World Literacy Foundation Expands Christmas Book Pack Drive to Confront Florida’s Illiteracy Crisis

The World Literacy Foundation is preparing to distribute its annual Christmas book packs to children in low-income and highly disadvantaged communities across Florida, where an estimated 61% of young people do not own a single book. The initiative, created in partnership with USA Reads, aims to strengthen early literacy by giving children access to age-appropriate books during the holiday season.

During a visit to Florida, World Literacy Foundation CEO Andrew Kay underscored the severity of the state’s literacy challenges. According to Kay, 40–60% of 10-year-olds from low socioeconomic backgrounds are unable to read a full sentence, a gap that significantly limits future opportunities in education and employment. The holiday period, he noted, provides a meaningful moment to reach children with resources that can inspire curiosity and build foundational reading skills.

The program follows the distribution of 2,600 literacy packs in 2024, with hopes of doubling that number this year. Volunteers and book supporters across the state play a central role, donating time and resources to help deliver the curated book packs and encourage a love of reading within their communities.

Now in its 12th year, USA Reads continues to work with schools, small businesses, and community groups to collect books, raise funds, and organize local volunteer efforts. Each Christmas pack includes books and basic educational tools designed to engage children in both reading and writing.

The Foundation is inviting Floridians to participate by volunteering, donating books, or contributing financially. More information is available on the World Literacy Foundation website.
