  • Veterans Day Appreciation: Gulliksen and Gillie

To eflect on Veterans Day, the FSGA would like to take a moment to express their gratitude to players, volunteers, and all who have served our country. The camaraderie and sportsmanship in golf are truly boundless, similar to the fellowship of those who have served and protected our great country. In honor of Veterans Day this year, they have spoken with two veterans about their years in the service and their involvement with the FSGA.  Tyler Gulliksen | Flagler Beach | FSGA Player From a young age, Tyler Gulliksen dedicated himself to serving his country, a journey that began when he chose to attend the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The tragic events of 9/11 piqued his desire to serve and contribute to the greater good of the United States and its people. After completing his studies, Gulliksen earned a spot in the prestigious Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, which accepts only about 14 candidates each year. Gulliksen remarked “The EOD training stuff, you're diving, you're parachuting, your explosive ordnance training, and your combat skills training,” Looking back, he shared, “When I made it through training, I did 13 years in the Navy as an officer, and did multiple deployments from my time in the Middle East and North Africa. It was an awesome career, I loved it.” His dedication is mirrored by his wife, who served 25 years in the Marine Corps. Gulliksen was no stranger to the world of golf, having played on the Navy golf team for three of the four years he attended the Naval Academy. However, following his graduation from the Naval Academy, he took a long break from the sport due to the demanding training pipeline and his deployments. Gulliksen recalled, “After my last platoon commander tour and I was doing more of my staff tours, I got back into really playing competitive golf again.” When asked if the discipline he learned from the military transferred over to his success on the course, he stated “ I think it helps in everyday life. It helps you with it, especially golf. You basically learn to just be regimented and focused. And when you're going to be all in on something, it's like, you just kind of can dedicate your time and focus into it.” Gulliksen also noted that the relationships he formed in the FSGA developed in much the same way as those he built in the military, “My best friends in life, I've only really had in two places, the Naval Academy and my time when I was in the EOD community, and then golf. It's the closest thing where you make friends that you'll have forever.” To further his long-standing mission to give back to his country and community, Gulliksen recently took on the role of assistant coach for the Men’s Golf program at the University of North Florida. Gulliksen stated “You're mentoring these guys, you're helping them. And it's not just about golf. It's mainly about life. That's what I try to at least bring to it. UNF is a great program, and Scott Schroeder is a great coach. So it's really awesome just to be there and be around that kind of program.” In closing, and in very important fashion, Gulliksen declared, “Go Navy, Beat Army!” Doug Gillie | Palm Harbor | FSGA Tournament Volunteer Doug Gillie has been a dedicated volunteer with the FSGA since 2006, serving as a tournament chairman and rules official. Before his involvement with the FSGA, he was a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army and a combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam, where he had approximately 1,000 combat hours. Gillie recalls, “It was a very significant time in my life. You know, I saw the very best in men, and I saw the very worst in men.” He continued, “I went through my basic armored division training at Fort Knox in Kentucky. Then I went straight to flight school.” Gillie would spend three and a half years of his life committed to serving our country. After his military service, Gillie started his own business, dedicating the next 30 years to it before retiring in Florida. This transition opened the door to his involvement with the FSGA. He was finishing up a board assignment with another non-profit when he felt a pull toward something new. Golf was introduced to Gillie at a young age, “Golf had been a big part of my life when I was growing up, my mother, my father, my sisters…We played a lot of golf together, so I thought well, I’ll try the FSGA,” Doug reminisced “I figured it would give me an opportunity to give something back to the game of golf. I told Linda, my wife, I'll dedicate five years to this organization, and when I'm done there, I'll move on to something else. Well, that was 2006 and I'm still doing it.”  His first assignment was a U.S. Open Qualifier at Innisbrook Resort, where Johnny Williams was the tournament chairman. Gillie was immediately struck by Williams’ passion for the rules of golf and his unwavering commitment to the FSGA. In that moment, he realized he wanted to deepen his involvement. Gillie reflects on his military experience as a time of teamwork and shared goals, similar to the camaraderie he feels while running golf tournaments. He noted that this sense of unity is a key aspect of both environments. Gillie stated “When you were in the military, you're primarily part of a team. It was a bunch of people working together for the same goal and very similar to what we do in the FSGA. I really enjoyed being a tournament chairman, being a part of a  team, paying attention to detail, and working hard to put a good tournament together; and then just the satisfaction that you felt when things went right.”  In his closing remarks Gillie shared “Both the military and FSGA have been significant and important parts of my life, I’ve met many, many great people. I mean, it's a great organization. I love the FSGA, a lot of great people, a lot of good experiences, and a lot of long-lasting relationships.” The ties between golf and military service run deep, and the FSGA would like to thank all veterans of the United States Armed Forces. • Golden Crispy Latkes: Stovetop or Oven-Baked – Your Choice!

Make your Hanukkah celebration extra special with golden crispy latkes. You can make them on the stove or in the oven — your choice! Latkes, or crisp onion-scented potato pancakes, are traditionally eaten during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, when it is customary to eat foods fried in oil. At any Hanukkah party, you’ll likely find an apron-clad Jewish mother standing at the stove frying and serving up these savory treats. This tradition can be fun, but it can also be messy and hectic with hot oil splattering all over the stove and children running underfoot. That’s why I was thrilled to discover that latkes can also be fried in the oven! This recipe offers the option of using either the traditional stovetop method or the oven method. The stovetop method is faster, but requires cooking the latkes in batches. The oven method takes longer, but allows all the latkes to be cooked at the same time and is less messy. The latkes are delicious either way. Serve them warm with sour cream and applesauce . WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE LATKES If using the oven method, you’ll need two heavy nonstick rimmed baking sheets . Be sure they are truly nonstick and in good shape, otherwise the latkes may stick. STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS Make the Batter Peel the potatoes, then coarsely grate them with the onion together using a food processor or by hand, using a box grater. Place the potato and onion mixture in a fine sieve over the sink or a large bowl and press down firmly with a wad of paper towels or a clean dishcloth to wring out excess moisture. Stir and repeat a few times with fresh paper towels until the liquid is mostly drained. Beat the eggs in a large bowl. Add the potato and onion mixture, salt, baking powder, and flour. Mix until evenly combined. Fry the Latkes: Stovetop Method In a large cast iron or nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, heat about ¼ cup of oil. Once the oil is hot, drop mounds of batter into the hot pan. Flatten the mounds slightly with a spatula and reduce the heat to medium. Cook until the bottom of the latkes are golden brown and crispy, about 5 minutes. Flip and cook until the second side is golden, another 4 to 5 minutes, adjusting the heat as necessary. Drain on paper towels and repeat with the remaining batter. Fry the Latkes: Oven Method Preheat oven to 425°F and put 2 oven racks in the centermost positions. Fill two heavy nonstick rimmed baking sheets with ½ cup oil each. Place the pans in the oven for 10 minutes to heat the oil. Wearing oven mitts, very carefully remove the pans from the oven. Drop mounds of batter onto the baking sheets, spacing the latkes about 1½ inches apart. Using the back of a spoon, press down on the latkes to flatten just slightly. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the bottoms are crisp and golden. Carefully remove the pans from oven. Flip the latkes (tongs are the best tool as a spatula may cause oil to splatter). Place the pans back in the oven and cook until the latkes are crisp and golden brown all over, about 10 minutes more. Drain the Latkes After cooking on the stovetop or in the oven, transfer the latkes to a baking sheet lined with paper towels to drain. Serve the latkes with sour cream and applesauce. Latkes (Stovetop & Oven Method) By Jennifer Segal Make your Hanukkah celebration extra special with golden crispy latkes. You can make them on the stove or in the oven — your choice! Servings: Makes 18 latkes Prep Time: 30 Minutes Cook Time: 30 Minutes Total Time: 1 Hour INGREDIENTS 2 pounds russet potatoes (2 to 3 potatoes) 1 medium yellow onion, peeled (about the size of a baseball) 2 large eggs 1½ teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons baking powder ¼ cup all-purpose flour Vegetable oil, for frying Sour cream and applesauce , for serving INSTRUCTIONS If using the oven method, preheat the oven to 425°F and set two oven racks in the centermost positions. Make the Batter: Peel the potatoes, then coarsely grate them with the onion together using a food processor fitted with the steel blade or by hand, using a box grater. Stovetop Method: In a large cast iron or nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, heat about ¼ cup of oil. Once the oil is hot and shimmering, drop mounds of batter (about 3 tablespoons) into the hot pan (the batter should sizzle when you drop it in). Flatten the mounds slightly with a spatula. Reduce the heat to medium and cook until the bottom of the latkes are golden brown and crispy, about 5 minutes. Flip and cook until the second side is golden, another 4 to 5 minutes, adjusting the heat as necessary. Transfer the latkes to a baking sheet lined with paper towels to drain. Repeat with the remaining batter, adding more oil as necessary. Oven Method: Fill two heavy nonstick rimmed baking sheets with ½ cup oil each (see note). Place the pans in the oven for 10 minutes to heat the oil. Wearing oven mitts, very carefully remove the pans from the oven. Drop mounds of batter (about 3 tablespoons) onto the baking sheets, spacing the latkes about 1½ inches apart. Using the back of a spoon, press down on the latkes to flatten just slightly. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the bottoms are crisp and golden. Carefully remove the pans from oven and flip the latkes (tongs are the best tool as a spatula may cause oil to splatter). Remove the pans from the oven and transfer the latkes to a baking sheet lined with paper towels. Serve the latkes warm with sour cream and applesauce. Note: If using the oven method, you'll need two heavy nonstick rimmed baking sheets . Be sure they are truly nonstick and in good shape, otherwise the latkes will stick. Make-Ahead/Freezer Friendly Instructions: Latkes are best served fresh from the skillet or oven, but they reheat well. Place them on a foil-lined baking sheet in a 375°F-oven for about 10 minutes, or until hot. They can also be frozen for up to three months; reheat directly from the freezer; allow a few extra minutes in the oven. Special thanks to Jennifer Segal , for the recipe and images. • Czech Flying Bulls Achieve World-First Inverted Loop Around Europe’s Highest Railway Bridge

The Czech Flying Bulls Aerobatics Team has made aviation history by performing a world-first inverted group loop around Montenegro’s Mala Rijeka Bridge, Europe’s highest railway bridge. This landmark achievement, carried out in challenging conditions, marks a significant milestone for the team and concludes their 2024 season on a high note. The 80/20 Snapshot : Historic Achievement : The Czech Flying Bulls Aerobatics Team executed the first-ever inverted group loop around the Mala Rijeka Bridge in Montenegro, flying upside down through the steep canyon beneath the structure. Technical Challenge : Performing the loop in a tight diamond formation under the added pressures of negative G-force and within a confined environment highlights the team’s exceptional skill and precision. Complex Location : The steep canyon and towering structure of the Mala Rijeka Bridge created a demanding setting with no room for error, making the successful execution of the manoeuvre even more remarkable. Deep Dive : The Czech Flying Bulls Aerobatics Team executed the inverted loop with four planes in a tight diamond formation, navigating upside down through the steep canyon beneath the 500-metre-long Mala Rijeka Bridge. While inverted flight is a common element in aerobatic routines, completing it in such a confined space with the added pressure of negative G-force is a rare and highly challenging feat. “This kind of move is rarely done even in open skies. To do it in a canyon is something that hasn’t been attempted before,” team leader Stanislav Čejka noted. The four-member team - comprised of Stanislav Čejka (leader), Jan Tvrdík (right wing), Jan Rudzinskyj (left wing), and Martin Špaček (slot) - took off from Montenegro's Nikšić Airport before approaching the bridge. The manoeuvre demanded precise coordination and timing, as each pilot was required to follow the leader's every movement while skimming past rugged cliffs and flying within metres of the towering structure. The team’s skill was evident; even the slightest error could have resulted in disaster in such an unforgiving environment. “We had to block out everything - the rocks, the bridge - and concentrate solely on following Stanislav’s lead,” said Tvrdík. Months of careful planning preceded the attempt. The technical demands of flying in formation, compounded by the psychological challenges of performing in such treacherous surroundings, meant the pilots had to calculate risk and prepare for every eventuality. The bridge’s massive concrete pillars and rough geography added complexity, offering no margin for error. “The rocky terrain and the fact that a straight approach was only possible from one side made this [flight] exceptionally complex, especially in formation,” explained Čejka. Originally, the Czech Flying Bulls Aerobatics Team scouted several locations in the Czech Republic for this project, but nearby high-tension wires posed too great a risk, forcing them to look further afield. Montenegro’s Mala Rijeka Bridge proved to be the ideal setting - a remote, towering structure in a dramatic landscape spanning a deep canyon that would test every ounce of the team’s skills. Although they had planned to include additional aerobatic elements, such as a double mirror pass under the bridge - where one plane rolls while the other mirrors the movement, creating a symmetrical and visually striking effect in the air - weather conditions on the day limited their options. With numerous records and titles to their name, the Czech Flying Bulls Aerobatics Team continues to redefine the limits of formation flying. This latest world-first adds to their long list of accomplishments, solidifying their reputation as one of the best aerobatics teams in the world. Thanks to their relentless pursuit of excellence, they are poised to push the boundaries of aerial performance even further; and as they look ahead, the sky is no longer the limit. It’s just the beginning. By ML Staff. Content/Image courtesy of RedBull
