A mounted Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton known as “Gus” will be the centerpiece of the upcoming Natural History auction at Sotheby’s New York on July 14, where it is expected to fetch between $20 million and $30 million.

Dating back more than 60 million years, Gus is described by specialists as one of the most important T. rex specimens ever brought to market. The skeleton is regarded as the third most complete Tyrannosaurus rex known, following Sue, which Sotheby’s sold in 1997, and Stan, which sold in 2020.

Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s vice chairman and worldwide head of science and natural history, notes that the significance of the fossil lies not only in its completeness but also in its rarity, preservation and the scientific information preserved in the bones. She emphasizes the importance of maintaining excavation records, documentation and research associated with the specimen to support future study.

The Natural History sale will place Gus alongside other scientific and paleontological material, extending Sotheby’s recent track record in handling high-profile dinosaur fossils and underscoring continued market demand for well-documented specimens.
