- Do You Need a Second Booster Shot? An Epidemiologist Scoured the Latest Research & Has Some Answers
The CDC recommends the second booster for those over 50 who received their initial booster shot at least four months earlier. Scott Olson via Getty Images News In late March 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized a second booster shot of COVID-19 vaccines for vulnerable populations in the U.S., a move that was soon after endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People ages 50 years and older and certain immunocompromised individuals who are at higher risk for severe disease, hospitalization and death are eligible four months after receiving the initial booster shot. A second booster shot is equivalent to a fourth dose for people who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna mRNA series or a third dose for those who received the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine. In Israel, people in these same vulnerable categories began receiving fourth doses in January 2022. The U.K. recently started administering a fourth dose for people 75 years and older and coined it a “spring booster.” In Germany, those over 60 years old are now eligible for a fourth shot of the mRNA series. I am an epidemiologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Public Health and founder and author of Your Local Epidemiologist, a newsletter translating the latest public health science for everyday use. The latest recommendations have left many wondering about the importance of boosters for protection against COVID-19. Does the third shot wane over time? Is a fourth dose necessary? What if you’ve had a previous infection? After reviewing the mounting body of research on how the immune system shifts over time following each dose, it is clear that another booster for vulnerable populations has meaningful benefit with very little risk. The FDA’s authorization provides the option of a second booster shot for vulnerable populations, but the agency stopped short of making it a broad recommendation. Vaccine effectiveness following the first booster dose There is clear evidence that a third dose of the mRNA series – or the first booster dose – was and still is critical for ensuring a robust immune response against the omicron variant for all age groups. This is in part because the immune response wanes over time and also in part because omicron has proved to be partially effective at evading immunity from the existing COVID-19 vaccines and from prior infections. But then the question becomes: How well is immunity from the first booster holding up over time? The best real-time data to follow on vaccine effectiveness over time is in the U.K. The U.K. Health Security Agency currently has follow-up data for 15 weeks after the third dose, or first booster shot. In its latest report, the effectiveness of vaccines against infection wanes significantly after a third dose. In the U.K. report, vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization is holding up much better compared to effectiveness against infection. But even protection against hospitalization is slightly decreasing over time. While this data is insightful, 15 weeks of follow-up data isn’t very helpful in the U.S. because many Americans got their third dose up to 24 weeks ago. A recent study assessed the durability of a Moderna third dose after six months. Researchers found waning levels of neutralizing antibodies six months after the booster. The CDC also found significant waning protection against emergency department and urgent care visits five months after the first booster. Vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization decreased a little but largely held up five months after the booster. The studies mentioned above pooled all age groups. But researchers know that older adults don’t mount as durable an immune response as younger people. This explains why breakthrough infections have occurred at a much higher rate among people ages 65 and up. A recent study in the Lancet assessed the durability of a third dose among people ages 76 to 96 years old. Researchers found that the third dose improved neutralizing antibodies, but in the face of omicron, antibodies still dropped substantially following a booster. President Biden gets his second booster shot on camera, and Dr. Anthony Fauci discusses the benefits of a booster. Data on the second booster dose/fourth shot Now that Israel has been delivering a fourth dose for several months, researchers have some data to rely on to assess its effectiveness. There are three studies that have been released so far, one which has not yet been peer-reviewed. In one study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists assessed the rates of infection and severe illness after a fourth dose – or second booster – among more than a million people ages 60 and older in Israel. The researchers found that after a fourth dose, the rate of COVID-19 infection was two times lower than after a third dose. However, this protection quickly waned after six weeks. They also found the rate of severe disease was four times lower compared to those who received only three doses. It’s important to note, though, that hospitalizations among both groups were very low. Importantly, another study assessed the effectiveness of a fourth dose among younger health care workers in Israel. The results confirmed that antibody levels dropped significantly five months after the third dose. Unfortunately, the effectiveness of the fourth dose was no different from the effectiveness of a third dose in this population of younger health care workers. In other words, there may not be meaningful benefit of a second booster of the same formula for young, healthy populations. Researchers carried out a third study, one that has not yet been peer-reviewed, at a large health care system in Israel among people aged 60 to 100 years. Among 563,465 patients in the health care system, 58% received a second booster. During the study period, 92 people who received the second booster died compared to 232 people who had only the first booster. In other words, the second booster equated to a 78% reduction in death compared to the first booster alone. What if you had a COVID-19 infection with omicron? The combination of being both vaccinated and having experienced a COVID-19 infection is called “hybrid immunity.” More than 35 studies have shown that hybrid immunity offers complimentary and broad protection. This is because immunity from the vaccines targets the spike protein – after which the COVID-19 vaccines were designed – and infection-induced immunity aims more broadly at the whole virus. So, it is not unreasonable to skip a second booster with a confirmed infection of omicron. This doesn’t mean that people should purposefully get SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. But it is clear that hybrid immunity is a viable path to protection. In short, there is strong evidence that a fourth dose – or second booster – provides meaningful protection among vulnerable populations, including people over 60. So another booster is reasonable for some groups. And while a fourth dose may benefit a select group, it is far more important that people receive their first, second and third doses. The purpose of which is to collect real time data and provide an accurate snapshot of members’ needs to ensure its best possible services are available to deploy. Sea Tow® Shares Results from Annual Member Survey. Insight & Trends Capture Snapshot of Members’ Preferences and Needs The survey, which generated over 7,800 responses, captured feedback on a variety of topics. Despite the sharp rise in fuel costs, over 50% of boaters reported no anticipated change of their boating season activity due to this current uptick in prices. Results also showed that over 65% of boaters do not plan to make any boat renovations or improvements this year. Sea Tow members prioritize their time spent on the water, with 85% of boat usage identified primarily for fishing and cruising purposes. Additionally, over 51% of boaters surveyed say they either have a vacation by boat planned or are seriously considering it, with only 10% reporting fuel costs as a deterrent. After past seasons of uncertainty, members are ready to get out and resume travel activities through boating. The survey also showed that of Sea Tow’s services, over 56% of members ranked free boat towing as the most valued aspect of membership services, in part correlating with members’ greatest concern of engine failure. These concerns along with other valuable feedback help Sea Tow best tailor its services, resources and education to both new and longstanding members. “At Sea Tow, we value our members’ feedback and with this valuable insight, we can better target our services while continuing to provide a superior level of customer service,” said Sea Tow President Kristen Frohnhoefer. “Our member survey has proven to be an effective way to communicate with members and allows us to best anticipate these needs now and into the future.” With a Sea Tow membership, boaters pay one annual rate and receive the most comprehensive member benefits available in the market. - Artist Haiiileen Releases Limited Edition Aura Mirrors
Miami born artist Haiiileen, real name Aileen Quintana, debuts her first collector’s item: Aura Mirrors on Monday, May 3rd. Haiiileen is known for using light to transform large venues into spaces for artistic expression and social engagement. What makes Haiiileen’s practice so intrinsically distinctive is her synesthesia, a rare sensory condition which transforms everything she hears into visual imagery. For her, it is essential to explore emotional language and self-evolution, driven by a never-ending curiosity. This has led her to study physics, she is able to grasp a full understanding of how sound, light, and color all interact with one another. Her immersive environments and installations have been featured in the Frost Science Museum, the Bass Museum as well as ARTECHOUSE, to name a few. Haiiileen continuously exhibits her ability to create thought-provoking material that provides a deep expression and experimental approach to the environmental perceptions and conventional ideas of reality through her work. During the isolation period of the pandemic, Haiiileen began experimenting to create a formula that transfers color into mirrors. Using color theory to refract light and color, the chemical mixture features a marble-like appearance creating a seamless gradient of colors. Through this process, her first limited edition item was born: Aura Mirrors. “When people look at themselves in these mirrors, it's like they are able to look within themselves and see their internal light and love in the colors of their auras,” says Haiiileen. “The colors of the auras are a self-reflection of how you might perceive yourself on the inside, now projected back to you from the reflection in the mirror.” The hexagon shaped mirrors (Width: 13″ Depth: 1.5″ Height: 15″) represent the center of universal coherence, tying everything together and linking everything back. 50 mirrors, all made by hand, will debut on her site, on Monday, May 3rd, priced at $2,250 ea. See your inner light and love in the colors of your auras. The concept of nurturing connections through art grounds all her projects, including HaiiiLabs, a nonprofit that provides supplies and offers workshops for fellow artists and art organizations. As a first-generation Cuban American, she appreciates the immigrant-driven hustle behind South Florida’s art scene and the challenges these creators experience in bringing their work into the spotlight. As for her, fostering art wherever it emerges is both a social and aesthetic call to action. By ML Staff. Image courtesy of Haiiileen

- Can I Still Get Medical Bills Paid If I Was At Fault In An Accident?
Being involved in a car accident in Florida may be stressful and overwhelming. Florida is a no-fault state regarding auto accidents, meaning that all drivers must carry their insurance to cover the costs of their medical bills in case of a car accident. Personal injury law is complex, so you should consider seeking legal assistance from a personal injury lawyer. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Insurance Pays Medical Bills After a Car Accident All Florida drivers must carry Personal Injury Protection Insurance (PIP). A Personal Injury Protection (PIP) car insurance policy can cover up to 80% of the medical bills and 60% of the lost wages up to $10,000. As stated by Florida's No-Fault Auto Insurance laws, all drivers must have a minimum of $10,000 of PIP coverage to register and operate a vehicle. Suppose you are heading to the emergency room, then the hospital will first bill your PIP insurance and then go for other insurance sources. Even more interesting is that the PIP insurance does not just cover the person listed as a driver on the insurance policy. But it also covers any family members that live in the house. Someone injured in a car accident can look to other household members to check whether the PIP coverage can step in for their medical bills. There are still some exceptions where PIP insurance does not apply, such as passengers in buses and public transport or passengers in taxis or ridesharing. However, while PIP insurance may be efficient for those not having permanent injuries or pain, PIP is not equipped to handle significant trauma. Other Options Available to Pay for Your Medical Costs Aforementioned, your PIP insurance will be billed first before looking for other sources of insurance. If you are at fault for a Florida car accident, there are several options available to pay for your medical costs, such as: MedPay Medical Payment Insurance Coverage or MedPay is an optional benefit that can help cover your Miami car accident costs. Depending on your selection coverage, MedPay can cover expenses PIP insurance does not reimburse. Moreover, MedPay covers your PIP's co-pay for up to $2,000. This insurance consists of additional coverage to pay for any medical bills. MedPay covers 100% of your medical bills, while PIP covers only 80%. Health Insurance If your medical bills exceed the total amount of your auto insurance, learn that you can submit a claim to your health insurance providers at this stage. However, you may need to exhaust as much as possible through your car insurance before heading to health care benefits. Medicare and Medicaid Medicare and Medicaid are federal programs that may help you pay for your medical bills if you are involved in a car accident. You will, however, be asked to reimburse some or all of these costs. Workers' compensation Suppose you have been involved in a car accident while performing your job-related duties. In that case, your employer's workers' compensation coverage must pay all your medical bills and deductibles (co-pays, transportation expenses, and the like). What Losses Will My Insurance Cover If I'm at Fault? If you are at fault for a car accident, learn that you can be sued for damages if the victim has sustained significant scarring, disfigurement, permanent disabilities, loss of body function, or if someone has died. Additionally, you can be sued for damages such as: Medical bills and expenses (therapy costs, long-term personal care, in-home health care) Loss of quality of life or enjoyment of life Loss of income and benefits Physical pain and suffering Emotional distress and mental anguish Travel costs to and from medical appointments The personal injury claim's value typically depends on many factors, including the type of injury, the severity of the injury, or total financial losses. Regardless of who was at fault in Miami, Florida, all drivers turn to their PIP insurance. The insurance will pay for your medical bills and other injury-related losses after a car accident. However, PIP insurance usually does not cover your car repairs or further property damage, so you may need to purchase collision coverage in addition to PIP. Being in a no-fault state may have more significant advantages, as you will receive your compensation faster. You won't need to prove fault to receive your benefits because each driver or victim will file a claim with the PIP insurance company to get coverage. By ML Staff. - How Often Do You Need to Change Air Filters in Miami?
Even though when you bought your new AC equipment, you promised to take care of it faithfully, or whenever your AC technician comes by to service your unit, you get chastised for not changing your filter often enough, you may still be putting this task off simply because it’s out of your mind. So, before your AC system suffers a breakdown, let’s find out how often you should change your home’s merv 8 air filters. It may be more or less frequent than you think. Some factors that impact how often you need to change your air filter in Miami are: The number of people living in the home – This means that a family would need more frequent air filter changes than someone living alone. The number of hours the system is used – If you leave the unit on all day, even when nobody is home, you will need to change your filter as often as once a month. If this is a second home or if you turn it off during the hours when everyone is either at school or work, you may get away with changing the filter less often. Your pets – If there are pets in the home, don’t allow more than 60 days to go by without a filter change. Adding extra pets means that the filter may have to be changed even more often. The type of flooring in your home – If there is carpeting, fibers from your floor can end up in your air conditioning filter. This is not the case if your floors have wood or tile, which would allow you more time between filter changes. If you or someone else in your household smokes – Smoking fills up your filter much faster, calling for more frequent filter replacements. This also applies to people who are habitually burning candles in their homes since candles also generate smoke that can clog air filters. The respiratory conditions of those who share the home with you – If there are people with asthma or other respiratory ailments in your home, you want to give them the cleanest air possible. Change your filters every month. The size of your filter – Generally, home air conditioning units use 20 x 20 x 1 filters. If your unit requires a smaller filter, it will fill up much faster and require more frequent changes. The type of filter you use – There are several types of air conditioner filters on the market today. You may buy a pleated filter with a larger surface area to capture particles or go for a tackified or ring pad filter that gets filled up much faster. Review the recommendations of the manufacturer of your equipment or ask your AC technician to tell you what filter will work best, considering the above points and the level of humidity in your area. The age of your HVAC system – You may notice that your AC does not give you the cool air you have become accustomed to. This may be because the filter is clogged and needs to be changed and because you have an old system that is not as efficient as it used to be. If you suspect that this is the case, call an AC professional to assess the situation and determine whether the time has come to buy a new unit or if the problem is something much simpler, like a filter needing to be replaced. Ultimately, you want to have a clean filter as often as possible since this will make your equipment work better and give your loved ones cleaner air. By ML Staff.
