For 80 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade has been a place where childhood memories are made, dreams take flight and generations of young people discover just how bright their futures can be. On Saturday, Oct. 10, the South Florida community is invited to celebrate The Wild About Kids Gala: Celebrating 80 Years, held at the Loews Coral Gables Hotel. The signature event will honor the people, programs and milestone moments that have shaped the organization’s remarkable legacy of empowering youth, strengthening families and building great futures. For eight decades, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade has been part of growing up in Miami-Dade, helping children and teens explore and develop new interests while building lasting friendships. The Wild About Kids Gala will celebrate that legacy and the generations of young people whose lives have been shaped by the Club, while helping ensure even more children have the opportunities and support they need to build great futures. Proceeds from the evening will directly support programs across the nonprofit organization’s six Clubs, including after-school care, tutoring and homework assistance, STEM, educational enrichment, college and career readiness, financial literacy, character and leadership development, health and wellness, arts, sports and recreation and summer and winter camps. Together, these opportunities give children and teens a welcoming place to learn, explore their interests, develop new skills and prepare for the future. The black-tie celebration will begin with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by a three-course dinner in the Alhambra Ballroom. Guests will enjoy an exciting silent auction, captivating live entertainment by acclaimed Latin soul artist Lucy Grau, dancing and meaningful moments featuring the remarkable youth of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. The evening wouldn’t be possible without the support of our Gala Chair Michelle Zubizarreta, gala committee members, our board members and donors who are committed to creating great futures for our area youth. Their support does more than fund programs; it shapes futures, strengthens communities and builds a lasting legacy.” “It has been my honor and privilege to serve as Chair of the Wild About Kids Gala for the past three years and I am especially grateful to conclude this journey as we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade,” said Michelle Zubizarreta. “For eight decades, the Club has opened doors, inspired dreams, and changed lives. Within 48 hours, a PURRR team member will schedule a meet and greet for the chance to see firsthand the personalities and quirks of feline residents. PURRR prioritizes the new feline family member's well-being and conducts a comprehensive final medical examination and bloodwork before taking the lifelong feline companion home. The PURRR team will check in after a week to ensure a smooth transition and address any questions. - Simple Design Choices That Give a Home More Character
You don't need to gut a house to make it feel like something. The rooms that stay in your memory usually come down to three or four decisions, not a checklist of whatever's trending this year. What gives a space character is the accumulation of small, deliberate choices. An unexpected material. One piece of furniture that doesn't match anything else. Lighting that actually flatters the room. An architectural detail somebody chose to leave alone. The good news is that none of this has to happen at once. Very few people want to empty a room and start over, and honestly, you rarely need to. A few well-chosen additions will shift the whole mood of a space. Image by Curtis Adams / Pexels Start With What's Already There Before you buy anything, spend some time looking at what the room hands you for free. Exposed beams, tall ceilings, an arched doorway, old hardwood, a fireplace — these are your starting point. Working with them keeps you from over-decorating and burying the very things that make the room worth being in. The subtler stuff counts too. The proportions of a window, the tone of the floorboards, the way afternoon light moves across one wall. All of it should influence your colors and materials. Building on what a room already gives you produces something far more convincing than forcing a Pinterest board onto a space that was never going to accommodate it. Let One Thing Dominate Every room needs somewhere for your eye to land. That might be an oversized painting, a strange and wonderful light fixture, a piece of furniture in an unreasonable color, or an architectural feature you've decided to emphasize. The important part is choosing one. If everything competes, nothing wins, and the room ends up feeling busy without feeling interesting. Fireplaces are a good example, because most people treat them as purely functional and leave it there. The surround, the mantel, and the screen are all opportunities. Custom fireplace screens in particular can carry a lot of visual weight for their size — a distinctive shape or finish changes the whole hearth without touching anything structural. Apply the same logic anywhere in the house. One memorable thing usually beats five forgettable ones. Skip the Obvious Decorative Pieces Character tends to come from the slightly unexpected. Before you reach for another framed print or a vase from the same shop everyone else uses, look for pieces with odd proportions, handmade finishes, or visible evidence that a person made them. A sculptural object on a console, a chair with an unusual profile — these do more for a room than a dozen safe choices. Not everything needs to be a statement, though. Distinctive pieces work best when the things around them are quiet. The contrast is what makes them read. Build Depth With Texture Personality doesn't have to arrive through color. Layering textures is the easiest way to add depth to a neutral palette. Put something smooth next to something woven. Set ceramics or stone against natural wood. Add upholstery that invites you to sit down. A rug warms up hard floors immediately. Linen curtains and a wool throw will soften furniture with sharp modern lines. Consider how materials feel under your hand and not only how they photograph, because you're going to live with them. Rethink the Lighting Lighting changes a room more than almost anything else you can do to it. Stop relying on the single fixture in the middle of the ceiling. Add floor lamps for the dark corners, table lamps to draw seating areas closer together, and something directional to pick out artwork or a textured wall. Warmth and intensity matter as much as placement. You want softer, lower light in the evening and something brighter to work by during the day, which means you need more than one switch. For the effort involved, it's probably the highest-return change on this list. Image by Salman Saqib Mix Periods A house where every object is clearly from the same five-year window feels strangely flat. Put contemporary furniture next to vintage finds, inherited pieces, or older materials. A worn wooden table holds its own against modern seating. A bold contemporary painting wakes up a traditional room. You don't have to get the history right. Nobody's grading you on period accuracy, and the friction between eras is usually the interesting part. What you're after is a room that looks like it accumulated rather than one that arrived in a single delivery. Don't Forget That People Live Here Design still has to survive daily life. The coffee table needs to hold things. The chair needs to be comfortable after twenty minutes. Storage needs to be reachable, and decorative objects shouldn't force you to walk around them. The rooms you use most — kitchen, living room, the space just inside the front door — reward practical thinking the most. A few baskets, some open shelving, and a decent console by the entry solve real problems while looking better than the pile of shoes and mail they replace. Put Something of Yourself In It Personal objects are usually what separate a home from a showroom. Photographs, books, art you actually chose, things you carried back from a trip, a bowl your grandmother used. These say something about the people who live there, and they're the fastest cure for a room that feels anonymous. You don't need to put it all out at once. Rotating objects between rooms or shelving some of them for a season keeps the space feeling alive. Give It Time Good rooms almost never come together in one go. Live in the space before you finish it. Notice what's working and what keeps bothering you — a wall that stays blank too long, a corner that's always dim, a seating area that feels a little cold. This approach also saves you money and regret. You buy fewer things, and the things you buy tend to be right, because you're solving an actual problem instead of filling a gap you noticed on move-in day. The result, after a year or two, is a house that fits together without looking like it came from a catalog. Final Thoughts Adding character to a home isn't about dramatic gestures. Pay attention to the architecture you inherited. Add a handful of things worth looking at. Think carefully about materials, light, scale, and comfort, and let the objects that mean something to you stay visible. A good house isn't a showroom. It's collected, a little imperfect, and unmistakably attached to the people inside it. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Pexels

Art Basel Miami Beach returns to the Miami Beach Convention Center for its public days from December 4 through 6, with invitation-only access beginning December 2, 2026. What Is Art Basel Miami Beach All About? Art Basel was founded in Basel, Switzerland, in 1970. More than three decades later, the organization expanded internationally with the launch of Art Basel Miami Beach in 2002, its second fair. The inaugural Miami Beach edition featured 160 leading galleries and attracted more than 30,000 visitors, showcasing works by both established and emerging artists. Art Basel later expanded to Hong Kong (2013), Paris (2022), and Doha, Qatar (2026), creating a global network of premier art fairs. Today, Art Basel Miami Beach remains one of the world's most influential contemporary art events. The Art Basel Miami welcomed 283 galleries representing 43 countries and territories, reinforcing its position as the leading international art fair in the Americas. The event also attracted more than 85,000 visitors, including collectors, curators, artists, museum directors, celebrities, and art enthusiasts, while transforming Miami into the center of the global art world during Miami Art Week. Photo credit: Art Basel To make it clear, Art Basel Miami Beach is one event within the broader Miami Art Week calendar. Satellite fairs, museum exhibitions, public art projects, brand activations, talks, and private events take place across Miami Beach and the wider Miami area, but they are not all organized by Art Basel. The venue currently lists a $20 flat fee and operating hours of 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., seven days a week. Entrances are at 1901 Convention Center Drive on the west side and 2000 Washington Avenue on the east side. Accessible spaces and electric-vehicle charging stations are available in the rooftop garage. The venue also lists several nearby municipal garages, including facilities on 17th Street, Meridian Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue, and Collins Avenue. Current City of Miami Beach garage rates vary by location and may include event flat rates. Photo credit: Art Basel Parking demand is typically heavy during Miami Art Week. Rates and traffic controls can change for major events, so drivers should check the convention center and city parking pages shortly before arrival. What Is the Best Way to Get Around Miami Beach During Art Week? The Miami Beach citywide trolley is free and currently operates from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, with an average frequency of about 20 minutes on each route. Freebee also provides free on-demand service in designated Miami Beach service areas. Its current published hours are 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Photo Credit: Shawn Ghassemitari/HypeArt The City of Miami Beach has offered additional Art Week shuttles and water-taxi connections in previous years, but the 2026 special-event routes and hours have not yet been published. Rideshare service is available, but pickup and drop-off locations may be adjusted during the fair. Walking can be the simplest option for visitors staying near the convention center. What Should I Wear to Art Basel Miami Beach? Comfortable shoes matter more than a formal dress code because a visit can involve several hours of walking and standing. Light layers are useful for moving between Miami's warm outdoor weather and air-conditioned exhibition halls. Some invitation-only events may set their own dress expectations. Check the specific invitation rather than assuming the main fair has a formal requirement. Photo Credit: Casey Kelbaugh What Can I Bring to Art Basel Miami Beach? Visitors may carry a small handbag, purse, or briefcase that does not exceed 16 by 8 by 16 inches, or 40 by 20 by 40 centimeters. Backpacks, suitcases, and trolleys are prohibited in any size. Other bags and similar items above the size limit must be left at the Coat & Bag Check, and visitors’ belongings may be inspected by security. Outside food and drinks may not be brought onto the show premises. The published rules do not list an exception for bottled water or filled reusable bottles, so visitors should plan to purchase water and other beverages inside the fair and consume them only in designated areas. The 2026 dining and beverage lineup has not yet been announced. Packing light is the simplest approach. Art Basel states that it is not responsible for lost, stolen, or checked belongings. Visitors should review the official rules again shortly before attending in case the fair publishes additional guidance about refillable bottles, medical necessities, or other exceptions. Can I Bring a Pet to Art Basel Miami Beach? Do not plan to bring a pet. The Miami Beach Convention Center's published accessibility policy specifically welcomes ADA-recognized service animals when they are leashed or otherwise under control, with the handler responsible for the animal. Visitors with service animals should also review Art Basel's 2026 visitor rules before attending in case the fair publishes additional entry instructions. Is Art Basel Miami Beach Accessible to Older Visitors and People with Disabilities? The Miami Beach Convention Center is ADA compliant and provides accessible parking, ramps, elevators, restrooms, automatic entrance doors, and Braille signage. The venue also offers the Aira visual-interpreting service, subject to the app's usage limits. Art Basel's current visitor information says manual wheelchairs and scooters are complimentary on a first-come, first-served basis and can be picked up at Coat and Bag Check locations. The convention center separately states that wheelchairs are available at no charge in exchange for valid identification until the chair is returned. Photo credit: Art Basel Visitors who need a mobility device should arrive early and contact the venue in advance if availability is essential. Is Smoking or Vaping Allowed Inside the Venue? No. The Miami Beach Convention Center's FAQ states that smoking and vaping are not permitted inside the building. How Does Art Basel Address Lost or Stolen Art? The Art Loss Register currently lists Art Basel Miami Beach among the fairs where it conducts due-diligence searches. Art Basel's current Miami Beach dining page states that it works with Sodexo Live!, the convention center's official catering provider, on five practices at the show: increasing plant-based meals, sourcing responsibly and locally, reducing waste, supporting communities through food donations and volunteering, and transitioning to biodegradable and compostable products.
