Daniel recently unveiled the music single "Movie" and its cinematic video, showcasing the melody of second chances in his life. As a filmmaker, he helms "Kinfolk: The Series" together with his wife, which is premiering on YouTube Channel's "Tough Love Series". Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and of Haitian descent, Daniel's journey started with a passion for music in his parents' church, leading to a prolific career. Beyond the spotlight, he mentors filmmakers, supports his Haitian community, and advocates for men's health. Daniel Augustin is set to make an enduring mark in the entertainment industry. Miami Living (ML): Daniel, it's such a pleasure to meet you! With so much happening in your career, let's start on a lighthearted note. What's the most exciting thing that has happened to you recently, either personally or professionally? Daniel Augustin: I can’t say what the most personal thing is just yet. It’s still too personal and not yet in a place to be shared; but professionally speaking, I just signed with new representation after a confusing year. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike made things a little weird in so many ways and created a lot of hesitation as it pertains to creatives being as active as possible. There were more excuses made than people seizing opportunity. It’s a bit nerve-wracking to start over with a new team, but it also allows for a fresh start when professional rigidity sets in. ML: Your journey in entertainment began with a deep-rooted connection to music at your parents' church. How do you believe your early experiences with music - including forming the gospel rap group Mav-7 at such a young age - have shaped your approach to creativity and storytelling? Daniel: My approach now involves implementing the boundaries I never knew how to, and allowing others to do the same. I think I can do that now because I have the framework from that first group. It was always easy talking about the big ideas we had, but boundaries were never a conversation piece when I was younger. Whenever someone would feel their boundaries were crossed, they’d just slowly start to disappear, and I’d end up assuming that maybe that person didn't like me anymore, or they didn't like that song. Believe it or not, that still happens to this day. Everyone isn’t evolving the same. One thing I love about the Loki show is those timelines because everyone is moving in a direction that suits the way they see life. The biggest difference now is that I’m more understanding of what’s going on internally. When things are getting chaotic around me or someone isn’t showing up anymore or answering calls –  there’s room for empathy – but there’s also room for me to give myself grace. It’s more about human nature and human psychology now than it is just about “our” dreams. ML: With your diverse background in music, acting, and filmmaking, is there a particular role or project that holds a special place in your heart, and if so, what makes it so memorable for you? Daniel: That’s a good question because of how many amazing experiences I’ve had to date. I want to say Wu-Tang because of what it meant to portray Rakim, or Rap Sh!t because it’s a show that incorporates the type of music and culture I’ve created for years. I would love to say David Makes Man because of that musical number where one of the corner boys passed away, and the whole block performs a beautiful going-home that involves an emotionally choreographed walk through the set with the casket – it was artistic and beautiful. But the most memorable experience I’ve had to date has been creating Kinfolk the Series alongside my wife and, by far, my favorite creative partner, my wife, Sh’Kia. That show was a creative dream. The little idea that could, if you will. I remember us talking about it at an Atlanta restaurant once over dinner, and then before we knew it, she was writing scripts, and I was giving notes. Before you know it, we were sending out breakdowns and auditioning actors we’d never met. Before we knew it, we had wardrobes, props, wigs, and locations set. I remember telling my team at the time not to send me any auditions for three months because all I was going to be pouring my energy into was this show, and they didn’t understand it. They thought it was career suicide, but it served as an amazing opportunity to evolve. What I lacked in experience, I made up for in education. I read and re-read those scripts until there were pictures in my head. I read Robert Rodriguez’s Rebel Without a Crew and sat down at my computer for months while piecing together what I felt is art. I learned things I’ve never read in books like something as simple as what it means for actors to share the screen. I found answers to my own questions. From editing to directing to cinematography, to working with theater actors and a handful of actors who had little to no experience, I had a wonderfully challenging experience that I wouldn’t trade in for any of those roles. Luckily, I got to do them all and didn’t have to, but I feel the industry is evolving from right under us. Studios need names, sure, but they need educated creatives. People who can sit in the editing room with another editor and offer value that serves the story. Working on this show and completing it is one of the greatest accomplishments of my young career. The other day, my 10th-grade English teacher told me she watched all six episodes, and she thoroughly enjoyed it. She told me it reminded her of Napoleon Dynamite, and that’s a compliment I’d never imagined getting. I did enjoy that film in high school but to create something that’s personal that resonates with others in a way that can be personal for them is like magic to me. ML: Your production company, Augustin Productions, has been behind several successful short films and digital series, including the acclaimed "Kinfolk" selected into Tribeca's 2022 Creator's Market.  What inspired you and your wife to create this production company? Daniel: Again, inactivity. Sh’Kia and I wanted to be able to have something to show for ourselves because saying you’re a creator or director or anything isn’t enough without proof. The chaos of not having opportunities became our ladder. Neither of us was getting much interesting work besides some co-stars here and there. I can’t count how many actors I see blame their representatives, when to me the answer I’m looking for is staring me back in the face… they can’t help me anymore than they already have. It’s officially time for me to help myself. If I’m the one saying I want something, it should show through my actions. Only about one in ten artists have the power to tell their representatives what they want, and it just happens. That’s my opinion. I’m not in that category, so my being ultra honest with myself seems to propel me in the direction I want to go. I’ve been self-generating opportunities since my career began, and Kinfok is no different. We haven’t exactly gotten the type of eyeballs on the project that has offered to pay us anything, but we paid ourselves an experience that a resume can’t express. That much was vital to the sincerity of our endeavors. ML: "Rap Sh!t" on HBO Max has gained significant praise, and your character Maurice has become a fan favorite. How did you prepare for this role, and do any aspects of Maurice's character resonate with you personally? Daniel: My preparation is musically inclined. I love how a song can subconsciously connect with the way my body feels and moves. Every scene has a tone and so for me, having a theme song for each scene is such a fun way to do my homework. Leaving your trailer, heading to set, and having a ton of conversations that, at times, have nothing to do with what I’m filming and waiting can be distracting. Having my headphones with me and finding a place where I can relax and let the song do the work is one of my favorite things to do on set. As for how Maurice resonates with me: first off, I’m a Haitian-American who grew up around Haitians, went to a Haitian church, and has been to Haiti on multiple occasions, so I have experiences the writers don’t need to have, and because of it, I was able to bring something to this character that an actor who isn’t Haitian couldn’t. When my mom and dad left Haiti for the United States, they lived in Miami. I was born in Fort Lauderdale, so proximity is a very close second. Lastly, while I was living in South Florida, before I could truly say I was a professional actor who was making a respectable living in the arts, I made a living just like Maurice does. I don’t mind talking about it now because those days are far gone, but I lost friends doing it. I used to pay for studio sessions with jwèt money, making sure everybody was fed and whatnot. I was always very much so a team player with a big heart and a sucker for skirts. ML: Your latest single and music video, "Movie," has garnered attention for its cinematic storytelling and captivating visuals. Can you share more about the inspiration behind the song and the creative process of bringing the story to life in a movie-like format? Daniel: We filmed that during the actors' and writers’ strike. I knew I wanted to work but was frustrated that I was, in a sense, “not allowed to". So, the work I wasn’t getting a chance to do inspired me to incorporate my acting and filmmaking work into my music endeavors in a visual sense. The treatment could’ve been completely different. I could’ve absolutely just been singing to a girl and doing that only –  but where’s the story? Where’s the fun? I want to make videos that, five to 10 years from now, are still worth watching because of the narratives. It’s not enough to just have bottles and girls on the beach. ML: Your commitment to mentoring aspiring filmmakers and serving the Haitian community is commendable. Can you share a specific moment or experience that solidified your passion for giving back to your community and supporting emerging talent in the film industry? Daniel: Working with actors, whether they may be experienced or don’t always know how talented they are, gives me an immense amount of joy. I don’t mind that I sound like a scratched-up Compact disc that’s skipping repeatedly, but again, my answer is Kinfok: the Series. One thing I tend to come across when I meet aspiring actors are individuals who want to develop a career but don’t know how to take the first step. Oftentimes, the most common thought is for us to get representation because reps are going to help us get jobs, and getting jobs is going to help us start a career, but they don’t know how to advocate for themselves when that falls through. With Kinfolk, I got to work with very talented performers. Half of them didn’t have representation but came out of the project with more footage than a regular co-star role would give them. This show was like a private company that came in, provided jobs, and stabilized a community of actors. At the time of production, two of the three leads of the show didn’t have representation, and neither of them had ever been a lead in a series. At this time, two of the three have representation, one of which (Sh’Kia) is now a series regular on two different shows (Kold x Windy on WE TV & Caught Up on BET+), and another (Amethyst Davis) has representation and has been booking like crazy, where when we were working together she had one co-star and stand-in work. Because of this show, actors got a chance to work in a controlled environment that put them first. When Sh’Kia and I produced our first project together, I directed it, but I was also an actor in the series, so I wasn’t truly able to devote all of my attention to them because I often was filming and performing. With Kinfolk, I took a step back from acting and decided to work from behind the camera. A handful of the actors have more of a background in theater (Toni Tenaj, Regina Hodges-Hopkins), and one of the leads never booked anything, but studied acting in school (Terrence Millan). Being able to communicate with them went beyond saying action and cut was an opportunity for all parties involved really. With that said, I look forward to what’s to come. I have a podcast in the works for multihyphenates, acting modules I’ll be releasing for my Instagram subscribers, and a potential book about my experiences with reps and what’s taken to get to this point, how and why you must advocate for yourself and what that even looks like. I’ve only just begun. ML: Outside of your busy schedule, you enjoy activities like boxing, playing basketball, creating music and reading. How do these personal interests contribute to your overall well-being, especially in the demanding world of entertainment? Daniel: The value of having some other activities can be life-changing. Without being well-rounded, I don’t think I’d have anything to offer the work I’m doing as an actor, filmmaker, or writer. If I’m writing, something must’ve happened in my personal life that I can write about. Whether it stems from something I read or something I experienced, I don’t think people really make stuff up. Everything comes from somewhere. When I don’t know what’s next in my career, trust there’s likely a book about it or a book that may lead to me knowing what I want to do next, even if that wasn’t what I was looking for. ML: Lastly, what message or impact do you hope to leave on the entertainment industry, and what are your aspirations for the future, both professionally and personally? Daniel: My aspirations are for a long and successful career. I aspire to live a life that can serve as a testimony of how to do it. I’m not saying this because I want to be copied or because I want to be the example; I’m saying it because I need to know what I want from myself. It’s not superstardom. I want to be the example I needed to see growing up. There are only two individuals I can think of off the top of my head who have laid out an example I can pull from: Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. Denzel often references Sidney Poitier, and Viola often references Meryl Streep. Seems like If you’re disciplined and understand the value of work ethic over ego, you can absolutely have a long career. I hope to leave an impact that my family can be proud of, but more importantly one that I can be proud of mostly. Miami Living (ML): Congratulations on your Grammy nomination for "Moments of Beauty"! What was your initial reaction when you found out, and how did you celebrate the news? Omar Akram: Thank you so much! When I found out about the Grammy nomination for "Moments of Beauty," I was truly overjoyed and deeply honored. The news filled me with a profound sense of gratitude and excitement. It's a dream come true to have my work recognized by the music community, especially in such a prestigious way. As for the celebration, I marked the occasion with a mix of reflection and appreciation. I took some time to look back on the incredible journey of creating the album, recalling the moments of inspiration and the emotional depth each composition holds. Being nominated alongside other talented and inspiring artists in the New Age, Ambient, or Chant album category is a testament to the love and encouragement from my peers in the music community. It's truly a "moment of beauty" in my life, and I'm eager to continue celebrating these remarkable moments together with everyone who has been a part of this journey. ML: Given your history with the Grammy Awards, being the first Afghan American to win a Grammy in 2013 and now being nominated again, how does the recognition feel, and what does it mean to you personally and professionally? Omar: Being the first Afghan-American artist in the world to win a Grammy Award in 2013 was an incredible milestone in my career, and now, receiving another Grammy nomination for Moments of Beauty holds profound significance for me both personally and professionally. The recognition fills me with a sense of overjoyed gratitude and deep honor. On a personal level, it's a dream come true to see my work appreciated by my peers in the music community at such a prestigious level. The nomination is not only a validation of my creative journey but also a reflection of the love and encouragement I've received from those who appreciate my art. Reflecting on the passage of time and the transformative power of creativity, each composition in Moments of Beauty represents a cherished life moment, and this nomination adds another true moment of beauty to my life. Can you share with us a specific moment or experience that directly inspired one of the compositions on the album? Omar: Certainly! One of the pieces, "Passage of Time," drew direct inspiration from a poignant moment on a family vacation in the delightful Danish town of Solvang, CA. As I shared a meal and quality time with my 11-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son, a powerful flashback occurred, transporting me 40 years back to a family dinner with my siblings and parents when we were all children. This particular moment became a profound source of inspiration for the entire album. It captures the essence of family, the passage of time, and the bittersweet emotions that come with looking back on cherished memories. The composition reflects the joy of those moments while also acknowledging the subtle tinge of sadness and nostalgia, creating a musical expression of the complexity of life experiences. Each note in the composition serves as a musical diary entry, allowing me to revisit and reflect on that specific life moment. It's a tribute not only to my personal journey but also to the universal theme of the fleeting nature of time and the beauty found in both the joyful and challenging moments of life. I'm delighted that this inspiration resonates through the album, connecting with listeners on a deeply personal level. ML: As someone who has traveled extensively, with sold-out tours in the USA, England, France, and China, what has been one of the most memorable moments or interactions with fans that stands out to you? Omar: Traveling and connecting with fans around the world has truly been an extraordinary journey, filled with rich experiences and meaningful connections. One of the most vivid and cherished memories unfolded during a sold-out show in Beijing, China, where the energy of the audience and their genuine appreciation for the music created an unforgettable atmosphere. Amidst the post-show interactions, a particular encounter with a fan stood out as exceptionally poignant. This fan shared with me how a specific composition from my repertoire had become more than just a piece of music—it had evolved into the soundtrack to a profoundly significant moment in their life. The personal and emotional connection they felt with the music was both humbling and inspiring. Listening to these heartfelt stories served as a powerful reminder of the transformative power inherent in music. It became evident that the melodies and rhythms went beyond mere entertainment; they had the ability to resonate with people on a deeply personal level. This encounter highlighted the capacity of music to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers, forging connections that reach the core of shared human experiences. These moments with fans in China and the diverse audiences encountered throughout my tours in various countries reaffirm the universal impact of music. It's not just about performing on stage; it's about creating an emotional bond that transcends borders. The rich tapestry of cultures and experiences from my multicultural background has significantly influenced the way I approach and express myself through music. Having been exposed to diverse cultural influences from a young age, my musical journey became a reflection of the fusion and interplay of various traditions. The ability to seamlessly navigate between different languages and cultural nuances has allowed me to draw inspiration from a wide array of musical traditions, incorporating elements that resonate with the essence of each culture. The multicultural background has added layers of complexity and richness to my compositions. Whether it's infusing traditional instruments, rhythms, or melodies, my music becomes a celebration of cultural diversity, transcending geographical boundaries. In my 20-year musical journey since "Opal Fire," I've embraced diverse experiences and exploration, crafting a distinctive identity. I've immersed myself in various genres, blending global influences to create a resonant sound. Key milestones encompass Billboard success and global tours in the U.S., England, France, and China, fostering connections with diverse audiences. Celebrating two decades, "Moments of Beauty" marks a new chapter, drawing inspiration from introspection and personal memories, reflecting a contemplative approach. Nature holds a special place for me, whether it's taking serene walks, enjoying the beauty of landscapes, or finding inspiration in the outdoors. Additionally, I find solace in activities like reading, allowing myself to get lost in the pages of a captivating book. Are there any collaborations, new themes, or innovative directions you're eager to explore in your upcoming work? Omar: I'm delighted to announce my involvement in the development of a workplace comedy TV show, adding an exciting dimension to my creative endeavors. The City of Wilton Manors invites everyone in the community to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Thunderbunny, a permanent public art installation, on January 25, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. in Justin Flippen Park (2109 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, FL, 33305). Artist Hunt Slonem, who created the monumental mosaic sculpture, will be in attendance to help cut the ribbon and officially welcome Thunderbunny to the City. “We’ve received an overwhelmingly positive response to this public art installation. Our residents and visitors love to stop and take pictures of Thunderbunny and share it with others, which is what public art is all about,” said Wilton Manors Mayor Scott Newton. “Thunderbunny is bright, colorful, and stands out, just like our Island City.” Created in 2021, Thunderbunny is a 13-foot tall, mirrored glass mosaic sculpture comprised of over 20,000 pieces of hand cut and hand applied glass. This seminal work was created as part of the artist’s forthcoming public sculpture garden exhibition program, Huntopia, debuting in May 2024 at San Antonio Botanic Garden. An internationally renowned neo-expressionist artist, Slonem is known for his series of bunnies, butterflies, and tropical birds- some of the native animals found right here in the South Florida community. “The point of the sculpture is to make people joyous and to celebrate life and revere the rabbit,” said Hunt Slonem. “I am honored and thrilled to present this important artwork to the Wilton Manors Community.” Slonem’s work has been featured in museums across the globe, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Whitney, the Miro Foundation, and the New Orleans Museum of Art. Thunderbunny is one of over two dozen public art installations in Wilton Manors, with more planned in the coming year as part of the City’s public art plan. It’s going to be no big surprise to anyone who lives there, but when it comes to sports, Miami is up there with the best of them. Image by joe calomeni / Pixabay In fact, in a 2023 survey it was ranked number 6 in the list of best US cities for sports, beaten only by LA, Boston, Pittsburgh, New York and Dallas. While it’s the city’s five major league teams that get most of the attention, there’s plenty to enjoy at every level for fans of sport. For example, the college teams from the University of Miami have their own devoted band of followers of the Hurricanes while teams from the Florida Atlantic and International Universities are also very well supported. Then there are the ten other professional sports teams playing everything from rugby to e-sports as well as the more traditional activities of soccer and baseball. So the fact that Hard Rock Bet Florida is now available is very welcome news for fans who like to add a little interest to their sports by having a wager or two while they watch any of these major teams. Miami Dolphins The Fins are in their 54th season in the NFL and their second under the leadership of head coach Mike McDaniel. Since his arrival, they have seen a steady improvement in performance and, by January 2024, were well placed in second position in the AFC East on an equal footing with the Buffalo Bills. There are hopes that they could be on their way to revisiting their glory days of the early 70s when they not only won the Super Bowl twice but were also the first ever team to go through a whole season unbeaten, a feat they accomplished in 1972. They’ve also been making waves this season. Their Week 3 defeat of the Denver Broncos was the first time since 1966 that any team has scored 70 points in a game. Florida Panthers Hockey doesn’t seem like a game particularly suited to the Florida climate, but the Panthers have a loyal following nonetheless. They have seen some turbulent times since the franchise was first awarded back in 1992, but there are signs that they are now firmly on the up and up, thanks to star players like captain Alexsander Barkov and his deputy, Matthew Tkachuk. In the 2022-23 season this saw them make their way into the playoffs for the Stanley Cup in which they were drawn against the heavily fancied Boston Bruins in the first round. Defying all the odds, they went on to beat them 4-3 in the seven-game series. They then moved on to taking on the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Carolina Hurricanes. It was only when they met with the Vegas Golden Knights in the final that it all came unstuck with a five-game defeat. They became an expansion team in MLB back in 1993 season when they were known as the Florida Marlins, becoming the Miami Marlins nine years later for the 2012 season. 1997 and 2003 were the highlight years for the team when they won the World Series. They have also qualified for the playoffs on two other occasions, in 2020 and, most recently, in 2023 when they lost in the wild card round to the Philadelphia Phillies. However, with the lowest winning percentage of any MLB team ever, it does seem like there’s a mountain to climb if they ever want to really reach the top tier. Miami Heat Next season will be the Heat’s 36th in the NBA and they will enter it in pretty good shape. The 2022-23 season saw them becoming divisional champions with a victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Going into the playoffs they went on to beat the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks to create arguably one of the biggest upsets in playoff history. With further wins over the New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics they met the Denver Nuggets in the finals, sadly losing 4-1. Not only is Inter Miami CF part owned by British soccer legend David Beckham, but it also now has the world’s leading footballer on the team. Lionel Messi has won the prestigious Ballon D’Or no less than eight times and ever since his signing was announced back in July 2023 replica number 10 shirts with his name on have been like gold-dust. It’s also no coincidence that, since he signed, the club has enjoyed its first ever Leagues Cup win. So Miami is undoubtedly a sporting paradise for fans. Presenting a profile of modern Black creativity, a new exhibition at The Wolfsonian–Florida International University spotlights the forces and figures behind a major American cultural movement and centers the museum’s exceptional holdings of rare books from the Harlem Renaissance. Silhouettes: Image and Word in the Harlem Renaissance—now open in Miami Beach, 100 years after Harlem’s emergence as a global cultural capital—joins seminal books and periodicals with paintings, prints, and sculpture, including key loans, that together offer an evocative glimpse into the African American experience in the first half of the 20th century. “Silhouettes tells the story of a people,” said Christopher Norwood, a Miami-based collector, gallerist, and founder of Hampton Art Lovers, who curated the exhibition in consultation with Shawn Christian, professor of English at Florida International University, and Wolfsonian staff. “The Harlem Renaissance is the most important and comprehensive art movement in American history, introducing the modern world to free Black thought, culture, and aspiration,” he added. “The Wolfsonian is particularly proud to be in partnership with Fisk University and Florida Memorial University. HBCU Museums have been preserving the legacy of African American Art when few institutions would,” said Wolfsonian director Casey Steadman. “It is largely due to their vision and collectors—like our founder Mitchell Wolfson, Jr.—that we have these works to share with the world.” A seminal work from the Wolfsonian collection, The New Negro (1925) helps set the stage for the exhibition by framing the unprecedented migration of African Americans from the rural South to northern cities in the early 20th century. An illustrated collection of writings by poets, novelists, and intellectuals, the book identified the new manners and ways of life that resulted from the Great Migration, captured in paintings, prints, sculpture, photography, theater, and literary works from the 1920s onward. Illustrated publications, in particular, emerged as a canvas for a new generation of modern artists as well as a way to reach audiences beyond Harlem itself. The exhibition displays covers and interior illustrations from 39 books, as well as more than 60 paintings, prints, photographs, and sculptures. Throughout, it focuses special attention on the work of Aaron Douglas, whose signature silhouetted figures have become a durable visual icon of the Harlem Renaissance. Enter the New Negro What we know as the Harlem Renaissance was called the “New Negro” movement in its heyday, from the 1920s to 1940s. Artworks and literature from this movement challenged demeaning stereotypes and called upon Black people to assert their own self-determination, offering complex stories and nuanced portraits of everyone from cultural luminaries to anonymous figures. The Road to Racial Uplift In the wake of a renewed assault on their civil and political rights that began in the late 19th century, educated Black people assigned themselves responsibility for the welfare of the race. This ideology, known as racial uplift, resulted in the creation of work ranging from inspirational symbolism to portraits of accomplished individuals, as well as new investigations of African and African American history. Beyond Harlem The reach and perspective of the Harlem Renaissance extended over all parts of the United States and beyond its borders. Artists associated with the movement lived in California, Washington, D.C., and abroad in Paris for extended periods. Chicago’s concentration of artists, writers, and musicians constituted a “Black Renaissance” of its own. The focus of Black writers and artists transcended life in Harlem and the rest of the country—Haiti, as the first Black republic in the Western Hemisphere, inspired many writings and artworks as well. Harlem on Stage The same currents that animated the literature and visual art of the Harlem Renaissance flowed through music, dance, and theater. African American performers in these fields found expanded opportunities, while works that grew out of Black popular culture won newfound acclaim and respect. A series of photographs by Carl Van Vechten of actors, dancers, and musicians, as well as an excerpt from a short film featuring the Duke Ellington Orchestra, highlights this section of the exhibition. “A lot has changed in America since the Harlem Renaissance, however many of the issues addressed are still relevant today,” said Shawn Christian. “The more one immerses oneself in these texts and images, the more it feels like they were created not so long ago.” Image Book cover (detail), For Freedom: A Biographical Story of the American Negro, 1927.
