Sebastian Baez Makes History as First Two-Time Singles Champion at Rio Open

The 2025 Rio Open, known for its sun-drenched courts and high stakes, saw Argentine Sebastian Baez make history on Sunday. In a thrilling final at the Jockey Club Brasileiro, Baez defeated France’s Alexandre Muller in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to become the first player in the tournament's history to win the title twice in singles. The victory, which took just 1 hour and 26 minutes, earned Baez his sixth career ATP title and solidified his status as a rising star in the world of tennis.

Baez, the fifth seed at the ATP 500 event, has now captured back-to-back titles in Rio, following his triumph last year. In front of a packed Guga Kuerten court, Baez’s flawless performance against Muller gave him the perfect sendoff, receiving his trophy from none other than Argentina’s tennis legend Juan Martin Del Potro. The win also marks an impressive comeback for the 24-year-old, who had doubts about participating in this year’s tournament due to his recent form.

“Coming here wasn’t easy after some tough results, but my coach, Guti, convinced me to keep going, to push through,” Baez explained in his post-match interview. “It feels amazing to win again, and I’m proud of how I played all week, especially today.”

Baez’s coach, Sebastian Gutierrez, who promised to tattoo the Christ the Redeemer statue after Baez’s second Rio Open win, couldn’t contain his excitement. “Seba is a giant in spirit,” Guti said. “He may not be tall, but his fighting spirit and tennis level are extraordinary. We’re so happy for him.”

After the match, Baez reflected on the significance of his win, especially with Del Potro handing him the trophy. “It was a very special moment, especially considering the relationship Guti has with Juan Martin,” Baez said. “It felt incredible to have him there, and it’s a great way to cap off the week.”

Muller, the runner-up, also had plenty to celebrate. His run to the final included impressive victories over João Fonseca, Francisco Cerundolo, and Francisco Comesaña, and with his second-place finish, the 25-year-old will break into the ATP Top 50 for the first time in his career. Despite his loss in the final, Muller praised Baez for his high level of play. “He was just too good today. Physically, I wasn’t at my best, but I gave everything I had,” Muller said. “I fought hard, but it wasn’t enough. I’m proud of my performance this week.”

The closing ceremony of the 2025 Rio Open was a true celebration of Brazil’s cultural and sporting heritage. Actress and singer Julia Mestre performed the Brazilian national anthem, while rising Brazilian tennis star Victoria Barros conducted the coin toss for the final.

With Baez now securing his second ATP 500 title in Rio, and Muller poised to make his mark in the top 50, the 2025 edition of the Rio Open will go down as one of the most memorable in the tournament’s history.
