Tuscany is best known for its rolling hills, vineyards, and historic towns, but its coastline offers an equally appealing side of Italy. Along the Gulf of Follonica, The Sense Experience Resort invites travelers to discover the region at a slower pace, surrounded by pine forests, sandy beaches, and views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Located in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, this five-star resort combines contemporary Italian design with the natural beauty of its surroundings. With 112 accommodations, including 18 suites spread across five buildings, the property offers a peaceful setting for travelers looking to unwind without sacrificing comfort.

The rooms and suites are bright and thoughtfully designed, with Italian-made furnishings, modern amenities, and sea views in select accommodations. For those seeking additional privacy, certain suites feature private Jacuzzis, while the VIP Suite Program includes special touches such as fresh flowers, welcome amenities, daily treats from the chef, and sunset aperitifs overlooking the dunes.

Discovering the Gulf of Follonica

The Gulf of Follonica is one of Tuscany's most appealing coastal destinations, known for its sandy beaches, clear Mediterranean waters, and relaxed atmosphere. Stretching along the Tyrrhenian coast between Piombino and Punta Ala, the gulf offers beautiful views of Elba Island and access to the Tuscan Archipelago.

Unlike Tuscany's busier inland destinations, this part of the Maremma feels more connected to nature, with pine forests, seaside villages, and opportunities for swimming, sailing, and exploring the region's celebrated food and wine traditions.

Beach Days and Outdoor Adventures

One of the resort's greatest attractions is its private beach, just steps from the accommodations. Golden sand, comfortable cabanas, and attentive beach service make it easy to spend an entire day by the water. The shallow seabed is particularly inviting for swimming, while complimentary kayaks and stand-up paddleboards allow guests to explore the coastline, with Elba Island visible in the distance.

Beyond the beach, guests can enjoy an outdoor swimming pool heated to 82°F (28°C), sunset yoga sessions, outdoor fitness activities, tennis, and massages overlooking the sea. Complimentary bicycles are also available for those who prefer to explore the surroundings at their own pace.

A Taste of Tuscany

Dining is another highlight, with several restaurants offering different perspectives on Tuscan and Mediterranean cuisine. Dimorà celebrates regional Italian flavors with seasonal ingredients, fresh seafood, and local specialties. Its breakfast service includes homemade pastries, regional cheeses, fresh juices, and made-to-order dishes, which guests can enjoy on panoramic verandas overlooking the sea.

For a more refined culinary experience, Eaté Restaurant, led by Executive Chef Andrea Cimino, combines Tuscan ingredients with contemporary techniques and international influences. Guests can choose three-, five-, or seven-course tasting menus, including vegetarian options, with optional wine or cocktail pairings. Seafood takes center stage, with ingredients such as lobster, scampi, oysters, and bottarga, alongside regional specialties featuring lamb and wild boar.

New for 2026, Riviera offers a romantic beachfront dining experience centered on seafood, Champagne, and signature cocktails. Guests can also visit Red Rabbit, the resort's mixology bar, for classic cocktails, creative signature drinks, and local spirits. For a particularly memorable evening, the resort arranges private dinners overlooking its restored dunes, with personalized menus, candlelight, and optional live musical accompaniment.

Nature, Sustainability, and Italian Design

Another feature worth mentioning is the resort's commitment to preserving its natural surroundings. Set within a 12.4-acre (5-hectare) private park, the property is surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation and a pine forest, creating a peaceful environment just steps from the beach.

Sustainability is integrated into its operations through locally sourced ingredients, recycling initiatives, water- and energy-saving systems, and compostable materials. According to the resort, it also holds GSTC certification, reflecting its commitment to recognized sustainable tourism standards.

Inside, the emphasis on Italian design continues with natural wood finishes, colorful fabrics, and furnishings inspired by the coastal landscape. The result is a contemporary atmosphere that complements the surrounding environment rather than competing with it.

Exploring the Tuscan Maremma

The surrounding region is equally worth exploring. Through its dedicated Experience Manager and concierge, the resort offers a collection of more than 250 experiences, including cycling excursions through the vineyards of Bolgheri, boat trips around the Tuscan Archipelago, horseback riding, and visits to historic villages.

Travelers interested in local culture can explore destinations such as Castiglione della Pescaia, Capalbio, and Massa Marittima, each offering a different perspective on Tuscany's history, architecture, and culinary traditions. Wine lovers can also visit nearby estates for tastings and learn more about the region's celebrated wines.

What makes The Sense Experience Resort especially appealing is its location. Travelers can enjoy the Mediterranean coastline while remaining within reach of Tuscany's celebrated wine country and historic destinations. It is an attractive alternative for those who have already explored Florence, Siena, and the region's better-known countryside retreats.

Getting There from Rome

Reaching The Sense Experience Resort from Rome is relatively straightforward, making it an excellent addition to an Italian itinerary. By car, the journey covers approximately 130–145 miles (210–233 km) and typically takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes to 3 hours, following the A12 toward Civitavecchia and continuing along the SS1 Aurelia toward Follonica.

Travelers who prefer the train can depart from Roma Termini and reach Follonica in approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on the service. The resort is about 3 miles (5 km) from central Follonica, with local taxis available for the final transfer. Visitors arriving at Rome's Fiumicino Airport can also drive directly to the property in approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on traffic.
