, but it’s one of the best ways to build wealth over time. That said, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Diversification is spreading your investments across different types of assets thus, helps protect your portfolio from market swings. Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and even real estate can all play a role in a balanced investment strategy. And the best part? You don’t need to be a financial guru to get started. There are plenty of beginner-friendly investment platforms that can help. Image by Summit Art Creations / Adobestock Avoiding Financial Education Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to managing your money. Yet, too many people avoid learning about personal finance because it seems intimidating. But here’s the good news: you don’t need a finance degree to get ahead. There are tons of resources out there, from books and podcasts to free online courses. Even just dedicating a few hours a month to learning more about budgeting, investing, or retirement planning can put you light years ahead of where you are now. Plus, being financially literate gives you the confidence to make smart decisions. Not Planning for Major Life Events Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs, buying a house, having kids, dealing with healthcare needs. These big events can be stressful, but with a little planning, they don’t have to derail your finances. Start by thinking about the major milestones you’ll likely encounter in the next five to ten years. Are you saving for a down payment on a home? Planning for childcare expenses? Preparing for healthcare costs? The more you can plan ahead, the smoother these transitions will be. It’s all about being proactive rather than reactive. Conclusion So there you have it, ten common financial mistakes that many people make without even realizing it. But the good news? Every single one of these mistakes is avoidable. By being mindful of where your money is going, making smart financial choices, and planning for the future, you’re already ahead of the game. Remember, financial security isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making better decisions over time. Start small, stay consistent, and keep your eyes on the long-term prize. Your future self will thank you! By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Adobestock

"Miami is a city brimming with unique stories and cultural richness,” said James Woolley, Miami Film Festival’s Executive Director. “The Louies will play a crucial role in amplifying local voices, providing the resources and platform necessary for our local filmmakers to tell the stories that make South Florida special." The Louies will be awarded to Miami-based filmmakers in one of three categories: Feature-length documentary: One filmmaker will receive $50,000 to create a documentary of 50 minutes or more. Short documentaries: Three filmmakers will receive $10,000 each to create a short film of eight to 12 minutes. Finishing funds: Two filmmakers will receive $10,000 each to complete a feature-length documentary in the post-production phase. Image by Valery Tenevoy/Unsplash Applicants must be permanent residents of Miami-Dade County, 18 years of age or older and either U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents. Feature documentary applicants must have previously completed a short documentary, while short documentary applicants may be first-time directors, but must have prior experience working on a short film and received film credit. The Louies are being launched by the Miami Film Festival and the Lynn & Louis Wolfson II Family Foundation, founded by the Wolfson family, who also established Miami's first TV station, WTVJ. Louis Wolfson II led the TV and cable division of Wometco Enterprises, a company started by his father, Col. Mitchell Wolfson Sr., after returning from World War II, where he witnessed the destructive power of mass propaganda in Nazi Germany. After Louis Wolfson II’s death, his wife, Lynn, sought to preserve Miami's history from WTVJ’s inventory and worked with Miami Dade College to create the Lynn & Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives. TV stations across South Florida and Fort Myers have donated footage, enriching the collection. In its 35,000 hours of history and 23 million feet of film, the archives record the history and culture of Florida, from the bathing beauties of the 1920s to the expansion and civil rights crusaders of the 1950s, Cuban exiles arriving in the 1960s, disco dancers of the 1970s and much more. Selected filmmakers will have access to the Lynn & Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives at no cost, and the jury will consider the archive’s use as a factor in the selection process. The Archives’ state-of-the-art, 10,000-square-foot facility at MDC Wolfson Campus is equipped with an air evacuation system and maintained at 50 degrees to preserve the footage, which has been digitized to protect these valuable resources. "We are thrilled to continue my family’s legacy of education and preservation of history," said Randi Wolfson Adamo, trustee of the Lynn & Louis Wolfson II Family Foundation. "It was vital to my grandmother that we keep and maintain the archives and remember our past to educate future generations. Otherwise, we're doomed to repeat things in history that aren't worth repeating. The Louies will ensure that South Florida's stories are told, remembered and cherished." Image by Billy Freeman/Unsplash Initially launched in 1989 as an award to a Florida filmmaking project using the Archives, The Louies have been completely reimagined and are now dedicated to supporting documentary filmmakers, ensuring South Florida's stories continue to be told. To apply and for more information, please visit the Miami Film Festival Website. The Miami Film Festival will host a special information session for The Louies at 6 p.m. on October 1. Register online . Winners will be announced in January 2025. - Free Advance Screening: Be the First to Watch Coppola's $120 Million Masterpiece 'Megalopolis'
You are invited to a free advance screening of Francis Ford Coppola's eagerly-awaited, $120 million epic "Megalopolis," starring Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza and Dustin Hoffman. The screening will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25. There is a limit of four tickets per registration. Please arrive early as seating is not guaranteed. MEGALOPOLIS | (2024) | WRITER-DIRECTOR: Francis Ford Coppola | WITH: Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman | RUNNING TIME: 2 HOURS 18 MINUTES | RATED R for sexual content, nudity, drug use, language and some violence | PROJECTED IN 4K DCP The city of New Rome is the main conflict between Cesar Catilina, a brilliant artist in favor of a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero. Between them is Julia Cicero, her loyalty divided between her father and her beloved. "After more than 40 years of idly fantasizing about the project (and more than 20 years of actively trying to finance it), Coppola is bringing "Megalopolis" to screens at a moment when his chosen medium is struggling to find a way forward, and the world around it seems teetering on the brink of collapse. "Just as in 63 B.C., when an evil patrician named Catiline appealed to a coalition of malcontents in a bid to overthrow the Republic, we are choked by the grip of delusional aristocrats and vertically integrated conglomerates whose lust for power and profit is only matched by their lack of foresight. Even with the past as our guide, we are at imminent risk of allowing the now to destroy the forever. "Coppola has always believed in America, but his faith is eroding by the second, and “Megalopolis” is nothing if not the boldest and most open-hearted of his many bids to stop time before it’s too late (an effort that has informed so much of his career, from “Peggy Sue Got Married” and “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” to “Youth After Youth” and “Jack”). As ever, he recognizes the futility in the attempt, even if his characters are sometimes a bit slow on the uptake. What elevates “Megalopolis” so far above those other films is how clearly the constant madness of its folly and the occasional disaster of its design serve as conduits for its writer/director/producer/financier’s entire creative ethos. Coppola might lack the imagination required to invent the new cinema that his new movie so desperately wishes it could will into being (he’s not even De Palma in that respect, let alone Godard), but he’s always seen the need for it better and more urgently than any of his contemporaries." -- David Ehrlich, Indiewire Admission is FREE but registration is required here . The film will start on time so please arrive early. There is a limit of four tickets per registration. - The Cartier Jewellery Institute Opens Its Doors for the 2024 European Heritage Days
On 21st and 22nd September 2024, the Cartier Jewellery Institute is opening its doors to the public for the third year running, honouring an exceptional event that is part of the European Heritage Days initiative supported by the French Ministry of Culture. Over 300 visitors will have the opportunity to discover Cartier’s exceptional jewellery craftsmanship and savoir-faire. In addition, for the 2024 edition of the event and for operation ‘Levez les yeux’ (Look up), created in partnership with the French Ministry of National Education, the Institute will welcome school classes and other groups on Friday 20th September. An immersive journey into the world of stones Planned specifically for this event, the visit to the Institute will unfold across the building’s three floors. To begin, on the first floor, visitors will be invited to follow the creation process of a jewellery piece: from gemstones to design to manufacture. Guests will be able to discover the various tools, techniques and skills used by the jewellers, setters, gem cutters and pearl stringers on-site. This will provide them with a rare opportunity to meet exceptional artisans and to talk to them about their specific skills. The second-floor areas are dedicated to stone expertise, displaying samples of materials, glyptic stones and examples of Cartier creations. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the craft of an expert gemmologist as they experience a day in the life of one of the artisans. They’ll also be able to handle a selection of gems, as if they were in one of the workshops. The third floor has been set up to allow each individual to sit at a workbench and take part in an introductory setting workshop led by instructors at the Cartier Jewellery Institute. Each guest will be able to set a creation to take home. Preservation, instruction and transmission Opened in 2002 in an 18th-century mansion in Paris’ 9th arrondissement, at the heart of the city's historic jewellery quarter, the Cartier Jewellery Institute pursues a three-fold mission: to preserve, train and transmit. Cartier is one of the very first Maisons to have created a space dedicated to the preservation and development of its savoir-faire and jewellery craftsmanship. Every year, this space allows the Institute to welcome 150 jewellery craftspeople out of the 340 artisans active in France. Cartier maintains strong links with both Parisian and regional schools in order to develop the jewellers of tomorrow. In 2023, the Jewellery Institute also took on around 30 interns and 20 apprentices. This year, a gem-setting class will be introduced to the curriculum in partnership with École Boulle, following the polishing class introduced last year. This third collaboration with European Heritage Days is a testament to Cartier’s ambition to promote and enhance the jewellery craftmanship it values so deeply. As part of a sustainable initiative, this event provides an opportunity to discover the world of jewellery savoir-faire and see behind the scenes of the workshops, taking in the artisans’ expertise and passion. It also shines a light on the work done by the Jewellery Institute to transmit its savoir-faire through strong links with various schools, in order to inspire future talents. Useful information The visits on 21st and 22nd September are free of charge. Booking is required. Registration opens on 2nd September at 9 a.m. on the official European Heritage Days platform.
