- Safety in & Near the Water: A Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician Offers Tips
A lifeguard shortage in many parts of the U.S. means an increased drowning risk at pools and beaches this summer. Earlier this summer, SciLine interviewed Linda Quan, a pediatric emergency medicine physician and professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine, about drowning risks and what people should know to keep themselves and their children safe. Can you share some statistics about drowning in the United States? Linda Quan: About 4,000 people die every year from drowning in the United States. It’s one of the three leading causes of unintentional injury and death of those under 29 in this country. Toddlers, those 1 to 4 years of age, have the highest drowning rates of all age groups. And that’s true throughout the world. The recurring scenario in our country is that these toddlers fall into their home pool, to which they’ve gotten unsupervised access. The second-highest drowning rate is among teenagers in most states. This age group, and adults, drown mostly in open water – that means lakes or rivers, the ocean or ponds, and usually they’ve been swimming or boating in those settings. We’re also seeing an emerging epidemic of drowning among adults over age 45. And this hasn’t been well studied, but it’s mostly men, when they’re fishing or boating or swimming and not wearing life jackets. About 50% of the time, they’re drinking alcohol. This summer, some pools and beaches will not have lifeguards on duty. How can people stay safe? Linda Quan: You have to choose the site that you swim in wisely. You should put in extra effort to find that beach that does have a lifeguard. You must provide adequate supervision. Put away the cellphone or the book and not chat while the kids or teenagers are in the water. You also need to be within arm’s reach of the child or novice swimmer. The other thing you can do to help is to put your weak swimmers in life jackets. And get those people who can’t swim well – and again that could include your teenager – into swim lessons so they can learn the skills they need. Are there differences along racial, socioeconomic or gender lines when it comes to drowning risks? Linda Quan: Drowning is not a fair injury. Drowning risk varies among races and cultures and sexes in our country. White people have the lowest drowning rates overall, but they have the highest drowning rates in 1-to-4-year-olds. In our country, Native Americans and Alaskan Natives have the highest drowning rates in all age groups and in all settings. Nationally, Black people have higher drowning rates than white people. And these disparities between Black people and white people become really pronounced in swimming pool drownings involving kids; Black school-age children have higher drowning rates. These disparities are due to what we call social determinants of health, which include the history of involvement these families have with water activities, lack of access to swim lessons in their communities and lower swim ability rates. What is the right age to start swim lessons, and how long should children stay enrolled in them? Linda Quan: Swim lessons is a vague term and can be used in different ways with different goals at different ages. The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends swim lessons can be started at age 1. And that’s really more an effort to have the child learn to be comfortable in the water, to enjoy the water and have a fun time with their parents. Later, when the child is comfortable and developmentally ready, they’ll start gaining physical psychomotor skills, which includes control of all four extremities and breathing. We know that kids can most efficiently put it all together at age 5. But it takes a long time to achieve swim competency. It’s not easy, and parents should be aware of where their kid is at in the process. We know many parents are taking their kids out of swim lessons before they acquire all the skills we’d like them to have. And so parents need to understand it’s not a matter of one session. It’s really multiple sessions, maybe even 20. You have to be in it for the long haul. What should people know about what it looks like or sounds like when someone is in trouble in the water? Linda Quan: If people look like they’re in trouble, assume they’re in trouble. The other thing is never assume that you’re going to hear someone who’s in trouble. Once you get into trouble, you are struggling to breathe, you are literally aware you are dying, and your only mission is to try to breathe. You can’t talk and you can’t shout. So do not expect to be able to hear someone drown. Instead, watch carefully and with constant attention. What should you do if someone is in trouble? Linda Quan: Unless you’ve taken a lifeguard class, you’re limited. Don’t go into the water. You should throw something at them that floats. Some beaches have those round ring buoys or even lifeguard rescue tubes, like you see on “Baywatch.” Use anything that floats – it could be a Styrofoam cooler, even sneakers or Crocs that float. If the person in trouble can grab onto it and just float a little bit, it might help them. You can also reach out with something long, like a tree branch or a shepherd hook from the pool area. So reach, throw and don’t go in unless you’ve been trained how because we see too many people dying during a rescue – usually fathers who are trying to save their child. - Preventing Obesity Starts in the Grocery Aisle with Food Packaging
In 2018, Statistics Canada reported that nearly one in three Canadians were obese. Similar figures have been reported in Australia, but more concerning is the United States, where over forty percent of the population is obese. Obesity is not the only diet-related illness to be concerned about — diabetes is just as prevalent. When it comes to such diseases, diet and physical activity help reduce the chance of being diagnosed. In fact, when it comes to Type 2 diabetes, diet and physical activity can prevent 50 per cent of it. Food packaging plays an important role in diet-related illnesses. We live in a food environment that prioritizes marketing, sometimes to the detriment of our health. Consider the average supermarket, where there can be upwards of 60,000 different products in a store. With so much competition, food marketers need to grab the attention of consumers so they buy their products, not a competitor’s. This is why product packaging is so important. Food marketing uses a variety of tactics, like using bright, bold colours and eye-popping visuals, to try and persuade consumers to buy certain products. They also change the size of food images shown on products — the size of the chip on Dorito’s packaging or the size of the bread on a jar of peanut butter, for example. Bigger is better Our recent research looked at how something seemingly innocuous, like the size of food images on product packaging, can impact how likely it is that someone buys a product. While the size of this image might appear to be harmless, our research found that it can increase the food’s appeal to consumers: the larger the image, the better tasting consumers believe the food will be, which increases the chance of them purchasing the product. The reason for this is a concept called mental imagery, which suggests that the way people visualize a product in their minds can make them think a product is better, higher quality or, in our case, tastier. This has implications when it comes to food choice. When thinking about what foods are most appealing, junk foods, such as chips, popcorn and candy, come to mind. These kinds of products often have large, exaggerated images of food on their packaging. Since the size of the food image on these products are bigger, it makes consumers psychologically salivate more, persuading them into buying and eating these unhealthier foods. Colour matters Ours isn’t the only research that has been done on health habits and food product packaging. Similar research has also found that the colour of food packaging and the location of food images on a product also impacts whether or not consumers are more likely to buy a product. When it comes to colours, red significantly increases a food’s perceived taste, while green increases the food’s perceived healthiness. Food images that are located higher on the package suggest that the food is “light” and therefore “healthy,” making it more likely for a consumer to purchase the product. Previous studies have also found that junk food brand names are easily remembered by children, and parents often listen to their children when making food choices. Also, the use of traffic light signals on food labels promotes healthier food choices by allowing people to identify the nutritional content directly on the food package. Knowing and understanding how appearance impacts food desirability is crucial for marketers and has resulted in a special visual language among consumers and products. This allows, for example, people with diabetes and hypertension to quickly locate foods that are appropriate for their needs in a grocery store. However, it also makes some consumers vulnerable to marketing ploys when they aren’t aware of how advertisers are manipulating them. Healthy shopping strategies There are some strategies consumers can use when shopping to help maintain healthy habits. Instead of focusing on the images of food on packaging, we recommend that consumers focus more on the nutritional needs and requirements. Consumers should read the entire nutritional label front and back to try to make the best informed decision possible and try not to be swayed by what the image on a package looks like. Don’t let the size of the food image tempt you: some Pringles or gummy bears is fine as a little indulgence, but if you’re tempted by these food products every time you step into your local grocery, it can have serious consequences for your heath. Food product packaging doesn’t just have implications for consumers, but for policymakers as well. Most governments, including Canada’s, focus on nutrition labels and how food marketers advertise to consumers of all ages, such as rules limiting junk food ads during Saturday morning cartoons. But regulation should start even more fundamentally with the packaging itself. While it might seem extreme to regulate the size of a scoop of ice cream on a box of Chapman’s, food image size is especially relevant when it comes to junk food. If we want to reduce the prevalence of diet-related health issues, like obesity and diabetes, regulating the size of images, which is what we see first and foremost in the grocery aisle, on food products might just be what’s needed. - The Lincoln Eatery Welcomes BBQ & Craft Company
The Lincoln Eatery, Miami’s No.1 food hall, as listed by the Miami New Times, announced the grand opening of its first barbecue concept, BBQ & Craft Company. As the first barbecue hotspot in Miami Beach, the concept will be serving up traditional BBQ items featuring pulled pork, beef brisket, chicken wings, ribs and more. BBQ & Craft Company was founded by pitmaster Anthony Nicolosi with the goal to bring authentic barbecue-style fare to South Florida. His first location at 947 Brickell Ave. gained attention on The Infatuation as having a menu with “impressive big-name smoked meats” and as one of the best spots to find chicken wings in Miami. BBQ & Craft Company features top-quality prime meats and specialty meats all cooked to BBQ pitmaster standards for Miami locals and visitors alike. “As the first BBQ spot in Miami Beach, I am honored to be able to provide locals and visitors the opportunity to experience real, authentic BBQ,” said Nicolosi. “Real BBQ takes patience and passion, not everybody can smoke meat for 12-16 hours.” Before he became a master smoker of meats, Nicolosi was a professional racecar driver who confused grilling with authentic barbecuing techniques. Through interactions with fans during his racing days, he was generously offered a rack of smoked ribs and selection of smoked meats. The wood fire and slow smoking of the meat piqued his interest and sparked a new appreciation for barbecue. Nicolosi attended Lang Smokers School, the No.1 BBQ team in Georgia, where he studied under Darryl Strickland as well as former partner of Myron Mixon BBQ. Since then he has traveled the country as a Florida BBQ Association competition judge drawing inspiration from places like Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas. With flavors heavily inspired by outside states, Nicolosi has adapted the best flavors from around the country to his own recipes and branded BBQ & Craft Company. “The Lincoln Eatery community is very excited to welcome BBQ & Craft Company to the community,” said general manager, Roberto Hermosilla. “It’s time for Miami Beach to have a true smoke-style barbecue restaurant and we are happy to introduce the barbecue concept to the diverse culinary scene of South Florida.” The new outpost at The Lincoln Eatery will include notable appetizers like the Deviled Eggs ($9), served with a house-made BBQ sauce, crispy pork rinds topped with pickled mustard seeds and dill; the Crispy St. Louis Ribs ($14), are cooked to perfection and topped with a house BBQ glaze and cornbread crumble. Also on the menu are Dry Rub Wings ($12 for 6 or $20 of 12), covered in a Alabama-style white BBQ sauce; and the Cupcake Cornbread ($3), with a spiced maple butter. BBQ & Craft Company will serve a selection of sandwiches served with a choice of seasoned fresh cut fries or coleslaw. All sandwiches can be naked upon request and substitution of sides will be an additional $2. The Beef Brisket ($18), is a fiery chopped brisket topped with refreshing watercress, smoked red onions, and creamy horseradish crème fraiche served on a Kaiser roll perfect to satisfy anyone’s hunger. BBQ & Craft Company also has a flavorful and tangy Pulled Pork Sandwich ($16), topped with Carolina mustard BBQ sauce, and braised red cabbage served on a Kaiser roll. Other sandwiches include the Pulled Chicken ($19), a crispy chicken skin sandwich coated with Alabama white sauce and a spicy BBQ sauce; and the Craft Prime Burger ($18), topped with BBQ & Craft Company’s house steak sauce, porcini mayo, a creamy smoked gouda cheese, and fried pork belly on a brioche bun. The mouthwatering BBQ Plates are served with a choice of two sides and house pickles. The menu features items like the Pulled Pork, a white marble smoked pork shoulder available for 8oz ($18) or 16oz ($28); or the Smoked Half Chicken ($19), a Bell & Evans all-natural chicken. Other famous BBQ plates are the Beef Brisket, a zesty Creekstone Prime beef brisket available for 8oz ($20) or 16oz ($36); or the St. Louis Spare Ribs, available at half rack for $20 or full rack for $36. - PONANT and Smithsonian Journeys Expedition in Panama & Costa Rica
PONANT is collaborating with Smithsonian Journeys on a series of co-branded sailings for 2023. Each of the 21 itineraries will be led by two Smithsonian Journey Experts—whether an art historian, a solar astrophysicist, or an international relations expert—whose expertise and knowledge will shed new light on a destination and deepen travelers’ immersion in place. Among the new sailings is an eight-day cruise aboard Le Bellot to Panama and Costa Rica. The immersive journey will combine a crossing of the Panama Canal, snorkeling and swimming on the beautiful Holandes Cayes, excursions in the Darién and Manuel Antonio National Parks, and encounters with local Indigenous communities—plus a specially arranged visit to the Punta Culebra Nature Center at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), an open-air museum dedicated to tropical science and conservation. Back on the ship, expect inspiring talks and informative events led by two Smithsonian Journeys Experts, including climate leader Steve Paton, who has spent his career monitoring the climate and oceans of the tropics. After setting off from Colón, Panama’s colorful port city, Le Bellot will journey to the San Blas archipelago, made up of more than 300 islands and home to approximately 40,000 members of the Kuna community, one of the most powerful Indigenous groups in the Western Hemisphere. From there, you’ll cross the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean via the Panama Canal, the world’s most important waterway, before exploring the capital’s atmospheric Old Quarter, the Frank Gehry-designed Biomuseo, and the Punta Culebra Nature Center at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI). There, staff will share the latest research related to marine science and guests will observe rare species up close. Next, you’ll sail to the Darién National Park, set in the wildest and most remote part of Panama. The UNESCO World Heritage site is a natural playground of sandy beaches, rocky coasts, mangroves, and tropical forests, as well as the home of the Emberá Amerindian community. Guests will visit their tropical village, admiring beautiful local crafts and enjoying traditional songs and dances. The last stretch of the trip takes place in Costa Rica, starting in the spectacular Manuel Antonio National Park, a tropical reserve known for its variety of wildlife like sloths, howler monkeys, and toucans. Then Le Bellot will make her way to Puerto Caldera, the point of disembarkation, a gateway to the magnificent Arenal Volcano. Rates start at $6,030 per person. By ML Staff.
