Underline Plinth Project: Four Artists Shortlisted for ‘Sculpting the American Story’

Friends of The Underline is pleased to announce the shortlisted artists for the first Underline Plinth project: Sculpting the American Story. The inaugural installation of a new biennial public art initiative will commission rotating sculptures and foster community dialogue through contemporary public art. The project was made possible through the support of the National Endowment for the Arts.
Located in The Underline’s Inter Grove Gallery at 2771 SW 27th Ave, Miami Fl 33133, the Underline Plinth project will feature a newly commissioned sculpture by an American artist whose work reinterprets history and heritage in honor of America250, the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The project invites artists to explore one of the defining questions of our nation: What does it mean to be an American today? Artists were encouraged to create a proposal for a sculptural work that celebrates the nation’s spirit, resilience, diversity, and impact while reflecting on the evolving American experience.
Following a competitive selection process, four proposals are shortlisted:
Carlos Betancourt and Alberto Latorre — A Forest for Many
Robert Chambers — Growth Rings
Morel Doucet — A Seat at The Table
Kennedy Yanko — Still Becoming
“This inaugural Underline Plinth project provides an opportunity to bring together art, history, and civic reflection in a public space that welcomes all,” said Debi Wechsler, UAAC Chair. “The shortlisted proposals offer compelling perspectives on identity, belonging, and the American story.”
As part of The Underline’s commitment to artistic expression, civic engagement and public participation, final proposals will be shared later this year to invite community input as part of the selection process.
The final artist selection will be made by The Underline Art Advisory Council (UAAC), which will consider artistic excellence, public input, and the project’s alignment with the goals of the America250 commemoration and The Underline’s public art program.
The selected artist will create a signature public artwork that will serve as a focal point for community engagement and cultural dialogue, and is expected to be completed and installed by Spring 2027.
