Sam Moyer’s “Against Time” Brings Stone, Light, and Movement to YoungArts Jewel Box During Miami Art Week

Artist Sam Moyer will debut Against Time, a new exhibition at the YoungArts Jewel Box in Miami, on view from December 2, 2025, through January 18, 2026. Opening during Miami Art Week, the exhibition presents three new large-scale works that deepen Moyer’s exploration of stone, movement, and the natural world. The works are composed from broken and reassembled stone fragments, shaped by the natural fissures created when Moyer hammers each slab. These arrangements evoke layered plant life—leaves, stems, and shifting organic forms—captured in a moment of transition. Though made from dense, enduring material, the compositions suggest fleeting motion, conveying images that feel simultaneously alive and fossilized.
Installed within the stained-glass architecture of the YoungArts Jewel Box, the pieces interact with evolving natural light. As sunlight filters through the structure, it alters the tonal qualities of the stone surfaces, reinforcing Moyer’s interest in blending painting, sculpture, and photography into a unified spatial experience.
Moyer will also serve as a mentor during National YoungArts Week in January, working directly with the latest YoungArts award winners. More details on the program can be found through National YoungArts Week.
Her broader practice explores the relationship between natural and constructed environments, combining found stone with handmade elements to create works that shift between abstraction and representation. Her art has been exhibited at institutions such as the Parrish Art Museum, the Hill Art Foundation, and the Bass Museum of Art, and is held in major public collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
