  • Florida’s First Non-Anesthetic Pet Dental Spa, HealthySmiles, Launches in South Florida

    Imagine if the sights, sounds and smells of your pet’s dental office resembled those of a pampering spa. Meet HealthySmiles Pet Dental, Florida’s first non-anesthetic pet dental spa located in Plantation, Florida. No medications are used and no down time is required. HealthySmiles’ warm, contemporary design features white, modern subway tiles, warm woods and ample open spaces anchored by green plants and natural materials. An educational area in the lobby features three, semi-private viewing stalls with touch-screen computers displaying a library of relevant information at customers’ fingertips. A well-curated retail area in the lobby showcases a variety of organic pet dental products including pet specific toothpaste and toothbrushes, vegan dental chews, dental wipes, coconut oil, pet breath fresheners and other natural pet products. Once HealthySmiles determines that a pet's dental condition and behavior are suitable for the procedure, they gently swaddle the pet to ensure it feels safe. Then, a five-step process is used to safely deep clean their teeth without anesthesia. They begin the dental cleaning by removing the plaque and calculus on pet’s teeth. They further clean the bacteria under the gum line and finish by polishing, wiping, and rinsing the mouth. Pet parents even receive “before” and “after” photos to document their pet's smile makeover. Some of the signs a pet needs a dental cleaning include bad breath, swollen or bleeding gums, discolored teeth, excessive drooling, difficulty eating or drinking, difficulty swallowing and face rubbing or pawing of the mouth. There are many advantages to non-anesthetic versus anesthetic dental. An anesthesia dental, which typically costs between $400 to $1,000 dollars, requires sedatives and general anesthesia where both IV and inhalation are used. Pre-anesthetic lab work is required to ensure the pet’s internal organs can support general anesthesia, and the lengthy procedure takes between four to eight hours, including recovery time. Non-anesthetic pet dental care is less expensive, costing between $179 to $239 depending on the pet’s size, the procedure only takes 45 minutes, there is zero recovery time, no medications are used and prior lab tests are not required. Older and sick pets greatly benefit from non-anesthetic dental cleanings to avoid complications that may arise from the use of anesthesia. HealthySmiles also offers membership plans that enable pets to receive two dental cleanings per year for as low as $25-35 per month. These non-anesthetic dentals also help reduce the risk of bacterial infections such as periodontal disease, which adversely affects a pet’s overall health, causing chronic pain, gum inflammation and, in severe cases, bone loss and organ failure. To avoid these health risks, it is recommended that pets have a deep dental cleaning every six months. Anesthesia-free dental cleanings are best suited for routine dental care, while severe periodontal disease, complicated fractures, and teeth extractions require the use of sedation and anesthesia to avoid severe pain. Dogs have 42 adult teeth, 4 blunt canines, 12 incisors, 16 premolars and 10 molars. Their teeth need regular deep cleanings to help prevent the progression of plaque and avoid severe periodontitis. The primary bacteria in dogs’ mouths is Capnocytophaga canimorsus which builds up and bothers dogs when left untreated. For cats, regular dental care helps to keep their teeth shiny and their breath fresh, plus it helps prevent dental infections, which can progress from mild to severe in a matter of months. Cats’ mouths have many different kinds of bacteria, giving them a higher risk of periodontal disease than dogs. However, because cat’s 30 adult teeth are significantly smaller than dog teeth, their dental cleanings take less time. “HealthySmiles began as a partnership with other pet providers such as groomers, daycares and vets where we serviced their clients on an ongoing basis,” explains Tarek El Gammal, CEO of HealthySmiles Pet Dental. “However, we noticed significant organic demand for our service, which led us to go direct to consumer. We started doing house calls over the summer before deciding to build brick and mortar locations in an effort to continue focusing on fully controlling the pet parent and pet experience.   • McLaren Speedtail – The Luxurious Hypercar Sports Car

    Introduced 4 years ago and tested right here in Florida, we feature McLaren’s Speedtail for its timeless design and limited-production. This sumptuous luxurious hypercar has a starting price around $2 million. The hybrid sports car, manufactured by McLaren Automotive, was tested on Kennedy Space Center’s shuttle landing runways just 3-hours away from Miami. It is the fourth addition in the McLaren Ultimate Series, after the Senna, the P1, and the F1. Speedtail is the fastest ever McLaren has produced with production limited to just 106 cars. Click below to launch slideshow > Specifications The Speedtail is powered by a modified M840T from the 720S and a hybrid powertrain to generate 1,036 hp (773 kW; 1,050 PS). The Speedtail uses a carbon fibre monocoque, with the passenger seats integrated into the chassis, as well as dihedral doors like other McLaren models. Performance The company claims that the Speedtail has a top speed of 402.3 km/h (250 mph) and can accelerate from 0–299 km/h (0–186 mph) in 12.8 seconds. Key Technologies The car recharges while driving, though a wireless charging pad is included with the car, trickle-charging it when not in use. The Speedtail is fitted with electrochromic glass, which darkens at the push of a button, eliminating the need for sun visors and also incorporates LED lights in the interior. The Speedtail does not feature door mirrors, instead of using HD cameras mounted on the front guards that pop out when the ignition is turned on, and retract inside when the “Velocity mode” is activated, which the company states are to reduce drag. The front wheels feature carbon fibre static covers to further reduce drag. On the exterior, it features hydraulically actuated active rear aerodynamic control surfaces, which are formed in flexible carbon fibre and are an integral part of the rear clamshell. Interior The Speedtail has a 3-seat layout, similar to the preceding F1, which has the driver sitting at the centre of the car, and slightly forward of the two passenger seats. The interior of the Speedtail features “directional leather finish” which McLaren says “makes it easy to slide into the seat but then subtly holds the occupant in place while they drive,” and is strong enough that it can be used in place of carpet on the floor of the Speedtail. The interior also features “Titanium Deposition Carbon Fibre” (which is when “a micron-thin layer of titanium is fused directly onto the weave and becomes an integral part of the carbon fibre’s construction.”), as well as Thin-Ply Technology Carbon Fibre (TPT), consisting of countless 30 micron thick layers of carbon fibre. Notable The Speedtail is not street legal in the United States, even though around 35% of the total cars were bought by American buyers. A spokeswoman for the company stated that the car may be legal, pending approval by NHTSA, to be imported into the U.S. under the “Show or Display” law, which exempts cars that are “historically or technologically significant” from NHTSA safety standards but requires that owners not drive the vehicle more than 2,500 miles in a 12-month period.   • Kross Studio Releases "Star Wars" Inspired Ultimate Collector Sets

An Eminent Design Object with an Immersive Visual Experience The powerful and precious nature of the crystals required them to be stored in armored crates for transport. Faithful to the film storytelling, Kross Studio conceived an official reproduction of those containers, made of wood and aluminum. More than 700 parts were necessary to produce each container, scaled to half the original film dimensions of 3.94 feet long (1.20 meters). Fully hand-assembled and hand-painted, the containers embody the iconic saga story down to the smallest detail. Every aspect of these substantial art objects, like fine sculptures, have been thoroughly conceptualized and executed with immersive details that take the viewer into the Star Wars galaxy, from the electronic control panel to the backlit manifest panel inscribed in the Aurebesh language of the Galactic Empire. Inside, the container is divided into nine storage units. Three interior sections secure three removable capsules, containing: the Death Star Tourbillon watch, three accompanying timepiece straps sets, and the genuine movie prop kyber crystal, as featured in the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The other 6 free storage spaces within the crate offer ample storage space for collectors to house their personal Star Wars collectibles and ephemera, secured within a removable top cover. Inspired by the Death Star Legacy Kross Studio took up the challenge of the central tourbillon - a mechanical complication honoring the prominent Death Star. Featured in a 45 mm black DLC coated grade 5 titanium case, the captivating Death Star-inspired Tourbillon cage makes one revolution per minute. On the surface of the Death Star-inspired Tourbillon, a green superlaser cannon stands reminiscent of the space station’s kyber crystal enabled power. The Death Star-inspired Tourbillon watch itself tells us a great story of passion, craftsmanship and advanced technology. Notable technical innovations are highlighted such as the house-developed manual-winding mechanical movement that delivers a robust 5-day power reserve. The hands have been affixed to a peripheral display that orbits 360 degrees around the tourbillon. A traditional crown system has been replaced by an ingenious, inset push-button system. Kross Studio developed a D-ring shaped crown on the case back for winding the watch, stowed out of sight to help maintain the timepiece’s sleek, space-age styling. These clean lines are also preserved by cleverly hiding quick-release buttons on the underside of the case. This practical feature will doubtless be welcomed by collectors, allowing a quick change of the straps from the included calfskin leather strap to either of the two other included rubber straps. Celebrate in Our Own Galaxy Endlessly explore this beautiful design piece, where Star Wars iconography is subtly inserted to sublimate the whole, such as the esthetic Galactic Empire emblem and the push-button featuring an engraving in Aurebesh script - one of the most widely used alphabets in the Star Wars galaxy. Moreover, the hour hand takes the shape of an Imperial-Class Star Destroyer, the bane of the rebellion, while the minute hand appears as a Super-Class Star Destroyer, able to carry no less than 38,000 stormtroopers. At last, the fixed hours wheel, filled with white superluminova "blue emission”, is inspired by the lighting halls embedded in the Imperial vessels. Only 10 of these Death Star-inspired Collector Sets will ever be produced, but their launch is just the first of more exciting Star Wars-inspired products to come from Kross Studio as they look forward to bringing the most breathtaking and immersive experiences to their fans and customers.     This past weekend in Plantation, Mayor Lynn Stoner joined Randy Hetrick, former Navy SEAL and founder of TRX Training, the creator of the “Black and Yellow” straps you’ve likely seen hanging in gyms and health clubs across the country, to launch “OutFit,” an innovative mobile fitness service that some early customers are describing as the “Uber of Fitness”.   • Destination Quiet: Healing Through Light with Photographer Ian Patrick O’Connor

    Ian Patrick O’Connor has lived many lives, and could be called many things. Photographer, Artist, Skateboard Photographer, SkARTist (a hybrid title for professional skateboarders who make art, and vice versa) or Surfer. The most striking quality Ian possess is his enviable aura of shaman-esque calm, stripped of ego or any hint of pretentiousness. He is calm, cool, collected, and seems to have cracked the secret to enlightenment. I would add most importantly, Ian is a Healer, and his solo exhibit “Present + Transcend” is an achievement in reaching Nirvana through photography. To celebrate the run of “Present + Transcend,” which is displayed at Soho Beach House, Ian participated in an art talk moderated by Oolite Arts’ Vice President of Programming; Esther Park. Ian and Esther discussed his work, technique, and backstory on the rooftop of Soho Beach House, as sunset slowly faded into nightfall, under the spell of what artists like to call “the God hour.” The photos comprising Ian’s dual series “Present + Transcend” are a healthy dose of calm. Mother Nature is Ian’s studio. He’s managed to capture quiet moments, from the desolate deserts of Joshua Tree, to places a little closer to home; Miami, Kendall, Homestead, and Key Largo. A paper square and 4 x 5 film create a Floridian wonderland of zen, commanded through Ian’s lens. He proves luxe exotic locations aren’t required to find beauty, or better yet, solace and inner peace. One of the more eye catching photos from “Transcend” was birthed in Kendall Hammocks Park. Looking at this particular photo, one would think they’ve been transported to an Amazonian retreat, a guiding orange square as their light source. Ian describes the process of the series as “seeing something, and the creative Gods whisper to go make that into a photo.” 11th & Alton Photo Courtesy of Ian Patrick O’Connor official website “Transcend” introduces Ian’s foray into light and color therapy, while in conversation with Nature. “Transcend” aims to transfer positive energy through photos. One of the inspirations for this project he attributes to Dr. Masaru Emoto’s book The Hidden Messages in Water. So, about the square. The color square is the focal part, something the eye can’t help but return to. A port in a storm from Nature’s wildness. Something about the square provides shelter telling you It’s all going to be okay. The square is a repeating theme in Ian’s body of work. A mantra even. The technicality involves matching a roll of paper (the color square) to align with Ian’s 4 x 5 film. In order to capture this moment of meditative bliss, while choosing unadulterated outdoor elements as a backdrop, Ian describes having to battle the elements. Rain, wind, and all the violent abruptness one faces when control is surrendered to landscape. Also not (always) having official commercial permits to shoot. “Present + Transcend” is the pay off for enduring this struggle. A struggle that delivers a full healing process, not just for Ian himself, but for the viewer. Ian intentionally matches the square to the landscape, which achieves a therapeutic absorption via color. Transcend #2, 2017 Photo Courtesy of Ian Patrick O’Connor official website Prior to Ian’s fine art career, and in a previous life, he spent years as a professional skateboard photographer; still loved and idolized amongst the skate community today. His career switch is something of a punk Cinderella story. Growing up in Key Largo, which Ian describes as a weird place for one’s childhood years, skateboarding became an outlet and interest. Fast forward to the 1990’s, Ian fell into Miami’s skate scene while simultaneously taking photography classes at Miami Dade College. Ian became a staff photographer for Skateboard Magazine and Adio Footwear, soon solidifying himself within the beautifully chaotic world of professional skateboarding. One of his most notable skate subjects includes Mark Gonzales, a pioneer of modern street skateboarding. Ian’s time as a SkARTist however was only the beginning that would lay the foundation for his fine art career. The presence of landscape and natural surroundings is a constant through Ian’s body of work, and something that he became drawn to while traveling all over the world taking photos of skateboarders. Eventually Ian out grew this period of his life.“I just remember being in a ditch in Arizona shooting this guy doing technical tricks…and I was laying on my back in the heat…and I didn’t find the photos interesting. I became bored of shooting skating.” Shortly after, Ian spent time with artist Doug Aitken which he describes as “a pivotal moment” and “eye opening” to the world of contemporary art. But knowing and appreciating this portion of Ian’s life provides even more context to his work in “Present + Transcend.” Swap out empty parking lots, abandoned concrete structures, and temperamental skateboarders for Mother Nature in her purest unadulterated form. All while trying to capture a moment of bliss suspended in time. When describing the skill needed for skateboard photography Ian explains, “It’s very difficult on a technical level, and then you have the whole thing that skateboarding isn’t permitted in a lot of places. So you have to set up a studio in the street, and get your photo while there’s guys flying around in the air. It’s pretty challenging, but it builds this base as a photographer that you can shoot anything and everything.” When asked if he would ever return to professional skateboard photography, Ian stands by his retirement firmly. Raw nature provides the chaos, and Ian’s lens provides the peace. “Present + Tranced” captures the brilliant dichotomy of chaos and calm. In times when the world may seem overbearing, and the weight of the world’s ugly dark realities can be too much, his photos are the antidote. He provides the light. All we have to do is sit, observe, and wait for the silence. Looking to the future, Ian’s long term goals include creating workshops where he can pass on his knowledge and teach younger generations how to shoot photography; whether the subjects are skateboarders or natural landscapes. In addition to exhibiting his photos in galleries, Ian hopes to add children’s hospitals as a place one can become pleasantly lost in the quiet of color and light.
