South Florida Symphony Orchestra continues its 28th Masterworks season of “Juxtapositions” with performances on January 21 at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale and January 22 at New World Center in Miami Beach. Led by music director Sebrina María Alfonso, the program pairs rhythmic vitality with lyrical expression, featuring Sibelius’ expansive Symphony No. 2 as its central work. Pianist Svetlana Smolina returns as guest soloist for Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, while the evening opens with Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. A pre-concert talk with Dr. Alan Mason precedes the January 22 performance.

Smolina, a frequent collaborator of the Symphony, brings global experience shaped by performances with major orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Mariinsky Orchestra, and Orchestre National de France. Her international career spans venues including the Hollywood Bowl, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and Accademia Santa Cecilia. Her discography includes Romantic Journey and a 2025 recording of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.

Her chamber music work includes collaborations with Ida Haendel, Vadim Repin, and Kian Soltani, with festival appearances across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Her performances have been broadcast on NPR, WQXR, BBC, PBS, and other international networks.
The concerts are part of a season built around contrasting musical perspectives. Throughout 2025–26, the Symphony highlights classical masterworks alongside contemporary pieces by GRAMMY-nominated composers Nathalie Joachim and Carlos Simon. The broader season also incorporates film-with-orchestra presentations and collaborations with guest artists across genres.
