- My Art Uses Plastic Recovered from Beaches Around the World to Understand How Our Consumer Society
I am obsessed with plastic objects. I harvest them from the ocean for the stories they hold and to mitigate their ability to harm. Each object has the potential to be a message from the sea – a poem, a cipher, a metaphor, a warning. Pam Longobardi amid a giant heap of fishing gear that she and volunteers from the Hawaii Wildlife Fund collected in 2008. David Rothstein, CC BY-ND My work collecting and photographing ocean plastic and turning it into art began with an epiphany in 2005, on a far-flung beach at the southern tip of the Big Island of Hawaii. At the edge of a black lava beach pounded by surf, I encountered multitudes upon multitudes of plastic objects that the angry ocean was vomiting onto the rocky shore. I could see that somehow, impossibly, humans had permeated the ocean with plastic waste. Its alien presence was so enormous that it had reached this most isolated point of land in the immense Pacific Ocean. I felt I was witness to an unspeakable crime against nature, and needed to document it and bring back evidence. ‘Bounty Pilfered’ (center), ‘Newer Laocoön’ (left) and ‘Threnody’ (right). All made of ocean plastic from the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf of Mexico, installed at the Baker Museum in Naples, Fla., 2022.Pam Longobardi, CC BY-ND I began cleaning the beach, hauling away weathered and misshapen plastic debris – known and unknown objects, hidden parts of a world of things I had never seen before, and enormous whalelike colored entanglements of nets and ropes. I returned to that site again and again, gathering material evidence to study its volume and how it had been deposited, trying to understand the immensity it represented. In 2006, I formed the Drifters Project, a collaborative global entity to highlight these vagrant, translocational plastics and recruit others to investigate and mitigate ocean plastics’ impact. ‘Drifters Objects,’ a tiny sample of the plastic artifacts Pam Longobardi has collected from beaches worldwide.Pam Longobardi, CC BY-ND My new book, “Ocean Gleaning,” tracks 17 years of my art and research around the world through the Drifters Project. It reveals specimens of striking artifacts harvested from the sea – objects that once were utilitarian, but have been changed by their oceanic voyages and come back as messages from the ocean. Living in a plastic age On the 2013 Gyre Expedition, Pam Longobardi traveled with a team of scientists, artists and policymakers to investigate and remove tons of oceanic plastic washing out of great gyres, or currents, in the Pacific Ocean, and make art from it. I grew up in what some now deem the age of plastic. Though it’s not the only modern material invention, plastic has had the most unforeseen consequences. My father was a biochemist at the chemical company Union Carbide when I was a child in New Jersey. He played golf with an actor who portrayed “The Man from Glad,” a Get Smart-styled agent who rescued flustered housewives in TV commercials from inferior brands of plastic wrap that snarled and tangled. My father brought home souvenir pins of Union Carbide’s hexagonal logo, based on the carbon molecule, and figurine pencil holders of “TERGIE,” the company’s blobby turquoise mascot. Plastic ‘nurdles,’ (left), tiny pellets that serve as raw materials for manufacturing plastic products, and herring roe, or eggs (right). These visually analogous forms exemplify how fish can mistake plastic for food.Pam Longobardi, CC BY-ND Today I see plastic as a zombie material that haunts the ocean. It is made from petroleum, the decayed and transformed life forms of the past. Drifting at sea, it “lives” again as it gathers a biological slime of algae and protozoans, which become attachment sites for larger organisms. When seabirds, fish and sea turtles mistake this living encrustation for food and eat it, plastic and all, the chemical load lives on in their digestive tracts. Their body tissues absorb chemicals from the plastic, which remain undigested in their stomachs, often ultimately killing them. The forensics of plastic A degraded plastic doll arm, from the series ‘Evidence of Crimes.’Pam Longobardi, CC BY-ND I see plastic objects as the cultural archaeology of our time – relics of global late-capitalist consumer society that mirror our desires, wishes, hubris and ingenuity. They become transformed as they leave the quotidian world and collide with nature. By regurgitating them ashore or jamming them into sea caves, the ocean is communicating with us through materials of our own making. Some seem eerily familiar; others are totally alien. Division Line,’ 2016. This photograph shows the ‘life-jacket cemetary’ in Lesvos, Greece. Traumatized asylum-seekers and migrants arriving by boat from Türkiye leave the life vests on shore as they stagger inland. Most of the waste is plastic.© Pam Longobardi, CC BY-ND A person engaging in ocean gleaning acts as a detective and a beacon, hunting for the forensics of this crime against the natural world and shining the light of interrogation on it. By searching for ocean plastic in a state of open receptiveness, a gleaner like me can find symbols of pop culture, religion, war, humor, irony and sorrow. From the series ‘Prophetic Objects,’ a plastic cap from a Greek manufacturer of cleaning products, found on the Greek island of Kefalonia.Pam Longobardi, CC BY-ND In keeping with the drifting journeys of these material artifacts, I prefer using them in a transitive form as installations. All of these works can be dismantled and reconfigured, although plastic materials are nearly impossible to recycle. I display some objects as specimens on steel pins, and wire others together to form large-scale sculptures. I am interested in ocean plastic in particular because of what it reveals about us as humans in a global culture, and about the ocean as a cultural space and a giant dynamic engine of life and change. Because ocean plastic visibly shows nature’s attempts to reabsorb and regurgitate it, it has profound stories to tell. ‘Albatross’ and ‘Hope Floats,’ 2017. Recovered ocean plastic, survival rescue blankets, life vest straps and steel.Pam Longobardi, CC BY-ND I believe humankind is at a crossroads with regards to the future. The ocean is asking us to pay attention. Paying attention is an act of giving, and in the case of plastic pollution, it is also an act of taking: Taking plastic out of your daily life. Taking plastic out of the environment. And taking, and spreading, the message that the ocean is laying out before our eyes. - Art Exhibit Featuring Black Artists Opens this Weekend at Arlo Wynwood
Arlo Hotels, an independent, experience-driven lifestyle hotel brand with properties in New York and Miami, has announced an art collaboration with ArtRepublic, a global curation agency specializing in contemporary digital and immersive public art. The partnership will highlight both brands’ missions of bringing museum-quality works to an accessible space where people of all ages and cultures can engage with powerful artistic experiences beyond simply viewing paintings on a wall. The first of several planned quarterly exhibitions, “Style and Grace,” will be on view at Arlo Hotels’ newest property, Arlo Wynwood, from February 18 through May 13, 2023. The group show will bring together seven dynamic BIPOC artists on the leading edge of contemporary culture who explore the resilience, strength and persistence endured in the pursuit of self-actualization and celebrating cultural milestones such as Black History Month, Women’s History Month and Earth Day. Curated by ArtRepublic founder Jessica Santiago and Octavia Yearwood, “Style and Grace” tells a story that represents the world from a global perspective. It reminds us of our ability to make something out of nothing and how from our pain and trials we create beauty; we create community, art, literature, jazz, gospel, hip hop, style and grace. “We are at a precipice where diversity of beauty and rich culture are being affirmed, and we are seeing humanity as it truly is,” said Santiago, who has made it her life’s work to empower artists and provide a path to mass adoption of the digital art space. “The works in this exhibition portray the stories of those who allow themselves to sit inside freedom, inside the spirit of love. They serve at a level that makes those who encounter them have to reach for their authentic power.” The works will be shown as digital projections on all four walls of Arlo Wynwood’s third-floor gallery space. The projections will be accompanied by artist voice-overs, music, dialog or soundscapes to bring viewers into their process or scenes to add depth to the immersive experience. QR codes within the space will indicate physical works and NFTs available for purchase. Participating artists include: Octavia Yearwood, an author, motivational speaker and arts educator who creates and hosts programs for arts institutions, organizations and companies nationally. In 2016, she was named an “Emerging Arts Leader” by Americans for the Arts and one of the “Top 40 Black Leaders” by Legacy Magazine. She continues to focus on diversifying creative spaces and sits on the board of the Baller Alert Foundation and the advisory board of Power U. Amani Lewis, a Baltimore-based artist whose mixed-media paintings foreground the subject’s vitality and spirit. Their process-oriented approach joins photography, digital collage, screen-printing and other surface textures in turning large-scale portraits into concentrated sites of vibrancy, heat, healing and safety. “With each piece, I counter the invisibilizing of Black people and make visible their utter humanity: that which is rarely recognized,” Lewis says. Morel Doucet, a Haitian-born, Miami-based multidisciplinary artist and arts educator whose work utilizes illustrations, ceramics and prints to discuss the impact of climate gentrification, migration and displacement affecting Black diasporic communities. Through a contemporary reconfiguration of the Black experience, his work catalogs a powerful record of environmental decay at the intersection of economic inequity, the commodification of industry, personal labor and race. Jade Lilly, an artist who considers herself a “rainbow in human form” that aims to spread light in what can be a dark world and bring beauty through colors. As a Black woman, she creates a safe atmosphere for people to feel comfortable and vulnerable through her art. She is passionate about capturing and creating images that evoke emotions that can result in conversations. Indigo Suave (Michael Osei-Wusu), an award-winning film director known for his short film Syzygy. He founded A Suave Production in 2018 as a sophomore at Princeton University, where he recognized the power of visual storytelling and formed a collective of artists that focuses on creating and inspiring others through wholesome projects. Alexis Chivirter, a visual artist from Benue State, Nigeria, specializing in digital collages. She finds inspiration by observing and is always looking for patterns in things, people and emotions or wandering off to strange places on her own. Paperwater, a Miami-based avant-garde pop duo composed of Daygee Kwia and Eddy Samy that operates out of their multimedia compound Half/Full Creative. The pair gradually developed a unique sound of electronic and hip-hop with hints of indie and are currently finalizing their debut album and second EP. Both projects will be released under their label Wet Paper Records. “Embracing each other’s differences, and celebrating what makes us unique through art - in all its forms - is at the core of what the Arlo Hotels brand stands for,” said Jimmy Suh, chief commercial officer at Arlo Hotels. “Through this purpose-driven collaboration with ArtRepublic, we aim to create positive dialogue about the most important topics of our time through the universal language of art.” “Style and Grace” will be unveiled at Arlo Wynwood during a special opening event on Saturday, February 18, from 5-8 p.m., featuring an artist discussion lead by Octavia Yearwood as part of her Libations performance art series and a cocktail reception featuring music by Paperwater. A second opening event will take place on Saturday, March 18, highlighting Women’s Heritage Month and debuting the short film Power in Partnership, featuring clips from women around the world sharing insights and hopes for the future. It will also include a panel discussion featuring notable women entrepreneurs and a cocktail reception with music from Emma del Rey. Finally, a third opening highlighting sustainability and Earth Day will take place on Saturday, April 22, featuring an artist talk with Morel Doucet, a panel discussion with climate activists and auction to support The Reef Line. - The Blue Flying Wonders: Miami's Exotic Native Butterflies
"The sun is up, the sky is blue, it's beautiful, and so are you," memorably sang by John Lennon. It's as if he wrote these lyrics thinking of Miami's iconic blue sky. Miami Living's favorite flying wonders happen to be beautiful and blue too, and magically enhance Miami's sunny horizons, when you are fortunate enough to be in their presence. 1 - Red-spotted Purple Red-spotted purple, Limenitis arthemis astyanax, is a North American brush-footed butterfly with a wingspan of up to 3.5 inches that can be spotted in Miami and across much of the eastern U.S. . The wings are black and iridescent blue with small orange spots. On the underside of the wings, they tend to have more brown-black, and blue with more striking orange spots. 2 - Pipevine Swallowtail The pipevine swallowtail butterfly is found right here in Florida including much of the southern half of the U.S. and into Central America. This butterfly is black with iridescent-blue hind-wings. They are found in many different habitats, but are most commonly found in tropical zones. The male has fore-wing velvety black; hind-wing with single tail, iridescent blue-green scaling and single submarginal row of pale spots. More on the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF): The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) is the world’s leading philanthropic organization dedicated to funding life-saving cancer research. Founded in 1993 by Mike Milken, PCF has funded nearly $800 million of cutting-edge research by 2,200 scientists at 220 leading cancer centers in 22 countries around the world. Because of PCF’s commitment to ending death and suffering from prostate cancer, the death rate is down more than 52% and 1.5 million men are alive today as a result. PCF research now impacts 67 forms of human cancer by focusing on immunotherapy, the microbiome, and food as medicine. For more information, visit www.pcf.org. By ML Staff. - The Underdeck Miami Completes a Triumphant Year of Building Community Consensus
In a unique and unprecedented example of municipal collaboration between the Miami City Commission and the Miami community, a significant milestone has been achieved in consensus planning for the Underdeck, the 33-acre public multi-purpose open green space designed to complement the new I-395 Signature Bridge. In 2021, through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the Underdeck Committee entered into a formal partnership with the City of Miami, committing to provide community-driven recommendations about the process of the Underdeck should be designed, named, branded, programmed, operated, governed and maintained. The MOU also facilitated a collaborative commitment to secure state funding from the Florida Department of Transportation and federal funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s “Connecting Communities” federal grant to advance the project. Empowered by the City of Miami and the established MOU, the people of Miami have remained the focal point of the planning and development of the once-in-a-lifetime public project. Members of the community, particularly from the Overtown and Downtown resident and business communities, have played pivotal roles on the Underdeck Committee, its Working Groups and as participants in meetings and forums, advocating for the community’s currency to benefit in all areas from the project. In 2022, 124 members of the community served on five Underdeck working groups focused on Stakeholder Awareness and Engagement, Operations and Maintenance, Traffic and Mobility, Funding, and Governance. A total of 129 working group meetings were held during the year. More than 35 community in person and virtual meetings were held in Overtown and Downtown to serve local residents. Survey respondents providing feedback for the Underdeck Naming totaled more than 2,000. Two special interest groups were created for Economic Development and Youth Engagement, further expanding the Underdeck Committee’s outreach. The culmination of this collaborative work is a 400-page comprehensive report of community-based recommendations submitted to Miami City Manager, Arthur Noriega, which can be found here, with a summarized Year in Review document available here. “With the Underdeck positioned to be a legacy greenspace designed to “bring Miami together”, the commitment by the Miami City Commission to activate community participation in the planning stages should not only be acknowledged but celebrated. Considering that the Underdeck will run adjacent to the Overtown neighborhood that suffered profound displacement and disconnection during I-95 highway construction in the 1960’s, having residents, business owners and community leaders from Overtown to Downtown actively involved with the comprehensive planning of the Underdeck truly makes this a project of the people, for the people and by the people”, commented Dr. Nelson Adams, Chair, Stakeholder Awareness, Education & Engagement Working Group. With the community-based Underdeck Committee report submitted to the Miami City Commission, the next step will be to compile the submitted recommendations for a Commission vote in the upcoming months. Given the nationwide focus on and funding opportunities for projects that prioritize reconnecting communities, with a yes vote, the City of Miami can establish the Underdeck project as a testament to the impact of community collaboration and the value of community engagement in the development of community-focused public spaces. To further engage the community, www.underdeckmiami.com was launched in early 2022 as a virtual hub to keep the community abreast of all things Underdeck. A growing database of meeting attendees and other involved stakeholders are included in the distribution of the Underdeck Chronicle monthly newsletter. Through the website, residents and other stakeholders can volunteer to join any Underdeck working group advocating for the project. By ML Staff. Images Courtesy of The Underdeck Miami
- High Line Network Announces 10 New Members, Bringing its Total to 47 Infrastructure Reuse Projects
The High Line Network today announces that it has welcomed ten new members into its community of nonprofit infrastructure reuse projects. Since its inception by the High Line in 2016, the Network has grown from an initial group of 19 projects now to 47, highlighting the growing sector of transforming underutilized and abandoned infrastructure into new urban landscapes that value public spaces. The Underdeck, a transformative mile-long linear public space due for completion in 2026, will build community, bridge neighborhoods and cultural assets in downtown Miami, and reconnect Overtown to the heart of downtown Miami. Redefining what parks can be, these hybrid spaces are also public squares, open-air museums, botanical gardens, social service organizations, walkways, transit corridors, and more. Members of the Network also commit to creating a world where people have access to vibrant public spaces that center local communities, build civic connections, support environmental resilience, and foster equitable community development. The ten new members of the High Line Network are: Emerald Trail | Jacksonville, FL The Emerald Trail will connect 14 urban neighborhoods to each other, downtown, and the St. Johns River and includes the ecological restoration of two urban creeks, Hogans Creek and McCoys Creek. CityArchRiver | St. Louis, MO Gateway Arch Park Foundation is reimagining, connecting, enhancing, and transforming St Louis’s famous Arch and surrounding park for future generations, which includes Park Over the Highway and the renovation of the St. Louis Waterfront, and more. Englewood Agro-Eco District | Chicago, IL This future 2-mile linear park is transforming a vacated rail corridor into a naturalized space for residents to enjoy and use to connect deeper with nature. The Trail will also serve as a connector between Englewood's growing network of urban farms and gardens to strengthen local food access, health and wellness, and employment within the neighborhood. Piers Park III | Boston, MA Drawing on more than a century of expertise in public open space management, The Trustees is transforming an abandoned pier adjacent to Piers Park and Piers Park II into an iconic new park, free and open to all, working closely with the community. Jacksonville Riverfront | Jacksonville, FL An emerging linear network of planned destination parks, trails, and green spaces along both banks of the St. Johns River, Jacksonville Riverfront is connecting new and existing residential, commercial, and institutional uses to active and vibrant greenspaces, parks, and bike and pedestrian pathways. Rock Island Bridge | Kansas City, KS Flying Truss is reclaiming the historic Rock Island Railroad Bridge as America’s first trailhead and entertainment district over a river. Southern Gateway Park | Dallas, TX This park will become the heartbeat of Southern Dallas, reconnecting historic Oak Cliff and igniting environmental, economic, and community revitalization. The Underdeck | Miami, FLA transformative mile-long linear public space due for completion in 2026, will build community, bridge neighborhoods and cultural assets in downtown Miami, and reconnect Overtown to the heart of downtown Miami. The RiverFront | Omaha, NE Founded in 2018, The RiverFront combines three parks in the heart of downtown Omaha into one identity. After undergoing renovations, the three parks now connect, serving as a gathering space between the historic Old Market and vibrant north downtown Omaha. Willamette Falls | Portland, OR The nation’s second largest waterfall is a place where multiple histories and cultures converge. The Willamette Falls Trust, an Oregon-based philanthropic-focused nonprofit and inter-tribal organization, is redefining how Indigenous communities can work with governments to preserve, restore, and advocate for sacred sites with shared histories. “I'm excited to welcome these ten new members to the High Line Network because they represent some of the most exciting projects being developed right now in North America,” said Alan van Capelle, Executive Director of the High Line. “These new members are smart, creative and strategic and I look forward to working alongside each of them." These projects expand opportunities for knowledge and resource sharing among Network members, bringing in new voices and representation to the fold. They also amplify the Network’s reach among different cities and communities across North America. From an inter-tribal-led organization reusing an industrial site and waterfall, to an eco-district weaving communities through urban agriculture practices, creating new ways to promote peer-to-peer learning is a key aspect of the High Line Network’s impact. “I’m thrilled that we’re able to bring this exceptional group of public space leaders into the High Line Network—they bring important new experiences to our peer learning community on what it means to embed equity in public spaces,” states Asima Jansveld, Managing Director of the High Line Network. “The Network will continue to support and challenge our members to drive actively towards dismantling the impacts of infrastructural racism in their communities.” New members were selected through the Network’s second open call this winter, in response to a growing recognition of the infrastructure reuse field as a powerful tool for increasing public green spaces across urban cities. Infrastructure reuse projects can bring tremendous and much-needed social, health, environmental, and economic benefits, and new members were chosen based on their commitment to building the Network’s leadership to address these goals across North America. The High Line Network provides both practical implementation support and inspiration for members to build these positive impacts for as many people as possible, especially longtime residents of their neighboring communities. As a program of the High Line, the Network remains grounded within its own infrastructure reuse project in New York City, committed to become a better civic connector for its own neighborhood. SUPPORT The High Line Network is made possible by the founding support of The JPB Foundation. Other major support provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. ABOUT THE HIGH LINE NETWORK Presented by the High Line, the High Line Network is a group of infrastructure reuse projects—and the people who help them come to life. As cities become denser and land for traditional parks becomes more scarce, residents are finding creative ways to bring greenspace to their neighborhoods. Projects in the High Line Network transform underutilized infrastructure into new urban landscapes. Redefining what a park can be, these hybrid spaces are also public squares, open-air museums, botanical gardens, social service organizations, walkways, transit corridors, and more. MORE ON THE HIGH LINE The High Line is both a nonprofit organization and a public park on the West Side of Manhattan. Through our work with communities on and off the High Line, we’re devoted to reimagining public spaces to create connected, healthy neighborhoods and cities. Built on a historic, elevated rail line, the High Line was always intended to be more than a park. You can walk through the gardens, view art, experience a performance, enjoy food or beverage, or connect with friends and neighbors---- all while enjoying a unique perspective of New York City. Nearly 100% of our annual budget comes through donations. The High Line is owned by the City of New York and we operate under a license agreement with NYC Parks. By ML Staff.
