Keeping the historical tradition of competitive international rivalry alive, the tenth edition of the Townsend Cup between USA (Andrew Scott, Pelon Escapite, Tommy Biddle Jr.) and England (Toby Bradshaw, Eden Ormerod, Jack Hyde) was held on Saturday, October 26, at New Bridge Polo & Country Club in Aiken, South Carolina. First played in 1923, the John R. Townsend Challenge Cup is one of the world’s most prestigious high-goal arena polo tournaments. Led by a nine-goal performance from captain Tommy Biddle Jr. and complimented by a commanding defense, the USA team galloped to its ninth John R. Townsend Challenge Cup title. “You love to represent your country. You live to do that. I’ve been very lucky to play quite a number of times for the U.S. You want to give your best effort and go out and do as best as you can do.”  – USA Team Captain Tommy Biddle Jr. Joining forces once more with previous Townsend Cup champion Escapite (2019, 2021), four-time victor Biddle Jr. (2011, 2015, 2017, 2019) elaborated on the chemistry between the two arena veterans, “Pelon is really good at being aggressive. He’s good at controlling the play and he’s a lot of fun to play with. Sometimes we don’t have to say anything to each other, we just look at each and know what’s going on.” Familiar with the talents of newcomer Scott from playing at New Bridge, Biddle Jr. continued, “Andrew’s strength is that he’s aggressive, he’s hungry, he wants to do well. It’s his first time representing the U.S. in this event, so he’s going to try and do a really good job. He’ll work hard, he’s a very good listener. He’s played a lot outdoors with Pelon and myself, so he knows what we expect of him.” Awarding the challengers one goal on handicap, a quick goal from English team captain Hyde opened the scoring for a 2-0 advantage. Responding for the red, white and blue, back-to-back goals from Scott and Escapite ended the first chukker tied 2-all. In a flurry of action during a high-scoring second period, all six players in the arena reached the scoreboard. Making a statement for the USA, Biddle Jr. made his first two-pointer of the match off a Penalty 4. England’s Hyde matched the pace on a two-point Penalty 4 of his own. Tied 7-all in the final moments of the chukker, Biddle Jr. sent a booming shot down the arena with the perfect angle and spin needed to hit the backboard of the goal and send USA into the break ahead 9-7. Competing in his sixth Townsend Cup, 55-year-old Biddle Jr. showed no signs of an aging game. Driving USA’s offense with five goals in the first half, Biddle Jr. spoke to his evolution in international events, “I just bring the experience now. I’m not as quick, I’m older. I’m the oldest guy in the whole thing. But I think the experience and having captained the team in the Townsend Cup numerous times should bring everybody together.” Kicking-off the second half with a goal from England’s Ormerod, teammate Hyde sent a Penalty 4 to the goal mouth for a narrow 10-9 edge. Quickly making up the deficit, a two-pointer from Biddle Jr. vaulted USA back into lead. Following a goal by Escapite to end the third period, USA entered the final chukker with a 13-11 lead. Displaying exceptional defense against an attacking English team, USA kept their opponents off the board and added goals from Escapite and Biddle Jr. to seal the 15-11 victory. Earning his fifth Townsend Cup title, Tommy Biddle Jr. was named Most Valuable Player. Grey mare GC Wera, played by Pelon Escapite in the second and fourth chukkers and owned by Gabriel Crespo, was awarded Best Playing Pony. Two teams were victorious at PGA National Resort & Spa’s Palmer Course after the Senior Two-Man Shoot-Out Championship. Paul LaCamera and Andrew Falcone claimed the trophy in the Championship Division, while Richard Kerper and Bill Barnes triumphed in the Super-Senior Division. Senior Division The first day of competition featured 36 holes, starting with Modified Alternate Shot followed by a Scramble. LaCamera and Falcone emerged as early leaders after Modified Alternate Shot, finishing with a score of 66 (-6). Their closest competitors, Chip Lutz and Pete Williams, finished their round with a 69 (-3). However, Stephen Slocum and Bruce Sanders made a strong statement in the second round Scramble, posting a 61 (-11) highlighted by nine birdies and one eagle to claim the top spot. By the end of the day, Brian Keenan/ Michael Kelley and Williams/ Lutz would finish tied for second at 10-under. Through 36 holes, LaCamera and Falcone were tied for seventh carding a second-round 8-under (64).  The final round of Four-Ball would be a grind until the very end. LaCamera and Falcone would see a round with two birdies to finish with a steady 2-under 70.  Brian Keenan and Michael Kelley would see a more colorful scorecard during their final round consisting of seven birdies, and four bogeys to shoot a 66– just enough to push LaCamera and Falcone into a playoff. Ultimately, it was LaCamera and Falcone who sealed the victory by making a birdie on the second playoff hole. Super-Senior Division Barnes and Kerper secured the top spot on the leaderboard after Round One, shooting a steady even-par 72, with three birdies offsetting three bogeys. Close behind were Gregory Shires and Rokki Rogan, who finished the first round with a 73 (+1), placing them in second heading into the next round. In Round Two, Jack Jackson and Doug Snoap dazzled with an impressive 59, bringing their score to 13-under. Barnes and Kerper stayed in the hunt with a strong 61 (-11) in the second round, keeping them well within striking distance of the lead.  Snoap and Jackson maintained their impressive play with a final round of 69 (-3), but it wasn't enough to overcome their Round One score of 77 (+5). 1. This one had all the makings of a classic shorthanded HEAT road victory from the jump, and it finished exactly like one, too. No Jimmy Butler after he turned his ankle Friday night in Denver, but Jaime Jaquez Jr. returned from a brief absence and Kevin Love – joining the starting lineup along with Haywood Highsmith as Nikola Jovic came off the bench – making his season debut offered reinforcements. Highsmith provided early returns on the defensive end where increased energy and a hearty helping of zone had the Minnesota Timberwolves putting miss after miss onto the scoresheet. Minnesota opened 9-4 only for the HEAT to answer 9-1, eventually leading 27-20 after the first period as those misses piled up. Even as the HEAT took a double digit early in the second, turning the Wolves over and hitting their own threes as is their winning formula against teams with as much talent as tonight’s opponent, the game felt more even than the results would have indicated. Sure enough Minnesota answered with a 14-2 run of their own, their defense cruising with cutting edge precision, stymied only by a personal 7-0 run from Tyler Herro, undeterred from getting into the paint against lengthy defenders. Miami by one at the break, their offense far more efficient when the shots went up but 11 turnovers costing them chances, with the HEAT 7-of-14 from three and the Wolves at 42 percent shooting overall. Early Minnesota timeout in the third quarter, coach Chris Finch not happy with a Love touchdown pass to Terry Rozier to put Miami back up six as they went right back to zone out of the pause. Miami went a bit cold after that but he steals kept flowing as the Wolves couldn’t stay in any sort of offensive rhythm, the misses mounting as Highsmith had his arms and legs casting shadows all over the court. Minnesota answered back with an extended, 15-0 run to take the lead as Bam Adebayo got a quick rest. Adebayo returned soon after, but the Wolves had their vibes right, Donte DiVincenzo hitting consecutive threes to go up eight. Back to zone to generate some stops, Anthony Edwards (22 points on 24 shots) struggling from outside. Wolves by three going into the fourth, Jaquez Jr. grinding away the last possession to barge through contact and finish over the top of Rudy Gobert. Zone kept buying Miami time, discombobulating even the most steadfast guard in Mike Conley, but the Wolves kept finding just a little more offense, bit by bit, up six with eight to go. Miami (14 steals overall) stayed attached, another clutch game after a Herro three in transition, neither side cleaning up their turnovers, one from Minnesota resulting in a clear-path foul helping, as did Herro (26 points on 15 shots) earning a three-shot foul in the corner to make it a one-point game. Miami still toggling in and out of zone, staying in the mix with free throws, Rozier tying the game with 30 seconds to go off another Minnesota turnover before an incredible, soaring Jaden McDaniels putback put Miami down two with nine seconds left. Somehow, Jovic sprung free from a screen at the midcourt line, Minnesota miscommunicating the switch, Jovic and-one to put Miami up one with 7.8 left. HEAT win on another Conley miss, 95-94, for their first win on the road trip. 2. The main thing you need to know about that final play is that Erik Spoelstra got Minnesota to take the bait. We’ve seen Spoelstra do this many times over the years but he doesn’t fall into the trap of using only half the court during crucial inbounds plays, even generating free layups for inbounders by overloading the backcourt. Down two, Spoelstra setup all four of his players near midcourt, giving inbounder Duncan Robinson plenty of court to work with, and you can see by the design of the play – dual backscreens, one for Jovic, one for Herro – that the idea was to get someone going downhill on the catch rather than in a static situation. Minnesota could have kept their defense between the man and the basket, letting the HEAT come to them, but by playing so tightly so far from the rim they left themselves highly vulnerable to a single miscommunication. That’s exactly what happened, Jovic finding a free running lane as Rozier screened for him and nobody executed the switch. It was as good a look as you’ll ever see a team get, down two with under 10 seconds to play, and it all happened – rather, had a chance to happen – because of the way Spoelstra moved his pieces around the board, setting the trap before the ball even left Robinson’s hands. The foul that earned the extra free-throw was just the cherry on top, Jovic (15 points on 11 shots) doing well to finish through contact. 3. Coming into this one Minnesota had only seen zone defense for 11 total possessions, and it showed. You always have to give Miami credit when the zone is stringing stops together. None of it works without everyone on a string, recovering into gaps whenever a threat presents itself. At the same time, a zone in the modern NBA is often a test of your opponent’s ability to adjust. Against a team like Denver on Friday, Nikola Jokic is the ultimate zone buster with his playmaking ability in traffic, swinging the ball side-to-side before the zone can shift. Minnesota had a much slower, more methodical approach tonight, putting players in the right places – occupying the weak side, flashing playmakers into the middle of the floor – but the lack of quick ball movement allowed Miami’s defenders to load up on the ball. Missing some decent looks at three plays a part, too Minnesota shooting just 13-of-45 from deep overall, but decent looks aren’t always going to get it done, especially when they’re one-pass, not drive-and-kick, inside-out, looks, especially when you’re turning the ball over in between all of them. Spoelstra will get the credit for that winning play design at the end, but he had already earned the game ball before that with the zone deployment. Miami has been using that coverage for years and they know better than to ride it too long, to let their opponent get used to a different look. Instead, Spoelstra managed his pitch mix perfectly, so many turnover coming from Minnesota having to adjust their approach on the fly, working with a short clock as a result. Three players claimed the first victories of the year in the Men’s Winter Series at PGA National Resort & Spa. Brian Bassett emerged as the champion in the Mid-Amateur division, Danny Turbide triumphed in the Senior division, and Kevin Macy secured the win in the Super-Senior division. Mid-Amateur Brian Bassett narrowly secured the victory in the Mid-Amateur division, finishing with rounds of 73-72 to end at 1-over. On the first day, Bassett recorded four birdies on his way to a 1-over 73, leaving him just one stroke behind the leader, Kevin Lynn, who shot an even-par round with an eagle on the second hole. Mark Allen also positioned himself in contention after the opening round, posting a 74 (+2) to sit in third place. Bassett started his final round strong, carding an eagle on the second hole. He added two more birdies and finished with an even-par round, claiming the title by a single stroke. Lynn, who had led after round one, would face adversity on day two and ultimately finish in fourth place at 8-over. Allen also posted an even-par round in the final round, despite three bogeys, securing a fourth place finish. Daniel Eggertson took third place with rounds of 74-72.  Senior In a dominant wire-to-wire performance, Danny Turbide captured the Senior Division title with a commanding 5-stroke lead. Turbide set the tone from the start, firing a 70 (-2) in the opening round, which included five birdies. Adam Armagost, who trailed closely, posted a 71 (-1) in round one. He got off to a strong start with a birdie on the first hole and added two more on the back nine to keep the pressure on Turbide. William Shufelt made a strong push on the second day, posting the lowest round of the day in the senior division with an even-par 70. His performance moved him up seven spots on the leaderboard into second place, but his opening round of 77 (+5) kept him from challenging Turbide for the lead. Turbide, meanwhile, maintained his consistency in the final round with a steady even-par 72, which included three birdies, securing his victory and a five-stroke margin of triumph. Super-Senior The Super-Senior Division was tightly contested after day one, with Jim Stone holding the lead and three players tied for second, just one stroke behind. Stone posted a steady scorecard, with his only mistake coming on the final hole, where he bogeyed the 18th. Close behind him were Kevin Macy, David Anthony, and James Woodcroft, all of whom shot even-par 72s to sit tied for second. Macy came out strong in the final round, making two birdies within his first three holes. He added three more birdies on the back nine, propelling him to a commanding lead and ultimately securing the title. Tassel, who finished second, played a bogey-free round but couldn’t catch Macy after his opening 74 (+2) left him with too much ground to make up. LVMH and WWF unite to protect the Congo Basin rainforest A new partnership has been signed between LVMH and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to preserve the Congo Basin rainforest. This tropical region, spanning six African countries, is often described as the planet’s second “green lung.” It is home to an exceptional biodiversity, representing approximately 10% of the world’s plant, bird and mammal species. The Congo Basin plays a crucial role in regulating the global climate, thanks to its capacity to store the carbon equivalent to ten years of global CO2 emissions. Under this partnership, starting in 2025 LVMH will support restoration efforts and protection of iconic species in the Congo Basin. This support will promote sustainable agroforestry practices, ensuring both environmental preservation and the economic development of local communities. LVMH has set ambitious goals to preserve five million hectares of natural habitats by 2030, and this partnership with WWF is an important step toward that target. As of 2023, over 3.1 million hectares have already been protected, thanks in part to the Group’s commitment to preserving biodiversity in the Amazon.
