  • Orange County’s Tina McCall-Waters Named Usta Florida Tennis Volunteer of the Month

Tina McCall-Waters, USTA Florida’s Volunteer of the Month for September, has spent the last 20 years making an enduring impact on the Eatonville community through tennis.  As a volunteer, she has dedicated her time and energy to teaching children the sport, helping them build skills that extend far beyond the court. Her efforts have touched the lives of hundreds of kids.  This past summer, Tina made a significant contribution by coaching around 200 kids through the Denton Johnson Tennis Program. This program is a collaboration of three key organizations within Eatonville: The Boys & Girls Club of Eatonville, LaShunda Tots, and EsteemLearning. Tina’s leadership and dedication have helped these children develop their tennis abilities and, more importantly, their confidence and sense of community.  Tina’s love for tennis started early and at the age of 10, she won her first junior tournament at the Orlando Tennis Center, which really helped shaped her future in the sport. Since then, she has gone on to have a remarkable career. She was the first Black female to receive an athletic scholarship at Indiana University and was one of the pioneers that built Indiana Women’s Tennis into an amazing program. She was a two-time First-Team All-American and a three-time First-Team All-Big Ten and led the team to three Big Ten Championships. She was inducted into Indiana University’s Hall of Fame for tennis in 2023.  Tina’s accomplishments extend far off the courts. She recently published her first book, Give Back and Laugh Out Loud, which reflects her personal philosophy of giving back and finding joy in the process. When she’s not on the court, she can be found coaching Special Olympics at Magnolia School, another example of her unwavering commitment to service.  Reflecting on her more than 20 years of volunteering, Tina loves to put smiles on other people’s faces. “I love giving back and I’m able to help someone else learn the game of tennis and have the window of opportunities open for them,” she said.  Tina’s story is one of service, passion, and giving back. Through tennis, she has opened doors for many young athletes in Eatonville, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.  USTA Florida congratulates Tina McCall-Waters and thanks her for spending countless hours helping children learn the game of tennis. Eatonville is lucky to have her and Tina has deserved the honor of USTA Florida September Volunteer of the month.  Interested in volunteering in tennis? • How Virtual Worlds Are Becoming the New Hangout Spots

Over the past few years, we've heard a lot about how our lives will be lived out in the metaverse and other virtual realities. While these predictions haven't yet come to pass, the truth is that most of us spend a lot of time interacting with people virtually and connecting to digital platforms for entertainment. While these aren't virtual worlds in the metaverse sense, they give us a glimpse of what this entirely virtual future might hold. If you've spent time on platforms like VRChat or played games like Fortnite, you've been part of the emerging virtual world.   These platforms go beyond traditional social media  and gaming, immersing participants in a world of real-time communication, shared experiences, and interactive elements. Many people spend more time in these virtual hangout spots than physical ones in the real world. After all, these virtual spaces offer everything from entertainment to social interactions, allowing people to hang out without leaving the comfort of their homes. In this article, we take a look at how virtual worlds are changing the way we socialize.  The Rise of Virtual Hangout Spaces Hanging out virtually has become a pastime of many who want a social experience that traditional gaming and social media don't offer. Platforms like Fortnite, VRChat, and Second Life have taken on a life of their own, becoming social hubs in addition to places where people gather to play games. If you've spent any time playing Fortnite, you're probably familiar with the virtual concerts the platform hosts featuring major artists. These events draw millions of attendees who can interact with each other just like they would at a concert in a physical venue.  As one of the most popular card games in the world, a game of poker has always been a social occasion. Before the internet, if someone wanted to play poker, they'd organize a game night with friends, go to a poker room, or travel to a casino. Online casinos have changed all of that, making it possible for people to learn how to play poker  and practice the skills they've learned with people from all over the world. While there are some differences between online poker and traditional poker, the virtual poker world has become a hangout for those who want to enjoy this game on the go or from the comfort of their living rooms.  Another virtual hangout that has gained a following in recent years is VRChat, where users can create and explore user-generated worlds, socialize, attend events, or just hang out with friends. Many look to Second Life  as the original metaverse, and it is one of the first virtual social platforms. In Second Life, visitors can hold meetings, explore virtual marketplaces, and attend social gatherings. All of these hang-out spots are an example of how platforms are shifting from being only about gaming experiences and becoming fully-fledged social hubs where interacting with others is just as important as gameplay.   The Role of Technology in Enhancing Virtual Socialization As with everything online, technology has driven many of the changes we've seen in the past few years. With the price of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) devices falling, more and more people have the tools needed to explore these virtual worlds in ways that weren't possible before. AR and VR make everything more realistic and offer a degree of realism that's not possible just by looking at a computer or smartphone screen. High-speed internet, AI integration, and innovations in 3D environments have also played a big role in making these virtual spaces feel more tangible. While the metaverse is no longer dominating headlines, major tech companies are still exploring ways to use it in daily life. All of these changes have made it so that people are excited to spend time in these virtual hangouts, which are quickly becoming an important part of how the world socializes. In a few years, we might find that people are doing the majority of their socializing online instead of in-person. Until then, we'll have to wait to see how that turns out.  By ML staff. • Hanging Art Salon Style: Everything You Need to Know

Much like collecting, there are no hard rules for arranging and hanging art — but there are some guiding factors , particularly when it comes to a salon-style hang. Popular for centuries to showcase one’s treasured works en masse, this maximalist approach can provide a dramatic focal point in any interior. While the process of selecting which works to hang beside one another is often an exercise in intuition, there are several tips for producing thoughtful eye-catching juxtapositions and ensuring the wall looks balanced and dynamic. A selection of works offered in American Atmosphere: An Important Private Collection on 27 September-18 October 2024 at Christie’s Online Having established his award-winning firm more than 25 years ago, Los Angeles-based interior designer Timothy Corrigan has mastered the art of the salon-style hang. As a self-proclaimed ‘inveterate collector,’ his personal experience acquiring art for his numerous homes, which have consistently included historic French chateaux, (as illustrated in his latest book, At Home in France: Inspiration and Style in Town and Country ) have equipped him with the ultimate eye and instinct. Here, he shares his finest advice, from creating the ideal mix of art to selecting the right frame. When did salon-style hangs begin? During the late 17th century, salons rose to popularity as a means for cultural patrons and society to gather and view art. The Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture held salons (originally annually) in Paris where recent graduates of the École des Beaux-Arts could showcase their work. To present as much art as possible with limited wall space, paintings were hung from floor to ceiling and in close proximity to one another. An engraving by Pietro Antonio Martini depicts the floor-to-ceiling hang at the Salon of 1787 which took place at the Palais du Louvre This inspired alternative salons across France and Europe, and eventually America by the mid-1800s, when many of the nation’s first art museums and schools were founded. With more opportunities for public exhibition, ‘salon-style displays became the standard due to their efficient use of space, aligning perfectly with the Victorian era’s “more-is-more” aesthetic,’ says Corrigan. Decided by the curators, placement was especially key. ‘Certain locations were clearly more desirable than others. In this hierarchical arrangement, the most important paintings were hung at eye level, or “on the line,” while lesser-known artists’ works were positioned higher, or “skied,”’ says Corrigan, noting that artists often employed impressive frames to stand out. What are some best practices for placing and spacing my art? Many people find it helpful to make paper cutouts in the exact dimensions of the work they’d like to hang. These cutouts are ideal for playing with wall placement to more easily achieve the desired arrangement. Similarly the artworks themselves can be laid out on a floor that is roughly equivalent to the size of the wall prior to hanging. This is Corrigan’s preferred method to not only get a sense of scale and proportion, but also to ‘account for the individual nuances and strengths of one piece next to another.’ He also suggests starting with the largest artworks first as the ‘anchors’ for the wall and then smaller works can be added around them. If organically placing artworks proves challenging, even spacing can ensure that the hang feels balanced. A selection of works offered in American Atmosphere: An Important Private Collection on 27 September-18 October 2024 at Christie’s Online If organically placing artworks proves challenging, a classic guideline is to adhere to a grid, ensuring even spacing between works. This helps ensure that all the works feel connected.    Ultimately it’s important to remember that hanging artworks salon style offers more flexibility than one may think, so there’s no need to overly fixate on the perfect arrangement. ‘The great thing about this style of displaying art is that it can always evolve and change,’ says Corrigan. ‘When I find a new piece that I like better than an existing one, I sometimes swap it out, and it’s fun to see how much it can change the overall effect.’  What’s most important to consider when it comes to frames? Since the frame of a painting that’s hung salon-style doesn't have the same impact as it would hanging alone, frame selection generally offers more flexibility. ‘It’s always nice to have an interesting mix of frames to prevent the collection from looking like it was all assembled at the same time,’ says Corrigan. Frames in similar golden hues naturally complement one another. A selection of works offered in American Atmosphere: An Important Private Collection on 27 September-18 October 2024 at Christie’s Online Sticking to frames in similar hues and thicknesses can help keep the focus on the art and convey a sense of intentionality. For heavier, ornate frames, consider spacing pictures with more breathing room between one another. Should I incorporate other types of media and objects? ‘Mixing media is great because you actually appreciate the individual works more by comparison to something that is very different and hanging adjacent to it,’ says Corrigan. While flat works can be treated similarly on the wall, sprinkling in sculptures, mementos and other three-dimensional objects, from plates to garments and accessories, is a sure way to add interest. There’s no reason a wall cannot become a veritable cabinet of curiosities. A salon-style hang can provide a dramatic focal point in any interior. The maximalist approach has been a popular way to showcase works en masse for centuries. A selection of works offered in American Atmosphere: An Important Private Collection on 27 September-18 October 2024 at Christie’s Online. Furniture and decorative objects offered in Collections: Including Property from Three Northeast Collectors, Glenn C. Randall, Dr. Jeffrey Lant, and Peter Van Slyke on 9-22 October 2024 at Christie’s Online How do I ensure my salon-style wall achieves the right mix? Volume is key to salon-style hanging; you can’t pull it off with only a few pieces. You almost need to think of it as creating a kind of wallpaper with the art,’ says Corrigan. Salon-style hangs naturally lend themselves to collectors who gravitate towards specific themes. In Corrigan’s portrait gallery, paintings by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and John Singer Sargent hang alongside photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe . Sitters range from 18th-century royalty to the designer’s own family members and even animals. ‘Because they are all tied together by being portraits, you can have a lot of fun playfully mixing media, sizes and periods.’ Beyond themed subject matter, grouping works of a similar colour palette or from a specific artistic movement is a fail-proof way to create a salon-style wall. At Timothy Corrigan’s chateau in the French countryside, the grand staircase showcases portraits in a playful mix of media, sizes and periods. Photographs by Xavier Béjot ML Staff. • Four Claim Men's Net Victories

Despite Hurricane Helene coming through earlier in the week, Lakewood National was in fantastic shape for the weekend, and proved to be a tough test. Saturday brought gusty winds and periodic rain showers, so the course only yielded six scores of Even Par or better in round one. Luckily, we saw some more favorable conditions on Sunday, allowing players to give it their best effort to win a Net Championship Title. Under 50 Division It was jubmled at the top of the leaderboard after round one, as five players sat within two shots off the lead. Up at the top was Clinton Larrabee who came in with a score of 72 (E). Larrabee's round was highlighted by four net birdies and one net eagle on hole number six. On the prowl and only one shot back was Mitchel Perez, Desmond Figgins, and John Walters who all fired an opening round of 73 (+1). Rounding out the Top 5 was Eric Stupski, who shot 73 (+2). The final round saw a shift at the top of the leaderboard with three under-par scores. Devon Peaslee, of Saint Petersburg, started the second round strong with three net birdies and a net eagle on the front-nine. A round of 69 on Sunday moved Peaslee into first place with a final score of 145 (+1). Two-strokes behind, tied for second place, finished Florian Rodegra and defending champion, William Gariepy. Rodegra, of Winter Garden, posted a final round 68, 10 strokes lower than round one, to move into second place while Gariepy posted a two-under 70 to tie Rodegra at 146 (+2). 50-59 Division Jorge Garrido was one of the few that was able to string together an under-par round round on Saturday, as he set the tone with a 71 (-1). Despite a costly double bogey on hole number five, his net birdies on Holes 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, & 13 were enough to spring him into the lead heading to the final round. Net Two-Man Shoot-Out Champion, Michael Mendoza, was sitting just three shots back along with Stephen Cheatham. Garrido played steady golf in round two to claim a wire-to-wire win at even-par. The Wellington resident posted five net birdies in the final round to secure his seven-stroke victory. Mendoza, of North Miami, captured second place by one-stroke over Brian Soldano. Soldano, of Land O’ Lakes, advanced up the leaderboard three spots with a final round 74 to finish third.  60-69 Division The 60-69 division saw the best scores across the board, as three players were able to come in even par or better. Tony Vertuca was leading the way after round one with an impressive score of 71 (-1). Vertuca's round was highlighted by the net eagle on the difficult Par 5 - second hole, and was also able to string together four more birdies. James Ehr & Steven Mummaw were looking up at the leaderboard, but only one shot behind after shooting scores of 72 (E). Round two finished with a tie at the top as Dan Perez and Graham Tomlinson both posted rounds of 73-72 to finish one over-par. Perez, of Riverview, started his final round the exact same as round one with two back-to-back birdies to climb three spots up the leaderboard.
