  • Vivian Howard’s Cilantro Lime Sweet Corn

Spicy and buttery, this is the perfect make-ahead corn dish for a summer barbecue. For Mother’s Day, the kids gave me a cookbook that’s been on my wishlist for months: Vivian Howard’s much-acclaimed Deep Run Roots: Stories and Recipes from My Corner of the South (Little, Brown and Company, 2016). I don’t know how to articulate my love for this book other than to say that it’s so beautifully written and photographed, even if I never cooked a single recipe from it, I’d still treasure it. Vivian Howard is the owner and chef of Chef and the Farmer in Kinston, North Carolina and also the creator and star of the PBS documentary and cooking series A Chef’s Life. Her book is so much more than just a collection of recipes — it’s a personal story of Southern cooking filled with warm family anecdotes, tales from the restaurant business, and insight into the food and culture of Eastern North Carolina. Yes, there are a lot of “cheffy” recipes in the book – like Braised Pork Shoulder and Sweet Potato Free-Form Lasagna or Fried Green Tomatoes with Curried Peach Preserves and Whipped Feta — but for every one of those, there’s an equally homey and simple one, like Grandma Hill’s Candied Yams or this cilantro lime sweet corn that my family loves. WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE CILANTRO LIME SWEET CORN HOW TO MAKE CILANTRO LIME SWEET CORN A quick note before we get to the step-by-step: this version of the recipe is slightly different than the one in the cookbook. I made a few minor adjustments to simplify it and suit my cooking style, but the essence and taste of the dish are the same. To begin, remove the kernels from the cobs. The best way to do this is to this (without having corn kernels fly all over the kitchen) is to invert a small bowl inside a larger bowl. Hold the cob upright on top of the inverted small bowl, with the flatter end down, and use a sharp knife to slice downward as close to the cob as possible. Next, combine the corn, 1-1/2 cups water, salt and sugar in a 10-inch skillet or medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes — until the corn is tender-crisp and there are about 2 tablespoons of water left in the pan. Stir in the butter, lime zest, lime juice, cilantro, and cayenne pepper. Serve warm and enjoy! Cilantro Lime Sweet Corn Modestly adapted from Deep Run Roots: Stories and Recipes from My Corner of the South by Vivian Howard (Little, Brown and Company, 2016) Spicy and buttery, this is the perfect make-ahead corn dish for a summer barbecue. Servings: 4 Prep Time: 15 Minutes Cook Time: 20 Minutes Total Time: 35 Minutes INGREDIENTS 4 cups corn (cut from about 5 ears) 1½ teaspoons salt ½ teaspoon sugar 4 tablespoons unsalted butter Zest of 2 limes 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice ½ cup cilantro, finely chopped ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper INSTRUCTIONS Combine the corn, 1½ cups water, salt and sugar in a 10-inch skillet or medium saucepan. Bring the liquid to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium and cook, uncovered, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes -- until the corn is tender-crisp and there are about 2 tablespoons of water left in the pan (it's fine to eyeball it; it doesn't need to be exact). Stir in the butter, lime zest, lime juice, cilantro, and cayenne pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning, then serve warm. Make Ahead: This dish can be made up to a day ahead of time but wait to add the cilantro until right before serving. • LEXUS International Gay Polo Tournament Presented by Douglas Elliman is Set for April 6-9th

The National Polo Center, Wellington’s destination for polo and equestrian sports, will transform into a colorful five-day fete with celebrants coming from around the world to support the LEXUS International Gay Polo Tournament - Presented by Douglas Elliman Real Estate (GPL) from April 6-9, 2023. Creating a culture of community, togetherness, and high fashion, the event inspires and empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals in sports and beyond. “As our world continues to evolve, we remain a constant at the forefront, working to create inclusiveness and equality in not only polo and equestrian sports, but in the community as a whole,” shared Chip McKenney, founder of the Gay Polo League. “We are honored to have so many friends and allies join us each year.” The robust itinerary for the 2023 event kicks off with the GPL Polo Players Welcome Reception (by invitation) on Thursday, April 6. Players gather for camaraderie, joie-de-vivre and much fun before the weekend’s festivities fully begin. Everyone’s favorite pre-event, the GPL Polotini Wigstock cocktail reception will take place on Friday, April 7 at The National Polo Center and will feature a hair-raising extravaganza, cocktails, light bites and a legendary performance by internationally known drag icon, comedian, recording artist and jet-set DJ, Lady Bunny. Wigs are highly encouraged for this event! Saturday, April 8 is the main event tournament and tailgate competition. Sixteen polo players from around the world will compete on the Isla Carroll West Field for the prize (and bragging rights) during both The Senator’s Cup and The Founders Cup beginning at 1:00 p.m. Not to be missed is GPL’s world-famous tailgate competition. Tailgaters are already dreaming up their whimsical tablescapes and decor in preparation for the fun-spirited competitiveness that lines the polo field, with each tailgate becoming its own experience that collectively contributes to the overall flare and exhilaration of the day. Coveted awards for Best in Show, Best Cuisine, Best Cocktail, Best Single Tailgate, and Best Multiple Tailgate are up for grabs. All in attendance are anxiously waiting to see what themes tailgaters will bring to this years' competition. Favorites over the years have included themes from Steel Magnolias, Gray Gardens, Brunch at Tiffany's, Gay Polo League (GPL) yacht club, Gert's 1950's Beauty Salon, Wizard of Oz, and more. While each tailgater and team might be in competition, it is the desire for equality on and off the field that resonates with all in attendance. The impact that The Gay Polo League has made can be seen in the receiving of the Champion of Equity & Diversity in Sports award from the Palm Beach County Sports Commission in 2022. The first award from a non-gay organization, the recognition symbolizes that GPL has become an instrument of change and oftentimes introduces gay people into the lives and consciousness of people who may not have known gay people firsthand.” Back again this year after a wildly successful launch is Haute House-- an exclusive tent filled with social influencers that add to the stardom of the event’s attendees. The energy from the jovial groups and vibrant scenes will once again uplift the athletes on the field feverishly pursuing title championship. Acting on its vision of providing equality, pride, inclusion, and confidence for those who face discrimination simply due to having non-traditional sexual or gender identities, the tournament will once again benefit the OnePULSE Foundation. In 2022, this GPL event raised $135,000 for the nonprofit organization, born after the tragic events that unfolded at Pulse Nightclub, where 49 people lost their lives in 2016. Aiming for even more money raised in 2023, the GPL is working tirelessly to support efforts by onePULSE to fund scholarships while creating a sanctuary for and to honor the victims who lost their lives “While triumphs in financial impact, anticipation, and attendance each year are always highlights, it is the thousands of athletes, supporters, and attendees celebrating diversity together as one that is truly what makes this event so special,” ended McKenney. This year’s event sponsors include Cherry Knoll Farm, Village of Wellington, Woodford Reserve, Churchill Downs, 3 Graces Dressage, and NOMAD. GPL members, players, and attendees will receive a GPL Preferred Rate of $199.00 per night, including Continental Breakfast, when they stay at the Hampton Inn Wellington. • AVRA to Open Second Miami Location at Newgard Development Group’s LOFTY Brickell

Greek restaurant brand AVRA Estiatorio has announced it will open a second South Florida location at Newgard Development Group’s LOFTY Brickell. AVRA’s flagship New York location opened on East 48th Street in 2000; today the brand has two more Manhattan locales, another in Beverly Hills, and most recently opened a fifth location at The Estates at Acqualina™ in Sunny Isles Beach. A collaboration between restaurateurs Nick Tsoulos, Nick Pashalis and Marc Packer, AVRA isn’t just a place to dine — it’s a destination that transports diners to the whitewashed islands of Greece with its decor and cuisine including incomparably fresh seafood, vegetables and hand-pressed extra-virgin olive oil. AVRA’s cuisine is inspired by the seaside tavernas dotted all over Greece’s coast and more than 200 islands. The menu offers iterations of fresh fish with familiar favorites such as branzino, red snapper and wild Dover sole, as well as rarer Mediterranean gems like fagri and lithrini. Picking your seafood from the ice display that features in-season catch is a signature part of the AVRA experience. The wine program at AVRA is as impressive as the food with a list that includes more than 1,200 varieties and spans the globe. When it comes to spirits, AVRA’s options number in the hundreds and include 25 varieties. Greek spirits are part of the mix with ouzos and mastichas, and the cocktails are creative and a nod to Greece. “AVRA Estiatorio is a huge addition to LOFTY Brickell,” said Harvey Hernandez, Newgard Development Group CEO. “Its creative menu, superior service and unique dining experience align perfectly with the vibe and 5-star experience that we will be offering to our LOFTY buyers and guests.” With interiors designed by Rockwell Group, AVRA Brickell will occupy more than 10,000 square feet and have a 300-seat main dining room along with elegant outdoor seating overlooking the Miami River. Other design elements will include a spacious bar area, an expansive seafood display on ice similar to those found at traditional Greek markets, and a sleek aesthetic inspired by the Greek village of Nafpaktos, where AVRA’s co-founder Nick Tsoulos was born and brought up. Located directly across from Brickell City Centre on a waterfront site on the Miami River, the 44-story LOFTY is the next evolution of condo ownership, conceived to bring a 5-star alternative for the owner and traveler of today that might prefer to own and stay differently – yet does not want to compromise on the services and amenities of a great hotel. Newgard recently broke ground on the project, which is nearly 90% sold and currently offering two, three and three-bedroom-plus-den penthouse residences priced between $1.95 million and $3.5 million. Michael Comras of The Comras Company negotiated the lease on behalf of both parties. AVRA Brickell will be located at LOFTY Brickell at 99 SW Seventh St., Miami, FL 33131. • Kith Announces Opening of Miami Design District Store

Kith has announced the expansion of its Miami locations with the opening of Kith’s second Miami location, Kith for Sadelle’s inaugural Miami restaurant, and a standalone Kith Treats store. This new store is two stories and will carry Kith’s in-house and multi-brand ready-to-wear, accessories and footwear offerings for men, women and kids. The Kith Miami Design District concept mirrors that of Kith’s signature retail designs, transposed against details that embody modern elements the Miami neighborhood is known for. With this retail expansion Kith continues to offer its customers a unique shopping experience reflective of the location’s environment. The brand’s quintessential neutral color palette is juxtaposed alongside vibrant shades of green, incorporated through the interior landscape design as a small nod to Miami’s natural beauty. Santa Margherita Rosa Perlino, Perlato Royal and Carrara marble floors and structures are woven alongside wavy fluted plaster, birch wood, brass and painted gypsum throughout both floors. The result is a sophisticated atmosphere that is light and expansive, as designed by Kith’s Founder and Creative Director Ronnie Fieg. “Evolving and expanding our spaces with tact is as challenging as it is motivating. Each store must feel completely unique while retaining the red thread that runs through all of our flagships. Our new Miami Design District location feels like a true notch in our timeline. It marks our first standalone Kith Treats bar, as well as our first US Sadelle’s at Kith restaurant. After opening our first one in Paris with Jeff and Major Food Group a few years ago, I’m excited to bring our partnership to Miami.” - Ronnie Fieg, Founder and Creative Director, Kith. Upon entering, a circular structure centers the space separating the menswear from the womenswear. A deep hallway of changing rooms with birch paneled walls and ceilings is located at the rear of the showroom. Floor to ceiling windows flood the staircase with natural light, providing strong visual contrast against the white floating steps that connect the main level to the second floor. Once upstairs, customers are met with ribbed fabric walls across the expansive circular shoe room, providing a moment of warmth against the otherwise minimal design. Further into the second floor is Sadelle’s at Kith bringing Major Food Group’s renowned New York restaurant to the Design District. White washed ash walls with picture frame molding are met by a checkerboard floor, fluted ming green counter and fluted Carrara marble header, creating a space that is both polished and inviting. Kith for Sadelle’s Miami will offer the restaurant's signature menu items including its infamous brunch. "Major Food Group and Kith's partnership developed naturally out of mutual respect and our shared New York DNA. Our first collaboration launched in Paris, and we couldn’t be more proud to bring our beloved Sadelle's to our new home in the Miami Design District.” - Jeff Zalaznick, Major Food Group Co-Founder. In addition, Kith introduces the brand's first permanent standalone Kith Treats outpost, located directly across the street from Kith’s retail location, at 84 NE 41st Street. A circular bar of Rosa Portugalo marble centralizes the 1,000 square foot space against Carrara marble barstools and stainless-steel accents, highlighted by Kith Treats’ discernible parlor-style cereal canister wall. The location will serve new exclusive Signature Specials created by friends and family of Kith, and for guests seated at the counter, an extended menu of original Belgian waffle offerings with custom Kith branding. The space will also stock the brand’s global inline apparel capsules. To celebrate the opening, Ronnie Fieg and ASICS reprise their long-standing partnership by introducing the GEL-LYTE III Remastered – Super Yellow. A return of the exact dimensions featured on the inaugural pair that Fieg introduced in 2007 when he began his partnership with the brand. The silhouette features original key GEL-LYTE III elements including a nubuck upper, split tongue and the classic form stripes that the brand is known for in a suede orange execution. The duo also brought back the original ASICS box and hang tags. The Ronnie Fieg for ASICS GEL-LYTE III Remastered – Super Yellow will commemorate the opening of the Kith Miami Design District flagship. It will launch later at Kith’s international locations as well as Kith.com & EU.Kith.com. We offer an array of premium products, ranging from our own in-house label to a curated selection of multi-brand apparel and footwear. In 2015, Kith Treats was conceived from a childhood love for cereal and dreams of one day opening up a cereal bar - now operating in eight locations, Treats has become a staple within Kith. Our brand has also extended to three shop-in-shops at Bergdorf Goodman, Hirshleifers, and at Selfridges. Embarking on our journey overseas we knew it was only right to bring a taste of New York with us; together with Major Food Group, we introduced our first restaurant - Sadelle’s at Kith Paris. Kith was founded by Ronnie Fieg, a prominent figure in the footwear industry, who has over twenty years of hands-on experience. Born and raised in Queens, Fieg has been involved in the footwear industry since becoming a stock boy at New York-based franchise David Z. at age 12. With steadfast perseverance, he methodically rose through the ranks from floor salesman to assistant manager to eventually becoming head buyer. Collaborating with brands that have stood the test of time, Kith aligns itself with brands and ideations from Fieg’s childhood that cohesively formalized the roots of his upbringing. Conceptualizing Kith as an extension of himself, Fieg seeks to shift the current landscape of fashion, while operating under a personal philosophy of giving the consumer more than what they pay for.
