  • Pumpkin Bread: a Nutritious and Delicious Appetizer

Kids love it, grown-ups love it…this pumpkin bread is hard to beat! My grandmother clipped this pumpkin bread recipe from a magazine over 50 years ago, and it is my most-cherished family recipe. One of my clearest childhood memories is baking the loaves with my mom and then carting them off to every neighborhood potluck and holiday party. Now I bake this pumpkin bread with my own kids and it’s just as wonderful today as it was back then. It’s easy to make — just a bit of mixing and stirring, pop it in the oven, and, in about an hour, you’ll have a house smelling of sweet autumn spices and two scrumptious, pumpkiny loaves. This is the original recipe from my grandmother’s recipe box; as you can see, it has seen its share of spills! What you’ll need to make pumpkin bread How to make pumpkin bread Begin by combining the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and spices. I like to add everything in neat little piles in case I lose track of what I’ve added. Whisk well and set aside. Combine the butter and sugar in a large bowl or in the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat until just combined. It will look a little crumbly. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Continue beating for a few minutes until light and fluffy. Add the pumpkin. Beat until combined. It will look a little grainy — that’s okay. Add the dry ingredients to the pumpkin mixture. And beat on low speed until just combined. Transfer the batter to loaf pans. Bake for 65-75 minutes, or until a cake tester comes out clean. Let the loaves cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack to cool completely. That’s all there is to it. Enjoy! Pumpkin Bread By Jennifer Segal Kids love it, grown-ups love it…this pumpkin bread is hard to beat! Servings: Makes 2 loaves Prep Time: 20 Minutes Cook Time: 65 Minutes Total Time: 1 Hour 30 Minutes Ingredients 2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup and leveled-off 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1-1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened 2 cups sugar 2 large eggs 1 15-oz can 100% pure pumpkin (I use Libby's Instructions Preheat the oven to 325°F and set an oven rack in the middle position. Generously grease two 8 x 4-inch loaf pans with butter and dust with flour (alternatively, use a baking spray with flour in it, such as Pam with Flour or Baker's Joy). In a medium bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Whisk until well combined; set aside. In a large bowl of an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar on medium speed until just blended. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Continue beating until very light and fluffy, a few minutes. Beat in the pumpkin. The mixture might look grainy and curdled at this point -- that's okay. Add the flour mixture and mix on low speed until combined. Turn the batter into the prepared pans, dividing evenly, and bake for 65 – 75 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the loaves cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Fresh out of the oven, the loaves have a deliciously crisp crust. If they last beyond a day, you can toast individual slices to get the same fresh-baked effect. Freezer-Friendly Instructions: The bread can be frozen for up to 3 months. After it is completely cooled, wrap it securely in aluminum foil, freezer wrap or place in a freezer bag. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving. • Locust Projects Presents Three New Exhibitions in September

Locust Projects presents Remnants, a new site-specific project by Miami-based multidisciplinary artist Loni Johnson. The exhibition opens to the public with a reception on Thursday, September 9 from 6-8 pm, and is on view through November 6, 2021 Wednesdays-Saturdays from 11 am-5 pm. Admission is free. “This installation is based on creating a safe space for Black women. To serve as a platform for Black women to be seen and to reflect on who we are. How we navigate through the world and beyond. This installation will propose and engage in thoughts of how ancestral and historical memory informs our existence in a society that continuously tries to silence and erase us.”– Loni Johnson. During her residency at Locust Projects, Johnson will transform the Mobile Studio into a physical space to inform, heal, and offer counter-narratives that commemorate Black women and girls and celebrates their role in the community; a place where they can feel seen, apart from the world that continues to silence them and deem them invisible. In the words of poet Nayyirah Waheed, “All the women in me are tired”. An offering to Black women, Remnants responds to this collective experience by providing a place for all of these women in us to rest, normalize vulnerability, and dismantle the myth of the Black Superwoman while also reconnecting with and honoring our mothers, our mothers’ mothers, and their mamas too. The installation pays its respects to Black women through altars that include photos from the artist’s matriarchy alongside traditional elements from the West African Yoruba cosmology that can be found and gathered in neighborhood botanicas and Dollar Stores. Everyday objects and decorations such as sequin, lace, and cowrie shells are offered as tributes together with hair beads, gold bamboo earrings, and mirrors–objects found in local beauty supply stores and used in women's daily life to adorn and enshrine. Remnants invites visitors to pause, breathe, and reflect within the space, offering welcoming, comfortable, and cozy seating and cushions. Painted the very same pink color Johnson lovingly remembers from her maternal grandmother's home, the space fosters a feeling of nostalgia and belonging. Johnson encourages visitors to engage with the work, presenting offerings within the space from which viewers can collect a piece of the installation to bring home with them, such as cowrie shells, hair beads, and candies, leading guests to ponder the question of what remains of them within the spaces they exit from. The project will be accompanied by a series of public activations intended to engage and provide access to contemporary visual and performance art throughout Miami’s varied communities. These programs within the public sphere will provoke intimate, inclusive dialogue between Miami’s BIPOC communities, artists, and creatives of all ages, encouraging an exploration of creative expression and self-discovery. About the artist Loni Johnson is a multidisciplinary visual artist born and raised in Miami, FL. As an artist, educator, mother, and activist, Ms. Johnson understands that as artists, there is a cyclical obligation to give backhand nurture our communities with her creative gift, and it must be utilized to better our world. Through movement and ritual, the artist creates healing spaces for Black women and explores how ancestral and historical memory informs how, when, and where we enter and claim spaces. Ms. Johnson graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of FineArts from SUNY at Purchase College School of Art and Design. • Unveiling the Gucci Xbox Bundle

Year after year, Gucci’s curious nature reflected the eternal vitality of times, marking the new while intercepting and traversing aesthetics. In the year of its centenary, the House manifests a deeper than ever connection between its language and the codes that shaped popular culture, embodying self-expression, and collective memories. For the occasion, Gucci joined forces with another brand at the forefront of its industry and blowing out on its candles: Xbox, now reaching its 20th birthday. The two companies come together to celebrate their respective anniversaries with a first-ever, limited-edition collaboration. Under Creative Director Alessandro Michele’s imaginative and inclusive vision, Gucci saw a ready relationship with Xbox – a company on a mission to bring the joy and connection of gaming to the more than 3 billion players on the planet. The meeting of tech and tradition, of the tactile, poetic depth of Gucci’s design language and Xbox’s sleek, polished functionality is precisely the type of pairing that symbolizes the House’s quest to combine times and lexicons. The result of this global collaboration is the unveiling of 100 numbered sets, each comprising a custom Xbox Series X console with a GG-pattern laser-engraved, two Xbox Wireless Controllers in Carbon Black featuring Gucci’s Web stripe in red and blue, complemented by a hard case inspired by Gucci’s archival luggage. The case is covered in the famous beige Gucci Supreme canvas, with gold catches and yellow leather trim. A red and blue Web stripe runs around it, while “XBOX” is written on the lid in the brand’s signature green, a familiar hue to Xbox players. The same colour covers the efficiently compartmentalised interior, which houses the console and controllers. On the bottom of the case sit the words “GOOD GAME” in yellow. The motto recalls the happy coincidence that GG stands not only as a famous motif in Gucci’s decorative vocabulary – deriving from the name of Guccio Gucci, who founded the House in 1921 in Florence – but also as the acronym of this formula, used sportingly during gaming. Attached to the handle is a yellow leather key holder and luggage tag, portraying both the companies’ logos. The set will be available on November 17th on gucci.com, as well as in select Gucci stores: New York’s Wooster, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, Moliere Palacio de Hierro in Mexico City, Beijing SKP, Shibuya Parco in Tokyo, as well as in ephemeral Gucci Circolo locations in London, Berlin and Milan. The project speaks of Gucci’s quest in seeking out new cultural areas to explore, always with a view to encourage the promotion of character and self-expression. For gaming fans, enthusiasts and aficionados, this exclusive console and its carrying case are a collectible, eclectic set, with nods to the past, present and future. The new Gucci and Xbox collaboration comes after the House’s previous exploration of the world of games and video-games, both through those it has designed for its own app, as well as through its collaborations with Mattel Creations, 100 Thieves Roblox, Zepeto, Animal Crossing, content creators from The Sims 4’s community, and FNATIC among others. #GucciXbox About Gucci Founded in Florence in 1921, Gucci is one of the world’s leading luxury fashion brands. As the House marks its 100th Anniversary under the Creative Direction of Alessandro Michele, with Marco Bizzarri as President and Chief Executive, Gucci moves forward into the coming decades with an ongoing commitment to redefining luxury, while celebrating the creativity, innovation and Italian craftsmanship at the core of its values. Gucci is part of the global luxury group Kering, which manages the development of a series of renowned Maisons in fashion, leather goods, jewelry and watches.
