- Les Cabinotiers Le Temps Divin Greek Mythology, Chronometry and Engraving
The Les Cabinotiers Le Temps Divin (divine time) series explore the notion of time in its various cultural and conceptual perceptions: physical and linear like a chronology; astronomical and cyclical like the seasons; metaphysical in the infinite stretching of the present moment. For each of these interpretations, Vacheron Constantin offers a journey towards different cultural horizons, a horological odyssey punctuated by the mechanics of time and staged by artistic crafts. The deity Chronos from Greek mythology has been chosen to embody organised and measurable physical and linear time. The latter takes the form of two editions equipped with Calibre 1990, featuring a bi-axial armillary tourbillon regulator system with retrograde hours and minutes indication. Time embodied by the god Chronos Le Temps Divin (divine time), a theme devoted to the myths and cultural perceptions of time, takes a documented approach brought to life by Vacheron Constantin's watchmakers and artisans. The physical notion of time – a linear, measurable concept – is represented by the "features" of the Greek god Chronos – Saturn in Roman mythology – father of the Horae (Hours), goddesses who personified the division of time. The Maison is no stranger to such evocations of ancient myths from Greco-Roman tradition. As showcased in numerous heritage pieces dating from the early 20th century, the depiction of figures from the pantheon or scenes from Hellenic daily life have often inspired Vacheron Constantin's artisans, as have the most distinctive monuments and decorative elements of these two civilisations, such as the Colosseum in Rome. The Calibre 1990 The timepieces evoking the god Chronos are equipped with Calibre 1990, whose black or blue colour – depending on the version – respectively results from NAC or PVD treatment. Protected by four patents, this movement has benefited from the technical developments made on the Les Cabinotiers Reference 57260, the most complex timepiece in the world when it was presented in 2015 with its 57 complications. A manual-winding movement with a 60-hour power reserve, Calibre 1990 features an instantaneous bi-retrograde display of time indications and a bi-axial armillary tourbillon with spherical balance-spring. The time can be read on the right-hand side thanks to a retrograde display with grade 5 titanium hands on a semi-circular track punctuated by Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes. Confined to a wide flange, this track reveals part of the movement, reinforcing the technical aspect of the timepiece already accentuated by the majestic construction of the regulator. The configuration of Calibre 1990 leaves ample space on the left-hand part of the dial, occupied only by the bi-axial armillary tourbillon positioned at 9 o'clock beneath a bubble formed by the sapphire crystal. The distinctive feature of this regulator – operating at a rate of 18,000 vibrations per hour and bearing the small seconds hand – is its dual-axis construction with two interlocking aluminium carriages, each rotating at a speed of 60 seconds. At the heart of the tourbillon is a spherical balance-spring with no terminal curve, whose perfectly concentric beating ensures greater isochronism and therefore enhanced precision, in addition to the beneficial effect of the regulator's rotation that neutralises the effects of Earth's gravity. Each of these two technical developments has its own historical reference. This particular type of tourbillon owes its name to Antide Janvier – astronomer and watchmaker to King Louis XVI – one of whose greatest masterpieces was a moving sphere with a planetary wheel known as an armillary. The cylindrical balance-spring dates to Jacques-Frédéric Houriet's invention in 1814 and is coupled here with an escapement featuring an escape-wheel and pallet-lever in silicon with diamond-polished pallets: materials featuring a very low friction coefficient and requiring no lubrication. The technical innovations of Calibre 1990 are protected by four patents: The instantaneous retrograde system controlled by a single minutes cam that perfectly synchronises the jump of the two hands at midnight or noon. The escapement collet, a component securing the inner end of the balance-spring, is made of titanium. This material matches that of the regulating organ, resulting in improved regulatory performance. The architecture of the tourbillon carriage rotates every 15 seconds to form the Vacheron Constantin’s Maltese cross emblem. The silicon pallet-lever with its diamond-polished pallets offers greater resistance to wear and friction. Masterpieces of engraving and guilloché work Les Cabinotiers armillary tourbillon – Ode to Chronos All the surfaces of the case components are decorated by the engraver. Geometrical motifs inspired by Greek friezes adorn the bezel, the case middle on the winding-crown side, the lugs and their sides, the interhorn space and the folding clasp. These are etched using the taille de joue intaglio technique used for ornamental engraving that involves working the material by tilting the chisel to achieve incisions of different sizes with depth effects through the brilliance of light. This process is particularly well-suited to small surfaces with grooves of no more than 0.2 mm, which are further enhanced by surface finishing using various polishing techniques. For the engraver, the difficulty lies in the regularity of touch when it comes to creating perfectly geometrical motifs, especially when their dimensions have to be adapted to irregular surfaces, such as the watch lugs. This accurate craftsmanship is complemented by a bas-relief depiction of the god himself holding the hourglass of time in his hand. This realistic micro-sculpture adorning the case middle at 9 o'clock is modelled in relief by removing the material to a depth of 0.5 mm for the sky and clouds in the background and 1 mm for the divine figure and its two wings. Delicately chiselled with burins of different sizes, the volumes are further refined with drypoint to bring out every detail, before the surfaces are polished and sandblasted to highlight the contrasts. In all, the engraving on this piece took more than 290 hours of craftsmanship, complemented by the hand- guilloché Clous de Paris hobnail pattern on the movement mainplate and bridges. The caseback bears Ovid's famous injunction: "Carpe Diem". Les Cabinotiers armillary tourbillon – Tribute to infinite time The white gold model is inspired by the famous dome of the Pantheon in Rome. The sides of the case were entrusted to the expert hands of the engraver, who has picked up the geometrical motifs of the dome with its radiant perspective. To achieve the effect of pyramidal depth on a flat surface, the engraver uses the taille de joue method, changing the angle of the chisel to gradually narrow the furrows between the squares of the motif. This optical illusion is a real challenge, as it has to adapt to the changing shape of the case middle that tapers towards the lugs. Some 120 hours of work are needed to achieve this result. The Master guillocheur was also involved in embellishing the calibre. As a reminder of the ornamentation on the case, an original geometrical motif was devised, extending over the movement mainplate and bridges. In addition to the difficulty of creating an angular geometric motif on rounded bases, the artisan has created seamless, harmonious and continuous decoration, despite the cut-out of the three bridges on the back of the movement. - Marguerite Humeau: \*sk\*/ey-
ICA Miami presents “\*sk\*/ey-,” a major solo exhibition for artist Marguerite Humeau (b. 1986, France; lives in London) comprising newly commissioned sculptures and video. The immersive installation marks Humeau’s first large-scale institutional presentation in the United States and sees the artist experiment with form through the abstract narratives of alternative worlds. Informed by the menace of climate change, these new sculptures pollinate, blossom, and armor, proposing a potentially inevitable mode of living, a post-human existence in which nomadic beings live in the air and are in perpetual motion. Installation view: "Marguerite Humeau: sk/ey-" at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, Dec 3, 2024 – Mar 30, 2025. Photo: Oriol Tarridas. Humeau’s laboratory-like methods radically test materiality and temporality in order to explore the mysteries of human existence, ranging from prehistories to speculative notions of the future. Meticulously researched and often developed in collaboration with experts ranging from anthropologists and paleontologists to foragers and clairvoyants, Humeau’s multidisciplinary practice involves both knowledge production and the creation of new mythologies. “I am extracting the essences of real events, and then expanding into ‘what if?’ scenarios,” says Humeau. “I am prototyping worlds that are invisible, extinct, or parallel to ours.” The artist draws inspiration from long-lost ideas and extinct life forms, and uses speculation, research, and methodology to fill in the chasms in each field of knowledge. The exhibition takes its title from the antiquated, proto-Indo-European term for shedding or splitting, “sk-ey,” alluding to a mysterious mutation of the Earth. Humeau creates a world gripped by metamorphosis, in which soil is peeling off the Earth and transmuting into flying nomadic beings. The exhibition opens with a newly commissioned video that relays the cosmology of a human-made eternal sun, a great migration, and the transformation of earthbound life forms into rootless, nomadic inhabitants of the sky. The video’s soundtrack echoes a transforming landscape through evocative melodies that at times break into visceral, rhythmic noises. In a major new installation, Humeau evokes a desert landscape. The artist cites art historian Petra Lange-Berndt’s statement “the soil is full of decomposed bodies” as a starting point for the three sculptures that appear to emerge from the ground in the center of the space. Wrought from organic materials like 150-year-old carved walnut, cast rubber, handblown glass, and semi-translucent embellished silk, their surfaces are reminiscent of both mold and flesh and appear to rise up like extrusions of the soil. Another group of sculptures perched throughout the space appear to have torn themselves from the ground. With contours reminiscent of matriarchal statues, these works seem to have transformed themselves from plant materials to winged feather-like figures. The materials constituting these works—blown glass and semi-translucent silk, waxed felt, and raw wool—have undergone meticulous processes of dying, dipping, casting, and rusting to create elaborate embellishments evoking mold, caked mud, melting bark, fire, and golden sunlight. As closed systems, these nomadic beings “house” themselves self-sufficiently. They populate the exhibition space, perched high on the walls, as if they could take flight at any moment. Marguerite Humeau (b. 1986 in Cholet, France; lives in London) has had solo exhibitions at Lafayette Anticipations, Paris (2021); Kunstverein Hamburg, Germany (2019); Museion, Bolzano, Italy (2019); New Museum, New York (2018); and Tate Britain, London (2017), among others. The artist’s work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including the 15th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2024); 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia curated by Cecilia Alemani (2022); Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland (2021); Istanbul Biennial (2019); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2019); and the High Line, New York (2017). In 2023, Humeau inaugurated a 160-acre earthwork, Orisons , in the San Luis Valley, Colorado, curated and produced by Black Cube Nomadic Art Museum. By ML Staff. - The Florida BrainLink Initiative Celebrates Its Opening With an Intimate Launch Party
On the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 10, the Florida BrainLink Initiative (FBLI) celebrated the opening of its practice with an intimate launch party, bringing together leading physicians, family, and supporters. Dr. Lloyd Zucker, MD, FAANS, neurosurgical consultant for FBLI, unveiled more information about the initiative's pioneering, non-invasive treatment for post-stroke patients, setting a new standard for stroke rehabilitation. With its office in Delray Beach, Florida, located at 4675 Linton Blvd., Suite 105, FBLI was created to positively impact patients challenged with stroke recovery. It is all too common to hear that “a plateau has been reached” or that “one needs to be satisfied with the progress that they have made.” The FBLI neurosurgeons are pioneers in this first-ever protocol that combines cutting-edge technology in brain imaging with an established therapy known as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). This is used to target and treat precise areas of the brain that are affected by damage caused by stroke. Utilizing state-of-the-art brain mapping technology, the neurosurgeons are able to pinpoint individual pathways within the brain that are damaged. They then can repair and enhance function through the application of TMS, a proven treatment method currently utilized for depression. Unlike traditional TMS treatments, FBLI and its neurosurgeons are uniquely qualified to navigate and target specific pathways within the brain that have not been accessible for treatment. This approach offers new hope for post-stroke patients who have plateaued in their recovery and failed traditional methods of treatment and therapies. “We set out to utilize existing treatments in a new and innovative way. This is an off-label application of an established, FDA-approved technology,” said Lloyd Zucker, MD, FAANS, neurosurgical consultant of the Florida BrainLink Initiative. “By partnering with leaders in the application of artificial intelligence and connectomics, the sciences behind this technology, we are applying this and unique protocols to access parts of the brain that were never possible to access before.” For more information about FBLI, patients may call 877.589.7020 or visit the website at flbrainlink.com About The Florida BrainLink Initiative: The Florida BrainLink Initiative (FBLI) was created to have a positive impact on patients challenged with stroke recovery. The FBLI Neurosurgeons have pioneered the first-ever protocol that combines cutting-edge technology and clinical precision with an established therapy that is non-invasive and effective. We pride ourselves on supporting local galleries and representing excellence from the art world, and this inaugural collaboration with Eternity Gallery will enhance the aesthetic experience at the Continuum for our homeowners throughout the winter season.” The eleven chosen artists featured in the exhibit by Eternity Gallery at the Continuum include: Jonathan Seliger, Valay Shende, Hong-yi Zhuang, Katrin Fridriks, Ellen Von Unwerth, Michael Moebius, Min-Jun Yue, Gil Bruvel, Joe Black, Ignacio Gana and William Barbosa. Untitled, 2023 Red & Blue, Serie Banda Continua by William Barbosa The seven featured indoor and outdoor sculptures by William Barbosa fall in the modern historic tradition of Abstract- Geometric and Kinetic aesthetic. His personal and original creative style is related to other avant-garde movements of similar expressive characteristics, such as Concrete Art, Expansionism and MADI International. The means used by Barbosa in creating his sculptures are metal, color and special tools. Metallic plates of various sizes and thickness, which may be of iron, stainless steel and more recently aluminum, are cut or bent into geometric folds that will be subsequently welded to achieve the visual shape that the artist’s creativity seeks to attain. The sculpture is then prepared and the colors selected to start the polychrome process. Painting the sculptures to achieve an impeccable finish that will allow them to be placed outdoors requires a special technique. Pop artist and photographer Michael Moebius came into the world in 1968, in the city of Pirna, Germany. Having developed a love for art at an early age, cartooning became his first passion. While a formal education was pursued, Michael chose a career in engineering and construction, then decided that figurative art would be his life’s work. He started studying painting at the academy of arts in Dresden, and in 1998 he got a big breakthrough. It was at this time, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, that Michael was able to make his way to the United States. His talent as a painter and photographer was readily apparent, and he quickly became a sought-after favorite of collectors. Michael has already been part of major exhibitions throughout the US. His collector base and publishers include Playboy, Procter & Gamble, Laura Biagiotti, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Robb Report and other well-known companies. Aladdin Sane Bubblegum (Bowie) by Michael Moebius Mixed media artist Gil Bruvel is a visionary creator, capable of translating complex ideas and fleeting impressions into stunning works of art. His curiosity about the human condition and the workings of the human mind is honed through daily meditative practice. His art emerges from a deep contemplation of images, emotions, and sensations, which he refines continually before he casts them into material form. While elements of surrealism have been present in his works throughout his career, Bruvel’s later efforts play with the distortion of realities, duality, and multiple perspectives. In his Cubist series , he reduces human form to component planes and geometric shapes, using negative space to create positive form, and vice versa. He seeks to reinforce the notion of fluidity by expressing multiple viewpoints simultaneously. Blind, 2019 by Gil Bruvel “We were fortunate to have the presence of William Barbosa for a meet-and-greet with the residents at the property during Miami Art Week,” says Jacqueline Gonzalez, Lifestyle Director at the Continuum. “He gave everyone a fascinating presentation on how he transforms metal in to his beautiful sculptures that have formed architectural centerpieces throughout our grounds and common areas.” The private exhibit presented in partnership with Eternity Gallery is shown at the Continuum in Miami Beach from December 2024 through April 2025.
