South Florida's skate scene is a tapestry of history, talent, and community spirit, fostering generations of professional skateboarders who proudly call it home. From the legendary Skatepark of Tampa to Miami's Lot 11 and the DIY spots sprinkled along the coast, the area has cemented itself as a premier destination for skateboarding enthusiasts.
"Florida is a cornerstone in the world of skateboarding," says Jamie Foy of Deerfield Beach. "From pioneering tricks to hosting iconic contests, the state's impact is undeniable. Being part of this scene inspires us to carry forward its rich legacy."
Florida's contributions to skateboarding are monumental. The state is the birthplace of the Ollie, invented by Alan “Ollie” Gelfand in 1976 in Hollywood, Florida, and progressive flat ground tricks developed by Rodney Mullen between 1981 and 1990 in Gainesville. It also hosts the longest-running grassroots amateur and professional contest series—the Tampa Am and Tampa Pro—at the iconic Skatepark of Tampa.
"Back in 1993, our scene was just emerging," reflects Brian Schaefer, founder of Skatepark of Tampa. "It's been incredible to witness the evolution and see how Florida has shaped skateboarding on a global scale."
