Miami Music Project is pleased to announce that it has been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for a Grants for Arts Projects award of $50,000. Every year, Miami Music Project has the opportunity to train hundreds of young musicians, who receive nearly 400 hours each of immersive and transformative music education through its free Signature Programs. This grant will support Miami Music Project's programming, ensuring all students flourish musically and academically. This grant is part of an NEA initiative to award 1,135 Grants for Arts Projects awards totaling more than $37 million as part of its second round of fiscal year 2024 grants. In the words of President Anna Klimala: “Upon celebrating National Teacher Appreciation Week, we continue to find reasons to acknowledge and appreciate our Teaching Artists, who serve as critical educators and mentors to the children of Miami Music Project. Our educators combine world-class musicianship with social responsibility and sensitivity, making them key allies and advocates of every child’s potential. Miami Music Project has become one of the most successful El Sistema-Inspired programs in North America. Through a combination of Social Emotional Learning curriculum, academic tutoring, and mentoring, Miami Music Project has created opportunities for deep arts learning experiences for hundreds of young learners. In this task, 63 Teaching Artists work throughout the program sites five days a week. Since 2013, the National Endowment for the Arts has been a crucial partner in advancing the Miami Music Project's mission of fostering social progress through music education. This visit is important for building a relationship with your vet, which is key for managing your puppy's health in the long run. During the vet visit, your puppy will begin their vaccination series. Core vaccines usually cover protection against parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, and rabies. Your vet will give you a schedule detailing when these vaccines should be given and when to come back for booster shots. Following this schedule is vital for ensuring your puppy stays healthy in the long term. Depending on where you live and your lifestyle with your pet, your vet might suggest other vaccines, like those for Lyme disease or Bordetella (kennel cough). Vaccinations are timed carefully to provide immunity without overwhelming your puppy's developing system. Discuss with your veterinarian the risks associated with vaccinations and how to strike a balance considering your puppy's exposure levels. Certain vaccines are administered in a series to gradually strengthen your puppy's system. Make sure to maintain a record of all vaccinations given and set up reminders for future doses. Flea infestations can result in itching, allergies, and in severe cases, anemia. Numerous products available provide protection against fleas, ticks, and heartworms, simplifying care management. Before giving your puppy any medication, it's important to consult with your veterinarian since puppies can react differently compared to adult dogs. It’s a good idea to check your puppy's fur for fleas and ticks, particularly after outdoor activities like walks or playtime. Different breeds have varying requirements depending on their size, activity levels, and health conditions. Sea Tow® – the nation’s leading on-water marine assistance provider – urges boaters to prepare for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season which started on June 1 and runs until Nov. 30. While the usual peak in activity occurs in Aug. and Sept., storms have formed ahead of that official start date in the last decade and 2024 is no exception. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) outlook for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which spans from June 1 to November 30, predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal season, a 10% chance of a near-normal season and a 5% chance of a below-normal season. NOAA is forecasting a range of 17 to 25 total named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 8 to 13 are forecast to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 4 to 7 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). Forecasters have a 70% confidence in these ranges. “From experience, we know that just one storm can cause devastation and uproot lives,” said Sea Tow CEO, Joseph Frohnhoefer III. “The time to prepare is now. We encourage all boaters to be prepared and understand the steps that need to be taken if a storm were to make landfall in their area to protect themselves and their boat. Sea Tow’s team of knowledgeable and experienced captains are available to help.” The following is a list of boating tips to consider before, during and after a hurricane. General Preparedness Prior to a Storm: Know what your marine insurance policy covers. Read it and ask your insurance agent questions. Some insurance companies may require owners to pull their vessel out of the water during a storm or store it in a specific location while the storm is a threat. Ensure your policy will cover the recovery of your vessel, transportation or storage if needed, repair of your vessel or, in the worst-case scenario, the demolition and disposal of your vessel. If your boat is kept at a marina, check your marina policies to gain an understanding of requirements and procedures. Before a Storm When a storm is approaching, determine where your boat will ride out the storm. If your boat needs to be relocated on land, position it on a trailer close to a strong building to break the wind and away from debris and strap it down securely. To anchor the trailer, place blocks beneath it and deflate the tires so it doesn’t shift around due to high winds. If the boat must stay in the water, secure it to the dock with longer, thicker lines to ensure it doesn’t sway during the storm. Ensure there aren’t any loose items on the boat that could potentially fly around during the storm and cause more damage. Take video inventory of all property onboard and place legal documents such as policies, licenses, and registration in a secure, dry place away from the vessel. During a Storm Monitor radio, TV, NOAA Weather Radio, and/or hurricane hotline telephone numbers for official bulletins for storm updates. Do not return to the vessel until there is an official announcement that the storm has passed, or the marina is open. After a Storm Once it is safe to return to the vessel, inspect it for any structural damage. If the boat was damaged during the storm, take photos, and report it to your insurance company as soon as possible. It’s imperative to only work with licensed and insured companies to recover your vessel. In many cases your insurance company has a pre-arranged relationship with a recovery company, and in many cases it’s Sea Tow. Miami Living: What inspired you to first start posting videos on social media? Brandon Farris: I’ve been making weird comedy videos as far back as 7 years old I believe. Back then it was just for me and friends because there was no easy way to upload that footage. I started uploading my music on Youtube first because in my early 20’s I wanted to do music as a career and I saw the benefit of being online. It wasn’t until February of 2014 when my sister tagged me in the Ice Bucket Challenge that I uploaded my first honest piece of comedy and it blew up! Over 70,000 views and over 90% disliked.. so, it wasn’t the best start for me and my fragile ego. Miami Living: What was it like living out of your car and regularly posting videos on social media? Brandon Farris: Living out of my car was a lot of things! Lonely at times, exciting, terrifying...hot. Making videos kind of kept me sane a bit. There is a lot of time to think when you have no place to go and you’re sitting in your car. I think looking back I loved it and am grateful for it, but I think in the moment I would have given anything to be where I am today. I think that’s where my drive came from (pun intended). Miami Living: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced living on the road? Brandon Farris: I found out pretty quickly that finding a place to sleep would be one of the biggest challenges. I lived in Burbank, around LA, and they do a great job about not letting people sleep in their vehicles comfortably. I’ve been kicked out of many parking lots, got the cops called on me, had people shine flashlights and bang on my windows while I was asleep telling me to move. It was tough for me personally to comfortably find a place to just relax. Space was also another issue. Not a lot of room in a car for anything other than the necessities..and peanut butter. There is always room for peanut butter (which was 90% of my dinners) Miami Living: How did posting online change the course of your life? Brandon Farris: 180 degree shift. I went from not having a place to live, or comfortably sleep, or even a place to sit and feeling lonely, to having an amazing wife and two beautiful children in our own home. It was night and day for me. I’m beyond grateful for where I am and even more grateful for where I was and what I did to get here! Miami Living: You write “You Deserve to Laugh” in your bio, what does comedy mean to you? Brandon Farris: I wrote that very purposefully. I knew that people in the world were struggling, I was one of them, and having something to lift my mood and break me out of the thoughts of “will I live in my car forever? Will this ever work?” were incredibly beneficial for me. So I knew people needed something to give them what other creators gave me, so I decided to make it clear that I am here to show you that no matter what is happening in your life you deserve to laugh. So it had a deep meaning for me when I wrote it. It was also a big reason why I uploaded daily. People need help every day and I felt this obligation almost to be that person for whoever needed it! Miami Living: What was one of your first videos to go viral? Brandon Farris: Besides the failed Ice Bucket Challenge... I did a video where I just ranted about how I got an Oreo McFlurry from McDonalds and they just piled the Oreo on top and didn’t mix it. Just a funny late night rant that for some reason people enjoyed. That is the earliest one I can think of. MIami Living: What made you ultimately decide to pursue social media full-time? Brandon Farris: I had a looming thought before I moved to LA to live in my car of “what if I never make it?” Almost like saying, what if I never become what I want to become. It was one of those thoughts that really sank my heart into my stomach. Thinking that I might work in this restaurant the rest of my life scared me. So that initial thought is what drove me to make the leap to move where the entertainment was and make it no matter what. Miami Living: Your wife is featured in several of your videos, how has she supported you throughout the course of your social media journey? Brandon Farris: I honestly don’t think I’d be in this position without her. Full stop. Period. When I got fired, I had no place to go and she opened her home to me so I could get back on my feet. She made it possible for me to continue pursuing content and it didn’t take long until it started making money and I’m still to this day trying to repay her for that. She’s everything to me. Miami Living: What impact do you hope to leave behind with your social media content? Brandon Farris: Deep down I don’t want to leave a huge impact. I want to leave small impacts in people’s days throughout the time that I’m doing this. I don’t need the big recognition at the end. I just need to do what I’m good at and hope it inspires one person to do what I did and not settle for a life I wasn’t comfortable living. Miami Living: What was your initial impression of Miami? Brandon Farris: I loved Miami! Me and my wife went for work so we had some time to experience Miami and I really enjoyed it! Miami Living: What have been your most memorable moments in Miami? Brandon Farris: The coffee was one of the most memorable moments for me! Not even kidding, it was the greatest coffee I’ve ever had still to this day!
