Why Your Body Might Be Holding Onto Stress, And What You Can Do About It

We often think of stress as something that exists only in our minds. We tell ourselves we’ll feel better after a vacation, a good night’s sleep, or once life finally slows down.

But what if your body is still carrying stress long after the stressful event has passed?

Over more than three decades working with patients and practitioners around the world, I have come to believe that the body is remarkably intelligent. It is constantly communicating with us through sensations, symptoms, and signals. Pain, tension, fatigue, digestive issues, headaches, anxiety, and disrupted sleep are not always isolated problems to fix. They can be messages that your nervous system is asking for support.

The Nervous System Is Your Body’s Control Center

Your nervous system regulates virtually every function in your body, from breathing and digestion to movement, immunity, and emotional wellbeing. When we experience physical injury, emotional trauma, or prolonged stress, the nervous system can shift into a protective state.

While this response is designed to keep us safe, many people never fully return to a state of balance. Instead, they continue operating in survival mode, even when the original stressor has passed.

This can leave people feeling exhausted despite getting enough sleep, tense for no apparent reason, or living with persistent discomfort that seems to have no clear explanation.

Your Body Is Not Broken

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that symptoms automatically mean something is wrong with us.

In many cases, symptoms are actually the body’s way of communicating.

Just as hunger tells us we need nourishment or thirst reminds us to drink water, physical discomfort can be the nervous system’s way of asking us to pay attention.

When we begin listening instead of fighting against these signals, we create opportunities for healing rather than simply masking symptoms.

A Different Perspective on Healing

After years of practicing chiropractic care, studying the nervous system, and learning from healing traditions around the world, I developed the Spinal Flow Technique. It is a gentle, hands-on approach that focuses on supporting the body’s natural healing intelligence through the spine and nervous system.

The philosophy behind the technique is simple. Every person has an innate ability to heal. Sometimes that healing potential simply needs the right environment to emerge.

Rather than forcing change, we focus on helping the nervous system release stored stress so the body can return to a more regulated state.

Simple Ways to Support Your Nervous System

Supporting your nervous system does not always require dramatic lifestyle changes. Small, intentional habits practiced consistently can make a meaningful difference.

Some simple ways to begin include:

  • Prioritizing quality sleep and consistent rest

  • Spending time in nature without digital distractions

  • Practicing slow, mindful breathing throughout the day

  • Moving your body gently through walking, stretching, or yoga

  • Creating moments of stillness to reconnect with yourself

  • Paying attention to physical sensations instead of immediately dismissing them

These practices can help create space for your body to move away from constant stress and toward greater resilience.

Healing Begins with Listening

One of the most powerful lessons I have learned throughout my career is that healing is not about fighting your body. It is about understanding it.

Our bodies are designed to grow, repair, and adapt. Just as our hearts beat without conscious effort and our skin heals after a cut, our nervous systems have an incredible capacity for restoration when given the opportunity.

When we begin to see symptoms not as enemies but as messages, we often develop a healthier relationship with our wellbeing. That relationship is built on curiosity, compassion, and trust rather than fear.

Healing does not always happen overnight, but it often begins with a simple shift in perspective. Your body is not working against you. It is doing its best to communicate with you.

When we learn to listen, we give ourselves the opportunity to heal.
