- The Sober Curious Movement: Why It’s Time to Redefine Our Relationship with Alcohol
The sober curious movement is gaining momentum as more people question their drinking habits and explore life without alcohol. This trend encourages individuals to rethink their relationship with alcohol, focusing on the benefits of sobriety without necessarily committing to complete abstinence. Find out what it means to be sober curious, the reasons behind this growing trend, and how to redefine our relationship with alcohol for a healthier lifestyle. A group of friends having coffee Understanding the Sober Curious Movement The sober curious movement is not about quitting alcohol altogether but rather about choosing to drink less or not at all in social situations. It’s about being mindful of the role alcohol plays in our lives and making conscious decisions about when and why we drink. This movement is appealing to a broad audience, including those who do not identify as having a drinking problem but are curious about the benefits of reducing or eliminating alcohol from their lives. The Rise of the Trend Several factors contribute to the rise of this trend. Health and wellness are at the forefront, with many people becoming more aware of how alcohol impacts their physical and mental well-being. Additionally, a growing cultural shift toward mindfulness and intentional living encourages people to make healthier lifestyle choices. Social media and the influence of public figures who advocate for sobriety or reduced drinking also play a significant role. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have communities where people share their sober curious journeys, creating a supportive environment for those looking to make a change. Healthier lifestyle environments are redefining our relationship with alcohol Benefits of Redefining Our Relationship with Alcohol Improved Physical Health Reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption can lead to numerous health benefits. These include better sleep, increased energy levels, and improved liver function. Alcohol is also linked to several long-term health risks, such as heart disease and certain cancers. By cutting back, you may reduce your risk of these serious conditions. Enhanced Mental Well-Being Alcohol can negatively impact mental health, exacerbating conditions like anxiety and depression. By drinking less, individuals often experience improved mood, reduced anxiety, and a clearer mind. The sober curious movement encourages people to seek healthier ways to cope with stress and emotions. Better Relationships Alcohol can sometimes strain relationships due to behaviors like irritability, aggression, or neglecting responsibilities. By reducing alcohol intake, many people find their relationships improve as they are more present and engaged with their loved ones. Financial Savings Alcohol can be expensive, especially if you frequently drink at bars or restaurants. Cutting back on alcohol can lead to significant financial savings , allowing you to invest in other areas of your life, such as hobbies, travel, or wellness activities. How to Start Your Sober Curious Journey Reflect on Your Drinking Habits The first step in redefining our relationship with alcohol is to reflect on our current drinking habits. Consider why and when you drink. Are there specific triggers or social situations that lead to drinking? Understanding your patterns can help you make more mindful choices. Set Clear Intentions Decide what you want to achieve by drinking less. This could be for health reasons, to improve your mental well-being, or to save money. Setting clear intentions will give you a sense of purpose and motivation. Find Alternatives One of the challenges of reducing alcohol consumption is finding enjoyable alternatives. Explore non-alcoholic beverages like sparkling water, herbal teas, or mocktails. Many bars and restaurants now offer a variety of non-alcoholic options, making it easier to socialize without alcohol. There are many alternatives to alcohol that you can enjoy Seek Support Whether through friends, family, or online communities, having a support system can make your sober curious journey easier. Share your goals with others and seek encouragement and accountability. Practice Mindfulness Mindfulness can help you stay present and make intentional choices about drinking. Techniques such as meditation, journaling, or yoga can support your mental and emotional well-being. Be Patient with Yourself Redefining our relationship with alcohol is a process that takes time. Be patient and compassionate with yourself as you navigate this journey. It's okay to have setbacks; what's important is to stay committed to your goals and learn from your experiences. What if Professional Support and Guidance are Necessary? For some individuals, especially those with a history of heavy drinking or dependence, reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption can be challenging without professional support. In such cases, seeking help from an alcohol rehab facility can provide the necessary resources and structured environment to navigate sobriety successfully. These facilities offer medical supervision, counseling, and tailored programs that address both the physical and psychological aspects of alcohol dependence, making it easier for individuals to transition into a sober curious (or any other preferred) lifestyle. Sober Curious Resources and Communities There are many resources available for those interested in the sober curious movement. Online communities on social media platforms provide support and inspiration from others on a similar path. Joining local or virtual sober curious groups can also be beneficial. These groups often host events, workshops, and social gatherings that focus on wellness and connection without alcohol. Redefining Social Norms Around Drinking A significant aspect of the sober curious movement is challenging societal norms around alcohol consumption. In many cultures, drinking is deeply ingrained in social rituals and celebrations. Individuals can help shift these norms by choosing to drink less and creating more inclusive environments for those who prefer not to drink. This change also involves redefining what it means to have fun and connect with others. Activities that don't revolve around alcohol, such as hiking, cooking classes, or art workshops, can provide meaningful and enjoyable experiences. Enjoy fun activities with friends that don’t involve drinking The Future of the Sober Curious Movement As the sober curious movement continues to grow, it's likely to have a lasting impact on how society views alcohol. With increasing awareness of the benefits of reducing alcohol consumption and more people embracing this lifestyle, we may see a shift towards healthier, more mindful ways of living. The Takeaway The sober curious movement invites us to redefine our relationship with alcohol, promoting mindfulness and intentionality in our choices. By exploring the benefits of drinking less and finding new ways to enjoy life without alcohol, we can improve our physical health, mental well-being , relationships, and financial stability. Embracing the sober curious lifestyle is a personal journey, and finding what works best for you is important. Whether you're looking to cut back or eliminate alcohol, taking steps toward a more mindful approach can lead to a happier, healthier life. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Pexels

- USTA Florida Athletes Gauff, Collins, and Krajicek Lead USA Olympic Tennis Team
Florida has long been a cradle of tennis talent, consistently producing athletes who excel on the global stage. This year, the tradition continues as three players from the Sunshine State; Coco Gauff, Danielle Collins, and Austin Krajicek, are set to represent the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games . Qualifying for the Olympic team is an achievement in itself. First off, players must be in good standing with the USTA both on and off the courts. They also need to have represented the United States in either the Davis Cup or Billie Jean King Cup . Coco Gauff, Danielle Collins, and Austin Krajicek have all met these requirements and will wear red, white, and blue on the national stage. Coco Gauff won the French Open Doubles earlier this year in France. Coco Gauff has had a great first half of 2024. Building on her 2023 US Open win , Gauff claimed victory at the ASB Classic, in January, for the second consecutive year. With a remarkable record of 20-1 in sets during this streak at that tournament, this was her seventh career singles title. She also triumphed at the French Open in Women’s Doubles alongside Katerina Siniakova, adding her first Grand Slam title in Doubles. She will look to recreate this success on the same courts at the 2024 Paris games. Danielle Collins, who announced that 2024 would be her final year on the WTA tour, is looking to ride off into the sunset. From her beginnings in junior tennis capturing multiple wins at the Bobby Curtis Junior State Championship, Collins has always been a standout. In her farewell year, she achieved back-to-back victories at the Miami Open and the Credit One Charleston Open, hoisting a 13-win streak in that time. Finally, Austin Krajicek, known best for his doubles mastery, brings a ton of experience. Last year, Krajicek won the French Open, his first Doubles Grand Slam title of his career. Austin Krajicek has had success in Paris, winning the 2023 French Open Doubles. Historically, Florida has been home to some top names in Olympic tennis. Jennifer Capriati made headlines with her gold medal win in women’s singles at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics at 16. She defeated the legendary Steffi Graf. - Padel Champions: Josemaría & Sánchez Tie Tournament Win Record with Málaga P1 Victory
Top padel seeds Paula Josemaría Martín (ESP) and Ariana Sánchez Fallada (ESP) went into the history books on Sunday at the Premier Padel P1 event in Málaga when they equalled the sport's record of 32 women's titles as a pair while Arturo Coello (ESP) and Agustín Tapia (ARG) got back to winning ways. Here is all you need to know: Josemaría and Sánchez did not have it all their own way in Spain as they had to play two three-set matches en route to the final where they took on third seeds Gemma Triay Pons and Claudia Fernández Sánchez for the second time this season. After getting swept aside in the first set 6-1, they regrouped and fought back to win 6-4 6-2 to bank their 32nd title together that equalled the record set by twins Mapi Sánchez Alayeto and Majo Sánchez Alayeto - also known as the Gemelas Atomikas. Spaniard Josemaría, 27, said: "What I always say and what I try to convey to everyone is that you must never give up, never stop trying." Compatriot Sánchez, 26, added: "We must be proud of our work, the fight on every ball, the determination to overcome such difficult moments." In the men's event, Coello and Tapia cruised to their sixth title of the season after Doha, Acapulco, Puerto Cabello, Asuncion and Santiago without dropping a set the whole week. After seeing off fourth seeds Juan Lebrón (ESP) and Francisco Navarro (ESP) 6-4 7-5 in the semi-finals, they powered past main rivals and second seeds Alejandro Galán (ESP) and Fede Chingotto (ARG) 6-2 6-3 in the final. Galán and Chingotto were bidding to win three 2024 titles on the bounce in Galán's home country and also had an easy path to the final where they faced the might of top seeds Coello and Tapia, but it was the other Argentine/Spanish pair who won to cut it to 5-4 in favour of 'Chingalan' this year. Argentine Tapia, 24, admitted: "A week ago in Genova we came out humiliated, but here we redeemed ourselves and are overjoyed to have won the title." Spaniard Coello, 22, revealed: "When things go wrong I realise how much, before being partners on the court, we are friends with Agus." In the women's event, Málaga's very own Beatriz González looked to have overcome her recent injury in reaching the semi-finals with her Argentine partner Delfina Brea Senesi but, after two hard three-set wins in a row, she had to pull out of the last-four clash with third seeds Pons and Sánchez. With Carlos Alcaraz winning the men's tennis title at Wimbledon and Spain the Euro 2024 football title, Josemaría, Sánchez and Coello helped make it an even more magical day for the host country at the Palacio de Deportes José María Martín Carpena ahead of the next P2 stop in Nokia, Finland from July 27 through to August 4 at the PadelOne Arena where some new men's pairs will start competing. The 2024 season marks a significant milestone as Premier Padel has become the unified global professional world tour under the governance of the FIP with 25 tournaments across 18 countries on five continents leading into the hotly anticipated Premier Padel Tour Finals in Barcelona from December 18-22, where the top-ranked pairs will compete for the prestigious 2024 season trophy - all quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals live on Red Bull TV for worldwide fans to savour. - Christie’s Special Auction Offers an Inside Look at the Historic Computer Collection Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen
‘Paul Allen had an insatiable curiosity for technology,’ recalls Stephen Jones, Senior Restoration & Collection Manager, Living Computers. With an aim to run his early software and collect first-generation artifacts from his field, Mr. Allen passionately acquired and restored many historic machines. In 2012, he opened Living Computers in his native Seattle, which displayed his growing collection, restored and maintained by a team of engineers to working order. ‘Paul put this collection together to inspire the next generation of technologists,’ says Jones, who served as the senior restoration manager of the museum. ‘It represents the history of computing from all sorts of angles. We're talking mainframes, minicomputers, and microcomputers. These are really great examples of breakthrough technology, such as the use of discrete semiconductors to create a central processor and the subsequent miniaturization that integrated circuits afforded, which enabled further micro miniaturization and ultimately the microprocessor.’ Bill Gates and Paul Allen in the KI taperoom, 1981 From 23 August to 12 September, Christie’s will offer groundbreaking computers from the pioneering technologist’s collection as part of Gen One: Innovations from the Paul G. Allen Collection . The official company Apple 1 that belonged to Steve Jobs and a Cray 1 supercomputer will appear in the live sale, Pushing Boundaries: Ingenuity from the Paul G. Allen Collection , while a dedicated online sale, Firsts: The History of Computing , will feature mainframe, mini- and microcomputers and many more objects that formed the building blocks of modern technology. These devices encompass pivotal firsts — from the advent of the graphical user interface to the point-and-click mouse — that helped make our digital world. MITS Altair 8800 Microcomputer Released by Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems, Inc. in 1974, the Altair 8800 attracted attention when it appeared on the cover of Popular Electronics in January 1975. Small and relatively inexpensive, the Altair 8800 became the world’s first commercially successful personal computer, paving the way for the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s. A MITS Altair 8800 Microcomputer, MITS, 1976. Estimate: $3,000-5,000. Offered in Pushing Boundaries: Ingenuity from the Paul G. Allen Collection on 10 September 2024 at Christie’s in New York ‘A few months after the 8800 was announced, one of those brain waves came to me,’ Mr. Allen wrote in his 2011 memoir Idea Man . ‘What if a microprocessor could run a high-level language, the essential tool for programming a general-purpose computer?’ Mr. Allen and Gates contacted MITS founder Ed Roberts saying that they had a BASIC interpreter for the product they’d like to demo for him — though the truth was they hadn’t even started it yet. On the plane to the meeting, Mr. Allen realized they had forgotten an important piece of code. He then improvised a BOOT LOADER to key into the Altair, which was necessary for loading his BASIC paper tape via a Teletype ASR33. With an entrepreneurial mentality and on a tight deadline, Mr. Allen finalised the machine’s first programming language and Microsoft’s first product. Apple 1 Personal Computer A collection of the most influential computers in history would be incomplete with Apple’s inaugural product, but Mr. Allen didn’t source just any Apple 1. He acquired the official company computer that sat on Steve Jobs’ desk. The machine, which the Apple cofounder personally worked on, is set to be a highlight of the Gen One: Innovations from the Paul G. Allen Collection sale. In 1976 the first Apple Computer heralded the home computing revolution as the first personal computer sold with a fully assembled motherboard. An Apple-1 Personal Computer, Apple Inc., 1976. Estimate: $500,000-800,000. Offered in Pushing Boundaries: Ingenuity from the Paul G. Allen Collection on 10 September 2024 at Christie’s in New York Designed by Steve Wozniak, the computer came as a kit intended to be assembled by hobbyists. Its I/O (Input/Output) was a cassette tape, and it was one of the first personal computers with monitor and keyboard access. ‘It demonstrates how quickly the home computer was evolving,’ says Jones. ‘You have an all-in-one unit essentially. Just hook it into a monitor and get going.’ To keep costs low, the machine didn’t come with a case, so many Apple 1 owners simply mounted the computer on a plank of wood. Under 100 of the 200 original Apple 1s produced are known to exist today, making them incredibly scarce. Xerox Alto Now best known for their copiers and printers, Xerox pioneered one of the first personal computer workstations with the release of the Xerox Alto in 1973 from their Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). The Alto ushered in major hallmarks of digital computing that we still use 50 years later, such as the graphical user interface (GUI) and the now ubiquitous mouse. A Xerox Alto, Xerox, 1973. Estimate: $5,000-8,000. Offered in Pushing Boundaries: Ingenuity from the Paul G. Allen Collection on 10 September 2024 at Christie’s in New York It marked one of the earliest departures from the text-based command-line interface, replacing it with the more inviting one we know today, in which users interact via onscreen icons and other visual indicators. The Alto was one of the first computers to employ a WYSIWYG (‘What You See Is What You Get’) bit-mapped display that showed exactly what would be output from a printer. The Alto had a limited production totalling about 2,000 systems, but its impact on the look and feel of personal computing looms large. As immortalised in the movie Pirates of Silicon Valley , Gates and Allen as well as Jobs and Wozniak visited PARC to check out the Xerox Alto, which served as a major inspiration in the development of the Windows and Macintosh operating systems. According to Jones, the Alto’s GUI and mouse, as well as its use of Ethernet networking, informed Mr. Allen’s thinking as the head of the hardware division of Microsoft. DEC PDP-10 KI-10 Mainframe Computer Allen’s interests extended to machines that predate the personal computer. The Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-10, first manufactured in 1966, was a breakthrough in the history of computing. The mainframe computer family became the first widely used timesharing system, an operating system that allowed multiple users across various terminals to access the same computer simultaneously. A DEC PDP-10 KI-10 Mainframe Computer, Digital Equipment Corporation, 1974. Estimate: $30,000-50,000. Offered in Firsts: The History of Computing from the Paul G. Allen Collection from 23 August to 12 September 2024 at Christie’s online While a student at Lakeside School in Seattle, a 14-year-old Mr. Allen befriended his classmate Bill Gates, and the two first cut their teeth programming on a teletype connected to a remote GE-635 timesharing system, before moving on to a PDP-10 at the Computer Center Corporation (CCC) in the city’s University District. (As high school students they were banned from CCC after they manipulated bugs in the mainframe’s code to gain free computer time.) Given the PDP-10’s formative role in honing Mr. Allen’s programming skills — ‘It was the first computer he could really get his head around and study because he had such direct access,’ says Jones — he was eager to acquire and restore one for his collection. ‘When it arrived, he wanted to see it immediately,’ recalls Jones of the DEC PDP-10 KI-10 from 1974 that will be offered in the upcoming sale. Mr. Allen devoted significant personal time to getting the computer up and running. The machine is one of, if not the only, KI-10 that is operational today. Cray-1 Supercomputer The Cray-1 Supercomputer — designed by the eccentric engineer Seymour Cray and released by his firm, Cray Research, in 1975 — offered unparalleled processing power and a distinctive C-shaped design surrounded by benches that came custom-upholstered in a variety of groovy colors. The fastest computer in the world at the time, the Cray-1 was essentially an ultra-high-speed calculator used by scientists and engineers for weather forecasting, computational chemistry, and physics simulations, amongst other applications. ‘The examples in this collection reflect early optimistic ideas of AI in the 1960s and 1970s, when folks were very optimistic that the computer could solve problems,’ says Jones. A Cray-1 Supercomputer, Cray Research, Inc., 1976-78. Estimate: $150,000-250,000. Offered in Pushing Boundaries: Ingenuity from the Paul G. Allen Collection on 10 September 2024 at Christie’s in New York In developing the costly, high-powered computer, Cray Research accumulated millions in debt, but with an original price tag of around $8 million on their product, they only needed to sell a dozen machines to stay afloat. In the end, they sold more than 80 Cray-1s, cementing the brand as a leader in supercomputing — not to mention innovative design. Mr. Allen didn’t have direct access to the Cray-1 in its heyday, according to Jones, but he was eager to acquire one of the iconic machines to tell the history of computing. When it finally arrived at the museum, he joked, ‘Should we put an emblem on the outside of the building that says, “Cray Inside,” like Intel Inside?’ ML Staff. Content/image courtesy of Christies. - Vacheron Constantin Introduces New All-Titanium Overseas Tourbillon Model
Titanium, known for its light weight, robustness, and hypoallergenic properties, has become an ideal material for sports and technical watches. Vacheron Constantin, a brand with a pioneering spirit since the early 19th century, first introduced its Overseas collection in 1996 and revisited it eight years later. The collection, characterized by a sporty and adventurous aesthetic, now features a new all-titanium watch. The Overseas Tourbillon In 2022, Vacheron Constantin presented its first timepiece with an all-titanium exterior: the Overseas Tourbillon Skeleton model. This watch has now been updated with a solid blue dial, maintaining the signature look of the Overseas collection. Crafting titanium watches demands precision, as only grade 2 and grade 5 titanium are suitable. The Overseas Tourbillon boasts a delicate vertical satin-brushed finish on the bracelet and caseback, a circular satin-brushed finish on the bezel, and a blue-lacquered dial with a sunburst satin-brushed flange. Technical Excellence & Design The Overseas Tourbillon features the ultra-thin self-winding Calibre 2160, just 5.65 mm thick, with a 22K gold peripheral oscillating weight that provides an 80-hour power reserve. This movement highlights Vacheron Constantin's technical mastery and offers a clear view of its meticulous finishing. The watch's tourbillon compensates for the effects of gravity on the movement's isochronism, ensuring precision and fitting snugly on the wrist at just over 10 mm thick. Versatility & Interchangeable Straps This model includes an integrated titanium bracelet with a triple-blade folding clasp and a comfort-adjustment system. The bracelet can be swapped for two additional straps – calfskin leather or blue rubber – without tools, making the watch adaptable to various styles and environments. Interview Insights: Christian Selmoni, Style & Heritage Director Christian Selmoni explains that Vacheron Constantin first introduced titanium in its collections with the Quai de l'Île in 2008 and the Overseas in 2009. The brand's collaboration with mountaineer Cory Richards led to the creation of two Overseas Everest limited series, emphasizing titanium's suitability for sports watches. These models paved the way for the current all-titanium Overseas Tourbillon, offering a robust, lightweight, and technical timepiece with a tourbillon movement. Artistic & Technical Mastery Vacheron Constantin's 2024 theme focuses on the interplay between geometry and artistry. From initial sketches to the final product, the brand combines mechanical engineering with design, creating watches that are both technically impressive and aesthetically pleasing. The Overseas collection, alongside others like Traditionnelle and Patrimony, showcases this blend of art and geometry, embodying Vacheron Constantin's dedication to high watchmaking. Interview Christian Selmoni, Style & Heritage Director Talk to Us When did Vacheron Constantin introduce titanium to its collections? Titanium – which is 30% more resistant than steel and only half its weight – is a metal whose properties are perfectly suited to Vacheron Constantin's sports watch collection. The first proposal was for the Quai de l'Île collection in 2008, followed by Overseas timepieces in 2009. In those cases, it was used for the bezels of two self-winding models, one of which was equipped with a chronograph. The following year, the same bezel was adopted for a dual time model. The collaboration with photographer and mountaineer Cory Richards, a member of the 'One of not Many' talent circle, opened up new horizons. The two Overseas Everest limited series dedicated to him – a dual time and a chronograph – were designed to cope with the hostile environments of Cory Richards' expeditions and exploration missions. The two 2021 models are distinguished by their titanium case, bezel, pushers and pusher rings. The aim was first and foremost to accentuate the sporty, hard-wearing aspect of these Overseas watches, with very convincing results. Those were however limited editions and not yet watches in regular production? These two models with their powerful design and steel case were produced in two 150-piece limited series. A prototype of the dual time version accompanied Cory Richards on one of his Everest expeditions in 2019. Vacheron Constantin's designers took things a step further in 2022 by offering an all-titanium Overseas in the company's catalogue. This was a tourbillon skeleton timepiece: a first in the collection that foreshadowed this year's model, also made in titanium but with a solid dial that is openworked on the tourbillon only. Inside the case beats the same ultra-thin Calibre 2160 in a non-skeleton version. The two watches represent a very interesting alternative to the steel watches in the collection. They offer the properties of sporty timepieces through their lightness and robustness while remaining on a par with the technical timepieces for which Vacheron Constantin is renowned. What's more, customers can now choose between a skeleton version and one with a blue dial. Given that titanium is often a material of choice for sports watches, why choose a tourbillon movement rather than a chronograph, for example, for these first all-titanium models?! With the two Overseas Everest limited editions, the Maison has already offered models of this kind, which were very enthusiastically received. It was therefore time to explore other avenues and the choice fell on the ultra-thin self-winding tourbillon Calibre 2160. However, to ensure it stood out from the crowd, it was designed in a skeletonised version, a first in the Overseas collection that required a great deal of ingenuity to remove 20% of the calibre's material. The result is a watch that is robust and very light thanks to the titanium, highly architectural thanks to its skeleton movement, yet extremely technical thanks to the presence of a tourbillon regulator, a guarantee of precision. In short, all the ingredients of a chic Overseas sports watch. In that respect, this year’s model is an extension of its predecessor, picking up its codes yet with a different aesthetic featuring the collection's emblematic blue dial and with titanium as the common denominator. The Herons’ starting XI featured Dos Santos in goal; Capitan Nykolas Sessock, Giovanni Ferraina, Franco Negri, and Ryan Sailor made up the back four; Pep Casas, Lawson Sunderland, and David Ruiz in midfield; and forwards Ryan Carmichael, Dairon Reyes, and Leo Afonso led the team’s attack. The Herons played a physical first half in midfield, taking charge in the press resulting in opening chances. Dos Santos was then called into action in the 33rd minute, making an amazing diving save on a dangerous shot. The score line remained 0-0 until the end of the first half. The second 45 minutes presented a plethora of attacking opportunities for both sides, but right when it seemed as if the hosts would close the half scoreless, Miami didn’t take long to capitalize on its momentum with a goal of its own, with Afonso making the score line 1-0 with a PK in the 76th minute. The hosts then struck again, closing out the second half with a PK from Carmichael to secure the second goal in the 83rd minute, putting Inter Miami up 2-0 on the scoreboard. The goal marked his sixth of the 2024 MLS NEXT Pro season, making him the top goal scorer so far this campaign. The 2-0 score line held in favor of the hosts through the final whistle. Up next, Inter Miami II will be back with more MLS NEXT Pro action as the team gears up to host Crown Legacy FC on Sunday, July 28 at Chase Stadium at 6 p.m. ET. By ML Staff. - Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami Announces Fall 2024 Public Programming
The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) has announced its Fall 2024 programming: Andrea Chung: Between Too Late and Too Early; Smita Sen: Embodied; and Nicole Salcedo: Earth Gate. The three presentations will open throughout the fall and will also be celebrated during Miami Art Week 2024 with a public reception on December 3rd. “We are thrilled to present these solo presentations, each of which reflects the diversity and creativity of contemporary art in South Florida and beyond, while also highlighting three women artists local to our community,” said Chana Sheldon, MOCA Executive Director . “Each presentation brings a unique perspective and innovative approach, offering our visitors a chance to engage deeply with themes of resilience, transformation, and the interconnectedness of our shared histories.” Opening November 6, Andrea Chung: Between Too Late and Too Early will be a solo exhibition highlighting Chung’s unique multidisciplinary oeuvre with more than 80 mixed media works, including collages, a new installation, sculptures, and works on paper. The show marks the largest institutional presentation of Chung’s work to date. Chung’s practice mobilizes a diverse range of materials, from sugar to cyanotypes, all serving to explore the complex legacies of colonialism and its impact on island nations. Her use of materials is rooted in both creativity and necessity. She particularly employs sugar, a central symbol of the transatlantic slave trade, to tell stories of resilience and resistance “A significant aspect of my practice involves embracing the materials for what they are, acknowledging that I cannot control their changes,” said Andrea Chung . “By allowing these pieces to evolve independently over time, I hope that, in witnessing their transformations, viewers come to reflect on the transient nature of history and materials.” A highlight of Between Too Late and Too Early , Chung will present a new commission featuring sugar bottles, which recalls the desperation of mothers who committed infanticide to prevent their children from becoming enslaved. In their perilous acts, they either threw their children or themselves off slave ships into the ocean. Each bottle contains a note of apology to a lost child and dissolves over time, the smell permeating the gallery’s atmosphere and tainting the bottles, inviting viewers to return to the gallery again to witness the transformation and ephemeral nature of the materials and histories represented. Alongside Chung’s works, Smita Sen will debut her first major solo exhibition, Embodied , featuring a diverse array of mediums such as body prints, 3D printed sculptures, and films. This exhibition provides a comprehensive look at the evolution of Sen’s practice over the last five years, examining the complexities of the human condition and the role of art in grief and understanding. Sen, an artist and interaction designer, works across multiple mediums including performance, sculpture, and drawing. Her upcoming show at MOCA will delve into the early origins of her dance-based practice, exploring themes of the body, both internal and external wounds, grief, and healing. “Over the past decade, my work has shifted from questioning how to physicalize my experiences to understanding and visualizing them,” said Smita Sen . “Prompted by physical and emotional transitions in the last five years, what began as an investigation of my limitations transformed into an extension of my capabilities and a process of healing. Embodied represents that transformation and reflects the ongoing discoveries in my practice.” In Embodied , Sen incorporates advanced technology such as 3D renders in her sculptural work, as both a natural extension of her physical practice and a way to navigate her changing physical limitations. This will be highlighted in her show, offering a multisensory experience for viewers to consider grief, loss, resilience, and the human experience of living with pain and longing. Sen's artistic practice is an extension of her former career as a dancer. After an injury that prevented large-scale performances, she turned to using advanced technology and 3D modeling to explore the resilience and malleability of the body, reflecting her continuous search for healing mechanisms, which evolved into her series Feelings, Fossilized, which will be on view at MOCA as part of the exhibition. A highlight of the exhibition, Sen will perform alongside artist Trina Basu in a reimagining of their piece, Rituals of Sacred Surrender, which was first presented in 2021 at Recess as part of Sen’s Session Residency. These exhibitions highlight MOCA's commitment to showcasing significant works by artists at pivotal points in their careers while continuing its tradition of supporting South Florida talent. As the museum approaches its 30th anniversary, these shows invite reflection and meditation, exploring themes of resilience, transformation, and the influence of historical and personal legacies. Through diverse mediums, the exhibitions emphasize the interplay between materiality and storytelling to address complex social issues. Both exhibitions will be on view through April 6, 2025. Ahead of the two exhibition openings, on September 18, Nicole Salcedo’s Earth Gate will culminate as the final installation of the 2024 Art on the Plaza series. The public art work will offer a transformational threshold for visitors to pass through and honor the spirit of the Earth and our inherent interconnectedness with all beings. Drawing from the legacies of Cuban women artists, such as Ana Mendieta and Belkis Ayón, Salcedo’s multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, fibers, performance, film, drawing, and mark-making while integrating botany, fractals, electromagnetic physics, and animistic spirituality in an exploration of land-consciousness and the interplay between the body and its environment. Inspired by Caribbean-style gates, her installation at MOCA features intricate plant motifs and a large face representing the spirit of nature. The installation’s freestanding design signifies a transition from the mundane to the sacred, inviting reflection before crossing. Supported by pools of water, the work will enhance the museum's landscape, offering visitors a meaningful opportunity to contemplate and connect. In conjunction with Salcedo’s installation, MOCA will host a public program on September 27, inviting visitors to engage with the work by building a mandala alongside artists Alex Zastera and Agua Dulce. On October 12, MOCA will also host a public conversation about the 2024 iteration of Art on the Plaza, discussing the artists’ works and practices. More information on these events can be fou nd here . “Each of these artists uses their multidisciplinary practices to tell powerful stories—Chung through her exploration of colonialism and its effects on island nations, Sen through her examination of the human condition and healing, and Salcedo’s drawing from the legacies of Cuban women artists,” said MOCA Curator Adeze Wilford . “Bringing these works to Miami is particularly significant as they offer a unique opportunity for viewers to engage with contemporary issues, providing a platform for meaningful dialogue and reflection on the ongoing impact of many shared histories across our community.” For more information about the fall programming and upcoming events, please visit mocanomi.org . - Interior Designer Bea Pernia of Bea Pernia Interiors Design Debuts Pine Tree Villa Miami Beach Project
Bea Interiors Design by Bea Pernia debuts a new Miami Beach Project this summer 20204. The interior design of this Mediterranean-style home is inspired by a modern minimalist aesthetic with elements of organic and contemporary style. Bea Interiors Design creates a space that predominantly uses white and light tones with a clean and airy feel that enhances natural light and makes the house appear larger and more open. Simple, clean lines are evident in the furniture and architectural elements, such as the arches and off-white linen curtains, typical of minimalist design, creating a comfortable atmosphere . Natural materials like marble, micro-cement, and light wood flooring add warmth and texture, aligning with organic influences. The plush furniture and ergonomic shapes prioritize comfort without sacrificing style, reflecting a blend of form and function. Decorative elements like the vase, small sculptures, and black accents on the furniture and lighting fixtures provide contrast and interest without overwhelming the space. Large windows with sheer curtains allow ample natural light to flood the room, highlighting the bright interior. Artful accessories, such as an abstract rug and sculptural objects, add a touch of personality and artistic flair. The view of the garden through the windows and the use of indoor plants blur the lines between the interior and exterior, enhancing the sense of tranquility and connection with nature. Overall, the design aims to create a serene, stylish, and inviting atmosphere that combines minimalism with comfort and elegance. The homeowner, Chanda Carroll, is a mother of 2, entrepreneur, and tastemaker with a passion for philanthropy, travel, and fashion. - Luxury Home of The Week: This Stunning Estate is Redesigning Modern Living
Known for its sun-soaked days, pristine beaches, and electrifying nightlife, Miami is a vibrant metropolis that tempts both residents and investors alike. While Miami remains a magnet for buyers from major cities like New York, Washington, D.C., and Boston, in a city where the allure transcends borders, the decision to secure a second home beyond our beaches becomes an exciting venture. With an increase in listings and a notable influx of affluent individuals, most would argue that the market is becoming more balanced, and luxury second homes are increasingly common. Beyond Miami lies a sprawling real estate landscape, teeming with diverse neighborhoods and hidden gems. So it comes as no surprise that the majority of these Miami buyers are only living here part time and escape the summer heat for places like New England where the real estate market is booming, and gorgeous properties can be found on every corner. With this in mind, we spoke to top broker Antonio Khoury of Khoury group who works in Miami, Boston, New York, Europe, the Caribbean (and beyond) who was tapped by the prestigious ARCO Design and Build firm to represent their entire portfolio. “These homes were architecturally and thoughtfully designed with all the modern amenities and high end finishes in mind by ARCO, an ultra luxury renowned developer. With modern floor plans, enviable locations, and a naturalistic color scheme, these luxury homes create a seamless transition between indoors and out.” said Khoury Our pick of the week is 20 Old Farm Road in Newton which boasts over 6,700 square feet inside and has a floorplan that seamlessly flows between the designer kitchen with gorgeous paneling, a formal dining space, and a living area. A contemporary, dual-sided fireplace separates the latter two for a striking focal point and the ideal space for entertaining family and friends. Upstairs, a laid-back lounge area leads to the primary suite and its attendant spa-like bath that feels more like staying at a 5 star hotel than a primary residence. The team at ARCO is known for executing architecturally driven projects while maintaining an unshakable focus on high quality craftsmanship which is apparent in every detail of this home. Often, the firm implements green practices by using sustainable materials and best build practices in an effort to provide a healthier living environment for years to come, a signature touch from ARCO. The cherry on top? The 2 blue stone patios that offer a luxurious and spacious retreat perfect for relaxing or entertaining to your heart's content. Re ady to move in? Us too. All you need is a cool $4,299,000 and it's all yours. Contact Antonio Khoury of Khoury Group at 781-385-1695 for this home or the many others he represents in Miami, Boston, a nd beyond. By ML staff.
