As a hijabi woman of color, your journey from being named as one of YouTube's "Women to Watch" to your current role as a prominent figure in the beauty and lifestyle realm, serving as a voice for a largely underrepresented audience of women, truly stands out.  Can you share a pivotal moment or experience that shaped your path along this remarkable journey? Aysha Harun (AH): The pleasure is mine! I've been an online creator for over a decade now, but I think my most pivotal moment that really shifted the entire trajectory of my career was when I was invited to be a Featured Creator at Vidcon US in LA in 2017. I was finishing up my last semester in college and had less than 70,000 subscribers on YouTube when I got the invite and it kind of felt like that "I made it" moment for me as a creator. I was the first female Muslim creator to be invited to VidCon, which was really huge at that time, and it felt like all my hard work over the years had finally paid off. It also gave me that final push to take content creation more seriously and ultimately influenced my decision to go full-time and chase my dreams of becoming a successful creator. ML: How did your journey as a beauty and lifestyle creator begin, and what inspired you to delve into this field? AH: My journey began when I was only 16 year old. I was a young teen in highschool that loved watching beauty creators like Jackie Aina, Michelle Phan, and many more OG YouTubers. It was also the time I was experimenting more with my makeup and fashion styles as a young hijabi and I just picked up the camera one summer day and recorded a Get Ready With Me. At the time I didn't see anyone that looked like me creating beauty videos so unknowingly I was creating the representation of myself and overtime I was able to grow and foster this incredible community of women who finally felt represented on YouTube. ML: As an expert in modest curvy fashion, could you share some tips for staying stylish and comfortable during the warmer months of Spring and Summer 2024 while ensuring coverage that stays within one’s comfort zone? How do you recommend incorporating current trends into modest fashion choices? AH: Sticking to certain fabrics that keep you cool in the summer is key to staying comfortable, but also stylish in the warmer months. This took me a while to master, but linen has quickly become my best friend for the warmer months. It is light and airy, and so breathable and genuinely keeps you much cooler than other fabrics. I love finding tailored linen pieces that compliment my curvy body, but still remain modest. My go-to's for the summer include flowy linen tops with tailored pants, linen blazers and even linen maxi dresses. Layering pieces are also a modest girl's best friend, and my favorite hack - especially for deep v-neck tops or open backs - is to purchase mock neck crop tops with built-in bras to wear underneath my clothing pieces. It minimizes the amount of layers you need to wear, while also providing all the coverage needed for modesty. I also just hate wearing traditional bras and this is MUCH more comfortable. ML: Your signature two-toned lips have garnered attention and admiration. Can you share some beauty tips specifically tailored for women of color, including techniques for achieving stunning two-toned lip looks? AH: What's crazy about my naturally two-toned lips is that I use to hate how my lips looked. It was a huge insecurity of mine as it's not entirely common, but overtime I grew to love them. It's like a natural lip liner! When it comes to women-of-color or black women, finding your signature brown lip liner will take you so far! Mine has been Make Up For Ever's Artist Color Pencil in Limitless Brown. It's the perfect deep brown for deeper skin tones and pairs so well with every single lip shade. I always start out with a brown lip liner then fill in my lips with a lighter peachy shade for my signature two-toned lip. ML: Your philanthropic efforts have made a significant impact, already raising over $100,000 for families in need across Yemen, Palestine, Syria, and Ethiopia. What initially sparked your commitment to giving back, and how do you choose the causes you support? AH: A huge pillar in the Islamic faith is charity, also known as Zakat, and I always knew I was given this platform for a reason. Not only to inspire women to feel good about themselves, but also to use my platform for good and give back. In 2018 I began a series on my YouTube channel called The Ramadan Daily and since it has commenced, it has continued to be the most engaged period for my audience. In 2019 I was approached by Islamic Relief USA to raise funds for Muslim countries in need of food packages during Ramadan and I was honored to join the movement. That year my community on YouTube  raised nearly $30K and was able to provide thousands of food packages to Syrian refugees. Ever since then I have continued to partner with different Islamic organizations to raise money for food/water in countries of need during Ramadan and it's become a pillar in my Ramadan Daily series. I choose causes based on current need, so for example this past Ramadan I partnered with Human Concern International to raise money for food and medical aid in Gaza and raised nearly $30K for that cause. In addition I also supported Pious Projects and Islamic Relief USA on their For Mama campaigns raising funds for urgent maternal care globally, which as a woman I deeply resonate with. ML: Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future, both personally and professionally? AH: This year I'm launching a special product collaboration with a black-owned beauty brand and I'm so excited for that to launch as it's my first makeup launch ever! It is a brand I genuinely love and support and the product is incredible so I can't wait for everyone to try it out! I'm also moving more towards launching my own inclusive modest fashion line in the future so I've been playing around with designs and sample making which has been such a fun process! Prior to the release of “Cowboy Carter,” Beyoncé explained that her album’s links to country were motivated by industry gatekeeping. She was likely referencing the hostile reception she experienced after her performance of “Daddy Lessons” with The Chicks during the 2016 Country Music Awards. Tanner Adell is one of the four Black, female country singers featured on ‘Blackbiird.’ Michael Hickey/Getty Images Feeling “unwelcome,” Beyoncé said she decided to delve into Black Americans’ “rich musical archive” for inspiration, and “Cowboy Carter” became a project akin to her previous album, 2022’s “Renaissance” – a way to teach listeners about Black music and Black history. One of the songs, “Blackbiird,” is a rendition of the Beatles’ “Blackbird,” from their 1968 White Album. The Beatles’ “Blackbird” has a folk bent, but they were certainly influenced by country and other American genres, especially Black rhythm and blues. All of this musical history comes together in Beyoncé’s cover of “Blackbird,” whose composer, Paul McCartney, has a producer credit. Beyoncé’s version appears to retain the Beatles’ instrumentation, incorporating McCartney’s acoustic guitar and foot tapping. But, importantly, Beyoncé also includes the voices of four Black female country singers: Tanner Adell, Tiera Kennedy, Reyna Roberts and Brittney Spencer. Black musicians have long used the symbol of the blackbird to describe their careers – the isolation they’ve felt and the discrimination they’ve faced along the way. To appreciate Beyoncé’s “Blackbiird,” we think it’s important to go beyond the shadow McCartney’s song has cast over the symbol. The legend of McCartney’s ‘Blackbird’ Many listeners hear the Beatles’ “Blackbird” as a civil rights song. Part of that may have to do with the evolving ways McCartney has talked about the song in the decades since its release, which we address in our 2023 book, “Blackbird: How Black Americans Sang the Beatles Into Being – and Sang Back to Them Ever After.” After the release of the White Album, McCartney did mention “civil rights” and “riots” during a recording that captured a conversation about the track with the singer-songwriter Donovan. McCartney also mentions the “offense” Diana Ross took when he played “Blackbird” for her. For the next three decades, though, he didn’t publicly connect the track to civil rights. Then, in Barry Miles’ 1997 biography of McCartney, McCartney says “a Black woman” was the inspiration for “Blackbird.” In the 21st century, however, McCartney has been keen to make connections to various places and events associated with the movement during live performances. He mentioned “the Southern states” in 2002; by the 2010s, he started regularly identifying “Alabama” and “Arkansas.” Then, once McCartney specified “Little Rock,” he drew an even clearer connection to the Little Rock Nine, who integrated Central High in 1957. That year, a teenage McCartney was auditioning for John Lennon at the Woolton Village Fete in Liverpool, England, 11 years before “Blackbird” was composed and recorded. Whatever the origins, McCartney now clearly wants listeners to hear his song in relation to civil rights and current movements like Black Lives Matter. We aren’t suggesting McCartney’s feelings about these movements are insincere. But when we trace the evolution of his stories, we see the former Beatle working in earnest to emphasize “Blackbird” as a civil rights anthem after the fact. Dreams of the skies With “Blackbiird,” Beyoncé reasserts a legacy of Black artistry that predates McCartney. Centuries before the Beatles, birds and flight served as powerful symbols in Black storytelling and arts. Enslaved Africans in the Americas imagined freedom by circulating tales about gaining the ability to fly. Their return home to Africa became possible when a spiritual leader arrived with a “secret password,” one that would allow them to soar as a flock. Children’s author Virginia Hamilton’s illustrated retelling of the myth compares flying Africans to “blackbirds” with “Black, shiny wings flappin’ against the blue up there.” The trope finds expression in lonely birds, too; some versions of the myth center on a single bird or flying person. The absence of a flock and the inability to fly are metaphors for slavery’s brutality, particularly the ways in which families were torn apart. Blackbirds take flight Black musicians in the 20th century often used birds to explore themes of isolation and discrimination. Sad, dejected birds populate the blues, including Lonnie Johnson’s 1926 song “Blackbird Blues.” “If I was a blackbird, I’d pack my troubles on my back,” he mournfully sings. “I would leave this world, and I never would look back.” Then there was Florence Mills, one of the most famous Black American stage performers in the 1920s. Mills debuted “I’m a Little Blackbird Looking for a Bluebird” in 1924. The lyrics are explicit: She wants to find “a bluebird” – a metaphor for happiness – the kind that “white folks” are allowed to pursue. Although Mills didn’t compose it, the song became one of her most well-known and an anthem for racial tolerance. In interviews, Mills also detailed the song’s symbolism, connecting the bird’s predicament to the lack of opportunities Black Americans faced. With her talent and success, she felt an obligation to her community. The blackbird of show business Nina Simone co-wrote and released “Blackbird” in September 1963, five years before the Beatles released the White Album. While Mills’ blackbird yearns for something better, Simone’s pessimistic speaker tells “little sorrow” not to bother trying to fly. McCartney’s “Blackbird” is upbeat, and its entreaty to “Take these broken wings and learn to fly” seems like a hopeful response to Simone’s “Blackbird,” although he has never mentioned the connection. Herb Snitzer/Michael Ochs Archives via Getty Images Like Mills, Simone has used the image of a blackbird to describe her career and its obstacles. “I am the blackbird of show business,” Simone announced in a 1963 interview with Newsweek. The discrimination Simone experienced throughout her life included a rejection from Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music – a racially motivated exclusion that echoes Beyoncé’s own experiences with the country music industry. Bringing Black artists into the light Beyoncé is far from the only Black artist to cover the Beatles’ “Blackbird.” Ramsey Lewis was first to do so, in 1968. He was followed by Billy Preston, the Paragons with Roslyn Sweat, Sylvester James, Jr., Bobby McFerrin, Alicia Keys and Bettye LaVette, the last of whom we interviewed for our book. LaVette has performed her interpretation since 2010. She tweaks the lyrics, reciting them in the first person and turning the song into a meditation on her own struggles and triumphs. The song appears on LaVette’s 2020 album, “Blackbirds,” a tribute to Black women forebears. “My bridges,” LaVette called the artists whose songs she interprets, including Simone’s “I Hold No Grudge.” In the myth of the flying Africans, a community’s leader is responsible for its uplift. There are echoes of this imperative in “Cowboy Carter,” a record premised on recovering Black contributions to the country genre. The album is full of collaborations with other musicians, from the famous to the relatively unknown. Beyoncé’s platform has already elevated the four young Black women featured on “Blackbiird.” In this way, the artist continues her broader project of linking the past to present, of giving other Black artists the space to come out of the darkness and into the light. Perhaps the familiar sounds from the Beatles’ 1968 track will encourage listeners to think about what’s different in 2024: Black women’s voices harmonizing with each other. The effect prevents listeners from planting their feet in one voice, one genre, or one century – an experience that can be both destabilizing and liberating. Like flying. The prestigious American Heritage Schools’ Broward Campus recently celebrated a double victory. The School’s Speech & Debate team secured its fifth consecutive state championship win at the Florida Forensic League's Varsity State Tournament. Additionally, its Mock Trial Team won State Champions of the Florida High School Mock Trial Competition. Five-Peat Phenomenon: Speech & Debate Team Claims Fifth Consecutive State Championship Victory The American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, Speech & Debate team continued their reign of excellence, capturing their fifth consecutive state championship win at the Florida Forensic League (FFL)'s Varsity State Tournament in Wellington, FL. Competing against nearly 600 students from 56 schools across the state, the team was victorious, claiming the overall team award and solidifying their position as a powerhouse in the field. In an effort to bring awareness of the dangers of impaired driving ahead of prom night and graduation, American Heritage Schools’ Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club at its Broward Campus hosted Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)’s impactful “Power of You(th)®” presentation on campus for 11th and 12th grade students on April 10. The assembly was organized by Harlee Ross, a junior at American Heritage Schools who also serves as the SADD Club president. According to MADD, 13,384 people were killed in alcohol-related traffic crashes in 2021 – that’s one person every 39 minutes and 37 people a day killed by someone’s choice to drive drunk. During the “Power of You(th)” presentation, over 600 seniors and juniors from American Heritage Schools learned about the potentially deadly consequences of impaired driving. The DUI exposition featured a demonstration of what can happen if someone drives a car under the influence of drugs and alcohol. A DUI crashed car, provided by Guardian Fleet Services, was on campus for students to see first-hand examples of these dangers. Members from the Plantation Fire Department extracted mannequins from the mock car crash using the jaws of life tools while narrating the scene. Notable executives from MADD were in attendance including Heather Geronemus, Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale founder, and Jennifer Walsh, MADD South Florida area executive director. Bree Ann Marie Camacho, a young woman and victim, shared her story and provided tips and tricks on making informed decisions. Students also heard impactful stories and words from Geronemus and Ross. American Heritage Schools’ SADD Club, which was founded by Alumnus Harrison Ross in 2020, is a peer-to-peer education, prevention and activism organization dedicated to preventing destructive decisions, particularly underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving and more. “Power of You(th)” is one of MADD’s programs that provides youth with research-based information on the dangers of underage drinking and drug use. It aims to prepare youth with the tools to resist peer pressure and empower them to take the next step and influence their friends to make the right choices. “We’re grateful to work with MADD to educate our students and bring awareness to the dangers of impaired and destructive driving, especially ahead of special celebrations such as prom and graduation,” said Dr. Doug Laurie, president of American Heritage Schools. “We are proud of our students who are part of the SADD Club and helped bring this impactful presentation to our students.” “It was a great honor to work with the SADD Club and the staff at American Heritage Schools to once again host MADD’s Power of You(th) presentation on campus to educate students on the tragedies that drunk driving causes,” said Geronemus. “Events such as these raise awareness and put us one step closer to seeing a future with no more victims of this 100 percent preventable crime.” At 16 years old, Camacho's life was irrevocably altered when her beloved 13-year-old sister, Kaley Marie Camacho, tragically lost her life in a devastating drunk driving crash. On that fateful day, Camacho, her father and sister were driving when their vehicle was violently struck by a driver who was three times over the legal limit and recklessly speeding at over 100 mph illegally in the bus lane. To compound the tragedy, the reckless driver fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of destruction and heartache. Feeding South Florida® – the leading hunger-relief organization in South Florida, is seeking proposals from qualified Food Service Vendors to provide unitized breakfast, lunch and snacks for the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) during 2024. Interested Food Service Vendors will be expected to provide breakfast, lunch and snack meals for approximately 23 sites from June 3 through Aug. 16, 2024. Some of the sites will serve breakfast and lunch; while some sites will serve lunch and snacks. Summer months are some of the most difficult times for South Florida families because when school is not in session, children don’t have access to free or reduced-price school meals. In South Florida more than 300,000 kids rely on free or reduced meals during the school year. “We’re seeking proposals from qualified Food Service Vendors to provide unitized breakfast, lunch and snacks for the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) during 2024,” said Paco Vélez, president and CEO of Feeding South Florida. “When school is out for summer, kids may not have access to free or reduced meals, leaving them hungry as their parents struggle to find additional resources for food. Participating in the Summer Food Service Program helps Feeding South Florida provide nutritious food to South Florida families and fill the void of the necessary nutrients children need to live, learn and play.” The contract awarded will be given to a Food Service Vendor with the above capacity for the 2024 SFSP Program Year. Feeding South Florida will consider Food Service Vendors able to prepare the estimated number of meals stated in this contract for children aged 18 and under in compliance with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) SFSP meal pattern requirements.
