  • Zhou and Elwin Outlast Exempt-Only Field

It was a beautiful weekend at Santa Lucia River Club and many players took advantage of the great scoring conditions. With a field exclusively for players having earned FJT exemptions, the competition was fierce. At the end of the weekend, Darren Zhou and Krishny Elwin would stand above the rest.  Boys (16-18) In Round One, two players from the IMG Academy saw themselves get off to a hot start and make their way to the top of the leaderboard. Xin Wang and Darren Zhou each got to 3-under par through four holes in the opening round and set the mark to chase. Another FJT Champion, Eric Zhao would see them at the top and make a charge on the back nine. In total, Eric would make four birdies on the day and post 3-under 69. Darren Zhou after a hot start played consistent golf throughout his opening round to take the Round 1 lead at 4-under 68. Eric Zhao would make the first move in the final round with a birdie on the par-3 3rd hole. A wedge shot on the 5th to tap-in range saw the Team Canada member take the lead. Playing in front of the final group, James Nagle would make three birdies in his first 12 holes to get within just one shot of the lead. As the final group made the turn, Darren Zhou took control of the event. An eagle on the par-5 10th followed by birdies on two of his next three holes put him in a spot where no one was going to catch him. A final round 69 put Zhou at 7-under for the weekend and a seven shot victory. Eric Zhao would finish in solo second at even par while Gabriel Hull would jump 12 spots up the leaderboard to share third place with James Nagle. Girls (16-18) With a plethora of FJT Champions in the field and ideal scoring conditions, birdies were plenty in Round One. Krishny Elwin and Hannah Hall would surge to the top of the leaderboard early, each getting to 2-under within their first six holes. The duo would make seven birdies each throughout the day with Hannah Hall posting 3-under and Krishny Elwin leading the way at 6-under 66, her lowest score to date on the Florida Junior Tour. With the winds increasing in the final round, the duo wouldn’t see quite as many birdies as in Round One. Hannah Hall would make nine straight pars to begin her day before making her first birdie of the day on the par-4 1st hole. Elwin added a birdie on the 13th hole to stretch the lead to four shots, but bogeys on 15, 16, and 17, would see her lead shrink to one shot at the turn. Hall would birdie the 1st hole to tie the lead with just eight holes to go. However, a bogey on the par-3 3rd hole coupled with a birdie from Elwin on the 7th hole would give Krishny Elwin a lead she wouldn’t relinquish. At 5-under for the weekend, Krishny Elwin earns her second FJT win of the season after a victory in September. Angelina Pacheco’s back-nine 3-under 33 saw her vault up into solo second, while Hannah Hall and Evyn Cannon would share third place. By ML Staff. Content/image courtesy of FSGA

  • The TGL Golf League Might Signal That Indoor Sport is the Future, for Better or Worse

The inaugural season of the TGL golf league closes this week with a final championship-deciding series . The upstart, team-based, men’s league has made headlines for its celebrity backers, including star golfers Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy . Fans watch play during a TGL match between Jupiter Links Golf Club and Boston Common Golf, Jan. 27, 2025, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. TGL features six teams of four players competing against each other in a tech-infused arena the size of a football field. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell) Even more noteworthy is TGL’s unique format . Events are played inside SoFi Center, a custom-built venue in Florida with an audience capacity of 1,500. At one end lies the “ ScreenZone ,” where a golf simulator is used for longer shots such as drives and iron play. At the other end, players chip and putt along the physical surface of the “ GreenZone ” to record a final score on each hole. TGL is the latest commercial venture to shake up the golf world in recent years. The league is no doubt novel in some ways, yet it can also be explained as the convergence of two longstanding trends: the “mediatization” and “indoorization” of sport. A ‘mediatized’ sports landscape Mediatization is a concept that speaks to relationships of interdependence between media and other institutions, such as sport. More than simply conveying sport content, communication technologies have helped change sport over the years — consider “television timeouts” or the use of instant replay. In return, sport is a source of live, unpredictable and exciting media content, something that is highly valuable in a competitive attention economy . In this context, TGL stands out as an especially tech-infused venture . Tiger Woods of Jupiter Links Golf Club watches a shot during a TGL match against Boston Common Golf in January 2025 in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell) First, there is the golf simulator. The ScreenZone is so named because players hit into a massive screen measuring 64 by 53 feet. Tracking technology is used to map and represent the flight of the ball on screen. This allows for a thoroughly datafied sport experience as an array of performance metrics are available to both players and fans. Also relevant are TGL’s seemingly made-for-TV conventions , some of which might be anathema to golf traditionalists. Among them, a 40-second shot clock keeps a brisk pace of play. Players are also mic’d up, making strategy conversations and reactions accessible to the audience. In all, TGL is a media spectacle. It is not uncommon for sports leagues to adopt new rules and formats , seemingly in a bid to capture consumer attention. But, through TGL’s video game-like components, media representation — golf on a simulated volcano, among other places — becomes part of the sport competition itself. Sport moves indoors TGL is also an indoor spectacle. In this sense, it contributes to the indoorization of outdoor sports. Outdoor sports from surfing to skiing, rock climbing and many more have moved indoors in recent years (while remaining outdoor sports too). A potential trade-off is that, while outdoor sports often foreground adventure, uncertainty and danger, their indoor analogues often trade this for control, predictability and calculability. The authenticity of indoor sport might therefore be debated, especially in historically counter-cultural sports such as surfing. Yet indoorization can also lead to expansion. From the late 1800s onwards, artificial ice in North American arenas allowed for reliable skating conditions and helped hockey move to new locations, growing the game as a commercial endeavour and cultural institution. There was also the benefit of escaping the elements. As architectural historian Howard Shubert writes : “Covered rinks allowed patrons to escape winter’s cold temperatures, harsh winds, and blowing snow and eliminated the immediate danger of falling through thin ice on ponds and streams.” Indoorization is not new, even for golf: golf simulators can be found in converted garages; Topgolf facilities offer high-tech, all-weather golf experiences. But TGL is a high-profile entrant in a history of moving sport indoors. Rickie Fowler of New York Golf Club tees off on the first hole during the inaugural TGL match against The Bay Golf Club in January 2025, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell) Indoorization as adaption? Researchers assessing the prospects for outdoor skating against recent climate projections have concluded the future looks bleak for outdoor rinks, and that indoor arenas and synthetic surfaces will grow more important in the years ahead. Put another way, indoorization may increasingly be a requirement, and not just a luxury, in the context of a worsening climate crisis. Likewise, sport mega-events have implemented various climate adaptation measures over time, from snow-making on ski slopes to refrigeration of sliding tracks and far beyond. The future is likely to see host cities become climate unreliable to an even greater extent. It’s not just winter sports. From air-conditioned stadiums to relocated events in search of cooler conditions to indoor recess for students escaping poor-quality outdoor air, the changing climate is a point of vulnerability year-round — and for sport and physical activity participation at various levels. Our point here is not that TGL was conceived with the climate crisis in mind. Nor do we expect outdoor golf to disappear. Rather, the climate crisis will demand adaptation in sport in the years ahead. In a time of technological innovation — augmented reality, artificial intelligence and more — the mediatization of sport will provide new commercial and recreational opportunities that offer escape from, and perhaps distraction from, worsening outdoor conditions. TGL’s blend of real and artificial elements can be seen as foreshadowing “solutions” to much greater problems that are beginning to seem inevitable. By ML Staff. • Fast Facts: Pharaoh Brown

The Dolphins agreed to terms with free agent tight end Pharaoh Brown, adding another valuable blocking option to the offense. Brown has played most of his career as an attached Y tight end – aligning next to the offensive tackle – with a highlight reel full of exceptional blocks. He's added 751 receiving yards and three touchdowns over the course of a seven-year career. Punishing blocker If you didn't know any better based on the gameday program and his jersey number, it would be easy to confuse Pharoah Brown for an offensive lineman when he's called upon to block. He's a knockback candidate on every run-down rep with well-crafted technique and power at the point of attack, but his pass protection reel is equally impressive. Last season alone, Brown scored pass protection wins against the likes of Tyquann Lewis, Azeez Ojulari, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Jaelan Phillips. His ability to sink into his anchor and hold up against the best edge rushers in football is not a common trait for a tight end. According to Pro Football Focus, Brown has allowed just 10 quarterback pressures and one sack on 216 pass-blocking opportunities. Big play reel The assumption for a tight end with a resume full of premier blocking reps is that his receiving standard is rather low. But when Brown was with the Patriots, big plays were his forte. He caught four passes for 20 or more yards in 2023, including this 58-yard touchdown. Angry runs The explosive plays are a nice complement to the game of a player who specializes in physicality, and that rugged prowess extends behind his work as a blocker – it translates as a ball carrier. Brown was nominated for the Angry Runs scepter following his tackle-shedding run against the Cardinals. Pharaoh Brown Foundation The Pharaoh Brown Foundation is dedicated to supporting and empowering its community through various programs and initiatives. The mission is to make a positive impact and create a better future for all. Last holiday season, Brown surprised families at a Burlington Coat Factory location in the Seattle area by paying off their layaway balances. • State of Play: A Deep Dive into Florida’s Gambling Industry 2025

Image by Ryan Spencer / Unsplash The Florida gambling industry is both intricate and dynamic, making it challenging to navigate the gaming environment. This is partly attributable to the combination of tribal gambling, regulatory modifications, and the progression of sports betting laws . It necessitates both an understanding of the legal framework and a pragmatic perspective. Our guide provides a comprehensive examination of Florida's gambling regulations, encompassing internet casinos, enabling both residents and tourists to stay informed about The Sunshine State’s gaming scene. A Synopsis of Florida’s Gaming Legislation A combination of state legislation, tribal agreements, and federal standards governs Florida's gambling rules. The state maintains a conservative stance on gambling, focusing on terrestrial tribal casinos and the state lottery. Simultaneously, Florida has stringent legislation regarding internet gaming, unlike the top-ranked, legal, and trustworthy sites found at Gambling.com . The Florida Gaming Control Commission supervises regulatory enforcement, licensing, and compliance. The Commission collaborates closely with the Seminole Tribe pursuant to the historic 2021 compact agreement.  Legal Gambling Venues in Florida The Florida casino landscape is distinctive within North America. It consists mostly of a few racetrack casinos, referred to as 'racinos', and Native American-operated tribal casinos. Racinos:  These establishments predominantly provide slot machines and electronic gaming options. In contrast to indigenous casinos, racinos have greater limitations, especially regarding table games. Seminole Tribe Casinos:  They manage many comprehensive casinos. These establishments provide a range of options from slot machines to high-stakes poker. For example, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood is distinguished by its premier facilities and dynamic poker environment. What About Florida’s Sports Betting Laws? Sports wagering in Florida has seen a tumultuous trajectory. The 2021 agreement with the Seminole Tribe authorized sports wagering for Florida residents. Nonetheless, ensuing legal disputes have rendered the market uncertain. As of 2025, a definitive course of action remains elusive. Consequently, Florida citizens seeking to wager on sports legally must choose out-of-state or offshore alternatives. Pari-mutuel wagering is permitted in Florida and is frequently utilized in horse racing and jai alai events. Pari-mutuel is a betting system in which bets are collectively pooled. It is commonly employed for wagering on sports events characterized by a ranking outcome. The Enforced Gambling Regulations in Florida The gaming rules in Florida are extensive and meticulous. These regulations are intended to regulate gambling operations within the state and safeguard participants. Furthermore, the regulations guarantee that gaming is executed equitably, honestly, and responsibly. They also protect public interests and uphold the integrity of the gambling sector. Whether you’re in Miami or Orlando, gaming in Florida encompasses not only casinos but also sportsbooks, online gambling, and charitable gaming. There is a distinct set of regulations and prerequisites for each of these games. So, say you wanted to bet on the 2025 Miami Open , it’s safe to say you should explore all options and research legal routes to gamble. The Florida Gaming Control Commission plays a crucial role in implementing these laws. They achieve this through the execution of routine inspections and the enforcement of compliance among operators. The rules encompass matters including licensing, age limitations, advertising criteria, and responsible gaming protocols. The regulations are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect the evolving dynamics of the gaming sector. This considers emerging technologies, shifts in consumer behavior, and novel game marketplaces.  The Current State of Online Gambling in Florida Florida has a cautious position on internet gaming: Online casinos:  They are Illegal. Players frequently resort to offshore sites, which pose risks such as inadequate consumer protection and inconsistent payment processing. Online Poker:  Online poker is not legally authorized. Nevertheless, several complimentary gambling platforms, such as Global Poker, function inside a legal grey area. These operators offer a substitute for conventional online poker.  Social Casinos: The Alternative to Real-Money Online Casinos Social casinos offer a substitute for conventional internet gaming. This indicates that gamers who do not engage in real money gambling can participate in games on free online gaming platforms. These platforms function by enabling participants to engage in casino-style games. Slot machines, poker, and blackjack are all available to players without requiring them to wager any real money. Players utilize virtual currency, such as complimentary coins or chips. These coins can be obtained through complimentary daily bonuses, in-game accomplishments, or purchased with real currency. This gaming technology enables social casinos to operate legally while providing an engaging experience for users. This also allows players to engage in casino games without the financial hazards associated with conventional gambling. Consequently, social casinos have experienced a surge in popularity among gamers across the United States. A multitude of gamblers appreciates a pleasurable and lawful method to engage in online casino games, accompanied by the prospect of tangible prizes. The Future of Legalized Gambling in Florida  Given the current circumstances, we must ask: what does the future hold for gaming in Florida?  The Potential of Expansion The burgeoning population and tourist sector in Florida present prospects for new gaming legislation and possibilities. This occurs notwithstanding the persistent challenges and possible obstacles. Obstacles and Impediments Legal, political, and societal obstacles persist prominently in Florida. This is especially applicable to sports wagering and internet gaming. Advocates for the expansion of legal gambling must align state legislation with federal regulations. They must also consider tribal agreements, which often lead to protracted negotiations and legal disputes. A significant political gap exists between legislators and stakeholders. Some proponents highlight the economic advantages of increased gambling, whilst others voice apprehensions. This is frequently predicated on societal issues, like addiction and criminality. This stance has remained fundamentally unaltered since the early 2000s, when the Bush family exerted significant influence in Florida politics. Final Thoughts on Florida’s Gambling Industry The complex and ever-changing gaming regulations in Florida remain. Although the state provides several legal gambling choices, the future for online gambling and sports betting is unknown. Anyone wishing to play legally and ethically in the Sunshine State must stay informed; so, we’ll cover any notable developments if they occur.  By ML Staff. Image courtesy of Unsplash

  • Coup’s Takeaways: Wiggins Explodes for 42 Against Charlotte as Heat End Ten Game Losing Streak

The game where Miami’s 10 game losing streak may have officially become a streak came a couple weeks ago when Charlotte came to town and gave the HEAT their fourth straight. Tonight, the HEAT had a chance to get back in the good graces of the basketball gods against the very same team. And revenge, it turns out, is a dish best served with a ton of jumpers. After a fairly standard start, Miami up five behind 11 combined points from Andrew Wiggins and Tyler Herro as Charlotte took the first timeout. Then the version of the HEAT that had shown up far too often during the streak made an appearance, a series of sloppy Miami turnovers stalling them out as Charlotte’s role players made threes for a 13-0 run. A couple minutes in the second quarter, after Miami was whistled for a rare inbounding violation on a made shot, it was Hornets by 12. It started to turn when Haywood Highsmith hit an incredibly tough turnaround, baseline jumper – maybe the first turnaround jumper he’s hit at the pro level – against the shot clock. From there it was a monstrous 28-6 run over the course of about nine minutes, Charlotte’s offense suddenly in shambles against Miami’s dismantling pressure. With Charlotte pressuring the arc just as most opponents have done of late, Herro and Wiggins continued to push downhill, one short floater after another turning the tide. By halftime it was 57-47, Miami having taken a mere 14 shots from long range as they racked up points in the paint. The lead held through the early portions of the third even as the defense softened a bit, Wiggins dropping in mid-range jumpers against Charlotte guards that had little chance to contest and Kel’el Ware finishing in the paint against those same smaller players. Mostly, though, Wiggins couldn’t miss and Charlotte didn’t have anyone who could make life tougher for him, their most mobile size in Miles Bridges spending the game defending Bam Adebayo. By the time Wiggins hit his third three of the quarter – to reach 30 points on 12-of-16 shooting at that point – Miami’s advantage was 20 with Charlotte showing few signs of mounting resolve. Miami up, 96-75, going into the fourth, Wiggins and Herro still carrying the offensive load, the end of the streak in sight as long as the offense could put together a decent enough final stretch to hold the line. The fourth quarter was hardly perfect, Charlotte pushing back within 13 midway through the period as Miami’s offense hit a rut. But another burster from Wiggins ended any threat in a hurry as the HEAT cruised to the finish line, taking it 122-105. You don’t need to look any further than Wiggins and Herro for why Miami turned this game around after their early bout with messy turnovers and won so comfortably, little in question in the second half. Wiggins had one of his best games in a couple years, just days after putting up a 20 point second quarter against Houston, and the past couple outings have been an excellent example of why he fits in so seamlessly as a third offensive option who can carry you for minutes on end. Wiggins is not the sort of player who is going to handle the ball a ton or run 30 pick-and-rolls in a game, but he can punish mismatches in all the ways he punished mismatches today. With Bridges on Adebayo Charlotte simply didn’t have any more wings left for Wiggins and he did just about anything he wanted with the advantages, post-ups and mid-range pullups and threes right over the top of his defenders. Not only were his 42 points (16-of-21 shooting) his highest total since 2016-17 but he set a new career high in made jumpers with 11. He won’t do this every night because nobody shoots this well all the time and there will be tougher matchups ahead, but when he came over in the trade we noted that he offered Miami a third player who could go for 30 when needed on any given night and after settling in he’s been just that. Herro, meanwhile, continued his adjustment to the adjustment, scoring 29 on 19 shots, as teams continue to send high pressure at him at the arc to limit his attempts from three. The need today is for the ball to be in Herro’s hands and for him to create, not for him to be finding a perfect balance of playing on and off the ball. His solution, then, has been to take the pressure and use it to find his driving lanes, which has turned into weeks of intermediate runners and floaters, often off one leg as he decelerates in the lane. It may not be the optimized version of Herro that we saw in the early months of the season – changes in shot profile aside, he was never going to stay that hot forever lest he was going to have the best shooting season in league history – but it’s the one Miami needs right now to keep the offensive train on the tracks. The losses to Detroit and Houston were close enough and well played enough that the feeling after those games was that had they not added onto an existing losing streak, they would have been games you shrug off and immediately place in the dustbin of the mind, Cade Cunningham’s buzzer beater aside. In a roundabout way this game would have qualified in much the same way, a largely forgettable night – Wiggins’ explosion aside – against a lottery-bound team that few would have remembered. Instead, this is the game that will always be the one that ended the 10-game losing streak, the one that turned around the vibes when the HEAT were in dire need of a positive feeling. Now everyone can remember what a streak like this feels like, both as a reminder to never want to feel that way again and as a grounding memory, the sort that makes other temporary, and regular, setbacks in a regular season schedule seem far more ordinary. As far as the standing the HEAT didn’t do anything but maintain the status quo as Atlanta beat Philadelphia and Detroit – catching them isn’t really an option anymore – beat the Pelicans. Miami remains in the No. 10 spot, a game back of Chicago for No. 9 with the Bulls owning that tiebreaker. For Miami HEAT tickets click here . By ML Staff. Courtesy of NBA.
