- Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: Sanlando Park’s Daria & Alejandro
As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, USTA Florida caught up with Daria and Alejandro, two tennis teaching professionals at Sanlando Park. Both come from Hispanic backgrounds and have been key assets in developing the local tennis community. Alejandro has been at the park for over five years, and Daria is approaching her second year, both share the goal of bringing tennis to everyone. When asked what sets Florida tennis apart from other states, Alejandro noted the diversity and accessibility. “One of the things is the diversity and how fast it’s growing. We have so many courts, and you can play all over,” he said. Daria emphasized the welcoming nature of the community. “Most people are really encouraged by others to just get out there, even though tennis is not an easy sport,” she said. For both professionals, diversity in tennis is vital, especially when it comes to inclusion. Alejandro reflected on his early days in Florida and not knowing anyone. “When I started, I didn’t speak English. I found people who spoke my language, and it was comforting. They introduced me to others, and I felt very welcomed,” he said. Daria shared a similar sentiment about how finding others with relatable backgrounds can boost your confidence and drive your love for the game. “You feel more connected to the sport by finding someone else from your country. You realize you’re not alone—there are others you can identify with,” she said. Alejandro also explained how embracing everyone’s diverse background in tennis helps create stronger communities. “It’s like being connected to someone who understands what you’re going through,” he said. “As an immigrant, everything is different, but you can connect with others who have been through the same experiences.” Daria added that this sense of community extends beyond the coaches to the players themselves. “Whether it’s the coaches or players from different parts of the country, that shared connection helps everyone figure out their path, whether it’s through the language barrier or navigating tennis in a new place.” When asked why they coach tennis, they both added their love for the game and helping other people find belonging. “I love interacting with other people, and seeing how great they are,” Daria said. Daria shared an experience she had with a child who was starting tennis. “She was about five or six years old, and she was really shy because she was new to the community and didn’t really know anyone,” Daria said. “I realized she spoke Spanish, so I started speaking to her and she was able to get better tennis, get better at communicating with others.” Daria was happy to be able to show that young girl that tennis is a universal language and everyone can play. Daria and Alejandro’s stories are a testament to how diversity not only strengthens the tennis community but creates opportunities for people from all backgrounds to feel connected and welcomed in the sport. - 10 Athletes Dive Into 49ERFX With Paris Henken for Clinic in Miami
On October 26 and 27, 10 athletes gathered at the US Sailing Center in Miami, FL for a 49erFX “Try it Out” clinic led by Rio 2016 49erFX Olympian, Paris Henken. Classified as the “Women’s Skiff,” the 49erFX is sailed by two women in the Olympics, but both male and female athletes gained valuable coaching as the young men will eventually progress into the 49er, the slightly larger “Men’s Skiff.” The clinic was the second of its kind in 2024 focused on building depth in the American 49erFX class and upskilling newer skiff athletes in a highly technical boat. Athletes with Olympic Development Director Rosie Chapman (far left, top row) and coach Paris Henken OLY (second from right, top row) Day one began with a morning meeting with a welcome from Olympic Development Director, Rosie Chapman, followed by a briefing from Henken on the plan ahead. The group gathered around a stationary 49erFX on a trailer and cycled through land drills learning footwork crossing the boat through tacks and improving coordination getting off and onto the trapeze wire with the tiller exchange. They learned how to rig the FX, then launched three boats and set out to put their land drills to the test on Biscayne Bay. In 10-12 knots of breeze, Henken and assistant Liam Waltz set a basic windward leeward course for laps on repeat and switched combinations of sailors all throughout the session, even swapping in themselves to demonstrate. “It was great to spend some more time getting the skipper’s perspective. Becoming a better skipper makes you a better crew and vice versa,” said Declan Donovan, usually a crew in his skiff sailing. “Crewing for Paris Henken allowed me to focus on ‘driving the boat with the mainsail.’ Being able to see how she responded with the helm depending on my sail trim quickly gave me a better sense of how I should be anticipating the gusts and lulls.” Day two began with a morning review of video footage gathered on day one so athletes could see and critique their movements and set goals for the final day of the clinic. The group hit the water in 10-15 knots of wind and continued working on footwork, controlling the rate of the turn through the tacks, and trapeze technique throughout the three-and-a-half-hour session. “This group was such a joy to work with,” said Henken. “Everyone was very eager to learn and ask questions, and it was very refreshing to see them jump into a difficult boat with the willingness to be uncomfortable. The learning curve in the skiff is very steep and over the course of the weekend (and after some capsizing here and there) I feel confident that everyone got just that little bit more comfortable on the trapeze wire and with the boat.” Paris Henken (Rio 2016 49erFX) reviews footage from day one with athletes before day two “This is the second 49erFX Try-it-Out Clinic that we’ve run this year,” said Chapman. “These weekends are instrumental to athletes’ development and next steps on the pathway. It gives them a chance to learn new skills in a fun, safe, and supportive environment. They are learning from the best firsthand! The camp would not have been possible without Paris Henken,” continued Chapman. “The hours of work that went into setting up the boats and dedication in the lead up and throughout the clinic was amazing. It’s not an easy task and I’m so grateful for Paris and Liam Waltz who assisted her this weekend. Setting up for land drills to work on footwork across the boat in the tacks, and coordination getting on and off the wire with the tiller exchange “We are in an exciting part of the road to LA28 right now; people are trying new classes and partnerships and it’s how we build strong foundations here at the start. I was excited to see the hard work and passion from both the coaches and the athletes. As always, we’re grateful to the US Sailing Center for being so accommodating and helping make this camp possible. Along with Sally Barkow (Head of the Olympic Operations), we have set ourselves up well for the fall Olympic Development camps and we’re excited to keep this momentum going.” About US Sailing The United States Sailing Association (US Sailing), certified by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee as the National Governing Body for the sport of sailing in the United States, is dedicated to leading, advancing, supporting, and ensuring integrity in sailing at every level. - From Canvas to Screen: The Artistic Journey of Slot Game Development
The world of slot game development combines artistic creativity with cutting-edge technology, resulting in immersive experiences that captivate players globally. From initial sketches to the final digital artwork, each stage of the process is meticulously crafted to create visually stunning and engaging gameplay. This fusion of art and technology not only shapes the visual appeal but also enhances the player's interaction, making each game unique. How do developers ensure that their artistic vision translates effectively from concept to the digital canvas? This article will focus on: The artistic process of slot game development The role of technology in bringing art to life on the screen The impact of art on player engagement and retention Art as a storytelling medium The Artistic Process The journey of creating a slot game starts with an idea, often inspired by popular culture , history, mythology, or current events. This idea is then fleshed out into a concept that will drive the artistic direction of the game. Concept artists play a crucial role at this stage, using their skills to translate ideas into visual representations. Sketching Once the concept is finalized, it's time for the sketching phase. Sketch artists create rough outlines and storyboards that serve as a blueprint for the final artwork. These sketches are refined and revised multiple times until the team is satisfied with the overall design. Games like those on Jackpot Party go through meticulous design stages to bring players captivating visuals and themes that evolve from simple sketches into complex, interactive experiences. Color and Design Next comes the color and design phase, where artists use a combination of traditional and digital techniques to create detailed artwork. This stage also involves creating backgrounds, characters, symbols, and animations that will bring the game to life. Sound Finally, sound engineers meticulously add special effects and carefully selected music that significantly enhance the overall gaming experience. This involves layering ambient sounds, adjusting audio levels, and incorporating dynamic soundscapes that bring the game to life. Technology in Art The journey from initial sketches to a fully functional slot game relies a lot on advanced tech. Game developers use powerful software and rendering tools to turn detailed artwork into digital assets that gaming platforms can easily handle. Graphics engines are key here, making sure transitions and animations flow smoothly while keeping the game’s artistic vibe intact. Plus, with cutting-edge technology, we get stunning high-definition graphics and 3D animations that really enhance the visual experience. With technology continuously evolving, game designers have more tools at their disposal than ever before. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are prime examples of how artists can use technology to create truly immersive experiences for players. Impact of Art on Player Engagement and Retention At its core, art in slot games is designed to engage and captivate players. The intricate details, vibrant colors, and dynamic animations all work together to create an immersive environment that draws players in. But art doesn't just help with initial engagement – it also plays a crucial role in player retention. By constantly updating and refreshing the artwork in games, developers keep players interested and coming back for more. Moreover, art can communicate key elements of the game's theme or storyline in a visually appealing way. This helps to enhance the overall gaming experience and keeps players invested in the game's world. Beyond Aesthetics: Art as a Storytelling Medium Art is not just about creating pretty visuals – it can also serve as a powerful storytelling medium in slot games. Through carefully crafted visuals, game designers can convey emotions, build suspense, and even reveal plot twists. For example, in horror-themed slot games, the use of dark and eerie artwork creates a sense of unease and tension for players. In adventure or fantasy-themed games, colorful and detailed images can transport players to new worlds and immerse them in the game's narrative. Art also allows for personalization and customization within games. Players can choose different themes or styles that resonate with them, making the gaming experience more personalized and enjoyable. 2025 and Beyond: The Future of Art in Slot Games We can expect to see even more advancements in the art and design of slot games in the future. For example: With the rise of virtual and augmented reality technologies , slot games may become even more immersive through 3D visuals and interactive elements. Game developers may also incorporate more user-generated content into their artwork, giving players the ability to create their own unique visuals within the game. The use of artificial intelligence and machine learning could lead to dynamic and ever-changing art in games, further enhancing player engagement and retention. In addition, as technology continues to advance, we may see a blurring of lines between video games and other forms of media such as film or animation. This could result in even more visually stunning slot games that push the boundaries of traditional art styles. Conclusion Art has always been an integral part of the gaming experience, and it will continue to play a crucial role in slot games for years to come. As technology advances, we can expect to see even more creative and innovative uses of art in these games, further enhancing player engagement and enjoyment. By ML Staff. - Coup’s Takeaways: Jimmy Butler Keys One-Minute, Nine-Point Run to Wrest Control From Detroit in Fourth Quarter
1. One game in Charlotte later and Miami’s offense couldn’t look much more different than it did on opening night against Orlando. Everything they want to be, everywhere they want to be balanced, they were tonight against Detroit. It helps that Charlotte and Detroit both have matchups to hunt, you still have to have the personnel to take advantage of them. Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler found their spots early, tilting Detroit’s defense past the point of no return to create open looks and closeout situations for Tyler Herro and Terry Rozier as the halfcourt efficiency, and Adebayo for a ridiculous lob, soared. Detroit kept up for most of the first quarter, hammering the offensive glass as Cade Cunningham – one of his best games of last season was their opener against Miami – continued to play calm and composed against Miami’s somewhat irregular defensive aggression. When the ball wasn’t in Cunningham’s sure hands, though, Detroit’s rhythm hit quite a bit of static. By the time Cunningham picked up his third foul in the second quarter, the turnovers started flowing and Miami turned a small deficit into a double-digit lead, 64-53 at the break, with a 142.2 offensive rating. The Pistons shot well enough in those opening periods, 7-of-16 from three, but 12-of-28 shooting (42 percent) inside the arc had them on creaky footing while Rozier and Herro combined for 28 on 17 attempts. With Dwyane Wade being honored for his newly unveiled statue and street designation at halftime, Miami was in a fine spot to enjoy a no-notes sort of half. With Cunningham back, Detroit kept their composure early in the third as they came back within one before five minutes had elapsed, Tim Hardaway Jr. finding his groove as Miami’s three faltered a bit. Cunningham picked up his fourth foul soon after that, however, followed by Detroit immediately giving up another pick-six turnover. And yet Detroit found itself in the lead moments after that on a Jaden Ivey corner three. Miami wasn’t without their good looks that weren’t falling, but a few miscues got Detroit going the other way. Pistons by one going into the fourth, Cunningham and Hardaway Jr. with a combined 37 on 18 shots. Miami back in the lead early in the fourth, Butler going right at rookie Ron Holland for a couple trips to the line. Another pick-six turnover soon after, the HEAT were right back to being up seven, a 9-0 run in the span of just over a minute of action. It wasn’t a complete unraveling – Detroit remained raveled enough to fight back behind Cunningham’s control – but it was a short story you’ve seen from plenty of young teams unsure of how to hold leads. No clutch game this time, a pair of threes from Herro and Rozier keeping things just out of reach around the five-minute mark as Jaime Jaquez Jr. closed the game with the starters, Detroit missing open threes by the handful until it was just too late. Miami takes it, 106-98. 2. This game turned on the first minute of the fourth quarter, the way it went down a prime example of how this HEAT group can pull their offense together when everything isn’t clicking into place as it was in the first half. Last year Miami’s best offensive lineups were Butler (23 points on 11 shots, a very Butler line) surrounded by shooting in Kevin Love’s five out units and though Love hasn’t been available (personal reasons) this year the HEAT have attempted to approximate those units with Thomas Bryant at the five. The general idea remains the same, give Butler the space to work against whatever matchup he chooses to work against, either getting himself into scoring range, getting to the line or kicking out for a three. Tonight Butler’s targets were Hardaway Jr. and the rookie Holland, and it was Holland who committed consecutive shooting fouls in that opening fourth quarter minute to plant Butler on the line. Right after those two trips, Haywood Highsmith – likely to again be one of the team’s unsung heroes due to his lowkey nature – was involved in consecutive steals which became pick-six turnovers going the other way for Miami, two of at least five on the night. For as much as we’ve discussed Miami’s offensive emphasis in these early stages of the season, nothing will affect their overall efficiency more than their defensive emphasis, focused on creating live-ball turnovers. Highsmith and Butler combined for seven steals between them and it was no mistake that Butler (+8) was the only starter in the plus-minus positive due to that specific lineup while Highsmith finished a team-high +17 in just 21 minutes of play. Spacing, Butler free-throws and steals (a 14-steal night overall for the HEAT when Detroit had total 16 turnovers). On nights when the threes weren’t falling – until just enough fell to put Detroit away – that’s the combination, in those five-out units with either Love or Bryant, that can keep Miami’s offense (112.8 for the game) above water. 3. Tonight was the culmination of days of celebrating Wade in Miami. He spoke to media during pregame – he also spoke after his statue was unveiled Sunday night – and acknowledged that he had seen the internet’s reaction. He also reminded that he was involved with the creation of the statue the entire way, having taken four trips to visit the artist’s studio in Chicago and provide feedback. In other words, Wade sounds enamored with the final product, what he calls an artistic interpretation of the most important individual moment of his career. Nothing else is more important than that. What’s important to consider is that while the statue is inspired by a story we’re all familiar with, the story of the statue is also just days old. It will mean what the people who come to visit it deem it to mean, over decades and decades and decades. Flags may fly forever, but statues last even longer. The HEAT are now a franchise with a piece of physical history that, unlike a trophy, anyone can come up to and touch. Not many NBA teams, and none as young as Miami, can say that. By ML Staff.
