  • Miami Dolphins Announce Tim Bowens as Next Member of Team's Ring of Honor

The Miami Dolphins announced today that former defensive tackle Tim Bowens has been selected as the 28th member of the team's Ring of Honor. Bowens, the first addition to the prestigious group in 10 years, will be formally inducted into the Ring of Honor the final weekend of October, when the Dolphins host the Arizona Cardinals, with a special halftime ceremony. "Tim Bowens was the epitome of a team player who performed at an elite level for a long period of time, allowing both his teammates and the Miami Dolphins to be successful," said Tom Garfinkel, Vice Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Miami Dolphins. "From the day he was drafted until the day he retired, Tim was a warrior in the trenches. His selfless, dependable and physical style of play is a big reason why his teammates also found success, most notably Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas, who are now enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. We are excited to recognize Tim later this season and cement him where he belongs, among the all-time greats in Miami Dolphins history." Bowens played his entire 11-year NFL career with Miami from 1994-2004. His toughness and durability were remarkable at one of the game's most physical positions. Bowens' 157 games played are 14th-most in Dolphins history. His 155 career starts rank sixth in team history and are the most by an interior defensive lineman. Bowens played 104 straight games between the 1994 and 2000 seasons, which is tied for the 10th-longest streak by a Dolphin. His 92 consecutive games started between 1994 and 1999 is the fifth-longest streak in team history. Drafted 20th overall by Miami in the 1994 NFL Draft, Bowens made an immediate impact. He started as a rookie in Week 1 and won the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year award at the end of the season. Bowens totaled 407 career tackles (296 solo) and 22.0 sacks as an interior defensive lineman. He had nine forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, one interception and 21 passes defensed. He was selected to two Pro Bowls following the 1998 and 2002 seasons. Bowens was added to the franchise's Walk of Fame in 2012 and named to the Miami Dolphins 50th Season All-Time Team in 2015. The Miami Dolphins Ring of Honor, formerly known as the Honor Roll, was introduced in 1990 to honor the franchise's greatest players and contributors who had a meaningful impact on team success for a sustained period of time. • Fighting Fascism in the Factory: The Revolutionary Lives of Women Cigar Workers at The Wolfsonian–FIU

At the turn of the 20th century, a wave of leftist, radical, working-class women and men traveled from prerevolutionary Cuba to Florida, turning Ybor City into the global capital of the Cuban cigar industry. In this talk, historian Sarah McNamara tells the story of immigrant and American-born Latinas from this "Cigar City" who organized strikes, marched against fascism, and criticized U.S. foreign policy. To these women, cigar work provided more than a wage—it created a pathway to a more just world. After the talk, stay for a book signing of the author's latest release, Ybor City: Crucible of the Latina South (2023), and visit our installation Smoke Signals: Cigar Cutters and Masculine Values . • Enhancing Your Boating Experience with Leaning Posts

When it comes to boating, comfort and functionality are paramount. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a weekend enthusiast, the right equipment can make all the difference. One essential piece of equipment is the leaning post. Designed to provide support and stability for individuals on a boat, leaning posts enhance the overall boating experience , making long hours on the water more enjoyable and less strenuous. Image by Wimbledon / Adobestock Benefits of Leaning Posts Enhanced Comfort and Support Leaning posts  are designed to offer superior comfort and support, especially during extended periods on the water. Unlike traditional seating, leaning posts allow you to stand or lean comfortably, reducing fatigue and strain on your back and legs. This is particularly beneficial during rough seas or long fishing trips, where constant movement and balance are required. Improved Maneuverability and Stability For the captain, a center console leaning post provides a stable and secure position from which to steer the boat. It enhances maneuverability by allowing quick and easy shifts in position, which is crucial during docking, navigating through tight spaces, or responding to sudden changes in sea conditions. The added stability also contributes to safer boating , as it helps maintain balance and control. Image by Wimbledon / Adobestock Types of Leaning Posts Fixed vs. Adjustable Leaning Posts Leaning posts for boats come in various designs, with fixed and adjustable options being the most common. Fixed leaning posts are sturdy and provide a permanent solution, ideal for boats where space and layout are fixed. Adjustable leaning posts, on the other hand, offer flexibility. They can be adjusted to different heights and angles, catering to the preferences of different users and accommodating various activities, from fishing to cruising. Built-in Storage Options Many leaning posts come with built-in storage features, adding to their functionality. These can include leaning post rod holder, tackle storage, and even cooler compartments. Such features are particularly useful for anglers, as they keep essential gear within easy reach, reducing clutter and maximizing deck space. Materials and Durability Common Materials Leaning posts are typically made from durable materials like aluminum, stainless steel, and fiberglass. Each material has its own set of advantages. Aluminum is lightweight and resistant to corrosion, making it ideal for saltwater environments. Stainless steel offers superior strength and durability, while fiberglass provides a sleek, modern look and is highly resistant to the elements. Maintenance and Durability Maintaining leaning posts is relatively straightforward. Regular cleaning with fresh water and mild soap helps prevent salt and grime buildup. For stainless steel and aluminum, occasional polishing can maintain their shine and prevent corrosion. Fiberglass leaning posts may require waxing to keep their finish looking new. Proper maintenance ensures that your leaning post remains functional and aesthetically pleasing for years to come. Image by Tomasz Zajda / Adobestock Installation and Customization Installation Processes Installing a leaning post can vary depending on the type of boat and the specific model of the leaning post. Generally, it involves securing the post to the deck using bolts and brackets. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to ensure a secure and stable installation. For those not comfortable with DIY installation, professional installation services are available. Customization Options Leaning posts can be customized to suit individual preferences and boating needs. Options include adding extra rod holders, upgrading to leaning seats, or incorporating additional storage compartments such as a leaning post holder. Customization allows boat owners to tailor their leaning posts to enhance their specific boating activities , whether it’s fishing, cruising, or watersports. End note Leaning posts are a valuable addition to any boat, enhancing both comfort and functionality. By providing support, improving maneuverability, and offering customizable features, they significantly enhance the boating experience. When selecting a leaning post, consider your specific needs and preferences to choose the right one for you. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Adobestock
