- Homemade Caesar Salad Dressing
My family loves this rich and creamy Caesar salad dressing. It’s not overly garlicky or fishy — it’s just right. Though most people buy Caesar salad dressing in a bottle, homemade is incredibly easy to make and tastes so much better than store-bought. There are many variations, but this rich and creamy version is the one my whole family loves. It’s not too garlicky and not too fishy – it’s just right. Unlike authentic Caesar dressings which are made with olive oil and thickened with raw eggs, this one has a mayonnaise base, which means you don’t have to worry if you’re squeamish about raw eggs. My kids love this dressing so much that they’ve learned to make it themselves. They don’t even wait for me to make a salad; while I cook dinner, they sit at the kitchen table with a big heart of romaine and dip the leaves in. This recipe is part of my classic salad dressing collection, which includes go-to recipes for oil and vinegar based dressings, like vinaigrette and balsamic vinaigrette, as well as creamy dressings, such as buttermilk ranch dressing and blue cheese dressing, which are typically made with mayonnaise and dairy products. WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE CAESAR SALAD DRESSING Instead of whole anchovies, I use anchovy paste — makes it easy, especially if you’re squeamish about anchovies (just hold your nose and add it in; the dressing needs every last bit to taste like the real deal!) For the cheese, it’s important to use imported Parmigiano-Reggiano from Italy; domestic Parmesan pales in comparison. You can always tell if it’s authentic by looking at the rind, which is embossed with the name over and over. If the cheese is already grated, it should be labeled “Parmigiano-Reggiano,” not “Parmesan.” STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS Begin by whisking together the garlic, anchovy paste, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Next, whisk in the mayonnaise, Parmigiano-Reggiano, salt, and pepper. The dressing will keep well in the fridge for about a week. For a main course Caesar, try pairing this with my best grilled chicken. Enjoy! Homemade Caesar Salad Dressing By Jennifer Segal, adapted from Gourmet magazine My family loves this rich and creamy Caesar salad dressing. It’s not overly garlicky or fishy — it’s just right. - FAD Connection by Federica Levrero – Global Education Platform for Fashion, Art & Design
Federica Levrero is an entrepreneur that believes in the importance of creativity, cultural exchange, and education. After a long journey to match her professional life with her personal values, she launched FAD Connection in order to support others in their vocational goals. Miami Living chatted with Federica Levrero to learn more about FAD Connection. Tell us about yourself and your journey to creating FAD Connection. Born and raised in Uruguay, I was exposed to diverse cultures and languages from a young age, as my family owns a travel agency. We traveled extensively and had the opportunity to experience various cultures. By the age of 17, my professional expectations and ambitions were high, but when it came to choosing what I wanted to study, I had no idea. At the time, school counselors did not exist, so my bachelor options were limited. With pressure from my family to work in the family business, I chose to pursue a bachelor's degree in business.Today, I can say with absolute confidence that I have found my vocation, but it was a long journey. After completing my business degree and studying abroad, I still did not find my passion. It wasn't until I finished my coaching diploma in 2020 that I was able to leverage my multicultural background, passion for arts education, and support others in professional exploration. Helping individuals reach their goals more easily and quickly, promoting cultural exchange and artistic education through a network of international universities focused on fashion, art, and design is very rewarding. Honestly, I wish FAD Connection tools had been available to me when I was 16 or 17 years old. What is your goal with FAD Connection? We believe in the transformative power of creativity and how simple daily routines related to the arts can improve our lives, change the way we think, and enhance our ability to communicate with others. At FAD Connection, our mission is to encourage young students to pursue bachelor's degrees in any form of art, including fashion, design, music, filmmaking, acting, and performing arts. Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross's book, "Your Brain on Art," highlights the new sciences behind humanity's evolutionary birthright to create and appreciate art and its power to transform our lives. We believe that our mission embraces the importance of art by guiding students toward fulfilling vocational paths in the arts. Who or what inspires you? Watching movies without any prior knowledge about them inspires me. Additionally, simple routines in my daily life, such as going to the market on Sundays, also provide inspiration. I don't wait for inspiration to strike; I pursue it every single week. For example, I recently started a reading group where we meet every Tuesday to read and discuss authors from various disciplines related to design. Tell us about any projects or collaborations you’ve done with students or institutions in Miami. FAD Connection represents two prestigious schools in Miami: Istituto Marangoni Miami for fashion and design programs and New York Film Academy for film, acting, and photography programs. We assist students from Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay in deciding their paths of learning. At the age of 16 or 17, it can be difficult to distinguish between fashion styling and fashion business or understand the role of a film producer. That's where FAD Connection comes in - we help students with their portfolios, personal statements, auditions, monologues, and all related application documents. We also guide them through their life in Miami. From your perspective, what are some of the new/trending careers? From a fashion standpoint, I've noticed that more students are choosing careers in fashion styling and creative direction. The complexity of effectively communicating a brand message requires prepared and visionary students and future professionals who can understand the different platforms that speak to diverse audiences in unique ways while communicating a single, clear message. The introduction of the metaverse has transformed the way fashion relates to its audiences, making these skills increasingly important. However, I believe the most crucial role today is that of the designer. Creating new products with a positive impact on the environment is a highly challenging career that demands skilled, innovative, and sustainable designers. Additionally, game art and multimedia art are new trends, and more students are choosing technological careers in these fields. Can you share how you envision AI impacting education? Recent studies predict that by 2026, more than 25% of the population will spend at least one hour per day in the Metaverse, for work, shopping, education, social interaction, and entertainment, and over 30% of the population will have Metaverse-ready products. Therefore, education needs to adapt to this new reality. In the fashion industry, there are three major areas: Fashion Design, Fashion Styling, and Fashion Business, and AI is now integrated into all of them. Education programs are in the process of adapting to this reality. For instance, the luxury sector of fashion utilizes 3D Modeling and Avatar design, and students need to learn these new tools that the market requires. Likewise, fashion stylists must know how to produce and advertise campaigns in both physical and digital spaces. This directly affects higher education. Not all schools can quickly adapt to these tools that the luxury market uses, as these software and hardware are still quite expensive to incorporate into study programs, and only a few universities can keep up with the pace. Moreover, the shopping experience has shifted to virtual spaces and NFT, and fashion business students must understand this and how to use technology for social AR and Avatar Design, which is part of the industry. Knowing how gamification and fashion interact, how to create a fashion event in the virtual world, how to design social AR, create an avatar, use 3D modeling, create an NFT strategy, or design a virtual space requires advanced skills, and only a few universities are equipped to provide such training. As a result, my job is to help students and families who want the best education in the fashion and design industry understand the differences between European and North American education. I help them understand the various pathways that Bachelor's programs offer and the professional careers that await students after they finish their degree. Most importantly, I guide them through the process of making a life-changing decision about what to study, where to study, and how to make their dreams come true. What’s coming up next for FAD Connection in the year to come? FAD Connection is Uruguayan based company with over 14 years of experience advising students (and families) on fashion, art & design undergraduate and postgraduate education. We started growing fast within Argentina, Chile, and Paraguay markets in the last years and we are expanding our advisory services to North America and Europe. We truly believe in the power of creativity and we want more high school students choosing artistic disciplines. Website: www.fadconnection.com IG: www.instagram.com/fadconnection/ By ML Staff. - ACS Laboratory Launches the Most Comprehensive National Hemp Compliance Testing Panel and COA
Raising the standard for cannabis and hemp testing, ACS Laboratory, the largest hemp and cannabis testing facility in the eastern U.S., is pleased to announce the National Hemp Testing Panel – the most comprehensive national hemp testing panel in the industry. One year after the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued its final rules on hemp, various states enacted their own regulatory programs. For example, states such as Florida, New York, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Utah created specific testing rules that hemp growers and brands must follow, some more comprehensive than the USDA’s mandates. The diverse regulations mean multi-state hemp operators need reliable support to remain compliant. Hemp supply chain companies need qualified third-party laboratories that meticulously follow nuanced laws to ensure their products are permissible across the country. End-users also deserve the safest, highest quality products–regardless of where they reside. Although ACS Laboratory foresees federal legalization for cannabis in the future, it may be years before national laboratory standards are created. The National Hemp Testing Panel is ACS Laboratory’s solution to meet all the state standards for nationally sold hemp products. Led by their Principal Scientist Laboratory Director, Dr. Aixia Sun D.H.Sc., M.Sc., B.Sc., MT (AAB), ACS Laboratory conducted intense due diligence for several months. The laboratory researched the fine print of every state's rules for hemp sampling, THC potency, cannabinoid content, residual solvents, pesticides, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and microbiology. With that research, they created elaborate matrices to compare each mandate. Using the data collected, ACS Laboratory extracted the strictest requirements per category to create the National Hemp Testing Panel and corresponding Certificate of Analysis. With the National Hemp Testing Panel, ACS Laboratory tests for 18 cannabinoids, 105 pesticides, 24 heavy metals, 55 potential residual solvents, 17 different microorganisms, and every required mycotoxin to detect parts per billion, as well as for moisture content, water activity and terpenes (upon request). After reviewing the maximum allowable limits for various contaminants in different states, ACS Laboratory realized they needed to develop new testing methods to align. Specifically, they invested in highly sensitive instrumentations that could quantify the lowest action limits. “We developed the National Hemp Testing Panel because comprehensive testing is key to the industry’s future. Compliance is critical to reducing liability risks and expanding market opportunities, and unfortunately, most laboratories do not offer comprehensive testing,” said Roger Brown, president of ACS Laboratory. “By submitting samples for national panel testing, hemp growers, manufacturers, and processors can confidently sell products anywhere in the country.” Brown continued, “The national panel means direct-to-consumer brands can ensure its customers that they’re producing clean, safe and high-quality goods, which have passed the most stringent requirements nationwide. While we believe a lesser national panel should be more ubiquitous, the ACS Laboratory National Hemp Testing Panel meets all the state standards for nationally sold hemp products.” An ISO 17025 compliant, DEA licensed, and CLIA licensed laboratory, ACS Laboratory offers the largest state-of-the-art testing facility in cannabis and hemp testing in the eastern U.S. It is on a mission to support cannabis and hemp companies in their pursuit to deliver clean, safe, and innovative products that promote positive progress in the industry. ACS Laboratory is always ahead of the development curve, continually enhancing its testing methodologies and developing new tests for harmful toxins, therapeutic terpenes, and minor cannabinoids. - Baptist Foundation Foundation Offers Blankets for Babies
Sometimes, all it takes is a vision and a little extra time to make something incredible. This was true for Anna Yarberry and her mother when they realized a need that they could meet for the babies in the NICU at Baptist Health. Years of collecting an assortment of sewing materials, Anna’s mother became unable to craft any sewing projects because of her failing eyesight. In May of 2015, Anna’s mother passed away, leaving her with an important decision to make… Should she still move forward with their vision? Anna and her niece Kristina, a NICU nurse, decided, “Yes!” They should still use the materials to make blankets for the babies in the NICU. Anna began sewing blankets and giving them to the hospital in hopes of continuing her mother’s legacy of love through the donations. Four years later, Anna’s niece Kristina set up a Go Fund Me fundraiser for her birthday to collect money for supplies to create the blankets. Expecting a couple hundred dollars, Anna and her niece received over a thousand dollars, along with material donations to continue making blankets. Anna committed to watching for sales and stretching the money as far as she could to help as many families as possible with the money given to them. Anna would finish a round of blankets and give them to Kristina to take to the hospital, which was a great system. Then, COVID-19 Pandemic hit and the hospital could not accept the blankets, due to safety restrictions. Anna and her niece did not give up and waited until they could continue, only recently at the beginning of 2023. As of March 2023, Anna has made close to a thousand blankets and delivered their latest donation of over 200 blankets to the hospital when restrictions were lifted. Anna explained her passion by saying, “It is a simple act that seems to make my niece and her coworkers happy and makes the parents of these precious babies smile. That makes it worthwhile”. Anna continues to create blankets as time allows, seeing an opportunity with her vision in mind and remembering her mother with each finished blanket. As we celebrate National Volunteer Month, let’s take a moment to appreciate the amazing work of people like Anna and Kristina. They saw a need and took action, using their skills and resources to make a real difference in the lives of families with babies in the NICU. Their story reminds us that anyone can make a difference, no matter how big or small the action may seem. It’s the compassion and generosity of people like Anna and Kristina that make our communities stronger and more caring. Let’s thank all the volunteers out there who are making a difference in the world, one act of kindness at a time. By ML Staff. Image courtesy of Baptist Health.
