In addition, the sale offers the opportunity to acquire rare objects that honor the human drive to explore—such as a 16th century illuminated portolan chart, acclaimed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau’s pitch-book for the popular TV series ‘The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau’, and crucial artifacts from the Space Race, including astronaut Ed White’s spacesuit cover layer, the pilot’s in-flight logbook from Apollo 8—the first human spaceflight to reach the moon, and a flown and annotated checklist from the first American spacewalk in June 1965, among many others. - Marc Quinn on His New Show at Kew Gardens in London: ‘There’s a Sort of Alice in Wonderland Feel to it’
Fortunately for Marc Quinn, London’s grey sky momentarily clears and the sun shines down on the morning he has chosen to unveil 17 sculptures at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in west London. ‘Visibility and light are really important for the show,’ says the British artist, standing before Event Horizon (Sabal), a five-metre-high, immaculately polished stainless-steel palm frond. ‘These works are like analogue screens. Once they’re placed outside, they become activated, reflecting elements like time, climate and the audience. Light is the beginning of their life.’ To those familiar with his work, Quinn is known as an artist who explores what it means to be human. He first came to prominence with the work, Self (1991), a frozen cast of his own head made from 10 pints of his blood. It played a starring role in the Royal Academy’s watershed 1997 show, Sensation, and firmly established Quinn, alongside Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst, as one of the Young British Artists. For the past year, Quinn — now 60 — has swapped the confines of his east London studio for Kew’s 326 acres of UNESCO-protected gardens, home to some 17,000 living species of plants. With the guidance of Kew’s scientists and horticulturists, he has pored over the collections, searching for the most fascinating specimens to work with. Marc Quinn. Photo: Mary McCartney ‘Palms are used for so many different things,’ he says. ‘From shelter to fabrics and paper. They are life-sustaining plants. I think humanity would look very different without them.’ Quinn created Event Horizon (Sabal) using a 3D-scanner to produce a maquette, which his foundry then recreated in outsize dimensions from hand-beaten sheets of stainless steel. The result, he says, looks like an aeroplane’s engine turbines. Another rendering of a frond from the same species of palm, Singularity (Sabal), will be offered by Christie’s Private Sales in Dream Big — A Selling Exhibition of Monumental Sculpture from 14 June 2024. ‘If someone told you this plant had been designed by a human for some kind of purpose, you’d believe them,’ says Quinn. ‘It’s fascinating to me that plants evolve these complexities without having a brain. They’re not thinking about what shape they should become, they just grow. It’s quite extraordinary.’ Quinn repeated this process to make other works for the Kew show, including Light into Life (Photosynthetic Form) and Light into Life (The Evolution of Form) — both of which are also presented in Dream Big — as well as Burning Desire and Light into Life (The Morphology of Forms): sculptures of orchids in stainless steel or bronze painted blood-red. Positioned both outdoors and inside Kew’s Temperate House, their alien, fleshy, symmetrical forms are tantalizing and undeniably sexual. Marc Quinn (b. 1964), Burning Desire, 2011. Painted bronze. 393 x 436 x 216 cm. Kew’s Great Pagoda, which was built in 1762, is in the background. Photo: © RBG Kew There are also five huge steel silhouettes of medicinal plants, inspired by Kew’s Victorian herbarium (which contains seven million dried samples collected since the 1600s), as well as two colossal bronze casts of bonsai trees. ‘The bonsai sculptures are rooted in reality. The first was a portrait of a real tree that was a gold medal-winner at Chelsea Flower Show,’ explains Quinn. ‘Then I based them on arrangements by the Japanese bonsai master Masahiko Kimura. We used a jewellery casting technique to create the intricate leaves — it’s delicate, yet very strong. ‘I wanted to emphasise humanity’s control over nature. If you plant a bonsai in a garden, it will actually grow back into a full-size tree eventually.’ Quinn points out that he has been working with plant life for many years. His interest started in 1993, when he recreated Self with coconut water — ‘the blood of the plant’ — for the work The Origin of Species. Frozen solid in a mirror-sided cabinet, the work is on display at Kew as part of a survey of new and existing works about nature in the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art. Marc Quinn (b. 1964), Origin of Species, 1993. Stainless steel, coconut water, glass and refrigerating equipment. 206 x 61.5 x 61.5 cm. Artwork: © Marc Quinn studio. This segment of the exhibition also explores Quinn’s fascination with freezing flowers — a practice that culminated in Garden, a work commissioned by Milan’s Fondazione Prada in 2000, which featured thousands of freshly cut flowers frozen in tanks to create a temporary Garden of Eden. Also on display are photorealist still lifes that riff on Old Master flower paintings; spray-painted works in the style of cyanotype prints; a bouquet of flowers cast from dehydrated, readily available commercial animal blood; and a corridor lined with watercolours of orchids. ‘Formally, in terms of shapes, I find orchids very interesting,’ says the artist. ‘I began making sculptures like Burning Desire, of the Phalaenopsis [moth orchid], because I’m also interested in human shopping, which is now the engine of evolution. This is the most bred species of orchid in the world, meaning, genetically speaking, that it’s the most successful. But that’s not through evolution — it’s because humans like to buy them to look at. ‘Everything in the show comes back to man’s relationship with nature. There is a sort of Alice in Wonderland feel to it all,’ he continues. ‘I play with size — small things made big, plants and cells blown up — and lots of changing of shapes. Gardens can be quite hallucinogenic places, really.’ Marc Quinn: Light into Life is at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London, until 29 September 2024 Christie’s Dream Big — A Selling Exhibition of Monumental Sculpture features Marc Quinn’s Light into Life (Photosynthetic Form), Light into Life (The Evolution of Form) and Singularity (Sabal), in addition to large-scale sculptures by Richard Serra, Manolo Valdés and Louise Bourgeois. The works will be offered by Private Sales from 14 June to 30 September 2024, online ML Staff. Content/image courtesy of Christies

- From 5-Time Olympian to New Classes, U.S. Sailing Team Looking for A Comeback at Paris Games
The U.S. sailors going to the Paris Olympics are looking for a comeback in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Marseille — perhaps none more than veteran Stu McNay, returning for his fifth Olympics but competing in a new mixed-gender category. The Rhode Island sailor made his Olympic debut in the Beijing Games in 2008, the last time the United States, once dominant in the sport, won a gold medal. He competed again in London in 2012, the United States’ first shutout since the 1930s; in Rio in 2016, when the U.S. was limited to one bronze; and in 2021 in Tokyo, another shutout for the Americans, who watched the well-funded British team overtake them on the all-time sailing medals table. “As an older person, you can bring grit and determination,” McNay said after winning the team trials off Miami Beach, Florida, this year. The father of two will turn 43 during the races in France, while cementing his place among the elite of the elite — only 0.42% of Olympians in modern history have competed in five or more Games. But McNay has been perfecting a new trick for these Olympics. The mixed-gender 470 is a dinghy that will feature a man and a woman for the first time, instead of two athletes of the same gender. Sailing keeps getting faster and more physical, with lighter, highly technical boats — where every ounce of weight, and its distribution, makes a difference. So mixed-gender means rethinking every aspect of the racing, from the stiffness of the mast to communication concerns, sailors say. Many teams default to the woman at the helm, a more strategic position that involves defining the course by constantly checking other boats and the compass, and the man trapezing as crew, for more power at the sails and more control on how the boat hits the waves. That’s the configuration for Britain’s 470 team, which won silver at this year’s world championships and also features an Olympics veteran in Chris Grube, who competed in the Rio and Tokyo Games, with Vita Heathcote at the helm. But the current world champions are changing the dynamic; Spain’s Jordi Xammar will be at the helm and Nora Brugman, a dual-citizen who campaigned to sail for the U.S. in the Tokyo Olympics, will be his crew. “It’s really an experience for life, that teaches you a lot as a person,” said Xammar, who won a bronze medal in the men’s 470 at the last Games. This summer, there will be four men’s sailing categories, four women’s, and two mixed; the 470 and the Nacra 17, a catamaran that became the first Olympic mixed-gender boat at the Rio Games. “It gives me the chills” that these Olympics will be the first allowing men and women sailors equal medal opportunities, said Lara Dallman-Weiss, 35, who competed in the women’s 470 in the Tokyo Games and is going to be McNay’s crew for Paris. Dallman-Weiss is no stranger to grit, too, having learned to sail through snow and on ice on the lakes of her native Minnesota. For both U.S. athletes, however, the most grueling impact of their long-term commitment to Olympic competition has been on family life. After a week of neck-and-neck trial regattas started on a squally January day, McNay and Dallman-Weiss celebrated their win at the Miami Yacht Club with his wife and children, and her parents. That was a rare moment together, they said, since global competition puts them on planes to far-flung locales most of the year. “Each day you’re not with your family, you’re missing precious moments,” said McNay, whose two elementary school-age children can be quite “vocal” about how much they dislike dad leaving. On her part, Dallman-Weiss has struggled with not being more present as her father fought with a cancer diagnosis or as her friends celebrated their newborns. One baby she’s met — in fact, the 10-month-old boy was right there on shore in Miami waiting for the boats to be towed back into the bay at each day’s end — is the firstborn of her former women’s 470 Olympic partner, Nikki Barnes. Barnes, a 30-year-old from the U.S. Virgin Islands, was breastfeeding exclusively when she started her campaign for the 2024 team, and even though she didn’t make it, she has started training for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. “It feels more equal than ever before,” Barnes said of these Games, although she believes women sailors still feel more pressure to prove they belong. According to a May report by World Sailing, the sport’s global governing body, it’s an upwind battle to true gender balance, with women representing only 18% of coaches and support staff for the world championships, for instance. As long as the focus isn’t on stereotypes about each gender’s different strengths, mixed events like the 470 promote equality by showing men and women working together for the medals, said Michele Donnelly, a professor of sports and gender at Brock University in Canada. And “being on the podium and hearing the national anthem” is the dream that makes it all worthwhile for McNay and Dallman-Weiss. That, and the sheer pleasure they get when they hit the water, even though they’ve sailed for decades. “The moment you’re off the dock, big breath, life is good,” Dallman-Weiss said. Added McNay: “It’s more fun than any waterpark could ever be.” Courtesy of US Sailing. Words by Allison Chenard. Images by US Sailing

- Steve & Madelaine Halmos Present Florida Pre-Paid College Scholarships to Graduating Fifth Graders of Jack & Jill Center’s Madelaine Halmos Academy
Jack & Jill Center – the longest-running nonprofit provider of early childhood education in Broward County – celebrated the graduation of its fifth-grade students from its state-of-the-art Madelaine Halmos Academy (MHA) private elementary school on June 6. During the commencement ceremony, parents of each child in the 2023-2024 graduating fifth-grade class were surprised to hear that a college scholarship had been arranged for their children. The Jack & Jill Opportunity Scholarships, established through the Florida Prepaid College Plan, have been funded by long-time supporters, Steve and Madelaine Halmos. Mr. Halmos presented 13 graduates with the scholarships. These college scholarships await all these students when they graduate from high school. However, the students and their parents must do their part. Students must continue their education and stay out of trouble. If they simply do that, the college scholarship is theirs to use. To date, the Jack & Jill Center and the Halmos family have awarded 98 such scholarships to Madelaine Halmos Academy students since the program’s inception in 2022. “We are honored that long-time supporters Steve and Madelaine Halmos have donated Florida pre-paid college scholarships to our 2024 graduating class again this year and for their ongoing commitment to making a difference in the lives of Jack & Jill Center’s families,” said Jack & Jill CEO Amy Jewell. “The Madelaine Halmos Academy elementary school prepares students for success in career and life and the scholarships will propel our students for a bright, prosperous future.” “Madelaine and I are pleased to present Madelaine Halmos Academy’s graduating class with Florida pre-paid college scholarships,” said Steve Halmos. “For many of these students, they would be the first in their family to go to college. We want to help make that happen. We’re simply giving these families a hand-up, not a handout so that these students can live the American dream the way we have.” “We are tremendously grateful to receive a Florida prepaid college scholarship for our daughter Juliana and the support from the Halmos family and Jack & Jill Center,” said Dano Rolle. “This scholarship will truly make a difference in our child’s life, allowing her to continue her education in college without the financial burden.” The Madelaine Halmos Academy (MHA) is an expansion of Jack & Jill Center’s Early Education Center and debuted its new elementary school in June 2021. MHA provides a safe, academically sound and socially supportive environment for all learners. With its new building, MHA significantly extended its offerings by providing a school in the process of accreditation incorporating research-based best practices. In addition to the Florida pre-paid college scholarship for all graduates, MHA’s unique features include STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) curriculum; dedicated, highly-skilled staff and educators with low student-to-teacher ratios; engaging extracurricular activities fostering healthy social-emotional growth and personal development; integrated classroom technology including smart boards and individual devices for each student; individualized instructional approaches; interactive, educational field trips; extended day programming (before- and after-school care and camps); daily healthy breakfast, lunch and snacks; family wraparound support programs; health services; on-site counseling and therapeutic services including two on-campus therapy assisted dogs; and summer camp experiences. MHA’s kindergarten through fifth-grade program currently serves 150 total students from high-need families, including early education and elementary school education, who benefit from the Jack & Jill education program. MHA has the capability to serve 220 students in total and is currently enrolling for the 2024-2025 school year. Since 1942, Jack & Jill Center has remained steadfast in its mission to strengthen children and families through innovative education, supportive programming and community engagement. In the past 80 years, Jack & Jill Center has served over 30,000 children and families in South Florida. Jack & Jill Center supports children of high-need working families through quality early childhood education, elementary education and family strengthening programs to ensure every child and family has the tools they need to be successful. - Real Estate Owner & Operator Basis Industrial Secures $39.6 Million Construction Loan for its Mixed-Use Property at 100 Business Park Drive in Armonk, New York
On May 31, 2024, Basis Industrial, a privately held and vertically integrated real estate owner and operator, secured a $39.6 million loan for construction, for a new build and for the existing refinance of its mixed-use property located at 100 Business Park Drive, Armonk, NY 10504. The project consists of a 60,000 existing square foot mixed-use warehouse and a development site where a 117,000-square-foot mixed-use building will be constructed. Basis purchased the site in spring 2023 and anticipates completing the new facility, which achieved 100% preconstruction leasing, by Q3 2025. The property will be composed of an Extra Space Storage branded and operated self-storage tenant measuring 82,400 square feet, a Sportime branded and operated pickleball facility measuring 26,550 square feet and a new warehouse facility for the expansion of Jan-Tile, measuring 8,000 square feet. Jan-Tile is the primary existing tenant at the existing 60,000-square-foot warehouse. Anthony Scavo, president and managing partner of Basis Industrial, and Ackman-Ziff Real Estate Group arranged the financing for the 36-month interest-only loan. Beach Point Capital Management is the lender. This is the second transaction that Beach Point Capital Management has financed for Basis Industrial as it also provided a preferred equity/mezzanine loan of roughly $70 million when Basis Industrial purchased four assets and refinanced two assets in Florida and Texas, totaling a 1,328,443-square-foot portfolio, in a $220 million transaction in November 2023. “Beach Point Capital Management came through again for us. They have become a valued partner in our continuing acquisition and development streak,” said Scavo. “We are pleased to have secured this $39.6 million construction loan for our mixed-use property in Armonk. Westchester County has a lack of industrial assets and very low vacancy in this asset class. By expanding our New York portfolio into this county, we are happy to provide this exceptional self-storage, recreation and warehouse facility. We have the groundbreaking scheduled for July 2024.” Basis uses its subsidiary management company, BaySpace, to manage the company’s industrial assets. - Jack & Jill Center Announces its Policy for Free and Reduced-Price Meals for Students Under the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs
Jack & Jill Center is pleased to announce an amendment to its policy for serving meals to students under the National School Lunch / School Breakfast Programs for the 2024-2025 school year. All students attending The Madeline Halmos Academy will be served lunch/breakfast, at no charge, under the Community Eligibility Provision of the NSLP. The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) is a non-pricing meal service option for schools and school districts in low-income areas. CEP allows the nation’s highest poverty schools and districts to serve breakfast and lunch at no cost to all enrolled students without collecting household applications. Instead, schools that adopt CEP are reimbursed using a formula based on the percentage of students categorically eligible for free meals based on their participation in other specific means-tested programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Any interested person may review a copy of the policy by contacting Bill Butler, Food Services Department, 1315 W Broward Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312 and 954-463-8772.
