No matter how old we get, some foods from our childhood never lose their charm. If you’re into nostalgic dishes, I’ve found a few South Florida spots that put a fresh spin on those classic favorites. Think grilled cheese and peanut butter & jelly with elevated twists on comforting flavors. Here are some of my favorite restaurants.

Chef Anthony Vitolo, of NYC’s iconic Emilio’s Ballato, brings his old-school Italian roots to South Florida with Vitolo, located inside the Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach. The menu is a heartfelt collection of family recipes passed down through generations, designed to be shared and savored. One standout: the Mozzarella en Carrozza - crisp, golden, and perfectly melty - is Anthony’s elevated tribute to the grilled cheese his father used to make. When his family first arrived in America with little to their name, bread and cheese became a comforting staple. His father made it for Anthony growing up, and now, it lives on the Vitolo menu as a nostalgic nod to those humble beginnings. Other classics include Linguine alla Vongole and Vitello Antonio, crafted with ingredients from the family farm in Sarno, Italy: simple, soulful, and deeply authentic.

Located in the vibrant heart of Miami Worldcenter, just a short stroll from the Kaseya Center, this two-story luxury spot from Maple Hospitality Group, the visionary team behind acclaimed restaurants Maple & Ash, Eight Bar, Monarch, and Kessaku, knows how to end things on a high, and nostalgic note. Their signature Sundae Tower is a next-level take on your childhood favorite, complete with chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry scoops topped with everything from peanut butter sauce and chocolate covered pretzels to gummy bears and Luxardo cherries. A towering tribute to dessert joy, done with unapologetic flair.

At this beloved South Beach bar, James Beard Award-winning chef Michelle Bernstein is serving up throwback indulgence with a grown-up twist. Guests dig into a Maine Lobster Hot Pocket and ultra-creamy Lobster Mac & Cheese, both rich with childhood whimsy, reimagined with fine-dining flair. At the bar, the PB&J Old Fashioned takes you straight back to lunchbox days, just with a little more bourbon.

At Takato, inside the Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach, Executive Chef Taek Lee draws from a lifetime of culinary tradition rooted in his Japanese and Korean heritage. But it’s the Sushi Ice Cream, layered with Rice Krispies, vanilla ice cream, and warm chocolate sauce, that quietly steals the show. It’s a playful nod to childhood, where crunchy cereal and melting ice cream marked the sweetest moments of summer. Elevated with intention and finesse, it’s both a comfort and a surprise: familiar, joyful, and just the right amount of nostalgic.

Tucked away on Española Way, The Joyce is a cozy 45-seat speakeasy reimagining classic American comfort food with refined technique. Chef James calls his style “American Nostalgia.” Think: Two-Way Chicken that nods to Sunday dinner, Caviar & Latkes blending luxury with tradition, and ice cream sundaes served with fries in them, a playful spin on childhood favorites. Already a celeb magnet (Alix Earle, DJ Khaled, Bethenny Frankel, Larsa Pippen), the vibe is heartfelt, precise, and rooted in memory.
