The Bass Museum of Art Selected Johnston Marklee for Miami Beach Expansion

The Bass Museum of Art announced that the award-winning, Los Angeles-based architecture firm Johnston Marklee was selected to lead the museum’s planned campus expansion in Miami Beach. Supported by a $20.1 million allocation from the city's General Obligation Bond awarded in November 2022, the project marked a significant milestone for the institution as it continued to grow its footprint and public-facing programming in the heart of the city.

Building upon Pritzker Prize-winning architect Arata Isozaki’s original 1995 campus concept, the transformative design introduced a new 22,000-square-foot pavilion at the southwest corner of Collins Park. The expansion featured an elevated gallery space specifically tailored to display the museum's growing permanent collection, alongside advanced technological systems designed to support experimental media and contemporary installations.
Beyond the interior gallery enhancements, the project seamlessly connected the historic Art Deco architecture with the surrounding natural landscape. The addition included a multipurpose outdoor patio equipped with integrated screening zones, significantly increasing public access to the museum's cultural programs and creating a dynamic new community gathering space.
