This event not only celebrates the richness of Afro-Latino culture but also provides an essential platform for emerging filmmakers to tell their stories,” said Gil Robertson, President of AAFCA .  Gil Robertson, President of AAFCA “Afro-Latinos and their stories are vital to the history of both marginalized communities, and to ignore them is to ignore history,” said LEJA President and cofounder  Toni Gonzales.  “One way to not only acknowledge this fact, and more importantly to celebrate it, is through film. LEJA, by design, has one mission: to amplify the voices of our own community. We can’t think of a more appropriate or better opportunity to do this than with the Afro-Latino Short Film Competition. We take pride in our voices, and we are looking forward to making them even louder with our joint partnership.”  Toni Gonzales. Image by LEJA The event will illuminate the unique cultural experiences that define the Afro-Latino community and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of this rich and versatile heritage through film.  "AARLCC is dedicated to celebrating the rich culture of all African-descended people, including those of Hispanic origin," explained Dr. Tameka Bradley Hobbs, Regional Manager of the African American Research Library and Cultural Center. • Inside the Numbers: Dolphins Extend Season Opener Win Streak With Sanders’ Walk-off Field Goal

Facing a double-digit deficit against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Miami Dolphins secured the 20-17 victory with a strong second half from their defense, an explosive passing attack and a walk-off field goal. The Dolphins outgained the Jaguars 400-267 in total yards (105-14 in the fourth quarter). We go Inside the Numbers, presented by BDO, to take a look at the most notable team stats, individual metrics, milestones and more from Miami's Week 1 victory. Successful Season Openers With the win, the Dolphins have come out victorious in their last four season openers. This ties them with the Philadelphia Eagles for the second-longest active winning streak to start the year in the NFL, trailing just the New Orleans Saints with six-straight successful season openers. Miami previously defeated the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023 (36-34) and the New England Patriots in 2022 (20-7) and 2021 (17-16), respectively. Tua Tagovailoa, who completed 23-of-37 passes for 338 yards and a touchdown against Jacksonville, was the starting quarterback for all four of those contests. He joins Hall of Famer Dan Marino as just the second quarterback in franchise history to start and win four consecutive Week 1 games. Tagovailoa has led the NFL in passing yards after the first Sunday of the season in both the 2023 and 2024 campaigns. Miami has won six of its last eight and nine of its last 12 season openers. The Dolphins' all-time record in season openers is 33-25-1 and 39-19-1 in home openers. Miami has had 21 season-opening victories since 1993, which is tied with the Green Bay Packers for the most in the league in that span. Mike McDaniel also improved to 7-1 in the month of September as head coach of the Dolphins. His winning percentage of .875 is the second highest in the NFL since 2022. Sanders Sets Team Record Kicker Jason Sanders nailed a 52-yard field goal as time expired to secure the Dolphins victory. Not only was this Sanders' longest game-winning field goal of his career – it was the longest in Miami franchise history. Sanders has made several game-winning field goals throughout his seven seasons with the Dolphins. Notably, his walk-off field goals against the New York Jets in Week 18 of the 2022 season and against Dallas in Week 16 of the 2023 season clinched playoff berths for Miami. Sanders connected on two of his three field goal attempts against the Jaguars, all of which were in the fourth quarter. His 37-yard field goal with 4:22 left in the game capped off a 12-play, 73-yard drive that tied the score at 17 apiece. On Miami's following offensive possession, the Dolphins drove the ball 31 yards downfield on eight plays to set up Sanders' game-winning score. Hill's Historic Pace Wide receiver Tyreek Hill was a driving force in Miami's second half comeback, as he totaled seven receptions and a game-high 130 yards, including a career-best 80-yard catch-and-run touchdown on a strike from Tagovailoa that cut the Jaguars' third quarter lead to three. This was also Hill's 125th game of his career. He's among the likes of several NFL legends in statistical achievements at this 125-game mark. Hill has recorded 10,269 receiving yards (3,639 with the Dolphins), which is the sixth most receiving yards all-time among wide receivers in their first 125 games. He ranks ahead of former All-Pro wideouts and NFL Hall of Famers Marvin Harrison and Randy Moss and trails all-time receiving yards leader Jerry Rice by just 82 yards. Hill has also totaled 89 touchdowns (77 receiving, seven rushing, four on punt returns and one on kickoff returns), which ranks third all-time among wide receivers in their first 125 games, while his 77 receiving touchdowns rank eighth all-time. Hill's 130 yards are the 13th-most he's had since joining the Dolphins. Dynamic Duo Highlighted by a 63-yard third quarter reception, wide receiver Jaylen Waddle finished second on the team with 109 receiving yards on five catches. This was the first time since Week 12 of the 2023 campaign against the Jets that both Hill and Waddle have eclipsed the 100-yard mark in the same game. Since the duo formed in 2022, Hill and Waddle have topped 100 yards in the same game on seven occasions. The most receiving yards they've accounted for in a single game was against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2 of the 2022 season, where they combined for 361 yards. In this same game, which the Dolphins won 42-38, Tagovailoa threw for a career-high 469 yards and six touchdowns. Individual/Team Milestones Running back De'Von Achane scored Miami's first touchdown of the 2024 season on a one-yard run with 1:04 left in the second quarter. Achane had a busy day as a pass catcher, as his seven receptions and 76 receiving yards were both career bests. He also had 24 rushing yards on 10 attempts and has the most rushing yards of any Dolphins player ever in the first 12 games of their career. Achane ranks second all-time in rushing touchdowns among Dolphins running backs in the first 12 games of their careers. Defensive tackle Calais Campbell started the game for Miami and recorded a sack on the very first play of Jacksonville's opening possession. Embarking on his 17th NFL season, Campbell now has 106.5 career sacks. This was Campbell's 12th Week 1 win of his career, tying him for fifth most of all time. Wide receiver Grant DuBose, offensive tackle Patrick Paul, cornerback Storm Duck and linebacker Chop Robinson all made their NFL debuts. Miami recorded its first game of multiple 50-plus yard completions since Week 13 of the 2023 season at Washington. The Dolphins have had six games of multiple 50-plus yard completions under McDaniel, which is the most in the NFL since 2022. • Miami Marlins Name Jesús Luzardo Club’s Nominee for 2024 Roberto Clemente Award Presented by Capital One

The Miami Marlins and Major League Baseball announced that Marlins pitcher Jesús Luzardo has been named the club’s 2024 nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One, baseball’s most prestigious honor for Major Leaguers. The award is the annual recognition of a Major League player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. As part of the annual program, each MLB Club nominates one player to be considered for the league-wide award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character. Since joining the Marlins in 2021, Luzardo has demonstrated a deep-rooted passion for representing his hometown on the field and in the community. He is a staple of Miami Marlins Foundation events, regularly participating in Baseball Fantasy Camps for Kids, visiting children’s hospitals, and more. A graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., Luzardo hosts a free baseball clinic for local youth at his former school every year before the season begins. Earlier this year, he launched the Luzardo Family Foundation to empower and uplift children from underserved communities while helping them reach their full potential. Through his selfless actions and dedication to serving the South Florida community, Luzardo has cemented himself as a true hometown hero. Fans can vote for Luzardo in the league-wide vote at MLBTogether.com/clementeaward (in both English and Spanish). Voting will remain open until Sunday, September 29. Sunday, September 15 marked the 23rd annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente’s legacy as a humanitarian and to formally acknowledge Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award. Since the Marlins was on the road that day, the organization honored Clemente and recognized Luzardo with an on-field pre-game ceremony on Wednesday, September 18. The concept of honoring Major League players for their philanthropic work was created in 1971 as the “Commissioner’s Award.” The recognition was renamed to the “Roberto Clemente Award” in 1973 as a tribute to Clemente following his passing while delivering relief supplies for earthquake victims in Nicaragua on December 31, 1972. • One Love: Cey Adams Unveils Second ‘Lead with Love’ Mural at Kingsley Park

The  Community Foundation of Broward  in partnership with the  Business for the Arts Broward , debuted the second artwork in its “Lead with Love" mural project with a vibrant mural painted by renowned artist  Cey Adams  at Kingsley Park in Plantation.   The “Lead with Love” mural project is a transformative public art initiative in collaboration with Adams designed to spread a message of love and unity across Broward County. This ambitious project, running from Fall 2024 to 2027, aims to create nine distinctive murals, each in a different city. The project is spearheaded by a partnership between the Community Foundation of Broward and Business for the Arts Broward, with the goal of enriching and unifying the community and promoting cultural engagement.    The new artwork at Kingsley Park in Plantation marks the second of nine murals in this initiative. The first artwork in the project, the “LOVE Las Olas” mural, is located on the western exterior wall of Hoffman’s Chocolates at 601 E. Las Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale facing Tunnel Top Park.   The project seeks to foster a sense of unity and pride within each community by creating public art that reflects local identity and spirit. Each mural will serve as a cultural landmark, enhancing local character and providing a space for communal gathering and reflection. The murals are intended to be lasting symbols of love and cultural diversity, contributing to the artistic landscape of Broward County and fostering a deeper appreciation for art and community collaboration. Adams tapped into the Broward County arts community and invited select artists to join him in the mural creation process.    Adams, a New York City native and visionary artist, emerged from the downtown graffiti movement in the 80’s alongside fellow artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. He severed as the founding Creative Director at Def Jam Recordings, and along with his business partner Steve Carr, co-founded The Drawing Board, the label’s in-house design firm, where they “defined the visual culture of Hip-Hop.” The creative firm was responsible for some of the most iconic album covers, logos and advertising campaigns for Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Public Enemy, The Notorious B.I.G., DMX, Jay-Z, Usher, Mary J. Blige and many more.  Adams is celebrated for his LOVE murals that have appeared across the United States in cities like New York, Detroit and Boston.   On Sept. 9, Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Broward, along with other team members from the Community Foundation and Plantation Mayor Nick Sortal joined Adams to paint the mural at Kingsley Park.    “THANK YOU to the City of Plantation, Business for the Arts of Broward and the Community Foundation of Broward for inviting me to be a part of the revitalization of Kingsley Park. My LOVE murals are designed to encourage viewers to think and see beyond the surface. The work inspires examination and positive conversation. 'ONE LOVE PLANTATION' speaks to the vibrant and diverse community of this city and carries a universal message that resonates with everyone,” said Adams.   “We are proud to bring the second LOVE mural to Broward County at Kingsley Park in Plantation. In partnership with the Community Foundation of Broward, Business for the Arts of Broward is presenting this inspiring public art mural, featuring the powerful message of love by iconic artist Cey Adams, alongside three local artists who helped bring the artwork to life. This is yet another shining example of how business and art unite to uplift and strengthen our community,” said Jarett Levan, President and CEO of BBX Capital, CEO of IT’SUGAR and Business for the Arts of Broward Board Chair.   “The Community Foundation has been a part of this community for over 40 years, and it's our goal to inspire people to find their voice and express their love of our community,” said O’Flannery Anderson. “These murals will inspire each of us to find a way to love our own community just a little bit more.”   “We have been working diligently for the past several months to bring some ‘love’ to this park, adjoining commercial space and neighborhood, recently adding multiple improvements including new exercise equipment and shade structures, in addition to renaming it Kingsley Park in honor of one of the founding members of the Park East HOA and long-time city Activist Kingsley Smith who created this greenspace from a Former Texaco Gas Station site,” stated Glendon Hall, CRA Redevelopment Administrator. “These efforts are part of a larger holistic approach to enhance the quality of life in the area and honoring its leaders that Cey Adams immediately understood and wanted to be a part of. We are grateful to BFA, Cey and his partners for selecting Plantation to paint this historic ‘One Love, Plantation’ mural recognizing the substantial Caribbean community within the city and amplifying the universal One Love message of peace and unity.”   The “Lead with Love” Plantation mural project was supported by various sponsors including the Community Foundation of Broward, Business for the Arts Broward, Jarett & Dara Levan Fund for the Arts at the Community Foundation of Broward, Florida Power & Light, The City of Plantation, BBX Capital Fund for the Arts at the Community Foundation of Broward and Vicki Gelfund.  Visit the Community Foundation of Broward website for more information.   For more information about Business for the Arts of Broward, please visit their website . The Summit is open to the public and tickets are available at www.middleclasssummit.com . According to a recent United Way study  which considered many factors that affect the middle class, especially most recently the Covid 19 pandemic, the ALICE study argues that while the overall number of Florida households who were struggling financially increased from 2019 to 2021, the impact of competing forces played out differently across demographic groups. In many cases, the pandemic exposed and exacerbated disparities and vulnerabilities that have long existed in our society, with substantial differences in rates of hardship by race/ethnicity, age, and household composition. OIC-SFL President and CEO Newton B. Sanon  highlights the importance of these issues to all communities, commenting, “Many families are already feeling increases at the gas pumps, grocery stores, and certainly as they attempt to find affordable housing here in South Florida and around the country. The objective of our Summit is to identify actionable solutions to these challenges facing the middle class so everyone in our community has the opportunity to reach their potential. At OIC of South Florida, it’s important that we elevate the voices of the underrepresented and foster timely discussion with key stakeholders to develop and deploy solutions. The issues discussed at the Summit affect absolutely everyone.” OIC-SFL President and CEO Newton B. Sanon  This action-packed event is a convening of thought leaders brought together to define and create an eco-system that can develop innovative solutions to issues like the disparities in education, affordable housing, rising costs of childcare and healthcare, criminal justice reform and unsustainable increases in the everyday costs of basic necessities facing America’s middle class.  The Summit features an impressive lineup of industry experts and community voices of whom the is Summit intended to positively impact.  Highlights include  Chairman Marcellus W.
