- Chef Raymond Li becomes new executive at KAORI Miami
KAORI has named Miami-based chef Raymond Li as its new executive chef. The popular Mediterranean-Asian-inspired restaurant in Brickell is taking an entirely new, fresh approach to modern Asian cuisine with the reinvention of KAORI's signature menu, which debuted in January of this year. "We are beyond excited to finally be able to share this truly exceptional experience we’ve created at KAORI Miami, with all our guests,” says Diego Pagola, Creative Director of Umai Group & KAORI Miami. “Intention has been a very important factor in our conception of the brand, in creating an environment where our guests can feel welcome and at home. Every pillar put into this project lends to KAORI’s harmonic journey through the senses, led through gastronomy, music, and design.” Upon arrival, guests will find the entrance to the 4,500 sq. ft. restaurant at the ground level of SLS LUX Brickell, where they will be greeted by KAORI’s signature bar and lounge area. Appealing to those looking for an inviting neighborhood spot with an authentic evening-time vibe, the bar and lounge area also brings an inspired mixture of entertainment, live music, and exotic instrumentals from a wide range of cultures. The music component of the space plays a fundamental role in establishing the identity of KAORI as a whole, lending to the curation of the venue’s full-sensory guest experience. A signature KAORI playlist is also available for anyone to follow, offering guests a unique KAORI takeaway experience that alternates bi-weekly. Gastronomy Beyond the bar and lounge space, guests will come across a dimly lit staircase, which elegantly links to KAORI’s spacious upstairs dining area. Here, Chef Raymond Li serves as the heartbeat of the restaurant, creating a beautiful balance between modern and time-honored techniques while combining the two worlds of Mediterranean and Asian cuisine. Chef Li unleashes his culinary artistry with a menu that exudes a diverse and sophisticated fusion of flavors, colorful and texturally rich ingredients. Highlighting farm-to-table practices, and the sourcing of local ingredients and quality fresh fish, KAORI’s menu offers an eclectic culinary journey through land and sea. Beverage Programming Aside from an incredible culinary focus, guests can also expect a sublime cocktail, wine, and sake programming. Prominent local bartender, James Mcleenes, serves as KAORI’s lead Bar Manager, where he incorporates a variety of innovative ingredients from different cuisines into the signature cocktail menu. Pulling influence from his residencies in Sydney, New York City, and Miami’s bar scene, James’ approach is minimalist, flavor-focused, with a notable emphasis on execution and elegant presentation. KAORI’s wine and sake offerings are spearheaded by two powerhouse women, Macarena Carrillo and Mariel Dalmau, who double as the founders of the natural wine social club, Grape Crush Miami. Their method creates a sustainable and innovative program, blending classics while simultaneously pushing boundaries. Design Esteban Bressan’s vision was brought to life as a collaborative initiative between critically-acclaimed Miami-based design firm Spazio/Bressan and Interior Image Group (IIG), every space within the two-story concept was designed to offer an authentic, harmonic ambiance to enhance the guest’s overall experience, that is: the KAORI experience. The bright, open, airy space exudes a balance between sophistication and casual comfort that celebrates simplicity through a modest palette of organic materials. Light-toned wall finishes and flooring contrasts with darker design elements, giving the venue a sense of inviting warmth. Lush greenery enlivens the space and adds another layer to the natural look and feel, building onto the connection between the location’s urban setting and nature. - Feeding South Florida® Announces its Third Annual “Feed Your Creativity” Art Competition
Feeding South Florida, the leading domestic hunger-relief organization in South Florida, is excited to announce its Third Annual “Feed Your Creativity” Art Competition. Elementary, middle, and high school students throughout Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties are invited to participate for the opportunity to have their artwork converted to one of Feeding South Florida's truck wraps – a 36-foot moving billboard that travels throughout South Florida. The art competition is the first of Feeding South Florida’s several “Summer Hunger Ends Here” initiatives, a campaign designed to raise the awareness and funds necessary to end summer hunger in South Florida. It’s aimed to engage students, their parents, teachers, and schools in a critical issue, while also recognizing and highlighting the talent in our community. Summer months are some of the most difficult times for South Florida families because when school is not in session, some kids don’t have access to free or reduced-price school meals. In South Florida alone, there are nearly 200,000 children who don’t know from where they will get their next meal, and over 500,000 who rely on free or reduced meals during the school year. Seeking to fill the void of school meals, Feeding South Florida is a proud sponsor of the USDA Summer Food Service Program, providing meals to kids at Summer BreakSpots, pop-up mobile pantries in low-income communities. Feeding South Florida also assists families in its Community Caring Centers at both warehouse locations. “We are excited to announce our third annual ‘Feed Your Creativity’ Art Competition that kicks-off our ‘Summer Hunger Ends Here’ campaign,” said Sari Vatske, executive president of Feeding South Florida. “Participating in the art competition allows students to give a voice to nearly 200,000 children who go to bed hungry in South Florida.” The first-place winner will be awarded: Artwork is displayed as a truck wrap on a 36-foot tractor/trailer that travels throughout Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe Counties. Artwork prominently displayed at Feeding South Florida’s Pembroke Park warehouse until Aug. 31, 2022. Artwork inclusion in Feeding South Florida's “Million Meal Summer” Food Frenzy promotion, including digital toolkit and/or social media assets. Announcement on social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Other accolades include: Youth People’s Choice Award: the piece with the most “likes” on Facebook and Instagram wins. Youth Ambassador Award: Feeding South Florida’s kids council chooses this award. Orange Ribbon Award: The judges choose the piece that speaks most to the mission of ending hunger. School Spirit Award: Given to the school that has the highest number of pieces submitted. In keeping with Feeding South Florida’s belief that food is a bridge to understanding others, the 2022 theme is “Food is Community.” The deadline to submit artwork is Feb. 28. All artwork will be displayed during a Gallery Night in May, where winners will also be announced. The winning truck will be revealed in Summer 2022. Additional instructions regarding preferred colors, size, and accepted mediums are available at www.tinyurl.com/ARTtoFSF. Students may also register to learn more. Sponsorships and in-kind donations are available. For more information, contact Michele Fernandez at 954.518.1818 x1863 or mfernandez@feedingsouthflorida.org. - The Doral Contemporary Art Museum (DORCAM) to Host Pop-Up Exhibition“Botero at Full Volume”
The Doral Contemporary Art Museum (DORCAM), in coordination with Adriana Meneses Art and David Restrepo Art, is pleased to host the pop-up exhibition, “Botero at Full Volume,” at CityPlace Doral. The exhibition, which showcases the graphic art of the celebrated Colombian artist Fernando Botero, opens to the public on Jan. 26 and will remain on view until June 30, 2022. Botero is known for paintings and sculptures that, with their gargantuan dimensions, appear to overflow galleries and cities around the world. However, the thick figuration of the Colombian has also flooded a field of plastic for a long time that is sometimes considered, unfairly, a minor art. “Botero at Full Volume” introduces 45 posters from collector Enrique Michelsen’s poster collection, “Fernando Botero, The Evolution of a Master,” which chronicles Botero's career since the beginning. In 1977, Michelsen acquired his first Botero poster dedicated to the World Theater Festival held that year in Nancy, France. Michelsen’s collection, which began as a hobby, became a document of the artist's life, because his posters reveal the magnitude of Botero's career. “Only by visually going through his posters is it possible to measure his extraordinary presence in the art world,” said Michelsen. The main themes of Botero’s thick and colorful graphics – either in small, medium or large format – depict bullfighting, religion, the nude or nature. Like artists Toulouse-Lautrec, Daumier and Manet, Botero showcased his art to the general public, many who did not visit galleries and museums. Born in Medellin, Columbia in 1932, Botero was struck by the creative impetus during his adolescence. He abandoned the apprenticeship of bullfighting to devote himself fully to painting, although bullfighting remained a theme in his artwork. He once confessed that he has done it all not by academy, but by intuition and work: “for pure passion.” Although the influence of Diego Rivera, Rousseau, Velázquez or Goya can be appreciated in his work, Botero’s histrionic passion for painting volume suddenly appeared while he was painting the mandolin in a still life in 1956. His goal is not to paint fatness and gigantism, he believed the feast of volume was its own visual rite to celebrate sensuality and beauty and described it as "an exaltation of life." “Through our partnership with Doral Contemporary Art Museum, we are excited to offer CityPlace Doral guests and the local community art and cultural initiatives for the whole family to enjoy,” said Mauro Olivieri, General Manager at CityPlace Doral. “‘Botero at Full Volume’ highlights the importance for the viewer in observing the master’s work in parallel to the evolution of the art of communication and graphic design in the last five decades,” said Marcelo Llobell, director of the Doral Contemporary Art Museum and co-curator of the exhibition. “Botero at Full Volume” is produced by DORCAM in collaboration with Enrique Michelsen Collection, Adriana Meneses Art Consultant and David Restrepo(Dr. Art). When: On view from Jan. 26 through June 30, 2022.
