- Vellum Architecture + Design Expands Into Interior Design Services
Vellum Architecture + Design is expanding into interior design services, announcing Naomi Ferrara as Interiors Director. The award-winning firm has emerged as one of Western North Carolina’s most influential architectural firms, known for its modernist rigor rooted in warm and welcoming materials. Naomi Ferrara Joins Firm as Interiors Director While the popular mountain town’s culinary renaissance has been well documented, Asheville’s contemporary culture is quietly cultivating its own scene, resulting in homes inspired and shaped by nature. Vellum Founder Mark Rudolf, who launched his career in Aspen, says his firm’s growth follows clients’ desire for a collective vision that embraces the region’s duality – both the influx of new homeowners from South Florida and the Northeast, as well as its authentic landscape. As Interiors Director, Ferrara deepens and integrates Vellum’s expertise with comprehensive services spanning architectural planning stages through installation. Rudolf says Vellum’s ethos is connecting people and place. “We create homes that are responsive to their surroundings, and Naomi is a central figure in weaving together the spirit and intention of the overall structure and dwelling experience.” Mark Rudolf, Vellum Founder Ferrara, who specializes in custom millwork, cabinetry and functional space planning, worked in South Florida (Miami), Israel and South Africa for nearly 20 years prior to joining Vellum. She’s completed high-profile residences in La Gorce and Continuum on Miami Beach, as well as The Settings in Black Mountain, NC, while holding positions at Sharon Lewis Design (Miami), IDology (NC), and other notable firms. “I look forward to leveraging my diverse experience and cultural perspectives to elevate Vellum’s design services for our clients,” Ferrara said. - Reef Corps Global: A Partnership Between Divers Paradise and Coral City Foundation for Coral Conservation
Divers Paradise and the Coral City Foundation have announced the establishment of Reef Corps Global (RCG), a collaborative initiative dedicated to coral restoration and conservation efforts. Located in Key Biscayne, Florida, Divers Paradise and the Coral City Foundation have united forces to engage recreational scuba divers, veterans, and students in a global mission to protect and restore coral reefs. Reef Corps, a non-profit organization, commences its efforts right here in Miami, focusing on developing best practices and operating procedures in coral protection and restoration. The organization also emphasizes ocean health awareness and the importance of public-private partnerships to safeguard our oceans. The first significant project undertaken by Reef Corps involves supporting the Ocean Rescue Alliance in creating a state-of-the-art coral amplification lab near downtown Miami. The ORAI lab will have the capacity to grow tens of thousands of coral fragments for restoration and research annually. Additionally, the lab will serve as a sanctuary for several hundred mother colonies for bleaching rescue. Reef Corps will contribute to planning and fundraising for the lab, and Divers Paradise will subsequently integrate the lab into a new program for training divers in restoration techniques using the lab’s coral micro-fragments. Reef Corps is committed to exploring and deploying new technology to accelerate coral reef restoration, conservation, and citizen science engagement. This includes underwater live streaming cameras for reef health surveillance, water monitoring technology, coral bleaching detection, treatments for coral disease, coral spawning/aquaculture techniques, invasive species control, detection and removal of ghost traps, gear, and trash, as well as diving practices and equipment designed to minimize environmental impact. In pursuit of its mission, Reef Corps aims to establish a “Reef School” where recreational, commercial, and scientific divers can enroll in classes covering coral biology, restoration, micro-fragmentation, land-based coral husbandry, aquaculture systems management, and disease management. The program will culminate in a Reef School certification, equipping divers and scientists with the necessary skills to actively contribute to coral restoration projects. Erik Jarnryd, co-Owner of Divers Paradise, told us “We believe the only way in which we can preserve healthy oceans for future generations is to energize a new generation of citizen scientists willing to bring their passion and become a force for change.” Colin Foord, Co-Founder of the Coral City Foundation, emphasized, “Miami is on the front line of the coral crisis, and Reef Corps Global will offer divers the hands-on training to become underwater warriors in the fight to save our planet’s imperiled coral ecosystems.” The launch of Reef Corps will be celebrated at Divers Paradise in Key Biscayne with an expedition dive to survey coral health in a nearby reef on Sunday, March 10, at 9 AM (8 AM arrival). This two-tank dive is open to all interested certified divers, and all proceeds will contribute to funding Reef Corps programs. For further details, call 305-361-3483. By ML staff. - How to Use Wall Art to Enhance Your Living Room Setup
Your living room is the main space in your house that mirrors your identity and serves as a visual storyteller reflecting your passion and creativity towards interior designing. Simple additions like decals and wall hangings can transform a bland looking wall into a space with personality and a warm cosmopolitan appearance. Here are some imaginative ways on how to go about it. Add floating shelves The best way to show off your prized collection of books, wall art, plants and ornamental items is by installing floating shelves. Apart from providing additional storage, these floating shelves give you an opportunity to express your personality through the items you have so thoughtfully placed on them. You can browse galleries on sites like Desenio to see various prints, wall art and canvases to adorn backdrops for these shelves. Install ornate mirrors A mirror can not only make your living area look enlarged, but also adds a lot of elegance and sophistication to the space By selecting an ornamental mirror with an eye-catching frame and placing it strategically to reflect outside light, you can easily make your living room appear much brighter. Create a gallery wall Inspired artwork gives a creative texture and adds drama and visual impact to any bare space. You can arrange a meandering photo gallery wall in a large expanse in your living room, for example above the long sofa or on an accent wall behind the table. Photo walls are also ideal for the empty wall areas along hallways and staircases. It may take some time to find the right arrangement, but once done these simple tricks will add warmth and color to any living room. Botanical prints Art which features flora and fauna, not only infuses greenery but reflects your love for nature as well. Botanical prints also give a light feel to your living room. The type of plant should be chosen as per the mood you are looking for, like for example palms will give a tropical feel. You can install real planters on the floor to add a vibe to the living space. Use string art String art is finding its way back to the living room in a big way and that is something very good. These intricately designed strings can add beauty and symmetry to an otherwise bland and bare living room wall space. The carefully designed strings with its intricate details are bound to vow your guests once they gaze upon these works of art. Canvas art If you are looking for something special, framed canvas art with a fun color palette will set off your decor in a magical way. A large scale canvas hanging above the coffee table can transform a bare room into a modern living space. Using canvas art you can also decorate your wall in a flash. This is a popular medium which is easy to paint on and you can choose a subject and color to fit your personality. Bring wildlife into your home If you love wild animals, show your adoration for them by bringing them inside your living room.Use framed images of the animals you love or have photographed and find a space for them on the wall as animals can bring out the best in humans. Go for pictures that show scenes of animals in their natural habitat and roaming peacefully in order to boost the serotonin levels that boost vibes to your living room walls. Turn to the sky A photograph of things in the sky,be it a rising sun or a cluster of clouds can look like a window and make your space like an open-air retreat. Having a framed canvas of a plane or a destination of your choice on an empty wall will be sure to make for an inspiring living wall design. By ML staff. Images courtesy of Desenio.
