Wynwood Walls to Unveil Reclaimed Subway Car Ahead of Miami Art Week 2023

With the theme, Power of Purpose, this year’s Miami Art Week at Wynwood Walls is sure to be one to remember. New to the Walls this year, a reclaimed subway car as part of its permanent installation works will be showcased. To commemorate the historic acquisition, this 48-foot immersive “art piece” will be unveiled in a festive ceremony on Saturday, November 25. It has now found its permanent home at the Walls after completing a 1,000-mile journey from West Virginia as a fascinating installation for Miami locals and visitors to enjoy.

Originally built between the years of 1976-1978, this Boeing-Vertol 2400 is one of only 200 built in its series. While most cars were scrapped after being in service for around 10 years, this one was used in anti-terrorism training exercises for the Center for National Response.

An original 48-foot subway car will serve as an interactive graffiti art exhibit for visitors to enjoy

When Jessica Goldman Srebnick, Curator of Wynwood Walls, discovered that many of these cars had been purchased and stored in the mountains of West Virginia, she set out on a mission to acquire one of these historic transport cars. With the aim to create interactive artwork for visitors, the subway car is set to feature one-of-a-kind murals on the exterior and curated artworks on the interior, where advertorial posters were once housed. This work is meant to delight, inspire, and spark curiosity for its future “passengers” in its new home at Wynwood Walls.

A number of Wynwood Walls’ artists will be in attendance for an exciting activation, and guests can expect to see archived photography by renowned street art photographer Martha Cooper, artist tags on the interior of the subway car, breakdancers, a live band, a hot dog stand, and statements from Goldman Srebnick and Cooper, alongside more exciting programming.
