Many people think of a well-built house as one where the walls are strong enough to hold up the roof so it won’t fall on them. This is reinforced by children’s stories like the Three Little Pigs , where the house made of brick is the strongest when the Big Bad Wolf comes to town. When a strong tornado passes through a neighbourhood, it results in total chaos. Debris is everywhere. Shingles and siding and bricks are thrown about. Entire roofs are tossed, often landing on neighbouring homes. Walls collapse, cars are rolled and flipped. Insulation is stuck to every surface like a strange snowfall. On July 15, a tornado struck Barrie, Ont., destroying several homes: Could anything have been done to minimize the damage in Barrie? Holding on to the roof In any windstorm, tornadoes included, the roof needs to be secured — this is due to the uplift, the same physics that allows an aircraft to fly. This runs counter to our intuition since we tend to think about roofs collapsing, not flying. The uplift is the main vulnerability of houses. The structure of residential roofs in Canada tend to be strong because they are designed to handle the heavy weight of snow in winter. For the wind, which acts in the opposite direction as the snow, it is the nails connecting the trusses to the top of the wall that become critical to ensure that the roof stays in place during a severe storm. The National Building Code of Canada requires three nails — just over three inches long — in each roof-to-wall connection . These toe nails, as they are called, are what hold the roof down in the wind. If this is done properly, the roof structure should be safe until wind speeds reach about 160 kilometres an hour . At such wind speeds, asphalt shingles may blow off but the roof structure will remain intact. Houses are not designed for tornadoes, although the building code discusses tornadoes. The requirements for fastening the walls to the foundations were developed to deal with tornadoes. These were included in the 1995 release of the National Building Code following tragic deaths in 1984 when cottages were swept into Blue Sea Lake in Québec , along with post-storm observations following a 1985 tornado in Barrie . It is now known that toe-nailed connections are the weak links in the structure, more likely to fail before the roof sheathing and before the walls pull apart from the foundation. Walls are more likely to collapse when the roof is gone, and the roof itself can become airborne. Both of these are threats to life and safety. The Northern Tornadoes Project survey in the immediate aftermath of the recent tornado in Barrie indicated that several homes did not meet the building code requirements because of missing toe nails. This is nothing new. Similar observations were made in 2009, when tornadoes landed in Vaughan , and in 2014 in Angus . Image courtesy of iko. Hurricane Strap are long, thin pieces of metal that connects the wall plate and the rafter providing an extra support. Unknown speeds To design for tornadoes, we need to know the wind speeds in tornadoes. These are rarely measured. Rather, tornado wind speeds are assessed through the damage they cause, via the Enhanced Fujita Scale . The recent Barrie tornado was assessed to have had maximum wind speeds of 210 kilometres an hour based on the damage to a few of the houses. It was a strong tornado. However, if this strong tornado had instead gone through farmers’ fields, missing all buildings and trees, then it would have been assessed as an EF-0 (90-130 km/hr) tornado even though its true strength was greater. Clearly, the use of damage to estimate the tornado wind speeds is challenging, particularly in sparsely populated areas. As a result, the reported intensity of a tornado — its maximum wind speed — depends on what it hits and, therefore, on the quality of construction. A roof with only a single toe nail would be assessed as EF-1, while properly installed toe nails yield an expected wind speed of about 195 kilometres an hour, which is EF-2 . Put another way, a wood-frame roof is expected to fail in an EF-2 tornado, while improper toe nails would lead to roof failure in an EF-1 tornado. As a result of this uncertainty, quantifying wind speeds in tornadoes is still an active topic of research and development . Nevertheless, the combination of tornado simulators , wind tunnels that create tornado vortices to define the wind forces on buildings, and full-scale laboratory tests on houses to determine their strength has helped. They’ve provided good estimates of failure-inducing wind speeds during tornadoes under a range of conditions including that of the roof-to-wall connections . Could anything have been done to mitigate the damage in this EF-2 tornado? In any tornado, the highest wind speeds only occur over a relatively small proportion of the total damage path . That means damage reduction measures can be quite effective in mitigating damage from the overall storm. If all of the houses in Barrie had been built to the building code requirements, there would have been less damage overall, although there still would have been some significant damage because of its intensity. Strapping down There is a better solution: the use of hurricane straps instead of toe nails. This well-established technology, developed to deal with hurricanes, can work to keep the roof attached to the walls in tornadoes with wind speeds up to about EF-2 . They are inexpensive, costing less than $200 per house to install, and are easy to inspect for compliance. Since EF-2 and lower-rated tornadoes represent more than 95 per cent of all tornadoes , requiring straps in the building code could reduce much of the damage of these severe storms and and significantly improve safety. While a few other things need to be done to make houses fully able to withstand EF-2 tornadoes , this adjustment would eliminate the weakest link, increasing resilience and safety by keeping the roof on the walls and stopping entire roofs from flying downwind and hitting other buildings. Léon Marchand – Swimming Léon Marchand, who is aiming for the double in the 200m breaststroke and 200m butterfly, has succeeded in the first part of his mission, qualifying with flying colors for tomorrow's two finals. Well done Léon! 31st July: Maison LVMH - Talk Malia Metella The 5th Maison LVMH Talk welcomed swimmer and Olympic medallist Malia Metella. During the discussion, she spoke about the importance of her role model, Marie-José Pérec, and the role of older generations in inspiring and motivating the younger generations of French swimmers. Miami Living Magazine had the pleasure of speaking with Toni Trucks, a standout actress renowned for her role as Lieutenant Lisa Davis on CBS/Paramount+’s hit series SEAL Team. As the show approaches its highly anticipated seventh and final season, premiering August 11th, Toni reflects on the journey of portraying the only female series regular in a male-dominated environment and the empowering experience of playing an Intelligence Officer. Beyond her role in the series, Toni shares insights into her life outside of her career and her excitement for future roles that will showcase new dimensions of her acting talent. Join us as we delve into Toni’s remarkable career and the diverse experiences that shape her life. Miami Living (ML): SEAL Team is about to wrap up its seventh and final season. Can you share your thoughts on the bittersweet experience of saying goodbye to a show that's been such a significant part of your career? Toni: When the news came that this would be our final season, I can definitely say I didn’t feel ready. We have had the privilege over seven seasons to create such full characters. It felt like they all still had a lot of stories to tell. That being said, the writers have done such a beautiful job with this season that I am really excited for the fans to take this ride with us. ML: You’ve portrayed Lt. Lisa Davis, the only female series regular on SEAL Team.   Can you walk us through the training regimen and challenges you faced to authentically portray this character? Toni: My character doesn’t normally find herself on missions these days. It’s been really fun over these past 7 seasons to go from packing parachutes and running coms to becoming an officer and helping to steer the SEAL Team from a different angle. My training during our time has run the gamut. Fitness, firearms, axe throwing, stunt fighting and phone books worth of technical jargon that would make your head spin. ML: Being a woman of color in a male-dominated series must have come with its own set of challenges and triumphs. Can you reflect on how this role has been challenging and/or empowering for you? Toni: Women currently make up roughly 22% of the military and women of color are even less. This extreme imbalance was something I considered often in my portrayal of Lt. Lisa Davis.  Numbers aside, women are excelling at all levels in the military. Lisa is a nod to the incredible women I know already exist.  I am filled with pride to be playing someone who is whip-smart, navigating tricky spaces and doing an excellent job! My hope is that Lisa’s story will ultimately inspire young women of color in any field. ML: You’re involved with TAPS, a charity supporting surviving military families. Can you tell us more about your work with this organization and what it means to you personally? Toni: I was introduced to TAPS and their important work through my outreach at SEAL Team. I was so impressed with the women in particular at the helm of this organization that I really wanted to get involved. I am now proudly serving as an honorary board member. One of the things I absolutely love is their work in youth programming, curating experiences that children may have missed out on with their loved one now gone. TAPS is serving people at every age and in every stage of grief. It is important and beautiful work. ML: You’ve had a diverse career with roles in everything from action-packed series to charming comedies. If you could switch places with any of your previous characters for a day, who would you choose and what would you do? Toni: You know, I did a Comedy Central series some years back called CORPORATE. In it I played a ridiculous news anchor named ‘Karen James’ and had the privilege of being the love interest of the late Lance Reddick, who was absolutely brilliant.  Being in that wild world and working with Lance again would be a dream. CORPORATE was definitely a show that I wish I had spent more time on. If you have never seen it… find it. ML: What’s one of your favorite ways to relax and recharge when you’re not working? Toni: My go-to relax mode includes lots of quiet time (NO TV) and sunshine. A beach or pool are equally welcome. Now when I am really wanting to energize my spirit, I absolutely love taking a trip to New York City and filling my days and nights with theatre. I always come home feeling inspired and ready to jump into the next project. ML: Looking ahead, you’ve mentioned excitement about playing a character unlike any you’ve portrayed before. Can you give us a hint about what this new role entails and what attracted you to it? Toni: I don’t yet know what is to come but I am looking forward to a new role. Bugatti has introduced the W16 Mistral, a roadster designed to travel at speeds exceeding 420 km/h while offering luxury and acoustic excellence. The car embodies Bugatti’s spirit of adventure and freedom, balancing high speed, performance, and aural pleasure. The W16 Mistral’s development began with digital simulations, where engineers created innovative airflow designs. These designs were then tested and perfected in real-world conditions using advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. The wind tunnel phase confirmed the aerodynamic body’s performance, achieving a balance of beauty, thermodynamics, and stability at high speeds. Bugatti’s focus was on maintaining interior comfort and luxury at maximum speeds. Miami HEAT announced that they have re-signed Bam Adebayo to a contract extension. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Adebayo, a three-time NBA All-Star and five-time All-Defensive Team selection, appeared in 71 games (all starts) with the HEAT last season and averaged 19.3 points, a team-high 10.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.14 steals and 34.0 minutes while shooting 52.1 percent from the field. He set single-season career highs in total rebounds, defensive rebounds, double-doubles, three-point field goals made and three-point field goal percentage while leading the team in points, rebounds, steals, blocks, field goals made, double-figure scoring games, 20-point games, double-figure rebounding games, double-doubles, triple-doubles and minutes. He scored 1,367 points, his fifth-straight 1,000-point season, tying the third-most in team history while also dishing out 278 assists, his seventh consecutive season with at least 100 assists, tying the second-longest such streak in HEAT history. Adebayo scored at least 20 points in a career-long 10-straight games from November 16 through November 28, marking the longest streak by a HEAT player since LeBron James in 2014. He posted at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in five-straight games twice, first from November 6th through the 14th and again from January 5th through the 14th, becoming the only HEAT player to accomplish the feat multiple times in the same season and just the third player in team history to ever do so in at least five-straight games, joining only LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal. Adebayo became the first player in franchise history to record at least 15 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and six blocks in a single game, accomplishing the feat on January 24 vs. Memphis. He then posted 15 points, 16 rebounds and five steals on March 24 vs. Cleveland, becoming just the second player in team history to hit at least those totals, joining only Glen Rice in 1993. He posted a 16-point, 12-rebound, 11-assist triple-double on February 13 at Milwaukee, the seventh of his career, the third-most in franchise history. He hit the game-winning buzzer-beating basket at Detroit on March 17, his second career game-winning basket with under a second to play, only Dwyane Wade (3) has more as a member of the HEAT. Adebayo anchored a defense that ranked third in points allowed per game, opponent field goals made per game and opponent offensive rebounds per game. Additionally, he has helped lead Miami to the playoffs in six of his seven seasons, including two Eastern Conference Championships and four division titles.
