South Florida Vets Warn of Feline Panleukopenia Surge Among Adult Cats

Veterinarians across South Florida are reporting a rise in feline panleukopenia virus cases among adult cats, raising concern for pet owners, animal shelters, rescue organizations, and community cat caregivers.
Feline panleukopenia is a highly contagious illness typically associated with kittens, but recent cases identified throughout the region suggest that adult cats are now experiencing severe disease and possible fatalities. The largely unmanaged and growing cat population in South Florida is contributing to the risk of outbreaks, especially among free roaming and community cats.
Veterinary experts emphasize that spay and neuter programs are a primary tool to curb overpopulation and reduce the spread of disease. One unspayed cat and her offspring can produce as many as 4,950 kittens over seven years, adding strain to local shelters and rescue groups during peak kitten season, which typically occurs year round with surges in spring and late summer.
